Good comparison video! I have the 55-200mm which I found used in a Pawn Shop for only $80, and I jumped on it. I'm using it on a classic D3400 and also sometimes on a full-frame Nikon D750, and LOVING the cropped lens perspective! Thanks for the information...
I've owned both of these lenses. The 55-300mm is a marginally better lens as long as you don't rack it all the way out to 300mm. However, I would try and pick up a used 80-200mm f2.8 for a massive jump up in image quality (no VR though).
I just got the 55-200 and so far I love it. So far I have only used it once but am getting ready to go on vacation to the Grand Canyon so we will see how it does.

I hope that you get more time to explore than I did. We got in just at sun set and left not long after sun rise the next morning. I used the 55-200 a few times but mainly stuck with my 35mm. We stayed in the Grand Canyon Village to give you an idea where we were. If you go to facebook I have a page for my photos, Mike Reid photography (profile pic is me with a llama) and got some the pics there.
We will be there for a full 3 days. I am hoping to get some amazing shots. I'll be sure to look your pics up. Likewise, I will try to post mine after the trip for the world to see. Thanks, Mike.

What's a good lens for hiking when you want to take a picture of deer some 100+ yards distant, then a flower in a path, then a bird in flight or on a tree? Clearly, changing lens is not practical, so what is a good single all-purpose lens for hiking?
Both the 55-200mm vr and 55-300mm vr are good solid basic telezoom lenses.As Matt said the 55-300mm vr advantage is its extra range but be mindful it will be a little more expensive, bigger and slightly heavier. I personally would add one more lens and recommend it over these 2 good lenses and that's the Nikon 70-300mm VR, the main advantage of this lens over the 55-300mm VR is the fact its a full frame lens so in the future if you will decide to move to FX you will have the lens to work with and will not have to sell all your DX lenses, the 70-300mm VR is slightly sharper then the 55--300mm VR and will auto focus faster. It is worth considering and is the lens I would recommend.

Hi, I'm currently looking for my very first DSLR camera to buy, I was wondering whether I should go for the Nikon D3300 with the 18-55 & 55-200 or the Canon EOS 700D, I've seen mixed reviews and I just thought I'd get your opinion, thanks!
D3300 is newer and has a faster processor wheras the 5200 is older but has some coll features like flip out screen and it has also has more AF points(39) as opposed to 11 in d3300
i own d3400 and ilove it ...no mic input put image qaulity is crazy at 24mp it looke so much better then most the stuff i see on youtube..highly recomend it..also no flip screen but like i said image qaulity in video and picture is through the roof
I had the 55-300, don't even think about that lens, it's unsharp as no other. Get the 55-200 VR II instead, it's very sharp for the price you pay.

also just fyi the 55-300 actually has VR II it just doesn't mention on the box but it does on their website.
Coming from a film backround , the plastic Mount is main concern .

The 55-300 is not VR II whereas the 55-200 is. I understand the VR II is better.

I have always shot with Prime 35mm and now consider buying something with a different focal range. Should i even look at 55-200mm?
Well, 100mm can make a difference in wild nature, .... 55 300mm is very sharp for its value.
