What a trip down memory lane! For those motivated to give these brackets a try, there are almost 300 various types of Stroboframe brackets listed on ebay at the moment. A cursory peruse turned up some REAL bargains. Hope Santa was good to you, John.
Never fret about being old school I’ve learned more from old old school photographers in film and digital than most of the gear review influencers! That said I think I need one of these….. thanks! My biggest problem with model photography is a lack of studio/location… I get by with natural light but something like this will help me experiment with flash more (with a ttl cable from my a99 or Minolta film camera to a hs 5600d)
OMG brings back my wedding shoot memories. I started with a stroboframe but moved up to a pro media gear set-up which was phenomenal for this style of shooting. Great for the reception and event photography. I never used it for single model sessions... Fun memories
Film days events: I had one of these, but more often used a Sunpak 566? handlebar AND a Vivitar 285 on the hotshoe. Rarely used either in direct flash mode. With that much power available and both swiveling / elevating, I could usually bounce off walls and ceilings and get a good studio look. I also have one like this where the cold shoe extends about 1.5 feet so I can get more off camera while still carrying. You worried about weight? I usually had a full motor drive with 8 AAs AND a Tamron 60-300 on the rig. With another body and a 28-70 "spare". (Back then I could actually handle that....)
That bracket is obviously still relevant today! I sometimes use a bracket that brings the flash closer to the lens. I tried using a Godox flash on the bracket with a remote, but the flash and remote are too close together for it to work. I instead use a nikon flash with a cable. Good video and a beautiful model! 🇨🇦
I had a Metz hammerhead back in the day, same idea but the battery was the size of a motorcycle battery, wore over the shoulder, then the sinc cord. great for snagging everything.
You learn something everyday thanks, I have one of those from my film camera days was going to sell it with all my film cameras maybe I'll keep it now.
Dad had one bracket similar to this back in the film days. We used to see it a bit daft when we’re kids and saw him using it. I’m a fan now. Funny how we become our dads when we get older. In defense to Godox, ttl works great on Nikon. Never had any issues apart that it won’t go faster sync than 1/200 on the new Z system where I used to go up to 1/320s on the old D810.
@cosmo0080 Mine is almost 60 years old! I'm sure it's still in one of my boxes of good junk* somewhere. The camera I had didn't have a shoe, hot, cold, or lukewarm, but did have two PC sockets for electronic or fire in a bottle flashes. It actually held the flash out to the side and above the camera, which made for some interesting shadows. I found another one when we cleared out my late cousin's camera gear, plus a hot shoe standoff for his old Olympus film camera that lifts the flash another 10 cm or so above the camera to help avoid red-eye. * Good junk = stuff you keep as it might be useful some day; bad junk = stuff you should biff...
Great video....I loved my stroboframe back in the olden days. Regret throwing it away 😪 Maybe I should buy it back. And you're right about Godox TTL, it SUCKS big time. My Lux Master and AD300's TTL mode is so unreliable compared to the Profoto A2 and B10.
I have used this type of bracket for decades…..I suggest if no one has ever used it then you must give it a go……no more nasty shadows when shooting vertical!!
just out of curiosity, does the bracket allow for enough vertical room to use the Roundflash collapsible beauty dish or is the beauty dish too big and will cover your lens?
Great images. Great model. Great teacher. Great video.
Many thanks!
Brought back so any memories ...:)..made me smile..Thanks for sharing John.
Glad you enjoyed it! Love some of our old gear- we forget how good some of it is.

There are a lot on eBay. I want to give a few more a try. Love these

I got one of those amazon brackets years ago and I love it. Nothing better than inexpensive and simple products that just work!
It does work - and $12 works too 😂
I’ve been using this setup for all my event photography. I love it
It really is the best.

I think I’ll be trying the Pro Media Gear one next. Seems like a very solid option

I was brought up on the 500cm and a full Lumedyne flash system. I know weight. 😂😂

For the Godox, set the the distance in the menu for it to work at close distance.
@@kaskoPhoto Yes, I've tried that... doesn't seem to work!
Stroboframe still have one from my wedding days .
They make a great product.
I had a Metz hammerhead back in the day, same idea but the battery was the size of a motorcycle battery, wore over the shoulder,
then the sinc cord. great for snagging everything.
It was the Lumedyne for me.
8:27 exactly. Same for Westcott. I love my Westcott strobes; but the FJ200s and FJ80IIs really struggle with Sony TTL. It's truly a shame.
Yet a lot of the 3rd party flashes do very well with Nikon.
C220s/330s with a Metz potato masher on top of the bracket--people used to tease about the "periscope" look, but loved the images . . .
Love hearing about all the older gear. Brings back memories
I did the same
You learn something everyday thanks, I have one of those from my film camera days was going to sell it with all my film cameras maybe I'll keep it now.
I think it’s worth keeping - you may love it again.

Thanks for sharing. Many do have good luck with it on Nikons. I hope the new V100 has some tweaks to make it work better on Sony as well
I continue to use my two stroboframe brackets from the 1980s. I've had to replace the foam " handle bar" grips sevaral times over the years.
I’m going to try one of the newer high end brackets next just to see if they are any better than our old ones
I still use one. Really Right stuff makes a nice one. 😊
I didn’t realize they made one, I will definitely check it out. Thank you.
@ I’m sorry it’s not RRS but Pro Media Gear that makes a nice one. It’s the ProMediaGear BBGV2 Boomerang flash bracket
Been using the bracket for over 40 years.
I stopped using mine many years ago and I’m really not sure why.
i have one, maybe 30 years old , made of steel , i also would recommend one especial for shooting wedding blessing , merry Christmas
I forgot how much I loved these brackets.
they are also good for making easier to hold the camera

Make sure you check out eBay - very cheap ones available.
previously you used mostly magbounce and now you shoot with magshere. is it better?
I shoot with a variety of their products. For this setup I like this one or just bare flash.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
I run with a similar unit, but use the round detached head & hang the AD200 from my belt…& can swivel the head
My favorite accessory of the AD200 is the remote head cord
why not, it worked well for centuries and then came UA-cam :D :D
I know - but I stopped using one myself oddly. And I always loved the images when I used it.
I have used this type of bracket for decades…..I suggest if no one has ever used it then you must give it a go……no more nasty shadows when shooting vertical!!
It really is worth a try - it does work well
I still have my Metz 45 CT 5 off camera flash and wonder why they stop with that style.
It was the Lumedyne for me - they went out because of cost of components. Miss those flashes
just out of curiosity, does the bracket allow for enough vertical room to use the Roundflash collapsible beauty dish or is the beauty dish too big and will cover your lens?
I think it would be to large. ProMedia Gear has a bracket that would work for that. Their brackets are expensive AF but worth every penny.
How do you use flash without catch light in the eye?
Not really sure of your question
Do you remove the catch light in post? Coz those eyes are clean 😅
@@tomtakumi no. I think maybe you aren’t seeing them. But they are coming from a small Speedlight
@@kaskoPhoto apologies for my ignorance. I always have a problem with blown out eyes when using flash. 😢
@ dial it back - it is probably set to high
Is that Kris Collins?
I can see the resemblance
an almost on camera flash...
Yea, until you go vertical.
The Newton camera bracket was the best. But I think the owner passed away.
I’ve never tried it myself. There were lots available at one time but only a few that were really great
