But are tattoos really even "a great way to express yourself"? Why not write a poem, style your hair, practice a sport or an art or develop some talent, march in a parade ... in other words do something that actually reflects your interests and values, rather than just "wearing them on your sleeve"? Tattoos are really the laziest, and least interesting way of expressing yourself -- ever notice how 99.99999% of all tattoos feature the same 20-30 designs and themes? It's like people who are highly unoriginal, and highly narcissistic, want to "tell their story" to everyone that sees them, instead of doing the hard work of developing a strong character and letting THAT be communicated, little by little, by your choices and actions?
Your body is a temple. Tattoos are like graffitti scrawled across the outside wall. The ink bleeds into your lymph nodes over time -- fact -- reducing your immunity. And the ink fades. At age 50, everyone with a tattoo in a prominant place, or covered in tattoos, communicates exactly the same message: "When I was young I was vain and impulsive; now I look silly."

I have never saw a tattoo on a woman that made her more attractive than she already was. However, I have seen far too many randomly placed, stupid and nonsensical tatts that have forced me to conclude and assume that the wearer is a low IQ, low value person. To deface yourself, is to debase yourself. Just my two cents. There should be a bigger market for temporary tattoos that you can try before you buy and deciding to have them permanently etched to yourself.

I have had women who don't know what they want, only a tattoo and they change their mind from one design to the next. I find that worrisome and not far thinking. I encourage them, if they ARE going to get a tattoo it should have some meaning beyond the moment.

And, the thing is, tattoos are a sign of vanity. What they indicate in their wearers is a valuation of the physical over the mental. Oddly, it's also a trashing of the physical. They are making themselves ugly for the sake of VANITY! What a strange idea. Yet it is so.

Can you explain why tattoos have exploded in advertising? I don't mean the Mad Men, I mean the models in the ads. Are those tattoos done in Photoshop? Are brands trying to be trendy? I just don't get it. I thought models had to be relatable. Yesterday I saw an ad for underwear, the model had tattoos all over. How can I relate to that?

I remember once going for an interview with an agency. First it was a phone interview and then the person asked me to come in. When I did, the talk was about 2 minutes. All he wanted to do was see what I looked like. I was wearing a dark suit and tie. We chatted a bit afterwards and I asked him about the shortness of the interview and he confided in me the real reason. He was going to send me on an interview and I was going to reflect on HIM and his company. He said I just wanted to make sure that I didn't have piercings or tattoos. And he said this. NO ONE will ever come back and say, " You know, I liked your candidate, but I just wished his nose was pierced or he had a few tattoos. NEVER going to happen. I'm sure, that people judging people with tattoos is not as severe nowadays, as when I grew up. In the '60's & '70's, a tattoo meant, that you'd almost instantaneously cut your job prospects in half, & if & when you got a job, you'd never be promoted more than a notch or two up the ladder over a 40 year career, if you had a visible tattoo. ...Even people, who had tattoo, always advised kids to never get them.
In those days, if a woman had a tattoo, it meant, that they had worked as a drug addicted prostitute a some point in their life. There may have been an outside chance, that they'd worked in a circus freak show, but you just didn't see woman with them. I suppose, that some woman may have had some small descrete tattoo, that only their husband or doctor knew about. A girl couldn't even get a job as a stripper in a convention city, if they had a tattoo. ...Maybe at a strip joint down by the wharf.

I don't have to have those things permanently drawn into my skin. Looking back over the last 20 years and looking forward I can honestly say that having tattoos covering my arms and other visible parts of my body would have and still make me miss out on certain opportunities in my life. I totally agree with everything this man is saying. I have nothing against people who have tattoos but no thanks for me. Hey to all the young folks. She graduated third in her HS class, an elite private school. She received an academic scholarship to a top 30 school. She works for a fortune 100 company and her fiancée graduates this spring from Georgetown Law School. I asked her back then if she thought the CEO of a company, partner at a law firm or even the wife of one of these people would have tattoos. I pledged to pay for any tattoo upon her graduation from Graduate School. We recently spoke about this conversation now 7 years later. She thanked me for being a good and firm father.

When I was 20 I had a good job making good money in the steel mills. This was 1976 and most of the guys in the mills were tough guys, vets and outliers, so most had tattoos. One night after some heavy drinking my buddies and I went to a tattoo parlor. My buddies already had tattoos so getting another was not a big deal for them. Me I was afraid of needles but this night was liquored up enough to get not one but two. The artists had me pick out what I wanted, gave me paper copies and said to put them on my bathroom mirror for a month. If I still wanted ink he was my guy... Thanks to that very smart and kind artists I do not have any tattoos. My kids heard my story but hey for them it was the 90's and they began their tattoo journey, they "feel the need for ink" and of course it shows the world how crazy and wild they are... So I think one day the "uninked" will be the outliers and will be considered the coolest of the cool and the wildest of the wild.

I tried to walk the narrow road but only on the outside. I have many dark secrets that my outward appearance hides.
Likewise many tattoo'd individuals have the vice versa looking bad but being pure and good hearted on the inside. Many good people turn to various forms of self expression and or tormenting due to their sensitivities to the brutalities of the world.
I have heard of tattoos being very therapeutic for people especially war veterans and others who have suffered intense emotional pains. God bless and let's not judge others when we know that we are no better.

