There are 2 types of body fat. Subcutaneous fat makes up most of our bodily fat and is found under the skin. This is the body's method of storing energy for later use. Visceral fat is found in the abdomen amongst the major organs.
Visceral fat can cause health issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and some cancers (stomach & colorectal).
Asians demonstrate greater visceral fat storage (termed android obesity) despite lower body mass index (BMI) values.
Therefore being/looking skinny is just one facet.
Knowing this fact. When "speaking" about body fat, one must specify which one. As more and more people reside in a more sedentary lifestyle due to urbanisation, westernisation (of food patterns) and globalisation.
There has been a proven augmentation in metabolic fats in people and their respective consequences. Luckily big "pharma" is there to provide treatments & cures without really trying to weed out (ban) potential/susceptible elements which causes elevated levels 😮

I was in Vietnam, and saw people and kids are getting fat from eating American fast food. It's more about diet and lifestyle. Your body adapt to what you do.

Yup. My 1st visit to VN nearly 20 yrs ago - most ppl were slim. Visited again recently and teens/ early 20s ppl are fatter. Didn't see the small kids since they were in school & I didn't go to the school zones. It's also due to the rising middle class - more ppl have disposable income to spend on fast food.

I had a Japanese classmate one time tell me she gained weight about 10lbs or so when she's here during college. 10lbs doesn't sound like a lot but for a skinny person that's always been stable, that is a lot. I am Chinese/Taiwanese-American, love both my parent home cooking, Asian foods, but also Western food as well. I definitely think Asian food in general is really healthy especially when you go down to basic cooking. It was only latter in life that I realize my mom cooks so healthy, simple, but also a huge variety. It can be taken for granted until you see how diet really affects weight, risk for heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, etc. Bottom line is its great to have the "skinny gene" but don't always rely on that, because dietary and lifestyle factors overtime affects genes and overall health outcomes (nutigenomics).

A diet abundant in refined carbs creates a wider waistline for most people. A diet with more fiberous whole foods like Chinese Broccoli, water crest, and bokchoy OR a daily dose of kimchi will keep the waistline thinner.

I agree but it's not only the food, it's also the drinks - fancy coffees and milk teas which are high in calories. Those iced lattes with cream on top and milk teas can be 300 to 400 calories, depending on inclusions. If the daily caloric requirements are ~1200 for female and ~1500 for males, 400 calories daily for fancy coffees would quickly add up, esp if living a sedentary lifestyle. (I'm an older millennial from SE Asia and didn't have those fancy coffees/ teas as a teen/ early 20s. The teens now in SE Asia are generally fatter.)

When it was my turn to be let in, the bouncer checked my ID & congratulated me. He thought I was PREGNANT! I was completely mortified & felt so embarrassed!! Back then, I lived on junk & fast food, and my family’s home cooking. Never drank water, only sodas & had a major sweet tooth. Now, as a much older & wiser adult I do intermittent fasting, drink lots of water, consume more protein, vegetables & get a moderate amount of exercise. You eat to live, not live to eat. The media keeps telling people carbs is bad, this is full load of Bs. The Asian diet consists of heavy carbs with little portion of meat. This been that way for thousands of years where we eat big portion of rice, wheats with veggie dishes and small portion of meat. This is almost the same way for middle eastern, Italians etc. Carbs are needed for most athletes in order to perform at their highest level

