  • New tractor owners frequently ask the question... "is this implement too big for my subcompact tractor?" One of those implements that most often comes up is the box blade. So, if you're looking to buy one for your Kubota BX (or similar) tractor and you're wondering if it will pull a 5 footer or do you have to stick to a 4 footer, this video is for you.

    Because of your video, I've just got back from picking up a 60" box blade! Great content!

    Looks pretty good Sam!
    All i would suggest, and this is just my own opinion from my own experiences... just use the rippers for digging out potholes. (no point in digging up a good flat area of the driveway) If you don`t dig out the potholes, they`ll be back real fast. Just moving stone over the potholes isn`t going to keep them from coming back. You`ve got to dig them completely out, then run your extra stone over the pothole areas and blend it all in.

    Thanks for the video. I have been wanting a box blade but wasn't sure if my BX could handle the job. You proved that it can. Thanks again.

      You are very welcome. When you get it, always remember the agle of the dangle is super important. It determines how much material builds up in the box and how much is smoothed underneath the blade. A hydraulic top link is an excellent addition to a box blade. That's definitely on my wish list.

    I wanted a 4' box blade but the dealer suggested the 5' for my new Yanmar 424, it has much larger tires, sure that traction won't be a problem, haven't used it yet, I need to rip out roots first. Thanks for sharing!

      How does it handle the 5’ blade. I have the same tractor and was wondering if I could go 5’ since it’s hard to find 4 footers with rippers.

    I have a Massey GC2410 and a 5 foot box blade. It can tow it, but not too far before releasing the load. Still gets the job done, but like you say, a 4-foot would be the right size.

    Even the 4 foot box blade behind a BX will spin the tires if you get the box full of gravel. I know, I've done it a few times LOL. The only thing I wish is that I had a hydraulic top link to more easily and quickly change the angle of the box blade front to rear. The box blade does well, I would like to get a 60" rear grading blade and a land plane but not sure they make one for the BX.

    • @samsdoinstuff

      A hydraulic top link would be a game changer. I definitely want one... and a cab, and a snowblower, etc, etc... lol

    thanks for sharing the video, I use a 5-ft wide box blade on my 30 horsepower four-wheel drive New Holland and it can't pull the box blade when it gets full of dirt the tire starts spinning and it loses traction

    Before I watch, it will if you don’t use it.However if you fill the box with gravel it’s going to struggle. My L works a box that big. I suggest a land plane.

    I believe the old adage of 5hp per foot of box blade applies more to 2wd tractors. I have a 19hp Kubota 4wd and am constantly amazed by what it can do that I would have thought I'd need a larger tractor for.

    • @samsdoinstuff
      @samsdoinstuff  Рік тому +1

      4wd makes a huge difference and if it were gear driven rather than hst, it would pull even more. They are mighty little beasts 👍

      No problem at all! It's a Harbor Freight QH and you just gave me a great idea for a video. I bet it would be helpful to show how I made it work with my implements. It took some grinding and some drilling but saved me a few bucks.

    • @samsdoinstuff

      I like to think of it like spreading butter on bread. Tilt the knife with the blade down to scrape off material. Flatten it to spread and tilt the blade back to smooth it out.

    I haven't learned to use the box blade very well, must be doing something wrong. Have a 4 foot one and GC1725. I tend to use a 6 foot chain harrow mostly. Seems like the BB either digs too deep and stalls the tractor or it's skimming over the top and not doing anything.

    • @samsdoinstuff
      @samsdoinstuff  Рік тому

      It really depends on how far out or in your top link is. Too far in and it digs deep. Too far out and it skims across the top. Definitely takes practice and I tend to have my hand on the 3 point lever all the time to adjust it. Keep trying. You'll get it 👍

    Ya I'm not sure about the experts calculations either. I have a old 94 Honda 6522 diesel, 22 h.p. 4x4 6sp fwd, 3 rvs. I picked up a Carter 60", extremely heavy with five rippers. I have had it in low lock fwd, and rippers set all the way down to last slot, it tries to dig a hole to china. Keeps pulling with packed DG spilling over the back!
    Hey! Don't cut your 'crown off the center of the road! If you don't keep that crown, you will get pot holes. That crown is the only thing that sheds the water off the road. You can always adj. right stabilizer shorter and recut the sides. Only in one direction, down and back. YOu know by now i'm sure. Have fun!
