- Today we are going to try the new KVD True Portrait foundation, and see how it looks after 10 hours!
I was genuinely curious about this foundation when I first saw the marketing images for it. Like most purchases these days, I did a little pros vs cons in my head to decide whether to get it or not.
There are several reasons why I've been less interested in kvd products lately (feel free to research this on your own and form your own opinion)
But alas, some of my most viewed videos are reviews of kvd products.. plus there are hardly ANY reviews on this stuff so...i bought it and i'm gonna review it. bada bing. lol ok let's get into it.

Yes Alice you need to have your own makeup brand so I can buy it.
I tried it two days ago and I really liked it. But I used it completely different from you. I applied it with my fingers and then finished with KVD base brush (that's what they advise, not use a sponge) and used less amount. It covered my pores and unify the tone without covering my skin which is what I like in a foundation. It didn't sink into my lines and felt light but hidrated. I only sealed my nose (and in a couple of hours was oily, but that's its normal state). I suppose it depends on what you look on your foundation. If you want coverage, this won't work because clearly using the amount you have used it doesn't work well (the brand advises to use only a drop or a couple, as a little goes a long way, and if you look at the videos from the artistry collective, they use only a little). When Leah Carmichael uses it, you see all her freckles still and that's the effect I like most and to do that, it works really well. My pores dissappeared, but you could still see my freckles. It was my skin at its best. But if you have something you want to cover or you want high coverage simply because you like it, I don't think you can achieve it with this...
I agree, I would also use it like that and also not get a shade too light as it isnt pretty on reddish toned skin 🤷🏻♀️

Because of the liquid to powder transformation it’s not really buildable. I’ve learned you have to move fast with it. Also I recommend exfoliating and moisturizing heavily with this one. Also i use that same shade and it oxidizes like half a shade which brought it to my real shade. I bronze with this one for sure.

It looks like how I sadly expected it to look, her lock it foundation looked like shit on my skin as much as I really wanted to love it because the packaging was amazing. Lock it made my skin look SO dry and cakey it was disgusting and when I saw that this foundation was going to be matte too I was bummed. I really hoped it was going to be a dewy or at least natural finish foundation :(

It looked as if it had immediately begun to crease right after you put it on? I’ve tried the old foundation when I had oily skin, absolutely hated it. I’m going to stay away from this one especially now that I have dryer skin. It’s a shame, I love their aesthetic but it seems like the quality of their products are not worth the price to me personally since I’m a drugstore queen and have dupes for everything lol

I don’t know why people have to judge other people for the products they use. Yes there are somethings Kat Von D does that I don’t agree with but she make a bomb brow product and I love her packaging also lol

I really love the eye makeup here👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 i hear kvd and i just smh and think what a damn shame just the potential there plateaued seeing it as her and the brand kinda seperate but still together is how i try to think abt it too. But in any case im bummed for you that the foundation didnt work out. You looked real disappointed at the end

With this foundation its not recommended to use a beauty blender/sponge because it's a water based product and sponge will soak all the product especially if you wet the sponge!! You also don't need a primer unless you have very dry skin, if you do, use the lock it hydrating primer and only spot cover, dont use it all over your face. You also don't need setting powder for this , it self sets to an airy matte finish and you don't necessarily need a concealer. Just treat it as water color paint, set a sheer layer first , let it dry then layer. This is made to be very easy for people on the go! Sorry you had a bad experience but please give it another chance because I had a very good experience with it.

@@hatsunemisty i am aware that it contains silicone. The silicon is what helps make the foundation glide on smoothly. What I mean by water based is that its a moe liquidy formula than the previous lock it foundation.
You got the wrong shade of foundation it is to light.And foundation is supposed to be applied first before eye makeup.Watch Jeffrey Star apply makup the rite way smdh this video is not worth watching except for a good what not to do video.
Nope people can do makeup in whichever order works best for them. I did my face makeup after eyes to avoid fallout getting on the foundation. FYI ✌🏻
I just got this yesterday (same shade haha), and even though it’s liquid to powder and suppose to be matte, if your skincare base is good (it pairs so well with the Farsali liquid glass primer) you’re set. It sits so well. It’s not clinging to dry patches. And it looks like a natural glow from within. Like healthy af skin. Not cakey.
I want to punch KVD for some of her crap, but this is a good product.
Also. The product says not to use with a sponge. Actually says use fingers. I just used a dense flat domed brush. Works great that way.

