    Give up on trying to be in the top 1% of people who "make it" but if you enjoy making music, keep making it. If you like performing comedy, do it. Giving up on the idea of being a mega star is healthy because it's not necessary for your happiness.

    The advice "Don't take advice from me." will create a paradox.

    • @TheDudewithpie
      @TheDudewithpie 7 років тому +147

      Not necessarily. If you take his advice to not take his advice, then you are left where you started, with the new prerogative to not take his advice, which was the meaning in the first place, I think. It's like event 1 causes event 2, but event 2 does not necessarily cause event 1 after event 2 has occurred, proceeding directly after event 1.

  • @Jman42576

    Success is simply being born with the right attributes, in the right place and getting lucky at the right time. Think how many people out there who are probably incredible at something and don't realise it, because they haven't been brought up in an atmosphere where they've been allowed to blossom and discover it, and even if they did, actually getting out there and being "famous" is a whole other different part. Bo has a way of being facetious and simplifying things in a comedic way, yet the underlying message ends up being so real and true. Nobody gets success JUST by luck, but it's definitely a determining factor, I think. A lot of people probably worked very hard to get to the positions they do and maybe even deserve it, but there's always somebody better than you, who isn't in that position. Just my thoughts on this, anyway.

    • @vixxcelacea2778
      @vixxcelacea2778 3 роки тому +26

      It's the largest determining factor. People are born or not born with a myriad of advantages and disadvantages from genetics, childhood, environment, diet, opportunities etc. Not one of those is in the persons control and what they have as an adult is determined by their start as much as people would like to think that you get more options as an adult, but your formative years turn you into the person you are.
      Our cultures like to keep people complacent by showing all the people who overcome the odds. What they fail to show is all the people who didn't, because it's far far far more than those who did.
      When we understand how many don't make it, we start to realize just how unfair everything is, and how little we do to try to make it more fair.
      Sure, we stand for things being fair and just, but when we push stories of people with disabilities and underdog narrative, we push this idea that with hard work one can make it. This simply isn't true. It's a problem of probability, the lottery winner is a great example of this issue we push in first world cultures. You will not win. Your odds are too low and no, that's not an encouragement to try anyway, it's to realize that the game is rigged and thinking that you can win keeps the everyone from pushing for actual change in the games rules.

  • @TransparentLabyrinth
    @TransparentLabyrinth 8 років тому +86

    Pretty much. Statistically, you don't stand a chance. The reason many of the successful ones talk about persistence is because persistence exposes you to more luck. But much like the lottery, even persistence is no guarantee. The one thing you do have that you won't get in the lottery, is finding ways to beat out the competition - to do better than them, etc. But that really only helps a tiny percentage of people because only a tiny percentage can win.
    On the whole, if you aren't willing to sacrifice a lot and never make it big, you should probably make it a hobby, rather than a career choice.

    • @eliastalks7411
      @eliastalks7411 2 роки тому +5

      To be honest, even if you sacrificed everything, the odds would still be overwhelmingly rigged against you. Going after success for its own sake isn't worth it.

    • @TransparentLabyrinth
      @TransparentLabyrinth 2 роки тому +6

      @@eliastalks7411 Agreed. My views on this have changed somewhat over the years. I'm more of the position now that most of the people who are perceived as having worked hard to get where they are had the way paved for them by, for example, having rich parents and the like. So really, even with getting lucky and being willing to game the system, if you aren't positioned well from the start in a capitalist system like this, you almost certainly aren't going much of anywhere.

    I saw this last year and he is so on point. Think about the combination of things that have to happen to even "make it". You have to have a great show and performance, someone must see you that day, you must be relevant to the times. Eddie Murphy is one hell of a comedian, but he would be undiscovered now. People would not have liked his style of comedy.

      People need to know when they're good at things. He's right for the most part. Taylor telling you to follow your dreams is very sweet and all, but thats her saying that, she basing that off what shes accomplished. But to be very good at something you have to allow yourself to be bad at it first. These guys on conan are very funny. They were chosen because they were the best at what they do. If conan didnt get this gig he would've been doing something else in entertainment. Same as Bo. Same as Ed sheeran as well for example. But it's delusional to think you can just "casually do something" and you're guaranteed success. Alot of these guys worked to the bone. Some dont have to work and get lucky like the kardashians, but you'll find most of these entertainers put their absolute all into what they love. Your dream shouldnt be to get famous, it should be to be able to support yourself doing your passion as a job, you dont have to be a millionaire

    I love how real anxious people are, compared to those people who have built nice fantastical delusions to cope with the world around them! It’s wonderful to see Conan actually bringing himself back to a *real* human level *with* Bo Burnham, in his own style, and having a realistic and raw talk about a really real problem our youth is facing. It’s very refreshing to me to hear the truth from someone who sees the world in a way that isn’t all sunshine, adorable puppies or kittens, and gravy (or whatever food dressing you prefer... w/e...) and doesn’t shy away from it, simply because it’s a little bit scary to him. Like, in all reality, anxious people who are doing the same things the avg person does, even if it’s done differently, to be *doing* something in spiteof anxiety, or especially -like Bo- *with* anxiety issues- *THOSE* people are the bravest and most courageous. In my own opinion, anyway.
    I mean, as a fellow adult with anxiety, I can kinda understand why he would discount his on monstrous hurdle that he *has* had to kinda overcome to “be here”... seeing as I, myself, would also want to minimize it while I was actually going through the struggle in that very moment, too. But at the same time, and on the same hand, appreciate the immense respect he’s giving to the “minorities” that he justifiably believes would have a more difficult time obtaining what seems like a similar level of success in the same or a similar industry. However, times have changed, and I hope that his beliefs and the way he regards himself fluctuates (not *change*, necessarily) a little to fit a bit better against today’s social injustices.