yup.. rice + vegetables; some families can't afford to eat meat; because it could be too expensive. fermented foods, like a kim chi/chee, due to no refrigerators/ice boxes; the use of fish sauce/shrimp paste/Bagoóng (Filipino fish sauce; sometimes, it is made out of anchovies) in the dishes. I still love to eat snacks or ramen/saimin noodles laced with MSG (monosodium glutamate); anything with palm oil, palm sugar or condenesed milk; highly processed foods with nitrates, like: Libby's corned beef (from Brazil), Libby's vienna sausages, SPAM (the original; Treet or Tulip (Denmark luncheon meat), slow cooked Lechon (a very popular but expensive Filipino dish; aka "Babi Guling (suckling pig)" (at an "Ibud Oka" restaurant in Bali); think of Baken-Et's "Pork Rinds") or portugese sausages. I like ice cream and yogurt, yet I am lactose intolerant (2/3 of East (China, Taiwan; Japan, the two Koreas, Mongolia); South (India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Myanmar/Burma) and Central Asian (Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan) regions & stuck with the Asian glow (whenever I drink alcohol). The Korean "Turtle Chips" looks good. Mukbang videos = it is like an AYCE buffet.

There's a reason Asian BMI is considered a distinct category. Genetic influences have a lot more to do with it than diet. Japanese cuisine might be healthy compared to the Western diet, but the typical Chinese diet isn't exactly full of healthy foods. East Asians generally have ectomorph frames, which is the typical swimmer's/sprinter's body.
If we can acknowledge that attributes like height or eye/hair color are determined by hereditary factors, why wouldn't that also apply to weight? The detractors who believe our life outcomes are solely determined by our environment are either entirely ignorant or have their heads in the sand.

Korea and Japan in the last 40 years have 10× their intake of beef and dairy, resulting into taller and heavier generations. While other races have remained steady, asians as a whole are getting bigger and taller at a faster rate.
Europeans used to be very small. You can tell these in ancient ruins. But, Europe flourished, resulting into the current height they are now.
Even 20 years ago, it was rare to see 6 foot asians and obesed Asians. Now, they are common in Korea and growing in number in Japan. This, along with a growing number of health problems typically more common in the West.
Vietnamese, however, remained unchanged because they are poorer on average and only eat right portions of meat.
They are skinny for a reason. They dont eat excess amounts. People get obesed because of excess fat intake their body dont need which can only be rid of through physical activity.
While Asians are getting taller on average, the rest of the world have become steady. Human bone structure can only on average go as far as gravity allows it. Humans as a whole can only grow on average of a certain height. This, may explain why this phenomenon of Asians getting taller at a faster rate is happening.
Asian american kids are taller than their parents, but it is not just happening in America. It is happening in many parts of Asia.
In conclusion, Asians are indeed getting bigger vertically and horizontally.

Yeah this complete non-sense. Asians typically are smaller in size compared to other groups but they are capable of obesity like anyone else. There are plenty of overweight Asian Americans and plenty of Overweight Asians in Asian countries.
Asian cuisine, while delicious, is definitely not healthy either. Korean BBQ is like 2000-3000 plus calories after your meal especially if it's AYCE. Chinese food is incredibly greasy and fattening. Japanese food, I will argue is healthier. Thai Food is healthier than most other Asian cuisines as well but still full of oil and carbs.

    • @Revenger3rdUnit
      @Revenger3rdUnit 3 місяці тому +1

Disagree. Chinese is definitely not greasy or fattening you must be referring to take out spots which are considered the fast food version of it and you are mentioning all you can eat Korean bbq? Majority of Asians are slimmer than the rest and less obese overall. The study proves that now.

