So many people didn't even know they had a Patreon, which goes to show that they didn't promote it well. If they plugged it more often and added more content there, they could have easily made up whatever perceived monetary pitfalls they're dealing with.

They were Buzzfeed darlings. They left BF to be more in control of their own content, which is commendable. But… I don’t think their Watcher content has been as cohesive. I feel like they’ve been chasing the Buzzfeed glory they thought that had ever since they left.

This is such an important observation to make. They're not nearly established enough and their content seems rather muddled and lacking a niche.

as a huge watcher fan I can confirm steven is mid.

The worst part of this is one of the series they make is "dish granted". They buy expensive products and test them. Yeah I don't want to fund that.
The best content they made was the low budget shows when they first started.
This is going to get spicy really quick as they have a live show coming up on Tuesday in Glasgow 😬😬😬😬

I'm so sorry. That sucks! I feel like this is the case for many creators as well. The moment they get big and up their production, they start to lose the authenticity that endeared their audience to them in the first place.

Steven is out there driving a Tesla, hanging out with hollywood actors, and eating literal actual GOLD, and has the GALL to be like "um... we need your money sweaty :) how else am i supposed to afford my gold plated caviar?" like fuck OFF, nobody even watches Steven's stuff. Like, there's been the odd one here and there that's been good, but the vast, VAST majority of Watcher fans are there for Ghost Files, Puppet History, and Unsolved or whatever they call it now. That's literally it. We were happy when it was just 2 dudes in a basement with a corkboard, and now they're telling us that we want higher quality content from them, even though they're already making that?? What happened to Shane "Eat the rich", "It's okay to do a little theft" Madej and who is this capitalist clone they replaced him with?

That is the EXACT vibe I'm getting even just from my brief exposure to their channel and their fandom. I don't understand why they would EVER feel the need to do all of this, other than just make more money. It's really sad.

I learned that they had a patreon because of your video lol. Agree with everything you're saying here.

I loved Ryan and Shane on Buzzfeed Unsolved. I love them on Watcher. I was always really confused about their collab with Steven Lim on their channel. He always felt like a weird fit. To be honest I just entirely skip over Steven's content, because I really have zero interest in watching him fly all over the world eating crazy expensive food when I can barely afford groceries. But whatever. At least there was still just Ryan and Shane shows. Which I love! Puppet History is amazing! And I like their new Mystery Files show. Their version of Unsolved is ok, but a little over done? If that makes sense? I preferred when it was just Ryan and Shane goofing off on goatman's bridge. Just hanging out, while also trying to prove if ghosts are real. And it never mattered if they actual found supernatural content. That wasn't the point. In any case, Watcher has a lot of really good content, mixed with a lot of not so great content. And part of this just screams Steven trying to say that his own expensive and unnecessary content will do so much better somewhere else, so let's go! The fact that Ryan and Shane are going along with this dumb decision is really disappointing. So no, I'm not paying their new streaming service to support Steven's lavish lifestyle.

You're definitely not the only one. Like I said, there was a lot of pushback against Steven's involvement in Watcher, especially during this last announcement.
I completely understand that. I feel like that happens once a lot of UA-camrs start to make a lot of money on their videos. They try to uplevel them and make them more "legit", but it loses all the authenticity of what made them special to begin with.

Dropout works so well and it’s insane to see Watcher try and mimic that success and fail so epically (Especially when we’re watching D20 grow in its production quality while still remaining affordable)

    • @happypancake234
      @happypancake234  Місяць тому

ABSOLUTELY. Dropout is a an incredibly intricate network of over 100 people. There's a lot that goes into it, but they're one of the most ethical business models I've seen.

But also the stats say they only need 3% of people to be on their service to become millionaires. No matter what someone will want to keep watching

God this’ll be long but I just need to vent.
Ya as a fan of these guys from their very beginnings at Buzzfeed this really really sucks. I’ve honestly watched nearly every video they’ve ever made, I’m a part of their patreon (lowest level is all I can afford but still), and I’ve even bought some of their overpriced merch over the years. Why? because I liked their content and I believed in supporting the little guys who were doing good work and making me laugh on the regular despite my depression in our capitalist society. But after this announcement I’m done. I canceled their patreon, I unsubscribed from their channel, and I will not be paying for a subscription from them. It’s more than just that they’re selling out, it’s finding out that these people who I had supported and believed in were not at all the people I thought they were. The entire video was intentionally made to be so manipulative that It makes me sick. I know I shouldn’t be as invested in the lives of people on the internet but that’s easier said than done. I feel taken advantage of and once again like the “good people” I supported and believed in all this time never really existed. While I wasn’t involved with the Try Guys community and while this isn’t as big of a deal as what happened with NF it almost feels like our communities version of it. Except for us we don’t have our own versions of Zach, Keith, and Ned on our side, agreeing with our frustrations and telling us that everything’s going to be alright. Watcher could still pull a 180 after seeing how universally upset the community is and abandon this streaming thing. But unless that announcement is made like THIS WEEK as well as them giving a massive apology and do some kind of gesture of goodwill to their fans it’s not going to work. But even if they did that I don’t think they would be able to regain the fanbase they once had or the trust/loyalty fans like me had in them. Either way it’s the end of an era. I just don’t see them recovering from this and it just really really sucks.

The staff of 25 bit is sending me over the edge... What the heck do these people do? What is this channel doing that requires more than 3 "hosts", 2 editors, 1 camera person, 1 sound, 1 artist, 2 writers and 1 HR? Like I feel like that is even generous; so many incredibly successful youtubers have an editor and brand manager and just go with the flow. Maybe they have accounting if their HR can't absorb that job, but considering how small this "company" is, it's hardly necessary. I see they are hiring people to do new shows, but it can't be what people actually want from this team. If you keep it small, you keep costs low.
Their Patreon alone equates to a salary of 100,000 for 6 employees OR 125,000 for 4 of them and 100,000 for another. And I doubt they are paying every employee that much lmao! If they actually have marketing, before these changes, they suck. Their Patreon could be even more profitable over time if they actually pushed it. But ads, which ARE worth watching for their present content, likely pay enough for production. If they cut down on employees they could stretch it further...
I finish my bachelor's in human resource and labour relations next week, and I am baffled. I keep running through all of the positions and task delegation they could possibly require for this channel. The only thing I can imagine is happening, is that Ryan and Shane have stepped back from any of the real work other than presenting videos researched and written from other staff.
Just editing to add that between rent for location, hosting a streaming service, paying for it to be designed and functional, having 25 employees, and investing in new productions... they jumped into a wildly expensive investment on something they didn't even survey first lmfao?

I completely agree! Like that is TOO MUCH. They all know how to shoot, edit, and upload from their time at Buzzfeed. Obviously they can't do everything, but I have a hard time believing you need this many people with this many varied skills for the content their making.