I actually really love this foundation. For me its my favorite foundation and I find it very innovative. A little goes a long way and it has to be applied with fingers or a brush.
My thoughts : I really wanted to like this foundation but I am really disappointed. The liquid to powder formula is really cool but the foundation is patchy and it doesn't stay long on the face. It's not long lasting and it rubs off easily with everything I come in contact with. The coverage is a little too sheer. I wanted" a no makeup look" without the cakey and thick foundation but that amount of coverage is not acceptable. it's really expensive and for that price tag, I expect a lot more than that. Her brand is going downhill. She has already lost so many fans and supporters and now she released something like that? I am really very very disappointed.
It clearly states on instructions to be applied with fingers for best results....this type of foundation is not designed or meant to be used with a sponge; that it is why it is soaking up your entire product. If you use it as described on the packaging you probably only need one drop of foundation
I personally have no real opinion of Kat von D as an individual; how could I, since I've never even met her...? That said, I do really like the brands aesthetic, most of the products have worked well for me, are easily accessible, and at a fair pricepoint, so I'll continue to buy. I am curious about this formula, although I do wish she would do a foundation for drier skin...
yeah i can't imagine this foundation being anything but horrible for dry skin...
@@AlicexLockhart I was under the impression it was supposed to be a cream-to-powder formula...? I do really prefer powder foundation in Summer, since I wear heavier sunscreen, but sometimes it can still look too dry. Your review really has me wanting to try a sample... Maybe using it over concealer, and without a powder...?
xamyx definitely get a sample! Kevyn Aucoin Balm Foundation has a similar powdery light texture but MUCH better imo
The Lock-It foundation isn't a matte finish at all, rather dewy in my opinion, I find it to be quite moisturizing , on drier clients I use the hydrating primer with it also.
@@Kaya0Anna As someone with dry skin, I don't find it "dewy", at all... Also, I've heard some of the paler shades tend to be drier, particularly L42, which is the one I tried. Granted, when used with the primer, it is alot better, but I don't always want to use them together, as it doesn't work well with sunscreen.
I really get SO annoyed by people "REVIEWING" foundations or concealers and they do what THEY WANT TO DO and NOT follow the directions that is for that specific makeup... its like WAIT!! Fake freckles in my personal opinion are looking fucking awesome totally dig them, I need another look with them again please and tutorial on how! The foundation on the other hand NOT digging that it's a big oh hell fuck NO, but thank you for the review I appreciate that.

Unpopular opinion- I like and use Kat Von D and Lime Crime. I don’t get how some people will attack both brands when there’s others out there that have done pretty crappy things as well.

i had a similar issue with it, but it was the "powder" aspect.
it was as if it wouldnt set down or dry and it stayed oily but with no coverage. i gave up on it and now use it as a mixer
I feel you. It looked super dry. And I admit, when I have the same problem with a foundation, I always worry if it would look less shitty if I got it in a darker shade, but we all know that is not true. A foundation should always make you look flawless, regardless of the shade :P and i love the freckles on you!
I hated this. I actually returned it as the in store sales person suggested I get it. It went dry and cakey and patchy for me too.

Kat Von D kind of has this whole feel for me. I bought their liquid lipstick Vampira before I went to a concert and the lipstick dried my lips really bad. It also flaked off my lips and just looked bad after the concert was over. Thanks for the video. I was curious about this foundation despite my bad experiences with the brand.

I love this foundation. I use very little and blend with my fingers but it is light coverage. This is my everyday foundation not my full glam one. I wore it for 13 hours Saturday working a NFL football game and it held up great!

Update: I will say I tried this foundation this morning with just moisturizer first and then applied with a damp sponge. It turned out much better .. actually beautiful! and somehow improved throughout the day? ... it’s so weird... but at least there is some hope for it! Lol
I think it came off like that because its supposed to have a powder finish? Maybe the wet sponge lifted the semi dry foundation?