One of my ex's was covered in tattoos. She looked goth and cool when she was in her 20's but when she hit her mid 30's and her skin was stretching a bit after having a kid the tattoos looked comical. She would wear lots of clothes to cover them up and didn't want me to mention them even though they were everywhere. Her angst and regret caused such bad self-image that she started going through a second stage of life where she wanted younger guys to be interested in her and give her validation. She finally started sleeping with the younger guys and that's when the relationship ended. Her tattoos were a massive issue to her but she self-destructed blaming everyone else.

Yeah, that’s sad because no one can help them. I had a female college student who came to me with tattoo regret. She eventually got a second job and paid to get them laser removed. It cost her over $12k and it took 1.5 years. She is so much happier today but it cost her. The 1970s clean-healthy, beach-look is the new fad. The Taylor Swift look. Thank god, we have some young beautiful women again…and smarter.

I'm always trying to dissuade the 20 something female assistants in the office from getting inked up. Everytime I hear a tat convo, I pop up like a meerkat with the same words as this gentleman has so eloquently conveyed. My favorite response is "I'm expressing myself". I tell them " No , the tattoo ARTIST is expressing himself on you". You are no more expressing yours than I am by painting my living room a certain color or hanging a picture on the wall.. true expression comes from the things you create from the ground up. Hi… I’m 49 and I understand what you’re saying, yet I respectfully hold a slightly different opinion with regards to expressing myself. I had a beloved family member die by suicide in 2012, which affected me DEEPLY and in ways not many would (care to) understand. In 2014, on her birthday, I got my first (and so far, only) tattoo. It’s of a feather for its symbolism and just underneath is written the Portuguese word “Saudade”. So, for me, it IS a perfect personal expression, beyond that of the artist. Anyway, that’s the best way I can explain it I suppose. But I wish you (and all!) a blessed and happy new year!!!

Can you tell me what me getting a sick ass shark on my leg shows i want to demonstrate to other people? The only argument that people get tattoos to appease other people thats valid sort of is that tattoos are placed to face towards other people so they can read it, but the argument against that is that tattoos are placed that way because otherwise they would look dumb because they are upside down. Some how, Dad pointing out, that it didn't mean, that they were a bad person, was what did the trick. If he had said, that it meant, that they were a bad person, somehow, I don't know if it would have worked. ...I, nor any of my 4 brothers & 1 sister ever even thought of getting a tattoo. Maybe by saying, that it didn't mean, that they were a bad person, made us pity the person with the tattoo, rather than admiring them. Seems like others in my generation were told w similar thing. Maybe it was in "Dear Abby" in the newspaper? I don't imagine, that Dad came up with it on his own, but maybe he did?

This video really made me think, and I hope it does the same for you. Tattoos and other permanent body modifications can be a great way to express yourself, but like stated, they’re permanent. Just like freezing one version of you in time. And let’s face it, we all grow and change.
I knew someone in uni who got swept up in the tattoo craze. A few years later, her style and vibe had totally shifted, but the tattoos didn’t. It made me realize how much our tastes evolve, even when we don’t expect them to.

I once encountered a man at a store who had extensive face tattoos. When he walked in, I reflexively blinked, being surprised. It was a natural reaction, and not one of disgust or judgement. He walked by me, giving me a stern look that my gut instinct interpreted as; "Gotcha! You judged me! That makes me cool and morally superior to you, since you must be a prejudiced, old-fashion, uptight guy."
It is my opinion that some (Not all) who get extensive tattoos all over their bodies are either screaming for attention, or get a kick seeing old school people like me do a double-take, and then feel self-righteously persecuted because we don't accept them or applaud them. Can't win if I ignore them, can't win if I look at them for a moment to study their tattoos.
Maori warriors wore, and some do today, face tattoos for the sole purpose of frightening their enemies. They knew the psychological effect it has. I believe some (Again, not all, many are pretty chill folk) do such extreme tattoos for that same reason. So don't get a tattoo to compensate for your inferiority complex. If you do, don't judge people for being startled or staring. After all, that's the point of getting a tattoo in the first place, right?

The Maori facial tattoos certainly were scary and had a psychological effect. Because they were painful and difficult to get they had a rite of passage role too. They also showed your position and role within the tribe, warrior, fisherman, shaman etc. Some women also got tattoos once they were elders and had achieved senior status. After many years when they were out of favor, considered barbaric or unchristian they are making a comeback in New Zealand society. They are now considered traditional and conservative, if done correctly and with due regard to tribal custom.

Bang Bang thanks for the welcome, I wasn’t sure what year it was. FYI, not sure how familiar you are with laser removal, but I’ll clue you in since I have tried it: first (and more importantly) it doesn’t really remove them, unless they were done by an amateur at home with a sewing needle, which mine were not. If you have professional tattoos done with a tattoo gun and the types of ink used in most shops, those babies barely react to lasers. At best, they fade a bit, but you’ll never have totally clean skin again. Secondly, it is extraordinarily painful, and I say this as a person who has given birth and broken a bone, which is to say, I’ve experienced extreme pain and this ranks right up there. It’s not just pain in that instant either, it’s pain that lingers for days and the area can react and puff up with painful watery blisters since you are essentially burning the skin. Lastly, it’s very expensive. Each treatment can be hundreds of dollars and it takes many, many treatments to lighten the tattoos.
So, I hope that enlightens you, Bang Bang. You were kind enough to welcome me so now let me extend the favor: welcome to REALITY.

