Micro Crayfish - Jigged Nymph and streamer - McFly Angler crawfish Fly Tying Tutorial

- Опубліковано 14 сер 2024
- I just moved to South Texas and small crayfish patterns tend to work very well for smallmouth bass, Guadalupe bass, panfish and the Rio Ciclids. They also work for other fish like catfish and trout as well. So I decided to come up with my own small crawdad pattern. Now, I am sure someone has tied something similar to this in the past, maybe even exact. If you know of a fly that is similar or exact that has already been tied, please let me know. Pretty much everything under the sun has been tied before, and someone always seems to lay claim to a pattern. In fact I will regularly have multiple people lay claim to the same fly every time I make a video. But, either way, I thought this combination of materials and way to put them onto a hook was something that would work for this area. So I made it. LOL
Ok so, with that aside. This fly will be able to be fished like a nymph, but also like a crayfish streamer as well. I mean, you could float it under an indicator, or put it on as the sole fly, and site cast to fish. Bounce it off the bottom, or swim it right by them. I do think this fly is very versatile in the way you can fish it. You tell me what your experience with it is.
Also like always, I am listing all the materials here, with links to where you can buy them. If you want to check out the Risen hooks and their other materials, then go to www.risenfly.com. Whatever you purchase there, you can get a discount by typing in "McFly" at checkout. Enjoy!

Great video, love all the little tips and details about certain steps that helps out amateurs like me a lot, love the unique look of this fly I’ll definitely give it a try for some bass and trout
Thanks! Tell me how it works for you
Looks like a great Small Mouth Pattern. I have bunch of these Risen hooks and love them. Ryan at Risen is great to deal with (and local to me). Thanks for the fly idea.
Hey thanks, let me know how it works for you. Yeah risen has some awesome stuff, and your right, Ryan is awesome for sure! I wish I was close by. Haha!
Awesome work! San Antonio I see on the locator. Lived there for many years. Also lived in New Braunfels. I miss the old NB. Many great day's fishing. Keep up the work and I'll definitely support your work and channel!
Hey thanks! Yeah I moved to SA just a few months ago, about 8 months or so. Hey thanks for supporting! Anything helps! :).
Very nice fly. It’s a killer fly bound to be irresistible. Bass won’t be able to resist it. Well done. Best regards, Richard
Thanks
Great cray Shawn. I really should be fishing this type of fly more often. I see lots of them in the creeks when i wade. Cheers
Thanks man! For sure, tons of small crayfish, and they are a juicy snack for a wide range of fish species. Let me know how it works for you
Been waiting for this vid since you posted the picture. Thanks and keep up the great tying 🍻
Thanks! So, after seeing the video, is it all you hoped for? Haha!
I really like the weight you added to this pattern. I bet you could fish this up and down the gravel bottom at Six Lakes where you were hammering the trout in those high winds. I never tried a craw pattern there but in the Spring there are lots of little 🦞 crawfish in the rocks along the dam. Should work great! Thanks for the cool video. I really enjoy watching you tie flies.
Thanks! Glad you liked it. As soon as the government lets me sell flies maybe I can get some off to you to try out there.
McFly Angler No hurry Shawn. How’s that go? I’m from the government and I’m here to help.
Lol! Here to help make my life miserable... haha. Yeah still waiting
Well I can't say it looks like a crayfish to me, but that doesn't mean I don't think it will catch fish. I think it will. Keep the good stuff coming.
Thanks! So really? You don’t think it looks like a crayfish? I thought it was pretty close. I mean, it’s definitely not a lifelike replica, but many flies are more suggestive than exact. Anyway, hope all is good with you man. Glad you liked it! :).
McFly Angler A successful fly is one that looks like food to the fish. And that fly looks like fish food to me!
Shawn that's a cool looking "mud bug" :o) I like veiled orange dub ball under the hackles. That'll catch some fish. Glad to hear you're recovering, thanks and have a blessed holiday!
Thanks joe! How r things with you?
@@McFlyAngler Wet and cold but I just keep on keeping on! ;o) Thanks bro!
Been raining and snowing back there?
yeah, relatively warm for a time then rain, freezing rain, sleet, then snow, then in the 20s at night. Then it gets sunny, snow melts and the process starts again. I guess it's winter, lol. Actually we've been lucky, only one storm of about 8 inches that I had to snow blow. Did I read in the comments once that you've spent time in the Adirondacks? You still hunt?
