Hey Catman! i`m a chef and i want give u some tips for cooking Morels. first don`t season them with salt and pepper till after they are cooked they will get crispier! a good thing to know in cooking is when you add salt to something it will bring the moisture out. So if you crisp the shrooms first then season them, you will have a much better product. also shallots are fantastic with morels! and if you could find some Ramps/wild leeks cook them together its an awesome side dish for venison!! Hope this helps and if you need any cooking advise message me anytime!!!! love your channel and watch all of your videos keep them coming!!
Thanks for the video. In the west we usually get them after a rain if the temperature warms to the 60s in the day. Forest fire burns are the best but ground disturbed by logging can be good. Also some areas just seem to produce some every year. They look a lot like Douglas Fir cones so you must look closely. If you see one spend some time in that spot because there will usually be more. Spring bear and turkey seasons will open soon so it's a nice time to be in the woods.
About to start scouting around in Wisconsin, last couple of years I feel like I am in competition with deer and turkey. I find more under dead fall and brush where the deer and turkey can’t get to the treasure...I don’t have proof, but where I find morels I find a lot of muzzle rubs where the leaves are pushed aside down to bare ground with deer tracks and turkeys scratching in the same areas...nice video, some great specimens in that batch. Thanks for sharing!
Mr. Catman. Try looking on the river hills. We found a whole lot last year along the river. It was either the sycamore trees or the high water washing the spores everywhere.
Without a doubt.....the best morel video Iv'e seen yet. Good Job fella'. Several years ago I found hundreds of morels in early April, but not many as big as the ones you found in this video. I also had a spot that produced black morels every year for about 12 years, now they just stopped growing there- despite the fact that I always cut them about 1/3rd the way up from the ground. I always leave the mycelia (roots)intact on any edible mushroom. Hopefully I'll find some to post on my channel this year.
Thank you sir. I like the no nonsense advice. My neighbor and I were mowing lawns today and he spotted some on his property...asked if I wanted them and heck yeah's! I had some on my property 3 years ago and pinched them as recommended but have not returned. Odd fungus to say the least but very tasty.
Awesome can't believe how early you are finding must be staying warm in Tennessee I'm in Ohio just a little early here yet but love me some morels can't wait for your turkey videos stay safe.
I soak mine in salt water. I let them sit a bit, mainly to run the bugs out and wash the grit off (good ole rich black mountain dirt)- it leaves the shroom and sinks to the bottom. I dust mine lightly in flour and fry in butter or grease usually, although I love them bare as well. Thanks so much. My most favorite dish.
Morel grow best around trees that drop the most bark and leaf if you can find an area that has small limbs laying on moss or small greenery you should find morels if the ground temp is in that sweet spot
Wow I better start looking around here thanks for the heads up Also we hunt around a park and they told us to put the mushrooms in a potato bag that would help spread the spores
Man this is awesome. I tore em up around Brookville and metamora Indiana. Miss living there just for this reason. Haven’t had luck last two years where I’m at nky
When I get started getting interested in mushrooms it was late autumn. So it happens that morels were the very first mushrooms I found. It occurred to be the first one I ever found (almost smashed one when walking and that was how I found it :D). Can't wait to go hunting them this year I think morels and chanterelle are the best mushrooms existing. Greetings from Poland!
This is the best video I've seen on morels. Thanks so much for the info . I'm in north Louisiana hoping it's not too late to find some here. Happy Easter 💕
8:50 “there’s no rhyme or reason “ I disagree, science seems to as well… but still your point is right! Sometimes you find a spot that looks perfect but you get nothing other times you spot one in a spot you would NEVER look. They’re strictly attached tree roots but roots can go SOOOOO far and they don’t even need to live roots. They are mysterious little buggers
i found my first morel yesterday by accident. I was burning some brush and noticed it next to me. I usually just find oyster and chanterelles during the year. Im in south middle tn also.
We soak them in salt water and roll them in flour and fry in butter! They definitely like popular, ash,old abandoned apple orchards and I have found them under multiflore rose bushes. Also around sycamore trees! But if I had a favorite place to look it would be around ash and popular! Great video bud,I enjoy watching them all.
Man I would love to find a mess of morels to eat! I found my first one last year in Tennessee, hope to find some this year and try em out. Good luck on the turkey hunting this season ! 👍🏻🍀
I used to love hunting morels. I’ve lived in Maine for 17 years, haven’t found one morel! But, very thankful for the many, many bags of mushrooms I have found......
Well then, I lived in Illinois for 45 years, now Maine....proud to be a yankee! Proud to have lived in a state where morels grew in the groves. Never found any morels in piles of cow dung, or growing in the asphalt of any road. But, I have found enough to eat and sell to restaurants as a side business, there are none in Maine!
@@bruceayork9594 myself a longtime Vermonter, the mushrooms in cow patties was a ol' hippie joke. Proud to be a Yankee myself. I think he meant morons hate Yankees.
Thanks man videos like this are so helpful for people like me just starting out with morels. Jealous you guys farther south seem to have way more finds, up in Massachusetts I have never found a single one. Just a couple in NH once
Great content, I love to deep fry a bunch of morels with young lettuce and onions kilt with bacon grease on the side of deep fried woods turkey breast. Also you could substitute the young onions with ramps. Traditional southeastern Kentucky meal! About to start an outdoor channel myself, wish me luck!
@@timothygu3 went there yesterday and didn't find shit haha.Had had a lot of rain tonight so I'll try again tomorrow.Plus I'm leaving my dog at home this time.I can't keep an eye on the dog and the ground at the same time ,afraid the dog will disappear in all them woods.
Gorgeous. They’re in season here in Arkansas and I’ll be happy to get my chance to pick some! Note to people North of the Mason/Dixon: you’re not doing it right if you’re not using a Kroger bag, pocket knife, and a Dixie plate. Ranch optional, butter sautéed crispy is just as good as battered and fried. My first Catman video. Thumbs up!
I love me some morels deep fried! Second best thing in the Spring just behind turkey huntin! Thanks for sharing and I noticed that you pick your morels by breaking the stems. That’s awesome because it almost always assures that there will be more next Spring! You have the best videos!!!
These two comments confused me. Justice Fall said that breaking the stem was the best way. John Foley said that was correct, but then said PULLING THEM OUT promotes more growth. Which is best? To me, breaking off and pulling out are two different things. Doesn’t “pulling out” imply removing from the base? Like when pulling weeds, we pull them out from the roots. The reason I’m asking is because Morels grow in our backyard, so we want to know the best way to harvest them that will promote more growth. Sorry for commenting on a year-old video. I just saw this and learned something new, so I had to ask.
I have always enjoyed your videos and especially your DIY videos. This video was very helpful but I really enjoyed your turkey call from a turkey wing. I appeciate you buddy keep up the good work and looking forward to more videos.
I went out a few times last week to check some spots but I think it’s still a little too cool here in western pa. Hopefully in the next week or so I’ll be able to pick some at my honey hole
Once when I was a kid we came across something that is not normal when hunting. A few of us country boys all about 12 years old found a patch of morels that was at a minimum 12 foot by 18 foot. The big deal is this, you could barely see the ground at all. What is burned into my mind is how perfectly fresh they were and ranged from 6 inches down to 3 inches. I don't blame anyone for not believing
Man those were some good size ones. Those dang mushrooms are delicious, deep fried along with some fresh killed turkey. Go great with those deer steaks also.
Curtis J. Pace Jr. Don't forget about some freshly caught and cooked crappie. one of the best meals I've ever had was crappie, morels, and asparagus. everything either caught or foraged. brings us closer to nature
This year found only Black one. I have a couple video on my Channel. But I learning still how Morels grow. I next find this colors yet. I love cooking too...Morels is good Risotto😉
Sweet!! I can't wait for Morrell season out here in Oregon. It's a little early here with nighttime temps still way below freezing. What state is this footage in? Have fun!

