London Transport 1991-Routemasters at Hither Green Station, Lewisham Station & Camberwell Green

- It's April 1991 and we see some Routemaster bus action in South East London. We start at Hither Green Station with shots of route 36 before moving on to Lewisham for routes 36 & 36B. This is how Lewisham used to look, it has been re-built twice since (compare it to this recent upload of mine • London Buses 2021-Lewi... )..... Soi this is just magical, the sounds, the sights, this is London as was meant to be, not the cesspit we have now
With grandparents that lived in Downham and Lewisham, and having lived in Herne Hill & Brixton, this Exile - trapped in Wales - has a tear in his eye. Seeing the street scenes bought back a lot of happy memories. I wish I could travel all those miles again on RMs.
I used to drive these in the late 70's early 80's. The routes then were: 36 Hither Green to Victoria, 36B Grove Park to West Kilburn (renamed Queens Park Station), 36A (rush hours only) Brockley to Victoria, all out of Peckham garage. In the mid 80's the 36 went to Catford garage. (PM = Peckham garage, TL = Catford.
My first garage was Brixton, the manager's name was Butler. (Those of a certain age will get it.)
Brought back childhood memories, lived the other side of Hither Green Station and would often catch the 36 from its start point in Springbank Road and indeed the N82 when I started shift work. Great video
This has brought back childhood memories for me too. I was born and bred in Springbank Road although by the time this was filmed (1991) I had moved away. I can even see my old house that I used to live in

So many memories, I grew up in Peckham in the 70s/80s and used to get the 36 to Lewisham.

Absolutely fab footage of the good old days with the legendary RMs being hustled about but by proficient driverss
Driving standards certainly went down after the Chiswick Driving School was closed.......
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus I cannot remember but one incident of an RT shunting an RM at a bus stop in North End Central Croydon back in My skool days in the 70s...They were a better class of Drivers unlike some of today's dysfunctional terrorists masquerading as drivers!🤣

Is it me or has London become an absolute tip since this was filmed? Look how clean and well maintained the streets are. No graffiti. I thought it was just nostalgia but videos like this prove how the whole country is going downhill fast.

Not true only certain parts of central London has been gentrified while the outer boroughs have been trashed.
@billybellend1155 Only area I can think of that looks worse is croydon look at brixton, hackney, stratford and shepards bush now compared to the 90's don't let the nostalgia blind you
Nice vid! I had no idea the 36 used to go to Hither Green via Torridon Road! At 3:05 you even caught what looked like a 181 which is one of my locals. And nice to see what the even older Lewisham looked like lol.

Great film footage Camberwell Green in the early 90's.
This is among the best "handage" of yours yet, showing the Routemasters in their last full year before the real molestation began in earnest with re-engining and the dreaded modern interior lighting.
Nearly all still had their AEC 590s though a couple were sounding tired but still very nice like a sewing machine. Probably consuming oil by then though.
I detected at least one re-engined one 5:40.
The AEC engines had had a long life and couldn't be re-bored any more when being re-built (around every 2 & half years) plus Chiswick Works that carried out this work had closed. I seem to recall most engines on LT buses at this time had oil top ups each night on the run in, even the new Titans & Metros.....
Thanks for the vid , the RM family were my dads' favourite busses to drive, he drove them on the 53s out of NX , along with the MD

I was two years old in 1991, my family lived in Shooters Hill at the time and we used to shop in Woolwich and Lewisham, how those areas have changed in the last thirty years, and not for the better….
Same as much of London i'm afraid.......
Lewisham was a good place to live back then.london died at the end of the 90s,almost like a switch was thrown and old London was turned off over night.
I hope it happened after May of 99 as that's when I went. It seems like certain higher ups are determined to dissolve England's identity. It was good while the latter half of the 20th century lasted.
The UK elites seem to hate their country, fellow citizens and even their own existance! Rather tahn leave if it's so bad here they seem to want to the British to simply cease to exist......
I used to go to Lewisham a lot back in the 80s, especially to the "Our Price Records" in the shopping centre. I haven't been there since the 90s, has it really changed that much then?
They were beautiful. But, by this time they were very shabby. These still have their AEC engines. RM 832 sounds like a Leyland. Grew up with RT's and RMs. from AW garage, running on the 171A, 180/180A. 53 was also my local route and still is. Miss them very much along with RT's and RF's best bus London ever had.
Surprised to see the 36 doing the full length of the route here from Hither Green to Queen's Park. Most of the time it ran in overlapping sections. Hither Green/Lewisham to Paddington or New Cross Gate to Queen's Park.
I think the service pattern has varied over the years, i'm sure the 36B only went beyond Vic in the peaks at one time and of course the 36A was peaks only by the 1980s.....

The 36 group was high on the list for RM conversion. It commenced in February 1963 and the task was completed in April 1963, given that most of the RM buses when new to the 36/36A/36B were equipped with Leyland 0.600 engines replacing AEC RT buses. RMs were themselves dislodged by the Metropolitan MDs in 1976 but returned in 1980 why they bothered putting the Metropolitans on the 36 group in the first place?
LT were trying to find a way of replacing Routemastes and tried various modern doored buses but without much success. Barking was one of the garages to lose its RMs to reconvert the 36s. The 62s, the last RT route, had them for less than 2 years!
Incredible to think the AEC Routemaster was in regular service until 2005
No longer AEC. Foreign soulless modern rubbish as their hearts.
The last AEC engined one to run in service was RML 903 on route 390 that finished crew operation on Black Friday 3rd September 2004. This was the day when 3 Routemaster routes were converted to OPO at the same time (the 9s and 73s went as well) and around 100 Routemaster were withdrawn.....

When did the 36 operate in 2 overlapping sections? Must have been a year or 2 after this? Great to see when you could get across London on 1 bus!
I think the 2 over-lapping sections started after the 36B had been withdrawn. The south end to Grove Park became OPO Titan worked route 136 and the rest of the 36B merged with the main route 36.

If I was in charge at TFL I would change the 36 to the Borismaster and bring it back to Lewisham. 36 Borismaster Lewisham to Paddington. Send another route to cover the Harrow road & Queen’s Park & get rid of 436.
Nostalgia
Those RMs are fondly remembered by most people, including me and it was good to see them in normal service again, although they looked a bit worse for wear.
After Aldenham & Chiswick Works had both closed they started to look very rough & ready, it was the 4 yearly over-hauls that kept them running for so long.....

Yes, the correct engine to make it complete. I have come around to Leyland 0600 engined examples as they sounded superb (like a sportier 590), they came like that from factory and LT traditionally had Leyland RTL variant so as not to be 100% one brand -wise move.

I miss those buses,back then it was 5p to get on the 36 to new cross gate 🥰
