- My archives: Behind the scenes schooling at Aachen '95. Reiner Klimke on Biotop the day before the competition. A lovely warmup in the snaffle. Lateral work in the trot. Some commentary by Bill Woods. More at www.woodsdressage.com.
Klimke was not at odds with his horse, not forcing, correcting, pulling, releasing, re-pulling, on a continuous basis. He encouraged forward motion, a long neck without rolling behind the vertical, always staying light. Masterful. Sadly not seen at warmups anymore.

Eine Freude, diesem Mann zuzusehen. Kein Vergleich zu den beiden Reiterinnen, die wirken, als ob sie ihre Pferde bekämpfen würden. Auch wenn Dr. Rainer Klimke nicht mehr lebt, so hält seine Tochter das Vermächtnis hoch mit ihrer eigenen, feinen Reiterei. Frau Werth kämpft immer noch gegen die Pferde.

This truly is dressage as it should be, and it breaks my heart to compare this to what passes for dressage today. Dr. Klimke is sorely missed.
Thank you for posting this. It makes my heart smile to watch. What a wonderful man. He was a true 'horseman'. I am so happy that he passed on his kindness to his wonderful daughter, Ingrid whom I've had the pleasure to watch. His passing was a huge loss to the horse world.

A rider I can truly aspire to become as good as (but never will!). Happy, relaxed horse being allowed to use his head and neck instead of having them jammed rigidly the whole time. Lovely!

Unbelievable. I met a German lady who rides Andalusians and we talked about Reiner Klimke for a good 20 or so minutes. He was probably not only the best rider but also the best horseman of all time.
What a sight for sore eyes!!! Many thanks for this too. I was there, also had a press pass and was with friends who knew him well. Was this the year that Klimke got such wildly varying scores from all five judges in the GP? It was ludicrous, and just shows how subjective judging can be even at this level. I interviewed him on a number of occasions afterwards, and he was very, very, anti deep and round.
So simple, SO beautiful. Thank you.

a classically correct warm up and correct postures in all moments - Notice that horse's neck is long under neath in as well on the top - nice open throatlatch and not a crushed, broken neck. Now we see short curled necks and flipping front feet, high croups and trotting on the spot piaffes - UGH ! Would the classical ballet world accept ballerinas that did not demonostrate classical postures ? like extend legs and necks !

I saw him in LA in 1984. I only watched the test from the in-gate because my seat was facing south in the heat. But there was much more to see from the racetrack grandstand that faced north, was covered, and looked at the 5 or 6 warm ups .
He was so much class!
I love watching behind the scenes training sessions with the masters. I am suprised watching new top riders school. call it rollkur or behind the bit flexion. there are very few riding at the top levels today as Rheiner is here.

Yes. I believe daughter Ingrid showed him after Klimke's passing.
It is a sad commentary when trainers, riders and judges are allowed to abuse their horses with rolkur.
Dr.Klimke clearly demonstrates that it is not necessary............we lost a true master of classical dressage

Does anyone else see the difference in his seat in the half-pass? I was taught to sit on the inside seat bone in the direction of travel, but today, I see riders sitting on the outside seat bone.