I have found some under cedar trees as well in middle Tn as well
They are all out in Upstate SC 👍
Always in the clover looking stuff around here under tulip poplar in creek beds, that's my experience so far
Mr. Catman. Try looking on the river hills. We found a whole lot last year along the river. It was either the sycamore trees or the high water washing the spores everywhere.
That shot of that bag full next to the dead Turkey is like poster material! Follow that with that whopper morel - Fantastic stuff Catman!
I agree, That big one made his hand look small.
Jim Hossack 👍👍👍
Catman made me sign a non-disclosure agreement that morning haha
Joey Bell I’ve signed the same one while small game hunting/turkey scouting

Now that’s a score. I’m in Northwest Ga. it’s been so darn cold and raining a lot. I hope I get on em soon

Also don’t use plastics use burlap or a sack that oranges come in. I usually don’t see them in Michigan until Mother’s Day
I agree, always use a mesh sack.
Good video. Lots of great information
Wow I better start looking around here thanks for the heads up Also we hunt around a park and they told us to put the mushrooms in a potato bag that would help spread the spores
thats the best thing to do!
Deep fried with some crappie or bluegill fillets, one of my favorite meals on earth. Old fruit tree orchard and popular trees.
Can you tell me what zone you are in? We are zone 4b in Atlantic Canada. Awesome video and great looking deep fried morels!
Great video! Good description and examples. Best of luck to you this spring, and I think I will get out today to lookfor morels.

My son and I went out this morning looking for them in eastern N.C. and nothing! Glad to see someone find some.
Found about 20 yesterday after work in Va. Passed on a bunch of small ones. Hoping to get them in a few days.
You should use a mesh sack so the spores can scatter as you walk

Absolutely beautiful! Love finding patches like that.
Awesome video man! Super syked and can't wait for them to start popping up here in Canada. Awesome patch by the way!
They are not up yet in northern west Virginia as of 3-26-20
I going to dream picking morels. Thank.you for sharing
Great video Catman! My favorite way is deep fried also! You found a mother load of big ones!

Those fried morels dipped in ranch looked so good oh man
Great video!!! Love gathering up a mess of morels. Would you mind telling how you made the ranch like how much of each ingredient? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the tips! I enjoyed this video way more than I thought I would. :)
Never had any before but enjoyed the video.
Here in Wisconsin, they usually grow around dead elm trees or apple trees. Don't find them until early mid May. Good video.
Great tips very interesting
Thank you for sharing us..
Love your videos! You put out so much content and info! Enjoy what you "Do" Live Life Bro! Keep on keepin on!
I've always did mine in a flour and egg batter.

I don’t know where you get your info from but grays are not small yellows
No sir! They are not
Depends on where you are and what species are present.
Sonofammonite 1 tru
Technically they are. There are only 3 species of morels. Yellows, blacks, and the “half-free” morels, also known as snake heads.
I've watched the same patches of morels produce mushrooms for multiple seasons. The small grays always turn into big yellows if you let them grow.
They sure are beautiful,I love mushrooms,I soak mine in salt water and dip in egg and flour, great video man
Skip the egg
Wow I got 17 acres in West Virginia with all those characteristics you described.thank you.
Gary Ballard what the hell man, get out there!

Jackpot awesome find !
I have found big yellows on hill tops with low cut green vegetation as well, maybe just because it makes them so visible?

Correct, pulling them out disturbs the mycelium and promotes more growth