Emla cream is applied before the treatments to numb the skin and there are basically two types of lasers that target different colors, one of which leaves the skin in quite good shape and clears after just days. The Q switched ruby laser is the most common and together my tattoos are 99% gone and healthy skin with no scarring. In the UK where i lived for years, it was over half of young girls had tattoos (plural). On normally visible places. Now I am back in central (what you call eastern) Europe and Tattoo is considered something losers, criminals and drug addicts have. Not normal people. Yes, there is a tiny group of artists and soldiers as well, but those are just few individuals. It might have been considered edgy and cool in the 90's, but it fell out of fashion quickly. It is btw why Czech and Hungarian porn stars are so popular - many of them are natural, no silicone, no tattoos.
I wonder if that has something to do with - And I travelled a lot through the USA and Europe and it matches perfectly - with neomarxism (SJW trend). We do have SJW's here, but it is just a tiny fraction of what exists in the west. It is rare to see a person, who ha tattoos and has right wing ideas (libertarianism, small government, low taxes), and it is hard to find a SJW without tattoos.
    Just a thought.
I believe in freedom of choice and I couldn't care less what you do with your skin, but unless a person is a member of a tribe, unit, brotherhood (sisterhood), needs to cower a nasty scar or has an important message to tell people (A-, allergy to penicillin), I consider said person an idiot. No, you are not edgy, if you have a "fried rice" Chinese character on your shoulder, barbed wire around your arm or a dolphin on your ankle. I do not see a rebel, I do not see an individual, I see an idiot, serial number 482649572.

SJW is short for "social justice warrior", someone, who takes neo-marxists ideas to modern issues, someone, who sees the society as a class struggle. Although a class now is not only "proletariate" or "bourgeoisie", but it is defined by various standards, sex, sexual orientation, skin colour, religion etc. SJW believes that there is a struggle between a group that holds power and a group that is oppressed. No middle ground. Whatever bad happens to women (they make on average less than men) is caused by patriarchy, evil society dominated by men (and not by the fact that women raise babies and thus stay at home for several years during their lives).
An SJW has usually a very clear ladder of oppression, where the worst opressor is a combination of certain characteristics (white heterosexual non-trans male, either christian or atheist, with no disabilities and from non-immigrant background). Changing any of the characteristics "earns" you points on something that is by evil people like us called "the oppression olympics" - according to wiki: Oppression Olympics is a term used to describe verbal banter between allegedly marginalized groups, who are trying to determine the weight of their overall oppression, often by comparing race, gender, socioeconomic status or disabilities, in order to determine who is the worst off, and the most oppressed.

When my son was a teenager in high school, all his friends had tattoos. He was so mad that we told him NO. We said when you're finished with high school and on your own, you can do whatever you want. He never did it and to this day he thanks us for telling him no. He's now 41and still glad we said no.

My niece saved me. Just at the time when tattoos were going mainstream I bought some tattoo magazines and was heart set on getting a tribal band round the top of my biceps. I had as good as booked the appointment at the tattooist when I happened to mention it to my neice.
"Urgh!" she said. "Don't do that - _everyones_ getting those!"
And I thought yeah! She's right. So I dropped the idea and now some 30 years later I am immensely grateful of her chance remark.

My niece wanted to a tattoo. She is in her 2nd year of college. My sister called me up frustrated beyond sanity. She and her husband had gone round and round with their daughter (my niece) trying to persuade her not to get a tattoo. I said I'll give it a shot since I am favorite uncle. I called her her and we talked for awhile. We went over all the pluses and minuses of getting a tattoo. She told me how she designed it and was looking forward to getting it on the back of her neck (palm slap to forehead). She told me that she loved me and respected me but please do not try to talk her out this....so I said this: "It is your body, you can do whatever you want with it. If you want to get some ink, that's your business. But! Do not be one of these people with a long story behind your tattoo, what it means or its significance etc....because nobody gives a shit about dolphins jumping through rainbows or whatever and if they do they probably just want something...other than your tattoo story." I then told her I would pay to have it put on with henna and keep it updated for a year, if she absolutely had to see how it feels. After that year if she still wants a tattoo...I'd split the cost. She called me 3 days later and said she didn't need one....it all clicked, she then said they are kind of dumb!

Both my kids got tattoos before me (in their early 20’s) my husband who is a retired firefighter has zero tattoos and honestly isn’t fond of them. I myself love art in many different forms and I am anxiously waiting to get tattoo #2. As far as society judging anyone for a sleeve or a tattoo here and there is such a ridiculous notion these days, I would not walk away from a doctor with a sleeve as a matter of fact I would probably think “what a cool guy”, he’s not wrapped up in what society thinks. ✌️
