    We once met Linus; many years ago at NCIX's first outlet store's grandopening door crasher sale in Ontario. I was struggling to balance a pair of GTX 460's in one hand, while trying to figure out how to grab two Acer 120hz gaming monitors with the other. You approached me and applauded my purchase, having reviewed the hardware yourself already; we had a brief chat as the chaos of the doorcrasher continued.
    Anyways, I've always felt you had a good taste in value and hardware -- I think this video proves it yet again. I personally like using the Senn 373d's for my computer use, as the microphone comes in handy, but I also have the HD 650's and I think they are the best headphones you can get for at home listening. I use them for watching movies mainly.
    I now also have the HD 6XX -- ordered them early on in the drop sale. $298 CAD. Glad to see we still share the same eye for value and performance.

    4 years later and it's still one of the best value headphones out there imo. Very few sound as good and detailed as these do at this price range even with all the new headphones on the market. Only two that I can think of are the HD560s also by Sennheiser and the Hifiman HE400se.

      What about the Sundara ? Been hearing a lot about it and want to buy them but their poor build quality is throwing me off. I'm leaning more towards the 6XX right now.

    • @ゼロワンそれが俺の名だ
      @ゼロワンそれが俺の名だ 3 роки тому +2

      @@someHandle95 Sundara I'd consider a direct upgrade to the 6XX outside of midrange. The problem is that the Sundara is 130 usd more than the 6XX so it depends on whether or not you're willing to pay the additional price for them. Overall I'd put them in the same tier with 6XX being a specialist in regards to vocals and the Sundara being a better all-rounder.
      In regards to build quality, I can't really say much other than the fact that there is reverse-survivorship bias in regards to the cases we hear, so I personally don't know if their QC issues are actually that bad or not.
      If you want a safe bet though, you could get the Hifiman HE400se first. In my eyes they're sort of like a Sundara lite. They come close to the Sundara's sound, just not being as detailed or fast in attack. They're a good indicator as if you like that sound, then you'll likely like the Sundara's too. 400se are currently 150 usd I think.

    • @someHandle95
      @someHandle95 3 роки тому +2

      @@ゼロワンそれが俺の名だ Wow! Thank you for the detailed answer man!
      Really appreciate it.
      I can actually get the Sundara for $280 since I have an ongoing offer on my credit card. I guess at 280 they're kind of a no brainer. However, I'll still wait for the holiday season and see if I can get them for even lower.
      Another question, can the Sundara be driven without an amp ? I currently don't have one and won't get one if the Sundara can make do without them.

    • @ゼロワンそれが俺の名だ
      @ゼロワンそれが俺の名だ 3 роки тому +2

      @@someHandle95 danggg. Sundara's for 280 usd are a great steal!
      As for amplification, well you could probably make do without one, but I'd still advise you to go and get an amp for it to sound better. As it is a planar with low sensitivity, I'd recommend an amp so as to be able to power it sufficiently to get the most out of it. Something cheap like Schiit Magni 3+ or JDS Labs Atom would do just fine with the Sundara. If you wanna skim your budget a bit more, then a dongle like the Tempotech Sonata HD Pro would be my recommendation. I'd still recommend paying a bit more for the aforementioned amps as they can power like 95% of the headphones out there should you ever decide to upgrade from the Sundara though.
      Edit: as for DAC's, I recommend the apple USB-C dongle as a cheap but really efficient solution. Measures quite well and if you wanna connect them to your PC, just get a usb-c to usb adapter. You can then plug it into the amp using a 3.5mm jack to RCA connector cable.

    To my ears these 3rd Gen Air pods are more comfortable compared to the newer Pro version with the soft gel tips. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxgl8SzyQoymMu-S3V55Dskg5QJ8xr1yCR That said, compared to the 3rd Gen, I notice these do not stay planted in the ear as well. One design issue I think, is you squeeze the stem and click it twice to advance your songs. On 3rd gen you tap the large speaker. The difference is by grabbing the stem each time, you tend to loosen the bud fit in your ear. Not always, but the bud falls out a few times while running. The old tap to change never had that problem for me. I would not have changed that tap function. That said, the newer Pro version sticks in the ear, almost airtight if you want that. I do not like that Airtight fit. So that's why I'd stay with this version as the best trade off of comfort, use, and overall feel.

    Still have my HD650 for over 7/8 years now in 2021. I liked them over a more expensive Beyerdynamic DT1990 Pro (500+$). Also had the HD660s, but I dont find them necessarily any better than my HD650 in comparison. Getting the HD6xx for 200$ or less is an absolute no brainer. Really, really insane for that price even in 2021! Despite they surely run on a mobile device, if you listen on a pc, make sure you get a good DAC/AMP since they scale very well. (I had an AudioEngine D1 DAC/AMP, and for everyday use I have a Soundblaster X7 external DAC/AMP) Like Linus says as well, also they are so super comfortable, Cant go wrong with these!

