They obviously needed each other at different times in their lives and for different things. We should all be pleased and honoured that in the times they were together they created some of the most iconic music for us all to enjoy.
I flew in from Germany to Los Angeles to attend a concert of S&G's 2003 "Old Friends" reunion tour. I will NEVER forget this night singing along my musical heroes for more than three decades with tears in my eyes.
The very best harmonious grassroots folk duo ever, so many brilliant artists in all genres seem tormented lost souls in real life . Fame and money rarely equal happiness . Their music is iconic and cultural , it always takes me back to places and people from the early 70's when they were part of everyones record collection.
They were the "sound" of an era. Simon shouldn't feel guilt in his old age - they both gave their all really and they don't owe the world anything more. We should let them gracefully back off and let us keep their wonderful legacy.
And in this case it is also true. They are 5 years older than I am, so in 1966 I was in my senior year in High School when Sound of Silence was hot, they have been an important part of my life and I can still hear them and experience the feelings of my youth. And when you realize that all that brought just trouble, disturbance, depression in their individual and professional life that is truly tragic. They have given so much to the audience and got so little for their own comfort (and I am not talking about money, cars and houses)-
I have loved their music since the early 70’s, one of the greatest, if not the greatest duo’s ever. I just wish that they had kept together and released more.
The greatest duo of all time and my favorite since I discovered them in the early 60’s to the present . I just hope that in spite of their turmoil and hits and misses; they are still my best.
I just don't understand why people can't get along? Most musicians would kill to have a career like they had! Let alone written a song like Bridge over troubled water, and perform it like they did! But they will always be loved! S&G will live forever! Love you guys!!
"The Boxer" is my favorite Simon & Garfunkel song. It is a masterpiece and epic recording. Even though they have a turbulent relationship, I believe they are still friends. How could they not be after so many years?
What a legacy! My favorite is Sounds of Silence. Not because it's popular, but I love the harmonies, and then a couple of years ago, I got to learn how to play and sing it with another musician. During our rehearsals, we tried to understand what the song was really saying. After diagnosing every line, we determined the song is not about being silent, but about speaking up about things that matter to us all. That was happening among the public when it the song became known, and applies in today's era much the same way. Thanks for the video!
I attended Paul’s last show of his final tour at MSG. It was incredible. He had so many standing ovations and he was very humble about it. It was really something to stand there watching him and his band give their very best knowing this was it. It was an incredibly rare moment that aligned everyone’s mind together.
I worked for both of them. Art Garfunkel was by far the biggest diva I’ve ever come across on the road. To say he was difficult is an understatement. However, the show he gave was stellar!
He sounded like an angel on Troubled Waters, I for one could never fall out of love with him after that. Sometimes the persona of a pop star is different from their true life, but they can "get" as well as have both sides and both were gracious enough with their audiences......
There music is so beautiful it is very hard to believe we still do not listen to it today in stores or on the radio. It is hard to understand and believe this music is generational. The interesting texture of the arrangement of the instruments with the depth of the lyrics leaves a person like myself who is sappy and has not always seen life with a clear lens spell bound and mystified.

I saw Simon and Garfunkel in early 1967 at the Carousel theater in West Covina, Ca. on the same bill with the Buckinghams. It was a small kind of circle theater and I got a seat (about $5 as I recall) about a couple rows back from the stage They just blew me away with their sounds --loved it. They took a break and I was in the lobby and saw Art by himself leaning against the wall having a smoke. I walked and chatted with him a bit before some girls saw him and that was it. But, I witnessed their true music talent that night, before they moved on to the big time.
I went to one of Paul Simon’s reunion tour concerts in 2018... it was a beautiful experience. I would love to see Artie perform, but I fear that time is running out. I hope they both live to see a better time than the one we’re having now.
For me...it's the other way round...saw Artie perform live @ Glastonbury 2016, I was right in front singing along...would love to see Paul Simon, I'll be 69 in December...hoping for a reunion🎼☮️❤🇮🇳

Interesting video, snd partly a sad story. But their legacy of wonderful music will remain. And their music will until I die, to be a part of my life. Mostly the music with them together - Simon and Garfulnkel music.