Not sure where that is Joe, but I don’t actively hunt no. I mean, it’s not something I do regularly because I don’t always get the chance, but I do enjoy hunting yes. Just recently moved to Texas, so gotta figure out the hunting situations here, also, it’s been super warm, I kinda miss actual winter! Haha!
Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous
Thank you
Love the pattern. Thank you for sharing!
Hey glad you like it!
Awesome! This is a great fly for bass!
Thanks!
Love the buggy mini cray!
Thanks
Great fly! Looks like I will be tying some of these in the near future! Looks like it will work great for carp at the dsp!
Thanks man! Yeah let me know how it does for you.
Dude, this in an olive/pumkinseed would be killer in the Ozarks!
Well very possible to tie it in that color no question
Good tying!💪💪💪👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks
Thanks for the post great fly Kudos
Thanks
The new one was so good
New one?
I'll have to get the rest of the materials for this fly, it looks like it would be hell on my local smallmouth population
Let me know how you do with it. I listed links in the description section for all the materials. Hope it helps.
@@McFlyAngler it will be may before I do, they already moved out of my somewhat secret spot for the year. I fish a creek that's right down the road from my house they migrate down stream the first week of October to the lake it feeds into and dont return until the second week of may, you can almost set your watch by it. Thanks Bud
AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING!!!
Thanks!
Man that looks incredible! Silly question: Is that tungsten bead heavy enough to fish like a normal jig with spinning gear, or would this be more of a fly rod only fly?
Well probably not, but maybe... I’d say go with a larger hook, and larger bead, then put extra wraps of lead also behind the bead, then it could work yeah.
I dub with a shinney orange and use both fox and grey squirrel tail for the Winged
Cool! Sounds like that’s a great pattern as well
Nice!💪🎣
Thanks
Good carp fly, too.
Thanks, yeah for sure, carp I think will like this.
Can you use Hungarian Partridge in place of the hen hackle?
Sure, it will be a little shorter though in general, which might be good. I also find they are more stiff, so yeah, give it a go, see how it works for ya.
This would be such a killer carp pattern.......
I’ve actually tried it here for carp, and along with every single fly I’ve ever tried out this way, I can’t catch even a look. Seems like the carp here don’t eat!? Lol. I’d be interested to hear how it does for you. Please let me know.
@@McFlyAngler I will. Living in New England, NOW is the time to find oneself just below a dam throwing woolly buggers, or this little creation of yours. Carp do go for flies. They're also these cunning, sneaky little (big) pains in asses whose first habit is simply not taking what you've got to offer...
I’ve caught them before, many times. Just not where I moved to a year ago. Here in Texas they are really tough to catch. Haven’t been able to figure them out yet
Looks similar to the carp crack and Rio better patterns I use here in the Midwest. This type of nymph has even enticed Brown trout
Never heard of a rio better, but I have heard of a Rio getter, I’m sure that’s whatcha meant? Yeah I tied the Rio getter a while back on video. I guess similar, not exactly though. Definately similar style fly for sure.
@@McFlyAngler lol yeah caught my typo.
Haha! Actually probably autocorrects typo... Siri tends to think she knows better too often! Lol! Anyway, go check out my tying video for the Rio getter, it’s a decent fly for sure! Slightly easier to tie than this also, but I think personally this will work a little better for more stubborn fish.
Can you put the list of materials you use thank you
I think I did. Check the description section
was the bead nickel color any info would be great thanks Mark
Link and info in the description section.. yes, black nickel. But you can use whatever you want
thanks for the reply
👍
Trying this with some dark green
Sounds good. Should work well
So it’s basically like a salt water crab pattern just smaller 🤔 interesting ....
Sorta.... I think a lot of flies are similar for sure. Anyway, give it a try.
which species have you caught on this pattern?
None yet, haven’t fished it... been recovering from surgery. Sent a couple to a friend who got some smallmouth and panfish
Where do you get your materials so cheap?
I pay the same as you. Lol!
For hooks and beads I buy from risen. They have good quality at a good price. They also some other materials also. You get my same discount of 15% if you type in the code McFly at checkout