      I bought my pair used for 250 $. When you are looking for a used pair don't be to picky, they are a great build quality and a five year old pair isn't close to breaking. You can also save a lot if you buy some where the paint is chipping of. Don't take the paint falling of as a bad sign. The paint job on all hd 650 are shit and it is gonna fall of at some point, so it's not a sign of the headphones being mistreated. Just paint them yourself, it's gonna be better anyways since they are butt ugly (that's what I did).
      When that is said, waiting for these to return is also a good option, and is what I myself would do.

I ended up getting my HD600 last month for $800 USD, then I hear they're like $200 in USA/Canada and it's UNREAL... at the very least I got the made in Ireland HD600s, not the new ones made in Romania, I read from a few reviews that both sound identical but one can't be sure until more expert reviews come out and with such a pricetag I wasn't going to gamble on that.

I'm literally so excited again to receive these and use them for years lol. Like I said couldn't have said it better myself these headphones shit on most and for the price are unbeatable.

    so for those getting excited, there are some unmentioned cavities to these headphones
    1) you WILL need an amplifier for these cans, despite what some people are claiming in the comments you can run them off a phone, which you can, but at that point, you may as well just get a regular pair of headphones. Don't use these on an iPhone, on linuses part this was very poor advice. if you want these style of headphone for a portable device look at the 58X or the 660S if you have the budget
    2) these are not portable headphones,. they have massive sound leakage meaning you will annoy everyone by wearing these when out and about. for those who don't know, open back means that he sound can leak out of both sides of the driver and everyone can hear what you're listening to
    3) a DAC is highly recommended as it will mean you are getting everything out of these headphones
    just something to bear in mind if you plan on getting some of these

    I just ordered a pair of these. I spent the whole weekend deliberating between these and the HD560S. It was a tough choice but I want a more enjoyable listening experience for music and movies/media. These seem to have a nice warmer sound while delivering really good overall performance.
    The HD560S seem to have better soundstaging, imaging and flatter sound. That seems great for analytical listening and pinpointing other people in FPS games but I don't care about that. I want a fun sound that delivers a nice enjoyable experience.

      I also ordered the HD560S just now. I need to know what they both sound like to really come to a good conclusion/decision. Might sell the pair I don't like as much, unless I have a good use case for both.
      The 560S look much nicer/futuristic. Also smaller and lighter. Have certain qualities that supersede the 6XX.
      The 6XX seems like higher quality in terms of build and sound, better in this regard. I don't like how there are 2 cables (one on each side/can). They're also larger and stick out more (doesn't matter that much but a small detail of note).
      There are just way too many options these days, I had such bad decision paralysis that I couldn't settle for just one of them.

    I personally have had a bad consumer experience with Massdrop. I ordered the $100 hifiman he350's, my first set of open back headphones from them in july this year, forgetting to check the estimates ship date, which turned out to be something like august 20th. Realizing my mistake, I still thought it was worth an almost 2 month wait considering the good reviews I have read and watched of them, and the fact that they're so darn cheap for the quality you are getting. A week or so rolls by and the estimated shipping date is changed to SEPTEMBER 30th! They gave me the option to cancel the order and I did gladly. While there is no doubt in my mind that they sell quality products, some of them you may be paying for more in time.

    This video is five years old. FIVE. And yet there’s still loads of new comments. There’s still people watching this for the first time. The article/purpose of this video is still relevant. “Why?” you might ask. Well that’s because the subject, these headphones, are still great. They’re never not going to be great. Headphones, at least the traditional kind without batteries or complex circuitry, never stop sounding as good as they do, and they will never stop being as useful as they are. This can even be said of used headphones, so long as they were listened to with a modicum of care. A good pair of headphones can and should last you a lifetime under normal use, but you just don’t see products that actually do that being released any more. As a matter of fact, Linus just did a video not too long ago about how Sennheiser sold their whole headphones division. It wouldn’t be insane to assume that some part of their “demise” is due to the fact that the people that buy their headphones often never have to replace them. Fortunately, these headphones are still available from Drop, as well as most of the HD600 and 800 lineup elsewhere online. If you’re in the market for a quality open-back listening experience and you don’t want to ever replace them, this is probably the right product for you. If you want to save money, you can even wait for them to be on sale like I did. They were $179, and still under $200 after tax and shipping. Or, because these will always sound good and so will the HD600’s or 580’s or 650’s or 660’s, you can buy a pair used. Ear pads clapped out or a manky old beat up cable on some used ones you found for $50-100? Perfect. Rip those pads and the cable off, buy new ones for ~$40, and viola, an excellent listening experience is yours for years or even DECADES to come. This basic design has been available under one model name or another since the 80’s, and that’s because they just work SO WELL that they didn’t feel the need to do any major changes. And if you do buy these and don’t like them for whatever reason, return them. Or if they are used, don’t fret. Just because you didn’t like them doesn’t mean someone else won’t buy them from you and enjoy them. These will almost always have resale value (to the right people).
    Just a fair warning though, be prepared to buy an amp for these headphones because no, they don’t sound “just fine” plugged into any old mobile device. Something simple like a FiiO BTR3K or BTR5 or the ES100 will be perfect for mobile use if that’s what you’re after.

