When is the Sutcliffe pod??
“You know you’re gonna get ripped off if a bloke in a 512 Boxer turns up” just brilliant
The Bentley around the Millbrook bowl on cruise control with Goodwin and Sutcliffe in the back is the first thing to make me cry with laughter in such a long time 😂
Oh. My. Lord! Haven't been exposed to Colin before now. What a top character!
Please go and watch the Autocar £250 banger race, this man is an absolute nutter in a car 😂
Mental driving in that Volvo
Stumbled onto your podcasts chief. Listened to the lot driving 100s of miles over the last 2 weeks. This one is utter genius. Pissed my sides. Brilliant! Thank you. More please Guv!
That was just brilliant.
Thanks Collecting Cars.
10 mins in and laughing hard, just what i needed in these times, thank you
Out of all the podcast's on this channel this is by far the best, please get Colin back on again he is incredible, the stories are just amazing and not to mention the dry way he tell's them.
“In what category can you race a flat” 😂
Can hit like five times
As an avid CAR mag collector back in the day, this was 'effing great. Thanks CC. Days when you could hammer it and plod wasn't watching every move. More sanity Mr Harris please, this made me cry with laughter.
This must be the 3rd or 4th time I've listened to this, I honestly believe Colin is the best guest you've had!
Brilliant what a character - I could listen to Colin all day. 33:50 one of my favourite bits
Another thoroughly enjoyable podcast, thank you both for taking the time to share your stories :-)
I can confirm those late '80s early '90s BMWs were epic for long journeys. I averaged 133.3mph over 400 miles (3 hours) in my E32 chip-tuned normally aspirated E32 735iSE in the mid '90s. I filled up the 100 litre fuel tank, reset the trip counter, and hit the A7 Autobahn at 7pm up near Hannover heading down towards Munich. After 3 hours I'd used up almost all of the 100 litres and needed to fill up on the A8 Autobahn and noticed I'd done almost exactly 403 miles in 3 hours 2 minutes. No speed limits exceeded on that whole trip.
Brilliant listen , 1:21 passed by in a flash !
Wow just wow - loads more like this please Chris. The reverse engineered ev comment by Colin was pure genius
That 129 roll bar popped up on me the other day sliding my sl600 around!
It’s good to hear the voice and personality behind the by-line in the magazines.
This was a very enjoyable listen.
Thanks for sharing with us.
whenever I'm feeling down, I listen to this and just giggle. a rare and precious joy in lockdown.
I absolutely love these podcasts.. Keep them up please 👍
I was listening to this in bed before I went to sleep. My wife was very tired and already nodding off, but I had my AirPods in so I didn’t disturb. I had to about after I had woken her four times. I couldn’t stop laughing. It was just as funny on resumption next morning. Thank Chris & Colin. Can we reconvene in a pub, I’m buying for as long as you like.
Abort
Colin is a very nice man, he used to tool around in a Ranchero 😁.
Love these podcast so much. Do consider a podcast please with video, like Matt Farah or Joe Rogan. Love to listen but with the face expressions and stuff like that it does give the podcast an extra dimension. :) Further nothing to comment. Just great talks! Keep up the good work guys! :)
Forgive me for my indulgence (I can't keep on editing my first comment) but Goodwin talking about his career at CAR jogs so many memories. He was, after all, rubbing shoulders with LJK Setright, Phil Llewellyn (who also wrote LDD journals for TRUCK magazine which are legendary to this day), Richard Bremner, George Bishop and the late great Russell Bulgin of Frontline fame who I miss to this day. And you're right Chris, CAR in the late 80s/ early 90s was *the* magazine.
Really enjoyable listen. Thank you
Bloody hell. Nearly spat my tea out hearing the broken collar bone/Egypt story at 1hr 12. Colin's missus waking up with him crying 🤣
absolutely bloody brilliant. We need loads more of these to help keep our sanity. I keep toying with the idea of buying a used Mclaren 720S but I think it is just unusable on the road. I think I will buy a mk11 3.8 Jaguar instead. The bike stuff made me chuckle. Back in I think 1992 I went to Mallory to watch a couple of mates run there old race Suzuki's. One was a TZ750 and the other a TZ350. This was a proper test day not a track day. Never been to Mallory. Never raced a car or a bike. Had done a bit of karting. Had my motorcycle helmet and leathers with me. So in the afternoon I asked Mike who owned the TZ750 for a go. My mate who was with me who also rode bikes said I must be f'ing nuts. So I said to Hugh who owned the TZ350. Let me follow you around for a few laps to get an idea where it all goes. We headed down to the end of the pitlane held my arm up as I went by the marshall as though I had a wrist band on which of course I did not. Did not possess a competition license back then either. Headed out onto the track. Hugh promptly fucked off into the distance and left me floundering. Coming round Gerards the two stroke motor was out of its power band. I would gently roll a bit of throttle on, hit the power band and the bloody thing would start to take off. Then roll off then back on. I stayed out for maybe 20 minutes and survived the experience. You have to do these crazy things. I was at Donington a couple of years ago and blagged a go in a friends Porsche 962. I have a competition license and had all my gear with me. But it was an open test day with lots of single seaters out there. But life is about experiences. As a friend said to me once. If you are not living life on the edge you are just taking up space
Just superb Monkey et al, the bit about his wife waking up and finding him crying got me completely - listening while working from home and laughing far too much for my wife's liking means she keeps asking what's wrong with me 😂😂😂😂
Me too
The funniest and most gloriously insightful interview! Spooky to hear how Colin got his start. Mine was similar, when Ben Anderson was Autosport's national ed. Great stuff both.
Loved CAR magazine...
there are real some gems in this interview, never heard Colin Goodwin talking before but he is very funny. The ribs story from 1:10 is hilarious, really enjoying these interviews chris , thank you
What a giggle. Brilliant
Laughing like a drain at the tale of the Bentley at Millbrook.
just wonderful - brilliant!
Now I'm looking for my stack of old car magazines. Nothing like glossy paper and great photography to bring back memories.
I still remember Goodwin writing for CAR, especially him testing the (then new) Impreza WRX in Ireland. This bloke is a leg end (and so - IMHO - was CAR magazine in those days). IIRC Goodwin was, by his own admission, always late.
On the off-chance you're reading this Colin, thank you for so writing many, many thoroughly entertaining pieces for CAR.
[edit] I used to ride for Delta in the late 80s - the things despatch riders of that era got up to ... well what goes on on tour stays on tour /edit
Amazing should get you all back together for a one off challenge. Made my day that did.
Collin would be a perfect Top gear host
Absolutely hilarious thank you.
Fantastic!👍👍👍
Was that Chris' old green Porsche that was "Sold Recently" in the video guys ?
Mabe
Many true words spoken here!
The no Twitter thing kept me listening. I’ve been off Twitter (as well as IG and FB) for four years. Wish I could have those wasted hours back.
Fantastic
Wicked lads!
Superb
Now we finally know who the 2 jokers in their greatest joker period were in the bentley at millbrook from the podcast with Andrew Frankel
Was just thinking the same
He’s just so funny 😂
Agree with the Netflix series, have never liked F1 that much, mainly due to it's dull coverage. Netflix have brought F1 to life and now I can't wait for it to get going again.
So matter of fact. But hilarious. Perfect.
My God this was hilarious 🤣
Yaaaaay
