  • All ten of the world’s most populated countries including China, India, Russia and the U.S. have leaders, or a leader-elect, over the age of 70. When they face off in the 2024 election, President Joe Biden and Donald Trump will be the oldest candidates in U.S. history, again. So why are world politicians older than ever?
WSJ breaks down why politicians are increasingly older than their constituents-and what it means for policies and political engagement.

    2:18 Why this is happening

Younger politicians face big barriers like lack of funding and political networks. They often can't match the resources and connections that older politicians have built over decades. Plus, with an aging population, older voters prefer candidates who share their experiences and values. This is why we see leaders like Biden and Pelosi, who have the backing of older demographics and established networks, staying in power.

They will have to live with it, because they leave behind children in the world who will live with it. That is if they become deceased before such laws take effect. And what is elderly is subjective. Humans didnt live as long as they did today and what was elderly in past ages was 40s, 50s. The 'elderly' should be the ones making laws because they have the most life experience. The fact you do not know any of this is proof enough that youth is equal to inexperience. Come back in a decade or so and give your opinion after you've had many more life experiences to flavor your view.

I wish this video offered a more detailed discussion of how incumbent advantages have produced older politicians. As the video briefly mentioned, many Congress members from the last 10 years have been people who entered office when they were relatively young back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Lots of young politicians entered Congress in the 70s partly because general discontent with government/the status quo, the departure of older Dixiecrat politicians, and the ideological realignment of the parties created opportunities for young candidates. I imagine campaign finance challenges contribute to incumbent advantage and aging policymaking bodies. I also imagine that it's easier for old U.S. politicians to remain in office because they have leadership positions (committee chair, whip, majority/minority leader, etc.) that enable them to wield a lot of policymaking power and secure a lot of federal funds for their districts. I'd bet a politician would have to be pretty odious for people to give up the power that comes with having access to people in important positions of congressional power. Also when you're an incumbent, you can ask your long-time friends in government and all the people you worked with to do you favors that aid your election - much like Biden did in 2020 when his campaign remained unpopular throughout most of the primary season. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_members_of_the_United_States_Congress_by_longevity_of_service
I think it’s also worth mentioning that major party politicians in the U.S. have not supported the sort of deep organizing that produces high youth voter turnout rates. Unions and other institutions boosted voter participation rates for young people in the mid 20th century, but they have weakened in the last few decades and their voter mobilization role has not been fully replaced. So young people continue to not vote consistently at high rates, which perhaps justifies pivots to older voters in the minds of incumbent politicians.

The US is also a rare exception amongst democracies in having the age at which someone may stand for election very much higher than the voting age. I disagree. Admittedly, 35 feels arbitrary and I could, in theory, support lowering it.
But the younger you are the more it immediately makes sense why you're not qualified to be president. Experience, maturity, knowledge, etc. Eliminate minimum age and, theoretically, a 16 yr. old can be POTUS which would obviously be bad.
But older? The are risks of cognitive impairments, sure. But that's really it. A hard cap on, say, 70 doesn't speak to any obvious disqualifers that are/can be guaranteed. There are people older than Biden who can do the job better and younger who can do worse (the opposite is true too). So max / min limits are arbitrary in nature; I would prefer to issue testing instead.
