Its not better. This is the worst way to rig one i have ever seen. You can skip the gill and just put the hook in the back. Use a circle hook if you thing theres too much hook…. Think of it like putting fish on a stringer. You put something through the gills, fish is dead. Dead bait isnt good at catching fish
I use the size 1 and 1/0 Mustad hooks to freeline for snook ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 and they have been fantastic. The points are super sharp, and the hook is small enough to blend with my baitfish, yet large enough to land fish 30" or more. I also use these hooks when I'm pier or surf fishing with my kids. They tend to catch tons of smaller snapper, whiting, and catfish, and we get far fewer gut hooks with these Mustad in-lines, which means more of them survive after release. I was actually using these hooks when I caught my friend too, but I think that had more to do with the bait I was using ;-)
The main thing is if u got big bluegill on u they can’t peck him off the hook. Like when u just hook them thru the head they either gotta take it or they can’t get it or peck it off this is a great way to target what ur after or u will get sownrhing decent sized of any species

I usually just go through the top halfway back since I found that they like to strike upward and head first. The minnow looks natural and the line goes straight up. The fish can feel the line if it is rigged forward.
a good point was how good this works when sunnies are around. They'll pick at it and knock it off if its just dangling before the slabs have a chance! Great setup and you'll probably catch a few off one minnow!

I hook my greenbacks just behind the peck fin. Bait stays alive until something smacks it as long as your mindful to not hit it's vitals. Makes the bait flutter which gets your target fish attention and it makes the bait stick out from the other bait around

And if you want to catch more crappie and bigger. Crappie use what they call a keystone minnow it's artificial.ive caught over 50 fish on each one, thay are almost impossible to destory.

I actually think the same way, there are others ways to fish, you know if this were a survival situation, then, I think it's totally justified. Unless you're a person that really lives of fishing I think that's a very inhumane way of fishing, it's not about fishing the animal, is about fishing with the animal alive and putting it through a lot of pain and horror. Studies indicates that all the living beens have a way of awareness. It's nothing against the fishing activity by the way, because I love fishing too.

Even though that for sure there are others ways to do it, with less pain. It is a great method. I use it all the time! Richard, if you slightly squeeze their stomach they will open their mouth until you are done.

I've been hooking them from the bottom of the mouth up through the nose for years and it's working just fine for me.
They can’t fully breathe, they need to open mouth to open gills (at least for minnows I use)