    I had some Sennheiser headphones a while back. They are OK if you live alone or you have a separate computer room but if your PC room is connected, in any way, with a room occupied by people who are talking or watching TV then steer very clear of these. In the end I went with some Sony MDR-1A's instead. Build quality is good, they are closed - so they won't annoy anyone around you. They have a frequency response range of 4hz -192Khz when coupled with a HD audio output (front panel headphone jacks are out of the question). The cable running from your MB to that front audio output is extremely low quality and renders the perfectly balanced, supplied OFC cable pointless. They should be connected directly to the rear output or to a headphone amp via optical audio out.
    People might say that the frequencies are out of the range of human hearing capabilities, which is true. However, they are very noticeably different when playing audio from a DVD, Bluray, or FLAC file (originally created in FLAC, not converted from CD to FLAC) through your PC with your audio settings set to 24bit 192000hz. The bass is tight and evenly balanced and the high end is sharp and clear. Of course it's personal preference in the end but I found I didn't need to mess around with an equalizer with these, they are so well balanced. Not uncomfortable during extended use but the downside is that the ear covers wear out pretty quickly. I've had mine for about a year now and the edges are starting to fray a little so I'll probably replace them on the weekend. Another downside is you only get a 1.2m cable. This is deliberate as it provides less resistance and thus less signal loss but you can buy a 3m replacement cable (not one of those cheap 10 - 20$ ones) for around 80$.

    Those aren't HD650s at 1:50. Those are HD600s.
    The HD650 cable has the black, longer proprietary end like on the HD6XX but is terminated as a 6,35mm. It comes with a cable style 3,5mm adapter. The cable marked as HD650 at 1:50 is actually an HD600 cable. The HD600 cable's identification marks are a proprietary end with red for right and black for left and a 3,5mm termination with a little bump where the 6,35mm adapter ends. The HD600 cable is also thinner than that of the HD650.

    I just came up with a genious idea, why dont Headphone companies make removable and attachable headphone cups, so you can have open back and close back headphone whenever you want?

    • @xnoreq
      @xnoreq 8 років тому

      It's not an ingenious idea, because almost all of the cost is in the cups so it makes no sense to offer removable cups. Just buy closed-back headphones.

      pieter baelde jansen Which ones? The DT880 is similar to the DT770 in terms of a fairly flat frequency response (the 770s are often used in low budget studios and are the main reason the more professional DT 1770s are around). The 990s are a bit more fun sounding. More bass, more treble, excellent for gaming.

      bublik11 nah they tend to have a very flat response which I prefer. They're especially good for musicians and engineers looking for a pair of headphones to mix on that won't color the sound, which in my experience, sennheisers headphones do.

      +taiiat Sennheisers tend to be slightly bass-leaning throughout their range, although like Linus said, generally not to the extent of bleeding into and obscuring the rest of the frequency range. Pretty much the only one known to deviate from that house sound is the top-end HD800, w/c is quite a bit more expensive than the HD600 series.

      Alexander Mustermann Higher impedance represents an easier load on an amplifier, believe it or not. It draws less current.

    • @styxwickorfrost811
      @styxwickorfrost811 8 років тому +6

      Impedance kinda only mattered when it came to tube amps, which added color to headphones. An example on why impedance isn't a good indication on how hard a headphone is to drive are the likes of the HE-500 from Hifiman. 50 ohms of impedance, the Schiit Stack is barely able to actually power it before barely starting to introduce distortion due to low ass sensitivity per voltage (???)/wattage (???)/whatever.

    • @styxwickorfrost811
      @styxwickorfrost811 8 років тому +1

      Alexander Mustermann not really. Its more of its not loud enough for the user because not all ears are equal (trust me, I've found myself using an amp with M50's due to my ears being insensitive due to pretty much a freak accident which has weakened my hearing on both ears).
