- Stuttgart Germany is one of the largest cities in Southern Germany and the administrative centre of Baden-Württemberg. This city with a population of over 600,000 people is one of the industrial capitals of the country. The world famous automotive concerns, Mercedes and Porsche, have their headquarters here. Surprisingly large and industrial Stuttgart does not look like a metropolis. You feel quite at home in the city. Interestingly, the locals speak German with a Swabian accent.
The city is located in the historic region of Swabia on the banks of the river Neckar. The climate is temperate with warm summers and mild winters. It is usually warm from May to September. Although the weather is comfortable at other times as well. The average temperature is +20 degrees Celsius in summer and around 0 degrees Celsius in winter. Snow cover doesn't usually stay on for more than a couple of weeks throughout the winter!
In antiquity, there was a Roman fortress on the outskirts of Stuttgart. The city itself was founded in 950 by Duke Ludolf, son of Emperor Otto I. The Swabian duke built stables and the first fortifications here. The settlement was called Stutengarten (literally German for mare's garden) and later shortened to Stuttgart.
In the first half of the 13th century, the settlement came under the ownership of the Margrave of Baden, who gave Stuttgart city status. In 1251, the nobility of Würtenberg received the town. Stuttgart was owned by this family until 1918.
In the first half of the 14th century it became the capital of the countate of Württemberg, and from the end of the 15th century it was the capital of the duchy of the same name.
Places of interest in the city:
The abbey church is a symbol of old Stuttgart. It was laid out at the end of the 10th century and is the only building that survives from the Hohenstaufen period in the city. However, not much remains of the building that was originally intended.
The old castle was laid out in Stuttgart back in the 5th century. A few centuries later it lost its status and became a mere stable. After that, it was again transformed into a beautiful structure with perfect towers. The castle became the residence of the counts and dukes of Württemberg.
Solitud Castle, which lies to the west of Stuttgart, came into being on the orders of Duke Carl Eugene. The reason was that the duke liked to rest and hunt far away from the hectic world. It was for this purpose that he needed a castle. Solitud, built in 1745, is similar to Potsdam's Sans Souci.
In the mid-18th century, Duke Carl Eugene von Württemberg built a new country chateau, which was called the Bear Castle. It was a three-storey pavilion in the ancient Roman style. Residents and visitors to Stuttgart like to visit the castle for the weekend - it's a great place to take a walk and sit in the restaurant.
Stuttgart belongs to the most important economic centres in Germany and Europe as a whole. The city is home to the headquarters of global concerns such as Daimler (known for the production of Mercedes-Benz cars) and Porsche, as well as Bosch in its surroundings. In addition, Siemens, Kodak and Lenovo have their offices in Stuttgart. The city is also home to renowned engineering firms (SBP, Leonhardt Andrä und Partner, Knippers Helbig) and architectural firms (Behnisch & Partner, Behnisch Architekten).
Stuttgart is Germany's second most important stock exchange after Frankfurt.
The construction industry is represented in Stuttgart by major companies such as Wolff & Müller, Züblin and Gottlob Rommel.
Stuttgart is also famous for its football club Vfb Stuttgart which is a member of Bundesliga.