They acted like spoiled school children, however God bless them for their music. Artists can be tortured, different... This is the price for creating unforgettable pieces of art...
We might not even know about them, had it not been for producer Tom Wilson, who overdubbed The Sound of Silence with electric instruments, turning the track into a #1 pop hit, helping to launch the folk-rock genre. Simon and Garfunkel, who had already split, re-united after the hit, and the rest is history.

I've loved Simon and Garfunkel since I was a kid back in the early 70s. Just never understood why Simon felt the need to make snarky public remarks. No need to be a douche.
My mother did payroll for a small town factory. When she picked me up after school she said we were going back into town to the music shop. There was a song that played over the radio that day. Bridge Over Troubled Water! It was the first time our local station had ever played it. She bought the album, and started my love for Simon and Garfunkel. I was 8 at the time.
Paul Simon has done Great things, notably 'Graceland' , 1987. Garfunkel had Very little input besides 'Harmony singing'. Paul 'Wrote it, Played it, Sang it, Created it' especially Afterwards.
I'm an older Gen X and I record and play music and I was thinking tonight about the earliest records I'm aware of really listening to 10-11 or so because I bought my first album and 45s at 12 or 13. What was in my mom's record collection were the first albums I was conscious of. Two seminal groups, Mamas and Papas: If you Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears, and Simon and Garfunkel's SOunds of SIlence and Parsley, Sage had the musical seeds that were planted in my brain and still remain - ha ha. SImon's songs include such mind-blowing genius melodies, plus he nailed the lyrics far beyond the chance of a billion people. Most songs this good are written by two people, but SImon nailed them, and Garfunkel did a great job singing them. The Boxer alone is such an incredible statement. That kind of talent is so unwordly, you have to talk about conduits, because even Simon can't understand how he did it.
I loved this duo and try to keep an open mind about what happened. But I can't find an instance of Garfunkel saying anything negative about Simon -- instead, he seems to have thanked him often and generously. On the other hand, Simon has made a number of negative comments about his old partner. I'm not taking sides here -- if anyone can correct my impression I'd be happy to hear it.
Martha S, I read that Paul was jealous that Art got a huge standing ovation for Bridge and said "I wrote that song" to the interviewer. I love that Paul was a genius but he could never have performed Bridge as well as Art did and I think it must have hurt his ego. Short men are usually insecure and I can attest to that. Art was probably 6ft but the years have shortened him. I feel sure there are regrets on both sides but their amazing duets still overshadow any bitterness between them.
@@marywallace4086 Kind of ironic that one could write "Bridge Over Troubled Water," the other could sing it beautifully, but that the two of them together couldn't bridge the troubled waters of their own relationship. Sad.

We were very happy at that time. At that time they made my life a dream... 😭😭😭. Now my life is a nightmare. And you what do you feel inside? Friendship.
Simon is not grown up yet!! Forgiveness is a great gift. 💞 Love there songs. I 🙏 he can do it 🌈😘
I've loved Simon and Garfunkel since I was a kid back in the early 70s.
Became a multimillionaire...such a tragedy!
Absolutely the most completely inclusive, deep and meaningful 15 min summation of s&g i've ever seen.
They had fame and fortune and lived lives full. Not tragic at all maybe ordinary life is
Fame and fortune isn’t everything
@@markdoherty3024 its better to have it than not...certainly it isnt tragic...
Thank you both for your wonderful sounds !
Big fan, love love love the album Graceland🎶
Paul Simon has done Great things, notably 'Graceland' , 1987. Garfunkel had Very little input besides 'Harmony singing'. Paul 'Wrote it, Played it, Sang it, Created it' especially Afterwards.
@@q4991comparing the talents of Art to Paul just isn’t fair..
A more appropriate comparison would be Paul’s left pinky
I saw both Simon &Garfunkel separately . Both were AWESOME!!!!
Damn, I wish I had a life as tragic as these two.
Sad.
I was at the reunion concert in 1981 at Central Park. Garfunkel also paid tribute to Simon giving him great songs to sing.
Why was there a picture of Paul McCartney in this?? 10:21
Yessss.. I was just searching for this comment😂