    I often dream of being famous and being better than everyone, I think it’s because I’m very unhappy and sad and alone. The whole idea lingers inside my head because I feel like I need to prove a point to someone, that I’m better and that I matter. It’s really bad inside my head and it’s been like this for so long. I’ve spent all my teenage years trying to achieve something that’s not even real and because of this turn of events, I’m so effing scared of my future. I mean what will happen to me! Will I always be dreaming like a pathetic loser?... man I’m broken. And the worst part is I can’t really tell this to anyone cause they’ll think that I’m crazy. @@jjkkssskjzzkkkjisq596 Well, you have to think 'success' is a very broad and subjective word. Society deems success as being 'rich and famous' and that we can only conflate our lives with any value if we become someone like that, but there is far more to life than just being rich and famous. I used to want all that when I was younger and I was striving for it, just like millions of other kids, but looking back on it now I couldn't be more glad that I'm not a famous figure.
      People get so blinded by the want of fame because you get lots of love and admiration, and you get lots of money and free things, that's the good, but the bad isn't worth the good in my eyes: losing your sense of anonymity, not being able to have any quiet time out in the open, people constantly coming up to you for a chat or an autograph or a selfie, all the relentless judgement the world puts on your shoulders over the smallest of things (why do you think these people are always in and out of cosmetic surgery, they're trying to find that non-existent sense of perfection, trying to please others instead of themselves), you become a global punching bag for anyone and everyone to take their problems out on. The older me looks at the younger me and thinks 'oh, how naïve and ignorant you were to think that that life is what you wanted, more than anything.'
      The best advice I can give is the advice I give myself everyday: just do what you love and what you enjoy, and don't do it because one day you hope it can buy you a big house and fancy car and get you on talk shows, just do it because it makes you happy, whether you end up being known for it or not, because at the end of the day life is too short, so just enjoy the little things and don't worry about thinking you have to be this 'famous figure' that people love and adore, because in retrospect, it's not what life is about. Life is a ride, it's a journey, it has its up and downs, its twists and turns, but ultimately, it's just a ride. So live a life that *you* deem a success, don't live it trying to impress people you don't know or care for, live it for yourself and those close to you that you do love and care for, live it trying to be the best version of yourself you can possibly be. Of all the sayings out there, the one that rings truest in my eyes is 'It's the little things that matter most.'
      Oh, and on a side note, get off social media if you haven't already, it's one of the biggest causes of anxiety and depression in today's generation. Sorry for the rant, but hopefully you'll be able to take something away from it.

  • @mikedome9475

    He is right in saying to give up. Give up trying to be successful. But don't give up what you actually do. Keep doing what you want to do for the sake of what it is your doing. If you are stopping whatever you are doing because you aren't successful, then you don't deserve to be successful.

  • @Kroko84

    The advice is played for laughs here, but he's spot on. I mean, if you feel happier telling yourself that you at least tried if and when you do fail, then by all means go ahead and pursue your dreams. Show business, however, is among career paths where you're extremely unlikely to ever "make it". Just as with the lottery example, people tend to believe in their own chances over the overwhelming majority. It's one of the many cognitive biases that the human mind is prone to. More likely than not you will end up happier if you go for something realistic in the first place.

    The point is....luck plays a huge factor. In everything. You need to know It. You can do everything right and It might still not matter. Also many people might do less than you except for being in the right place at the right time and make It big, bigger than you. Too many people won't tell you that. They will tell you "Dreams come true!" And forget to add "just not for everyone". If you bet everything on the idea that hard work and dreaming and visualize it and wishing It into existence will 100% work, you will be distraught if you don't make it anyway, despite doing everything right. You'll blame yourself, you think you lack something, you'll question yourself, your beliefs and you will get depressed.. You won't get it. All because you didn't factor in sheer dumb luck. You need to know. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do the work, that doesn't mean you shouldn't hope for it, dream it, wish for It but you need to know....It might still not be enough. Because luck plays a factor. Because we're just one person among billions and not everything is under our control. And you need to be objective and aware of where the line that divides your fault and flaws and just the rest of the world and how It works is. You owe It to yourself and to your sanity to be aware and be ready for both success and failure.

Even the ones who do make it are lucky to make a living out of it for more than 5 years before being replaced by newer, younger, fresher acts. Decade long stars are a rarity in comparison to those that came and went and desperately try to cling to their 15 minutes of fame, rehashing what made them a name forever.
    The lesson is - do it to enjoy it. Live a full and rounded life. Half of the people who do make it made it because they sacrificed something and dedicated all their energy on one thing while neglecting others. Loads of them are unhappy or damaged people who have found money and fame didn't actually fix any core problems.
    Bo Burnham has repeatedly been honest that performing for approval takes its toll on a person.

    I have never been more appreciative of this genuine viewpoint from a successful person in my life. Thank you for acknowledging that it's not just all about hard work....it's about luck and being around the right people, at the right time in the right place.

    If you want to make art, don't make it in hopes to be successful. Make art for the sake of it and share it with people.

    Honest stance right here. He even mentioned Taylor Swift whereas the average person in his position would have thought to keep names to themselves. But he is right. Lily Collins ring any bells...?

    Basically he's saying that it's good to have a goal and a dream in your life but you should also be a little bit more realistic and not give up everything in your life for this goal/dream that is super unlikely to happen.
    Work for your dream, but don't sacrifice your entire existence for it.

    I think you guys are misinterpreting this. Bo is talking in a grander sense. If you have dreams, don’t give up. Follow them. Hes saying that if your goal is just to become a famous megastar THAT is unhealthy because it’s unlikely.

    I understand when he says he got lucky buy i believe he is truly talented and has ability that not a lot of people have. I hope one day he can conquer his demons and perform again. Probably one of my favorite comedians.