I'm the type of person who can't buy a brand if I don't support the brand owner. But that's just me.
Then maybe you should think twice about what you buy. Kat von D is the face and mostly designer, but not the owner, of Kat von D Beauty, the same way that Rihanna is not the owner of Fenty Beauty. In fact, if you don't like the owner of Kat von D Beauty, you should think about stoping buying anything from Marc Jacobs, Fenty and Bite. All of them are a property of Kendo group. Kat, Rihanna and Marc might direct (or not, I think the are more like creative directors) their respective branches, but they don't own them. The only famous person that really owns his brand is Jeffree Star. In fact, the same Jeffree explained that when they were friends, Kat named an Everlasting liquid lipstick Jeffree (a bubblegum pink, typical of Jeffree) and when they fall apart, she said she was going to remove it from her line... And she couldn't do it inmediately, because it was a very well sold lipstick and she wasn't allowed to remove it. Three or four years after that, the lipstick was still being sold (in the end it was eventually removed or change its name, but she couldn't do it inmediately because she doesn't own the brand and she had to follow the orders of the real owners).
Many people has the opinion that the downfall that the brand has had is because the owners decided to dedicate more resources to Fenty and retire from KVD. I don't know if it's really true, but since Fenty was launched, KVD's quality doesn't seem to be the same...
@@Morwen1978 thanks for clearing that up. What I mean by me not supporting is that she also makes money off that brand. I don't spend my money by personal choice to support brands like fenty, Kat von d or Kylie cosmetics. It's just a personal preference for me. I do admit that they are gorgeous products just not something I can get myself to buy.
@@surrealYUME yeah, I totally respect that, of course 😉 I only think that if we really knew who really owns the brands, in many cases we would be very surprised... But in any case, in the head of many beauty brands seem to be very dislikable people, I don't know why... Beauty seems to attract them, and I think Kat is not even one of the worsts...

What I heard from this foundation (from an official post and demonstration), is that is a medium coverage product! And is not recomended to apply with sponge, better a brush. Maybe that took out the product and made you confused, so you applied a lot more in the second try.
I think I’m about your shade and I tested that 006 yesterday? Good god. Way too light. But 008 was way too dark? I shouldn’t have been surprised. The shade range for lock it was such a nightmare too
I could see trying her make-up if you got it free in PR but with all the 100x better brands out there why would anyone biy her crap? Sorry but the only make-up that's good not great by her are her lip kits and I wouldn't buy them either 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Sorry you had such a bad experience with Kat Von D's foundation. I would suggest to get your money back if you can, and not to buy her products anymore. I don't think it would matter if you got a darker shade. It's just sad that her products now suck big time. I use to get her products too but I'm not getting anymore. Her attitude about not vaccinating and her husbands issues and I just don't think she cares anymore what her products are like anymore. She doesn't care how good they are she's just in for the money now.. You have had way better products in you that have done so much better. I'd stick with them. Again sorry you had a bad product.

Lol I bought this and followed instructions and damn. It literally fills and accumulates in every crease in my face. I have an expressive face so my forehead and smile lines make me look 30 years older wearing this. Wtf. 1/5 stars

FYI Comment Section: It's a liquid to powder foundation so when if you wet the sponge to blend it out, of course it will pick up the foundation :) It's a light to medium (build-able to a point) coverage, as there's already a full one and alot of her customer base have asked for a lighter foundation. You have to find the right application technique for your skin, like with any product what works for one person won't work for another. I'm super oily, and I've not used a powder at all with this foundation, I haven't needed to even touch up anything throughout the day. For people of drier skin types, you know your prep work helps the way foundations look. The social media community in general have gotten so used to full coverage being the norm they find it hard to step back when reviewing foundations I find, as for the comment regarding bringing out a concealer and powder range to go with, I wouldn't fix what ain't broken. I haven't even used any concealer or powder with this, been wearing it for two weeks since it came out. Get samples people have a try. Then at least you don't waste money. :) I still need to buy that brush Alice, I remember what you did with the oil and the Lock It and I need to try it ASAP. Look mint!

I know if I get a foundation that’s too light on me it looks chalky and it just doesn’t look right. Like when I bought the new urban decay foundation I bought two light of a shade and I didn’t really like the way it looked so I went up a shade and I love it

It works best when used with the fingers and brushes and only a tiny amount at a time. Then it's amazing!

I haven’t gotten a chance to play with this foundation yet but I’ve heard it’s best applied with the hands and pressed into the skin. It’s a true medium coverage so it’s definitely not going to give you full coverage like most foundations. I’m curious to see how it does on my dry skin. I’ve never been able to pull off Lock-It other than for costume makeup. Love watching your reviews! I feel like they’re realistic and you approach them like a true consumer would.
I read that too and tried w/ my hands the following day. There were some streaks so I tried smoothing out with a sponge and it just sucked it right up. Gone. Like.. idk 😐

Is it lighter then the tattoo foundation on the skin? Most foundations feel like cake frosting on my skin.
This one felt very lightweight on my skin but in my opinion it looked cakey
