  • In this video, I decide to see what happens when you connect a 4K External Field Monitor to the Hero8 Media Mod. You know...just because I can. Does it work? Is there ANY use for something like this?? Check it out!

UPDATE: While setting up a runtime test on the monitor's battery, I noticed that when video mode on the GoPro is set to 1080p, there is virtually NO lag in the monitor video stream, unlike in 4K, where it is about a 1 sec. delay.

I purchased the media mod for the sole purpose of the HDMI out to one of my external monitors using the GoPro Hero 8 as a backup to my primary camera.
Like you, I noticed the obvious delay between the GoPro and my monitor in record mode.
I also wondered if recording in a lower resolution would get rid of the delay but didn't test it out yet but it sounds like you have already.
It's too bad there is that delay while recording in 4K so if I do have to use my GoPro 8 as an emergency backup camera and want to use the monitor...I guess I have to decide between trying to deal with the delay in 4K or just record in 1080p with no delay.

With Hero 7 the lag was reduced significantly when HyperSmooth was turned off. Haven't tested on the Hero 8 + Media Mod but I'm guessing it's the same.

You might have just saved my life:
Here we are, a year later, and I’m hooking a 9 with media mod to an Andycine 4 k. The delay is ridiculous.
I’m going to try turning hypersmooth off first, and if that works, cool. This is for static vlogging. If not, I’ll try 1080.
      ---
Edit: Mission accomplished just by turning off hypersmooth, and I’m shooting at 5k!
Well, it’s still set for 5k anyway, which I think I’ll leave for now to play with some intense zooming/cropping in post.

For about 3 seconds you had me fooled AND super happy. Then I looked at the red dot on the time bar and realized that I was in a fantasy world where UA-camrs couldn’t just answer the question and leave it at that. You did sucker me in for a couple more minutes tho, me in hopes of a concise tutorial. Alas, just more regular babbling. Lol

nice video. pressing mode key on the live view will let you cycle through options including record , change mode and clean hdmi.
p.s. if it were something like a blackmagic media assist then you couls record in prores or dnxhd

Thank you. Can you use the gopro app via bluetooth to a phone or tablet simultaneously with the field monitor?

I wonder why it doesn't just show the actual GoPro screen? I hooked my HERO8 up to the DC-56 and I got the same weird screen that's like a generic mapping to the GoPro interface in playback mode. I tried to use the iPhone GoPro app to control it, but it too is stuck in playback mode with no way to exit out on the phone. Then I hooked my HERO8 to my 4K TV and it all works perfectly starting in live mode. I can see the GoPro interface itself and the phone app doesn't start or get "stuck" in playback mode. Not the best but it works. Once I am in live mode, all is good.

With the 9, I never have to open the Media Mod to get to my card. I just HDMI to my Mac using Image Capture and you can transfer files like this. I assume Windows has a similar utility.

Thanks mate, good video. It makes sense to me to attach a monitor to the GoPro. I have a GoPro 10 and the quality of footage is brilliant. The big problem is that the screen is too small. I rather use a small camera than carry on the pro equipment to be honest. The footage you get with the GoPro 10 look so incredible. Worthy for sure! Now you have built in a set of different lenses and you can get a physical macro lenses too. I like to simplified equipment these days with no much compromising. For instance, I simplified my $15,000 Nikon gear for sports photography for the $2000 Sony RX10 M4 (24-600 mm). Cheers, Jorge.

I've just started playing with this one. Literally only had if for 24 hours now. I know you can send power from it to your camera, but I'm not sure if it works the other way. I'll check and see and report back. I'll also be doing a video on this monitor with my a6600 here soon. So that will get into more detail on the monitor.

    • @ReeWrayOutdoors

Not sure that'd make a difference since, if I had to guess, the lag problem likely stems from demands on the GoPro processor when it's in 4K (and/or high fps) mode.

@@ReeWrayOutdoors But there’s no lag in the camera’s main display, right? Which certainly isn’t 4k, correct?
So if it can process the data fast enough to that...and the GP display cuts out when using an external...shouldn’t it behave the same way with a low res external?
