Creepy Tornado in Giant Bear's Cage - Lewistown, IL - 4/4/2023

  • In the late evening of April 4th, 2023, a single dominant supercell darkened the sky over much of western Illinois. Under its enormous mothership base lie an equally huge bear cage, transitioning between classic and high precipitation modes, teasing the bear that dropped multiple times.
    The tornado missed Lewistown to the north, but a strong rear-flanking downdraft (RFD) took down signs and power lines across town. On Route 100, multiple homes look to have sustained heavy damage. As of the evening of 4/4, several injuries were reported, but no lives lost (cross fingers).
    With multiple roads blocked by downed power lines and trees, emergency vehicles struggled enough to get to where they were needed, without a chaser jam. After searching a (thankfully abandoned-looking) house, I decided my vehicular presence was a greater hinderance than help, and that the best course of action this time was to get out of the way.
    Shout out to Ethan and @kansascitychasers - you guys seemed pumped to start the season with a successful chase!
    Correction: 00:08 Car stops on Route 24 about 7:15pm CDT. Got my timestamps messed up. Footage from hand held of tornado formation starts at 7:16pm CDT.

      Thank you! I do my best to stay composed, but you can just make out a bit of cussing when the winds hit me in town, just before the power lines spark. Haha emotions are running high, so after some intense chases I've been cutting other chasers a lot more slack when it comes to outbursts.

      @Michael McClellan WX I hear you. I have seen chasers who yell every time they see something. That really diminishes my watching experience. Others use heavy, grating music as a background. That turns me right off. I'm quite the purist. And your video was a breath of fresh air. Talking during the chase, like Pecos Hank, is good with me too. I've never heard him scream or loudly cuss. Looking forward to watching your next intercept.

    -Subscribed.
    -Pardon the dumb questions but is a "bear cage" the giant ring of clouds that rotate with a tornado or am I conflating this with a "collar cloud'?
    -Also, does "mother ship" refer to the entire super cell structure or is this something else?
    -This is amazing footage. Watching the power of these storms is almost a mystical experience. I've lived in Illinois almost my entire life but have never actually seen a tornado.
    I would just once like to witness the behemothic force.

    • @MichaelMcClellanWX
      @MichaelMcClellanWX  Рік тому +6

      Thank you! Not dumb questions at all. The bear's cage refers to the streaks of precipitation that sometimes wrap around from the backside of the storm to hide the main areas of rotation (including tornadoes and wall clouds). They look very much like "curtains" that are spiraling around the storm and make visibility difficult. The bear's cage will form below the "mothership" which is the entire mesocylone, or updraft area of the storm, and can be seen in the brief timelapse at the beginning of the video.
      Great feedback, and I will continue to work on better text overlays. I'm currently relying on what I would have liked to known when I was starting off watching tornado videos, and trying to figure out what the heck is happening. I agree it's all very lingo heavy and we chasers can do a better job of making this approachable.
      Never too late to start chasing! Illinois is a fantastic chase location, as it's flat with a great road network that makes it easy to get out of the storm's way. I also recommend following @skiptalbot, who's my Illinois-based storm chasing hero and has fantastic educational videos that helped get me started a few years back.

      @@MichaelMcClellanWX Wow thanks Michael for the the kind reply and in-depth explanation. You're right about the voluminous jargon in chasing, but this is the case in many disciplines. I'll check back periodically and perhaps offer some more neophyte questions; I have a gazillion!
      For one, I'm amazed at how you chasers know what direction to go amidst such chaos. One day I'd at least like to have a basic understanding of the structure of storms and how to read the clouds so I can react intelligently if I'm ever in that situation.
      I will look up @skiptalbot. Thanks for the recommendation and best of luck with your channel and future endeavors!

    • @MichaelMcClellanWX
      @MichaelMcClellanWX  Рік тому

      I've been checking out other chaser videos, and reports are that there were multiple tornadoes. From my perspective it looked like the same circulation that touched down at the beginning of the video, but at 2:50 finally had a funnel that condensed the entire way. At that point, I was on Route 24 just south of Lewistown looking north.

      @@MichaelMcClellanWX tornadoes seldom go south or west of where they begin for any appreciable period. I was wondering if chasers make it a habit to stay south and west of a tornado’s path/ track. Is there an archive of past storm chaser’s itinerary/ course while observing? They seem not to have GPS/ time stamps. What’s the situation if I might ask. Thanks.

    Got some good shots of the tornado. I like the shot of the sparking wires, but I could tell from your sigh that you also felt that was not a good position. Positions like that can happen, but nothing happened there. Viewers always want chasers searching homes, but you really need to be careful. Fresh damage can easily make a storm chasers in shorts and a tee shirt a victim. Falling into basements, cutting yourself on tin, putting a nail thru you sneaker or flip flop. Structural beams collapsing causing head injuries. Downed wires, fresh rain, metal poles can light you up fast. Good video.

      Thank you! I believe this was the same one to hit Chris, but to be honest it's tough to tell from the footage I've seen so far. This was a huge storm with reports of multiple circulations around this time, so I'm not sure if the storm cycled a new tornado ahead of this one and caught him off guard.

    Pretty reckless chasing dude. Driving right into an inflow jet?

    • @MichaelMcClellanWX
      @MichaelMcClellanWX  Рік тому +3

      RFD is an expected hazard on a storm this big, and I was well south of the tornadic circulations at that point in the video. It's absolutely fair to question the recklessness of storm chasing close to any updraft area. I would argue my recklessness was mid-pack in relation to the other chasers on this storm. So I think "pretty reckless" is apt 😅

    What is "RFD"?

    • @MichaelMcClellanWX
      @MichaelMcClellanWX  Рік тому +1

      RFD is Rear-Flanking Downdraft, which is a cool downburst of air that cuts through the back of the storm and wraps around back to the front, usually causing strong straight-line winds just behind and to the south of the base. I'll continue to try to provide better context for jargon going forward.

    I grew up with this in No. IL in the 60s-80s. No video, little radar.
    Mostly, it was a matter of watching the sky and deciding when to get to the storm cellar.
    No idea how many hunnerts of storms with straight line winds (un-reported) and/or tornados (undected) blasted thru unrecorded.
