  • Welcome back to another video friends! Here's my first time working with a larger live edge piece. Hope you enjoy!
    I picked up these slabs from Richard Young, a local Central Kentucky guy that runs a saw mill, IG @richardyoung0896 if you are local.
    Matt Cremona Live Edge Waterfall - Learn to use cauls: • How to Make Waterfall ...
    I had to just take some time and run the hand plane across the surface to see what kind of character lay underneath this walnut. Out of the medium and small slab, this bench project was accomplished with the smaller slab. If you have any suggestions for the larger one, leave a comment below.
    I kept moving along and debarked with a chisel and then i had the slabs sitting around for a couple weeks while I came up with a way to get them flat. I decided to build this slab flattener that I had seen on Instagram from a fellow woodworking. If you are interested in one of these, message me below and I’ll send you his info.
    There was a learning curve to this sled and I definitely went too deep initially but with a brand new 2” bit, it wasn’t really a problem. I eventually transitioned to a larger diameter bit with the carbide inserts which was a 2.5" diameter bit, I’ll put both of those down in the description.
    There was a large cavity in the slab that I needed to fill and I had initially tried the epoxy that I had on hand but since it was not a think pour epoxy, I ended up getting cracks which wasn’t a huge deal as I’d be covering it up with the final layer of epoxy.
    I started the process of creating the miter and made another error in the project by not realizing my track saw was set to 22.5 degrees instead of 45. I made another final 45 degree cut to finally get the miter that would create the continuous grain effect from the seat of the bench to the leg portion.
    When it came time to join the pieces together to create that miter, my only option was my biscuit joiner, not my first choice but you use what you have to get the job done.
    Clamping a 45 degree miter can be a difficult task, I learned this technique from Matt Cremona where you use cauls to accomplish this. I’ll put his video down below if you are interested.
    I debated on what would go best with this walnut and I wanted to do a steel opposing leg but I’m not a metal worker so I opted for a maple trapezoid and decided to give it unique lines and comment down below how you think it turned out.
    I used my mini cross cut sled and table saw to get the angles just right on the end grain for the top of the trapezoid. I assembled and glued up the top and the sides and then worked on the bottom piece to finalize the opposite side leg base.
    When it came to completing the void, I purchased small amount of clear thick pour epoxy and colored it with a steel pigment and I think the color goes well with walnut.
    When it came to sanding the top, I had just purchased the new Festool cordless sander and i was excited to use this tool. I also used up to 1200 grit and man was that bench smooth. Around this same time I purchased the Festool domino since I had two other projects I needed it for. That domino would have been very handy for the miter joint. Keep in mind that this was a 4-6 month project, one of the slow ones.
    Ones the sanding was complete, I decided to go with the Odie’s oil for the finish. I was called out by the company for applying it incorrectly so be careful if you the product and post it on social media. I appreciated their suggestions and they have a good video on the proper techniques so check that out if you use it. I probably used too much but in the end, it didn’t matter to me. I love how the grain and epoxy popped.

    Awesome work, i'll be taking a few pointers from this. I watched another video where someone used clamping jigs for the mitre joint, it was 4 x 45 degree blocks glued to maybe 1/4" ply that is maybe twice as long as the blocks giving you a section of the ply to clamp the jig to the bench rather than glue it

      Thank you! I really like that idea of blocks glued to plywood. I will try that next time.

    love how you have two different legs and have the live edge at the same time. When you attach the regular leg to the table top, try figure 8 fasteners or z shape fasteners instead of glueing them up directly to allow wood movement, since you only glue up on one side so it may cause split in the future.

    • @WorkingTimbersCo
      @WorkingTimbersCo  Рік тому

      Yep, good suggestion. I use Z clips now to attach all my tops. So far no issues on this project but would change that one thing for sure. Thanks for watching!

    Good video, and I think this was a creative project. Here are some points to consider:
    1. You should probably have made the lower cross piece of the trapezoid I little off the ground so the bench won't rock on any little irregularity on the floor. Similarly, you could cut a shallow arch at the bottom of the "waterfall leg," giving it two separate feet.
    2. I think the design would have been a bit more interesting if on the trapezoid legs you had made the chamfers of different size on the inner side vs. the outer side of the legs.
    3. I think you made the overhang beyond the trapezoid a little too long. It looks a bit out of proportion, and like if someone sat on that end of the bench it might tip up.
    Just my two cents. Nice project.

    • @WorkingTimbersCo
      @WorkingTimbersCo  Рік тому +1

      Really appreciate the suggestions. I can definitely see your point of view. On the trapezoid placement, there wasn't enough surface on the underside to support the base of the trap so I had to keep it tucked in some so I could attach it completely and so far, the bench is fine. No issues with tipping. Thanks for watching!

    Great looking piece, and well worth the effort, I'm building a rustic oak bench, my slab is only 1 inch thick and I'm struggling to find a way to fix the legs, I don't have a biscuit jointer but I can dowel, I think I'm also going to install a cross rail for added stability, what do you think? I'm very open to ideas.

      @WorkingTimbersCo  2 роки тому

      I’ve had a few comments since I made this one about wood movement which could be valid. I used the domino to attach the maple leg but I would probably use fasteners going forward.
      Is your question about the mitered leg? If so, I think mostly anything would work there to help line it up when gluing. Thanks for watching!

  • @kyleames7697

    Great job on this! What could I use other than the domino tool? Just not sure I have $1,000 to invest in the domino hole tool. Thanks in advance

    • @WorkingTimbersCo
      @WorkingTimbersCo  7 днів тому

      If you are referring to the part where I add the slab to the legs, I would probably not glue it up or use dominoes the second time around since they won’t allow for wood movement. So far there haven’t been any issues at all. I would probably go with Z clips or something like that to attach it. For dominoes replacement in general you could try for a doweling jig. Those are really great actually. Hope that helps.

    Nice job guy! I love the tables. I prefer the wooden leg over the metal.
    When you make the 45° cuts for the leg how do you figure the angle as the edges are not much help?
    I guess the same question for the leg. What did you align to? I bet aligning the dominos was a pain.

    • @WorkingTimbersCo
      @WorkingTimbersCo  3 роки тому

      Thanks Jim! The wooden base is growing on me! For the 45 miter, I measured the live edge like a box with my rulers and estimated the cut line. Turned out great!

    Wonderful job man, not trying to criticize at all. Curious if you might have issues in the future with the trapezoid leg separating from the Walnut table. Possibly could have used glue on the dominoes only and not the wood over all points of contact, to allow for seasonal movement. Only considering the opposing grain direction of the top and the legs. Seasonal movement is no joke! I want a lot watching I really appreciate it man thanks! 👍

    • @WorkingTimbersCo
      @WorkingTimbersCo  3 роки тому

      David, this means a lot man. One of my major weaknesses as a woodworker is figuring out wood movement with design so I love that my viewers provide good feedback! So if it ends up separating, just reattach with dominos with maybe spacers then remove spacers once it dries? Suggestions welcome! Appreciate it!

      @@WorkingTimbersCo Awesome. I'm doing this exact same thing with cherry. I have a chainsaw milled and a pile of cherry that is ready to roll. I came back to this video to check some things.
      I'm thinking on adding an walnut inlay on the corner in a couple spots. Not sure how to hog out the wood. The customer thinks he wants down or at least the appearance of such. Might talk him out of it if I can figure this out. Lol
