thanks for this video. Indeed today it rained, the Peterhof and Catherine Palace were closed. The line at the Hermitage was HUGE but there was no queue for the machines. I found the same at Saint Issacs Cathedral. Your tips saved my day - many thanks. Siobhan from Ireland

Best time to visit: end of May - mid-June, September, early October to avoid crowds. November-through April - not recommended because of poor weather and lack of sunshine especially November-December unless you want to experience Russian winter ??

I am really really astonishing what I am watching this video .I really surprise , acutely I didn't know there are great museums and places in Russia . Defiantly I will visit Russia ,but there is problem Moscow far away 400 KM from St. Petersburg, so I don't know if I can go on the morning from Moscow to St. Petersburg and go back to Moscow at the evening but I don't know that enough few hours . I did it last year when I visited Italy . I went from Rome to Venice was 400KM too .I went in the morning and go back at evening was great time. I wish I will do it .

The Hermitage is among the top ten museums in the world. St. Petersburg is called the Venice of the North. There are many palaces - museums and the world-famous Mariinsky Theater in the city. There are also many attractions in the suburbs of St. Petersburg. In one day you will be able to visit only one museum and take a short walk around the city. The best time to visit is June, the period of white nights. The distance from St. Petersburg to Moscow is 634 km.

there is a train going from Moscow to St Petersburg - Sapsan (it's the name of the train). It takes about 4 hours. The first train leaves around 5:40 in the morning. The last returning train leaves at 9 PM. It would give you about 12 hours to see the city.

You can also get special tickets to the Hermitage's Gold Room and Diamond Room with guides who may or may not speak English; inquire when purchasing tickets. Even without understanding Russian what you see is incredible in both rooms. Lots and lots of gold from the very ancient Scythians and other ethnicities, and lots and lots of exquisite diamonds set into tiny boxes, medals, jewelry and numerous other items. Not to be missed.

Did anyone notice it was empty? imagine the Louvre, the Met or any other National Museum being this empty? If you a UK or USA National try getting a visa! It is possible to get a visa for 72 hrs if you take the ferry from say Helsinki or Stockholm but you have to buy all sorts of other "official" tours, scandalous.

The Jordan staircase and hallway near the entrance were packed in late July several years ago, however there are hundreds and hundreds of rooms in the Hermitage far off the beaten path were only you and the little old lady who sits in the chair in each room will be the only ones. We were in a distant room displaying parchment documents with red wax seals. We are American and do not speak Russian except for Da, Nyet and Spasibo. The little old lady came up to us and pointed to a large signature with flourishes and said, proudly, "Katerina"! I said, Catherine the Great?" and she said, "Da!" I said "spasibo" and gave her a big smile. She was interested in sharing with us her heritage. It is as if we saw a Russian looking at a copy of the Gettysburg Address and said, "Abraham Lincoln" in a proud and knowing way. This is what makes travel so fulfilling and enjoyable. Little moments like that. I encourage all Americans to go to St. Petersburg. We were there for 8 days and could have used 14. Still, we saw a huge number of churches, museums and palaces.