    say what?
That's assuming all Asians are skinny
That's ignoring possible differences between people of Asian ancestry in the U.S. vs Asians in Asia
and the study only applies to Han Chinese, It really doesn't make sense to apply it to all Asians.
It probably has more to do with diet and peer pressure. From what I've seen, Asians do not let up on weight, Even if you're a stranger.
These figures increased to 22% after researchers used personalized BMI calculations for Asian adults.
Based on the personalized BMI calculations, researchers found variations within six Asian American subgroups. About one in four Filipino, Japanese, and Asian Indian; one in six Korean; and one in eight Vietnamese and Chinese Americans had obesity, based on self-reported height and weight. The authors conclude the findings could help healthcare providers and public health practitioners identify and support adults at greatest risk.
-Variations exist among Asian American adults with obesity
Also, these studies are talking about BMI not body fat percentage.
I wish these studies would look at body fat percentage, knowing that is more accurate.
%BF was highest among Hispanic males (28.2%) and females (35.7%). %BF was lower among non-Hispanic Black (23.9%) compared with non-Hispanic White (26.0%) and non-Hispanic Asian (26.6%) males. There was no difference between non-Hispanic Black females (32.7%) and non-Hispanic White (33.2%) or non-Hispanic Asian (32.7%) females. FMI was higher among Hispanic youth compared with non-Hispanic White youth. Among youth with underweight/healthy weight, predicted %BF and FMI were lower among non-Hispanic Black males (−2.8%; −0.5) and females (−2.0%; −0.3), compared with non-Hispanic White youth, and higher among Hispanic males (0.9%; 0.2) and females (2.0%; 0.5), while %BF but not FMI was higher among non-Hispanic Asian males (1.3%) and females (1.4%). Among females with obesity, non-Hispanic Asian females had lower %BF (−2.3%) and FMI (−1.7) than non-Hispanic White females
-Body fat differences among U.S. youth aged 8-19 by race and Hispanic origin, 2011-2018

    • @sjacks3281
      @sjacks3281 3 місяці тому

Asian-American women had the lowest BMI (21.5 kg/m2) but the second highest PBF (27.8%). Linear association between BMI and PBF was the weakest (r2 = 0.09) among Asian-American women and BMI had the poorest sensitivity (37%) to detect PBF. The high PBF with low BMI pattern exhibited by Asian-American women suggests that they could escape detection for obesity-related disease if BMI is the sole measure that estimates body composition.

If this research is peer reviewed and is repeatable, then this would go beyond diet and exercise. Genetics is something that is relatively difficult to overcome with diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices alone. I guess I would count it as a “perk” of being East Asian… but it’s in balance with other pros and cons of your genetics.
    There’s always exceptions, of course!

15:14 You can artificially induce that state not through genes, but gut bacteria. The more you eat crxppy food, the more you facilitate the growth of harmful bacteria that make you crave more and more worse stuff, and the more you restrict yourself to healthy food, the more the healthy bacteria are able to flourish and outnumber the harmful ones. Sort of like if you compare the pxlxcxng policies in Japan vs. California or something, but inside your body.
More evidence keeps coming out showing how much your gut biome actually heavily influences your emotions much more than the vast majority of things that could influence how you feel and think.
So eating healthy, doing probiotics, and various other more niche gut health measures will make jxnk food taste grxss. I remember in Txxwxn this one hapa girl I talked to said she grew up never eating meat, and one time she tried frxxd chxckxn and then just instantly pxked everywhere.

4:51 Eating more carbs will make you more fxt. I think the main reasons are that American food is way more processed, has way more sugar, and way less vegetables, in that order. Also the culture is more sedentary and people drive everywhere and barely walk, even in most major cities. Beef and milk are not a major problem, and probably more of actually a good thing overall in terms of keeping a healthy weight, if you're eating those instead of processed food or sugar.
The American and European obsession with beef and dairy goes back to the ancient proto-Indo-Europeans in the Eurasian steppe who had a nomadic pastoralist lifestyle highly dependent on cows in specific (which is why Hindus worship them), which is extremely similar to the lifestyle of Mongolian, Turkic, Tungusic, Siberian, and most other North and Central Asian groups whom the Indo-Europeans genetically branched off from before settling in the North Caucasus and admixing with them to become genetically Caucasian themselves.
Nomadic pastoralism is also why the symbols of Hinduism, Buddhism, European Paganism/Folk Religion, Daoism, and lots of other non-Abrahamic Eurasian and Native American religions (Native Americans being an extremely diverse group of offshoots of North Asians) use very naughty swirly symbols (representing wheels among other things) to represent their beliefs, since they were nomads and had horses and cows, etc. pulling all their stuff around in wheeled chariots, wagons, etc., sort of like the Oregon Trail but all year round permanently.
