Such a great way of saying it: "Eyes are all the same, but they see differently. So every woman is beautiful, it just depends on the man who's looking at her... If the world were not so tense, men would notice that life is really beautiful." If as a culture we spent less time trying to be attractive to everyone, placing our security in whether other people find us or our partner attractive - we'd enjoy the simplicity and calm of faithfully loving one another.
Eyes are not all the same, either. That is obvious even through a simple observation of those around you. And it will get worse if you ask an optometrist.
This shows how much times have modernized, the part when the village leader acknowledged that women should not be judged and forced into such beauty standards, this is because I knew about this culture as I had come across a video about it years ago. I thought this was the same video and realized this is more recent and I’m glad to see that that the practice is much less common now. I love that the women were referring to their youth when speaking of the experiences, which again shows it’s not being actively passed down.

I feel like you can be kind and understanding while interviewing these communities.. while still acknowledging harm and its roots (in this case, it’s primarily misogyny and classism). That should be expected of someone attempting to explore the complexity of humanity, and make commentary on it. This was a very surface-level, toe-dipped-in-the-water attempt at journalism. I was hoping to see more nuance and empathy here.
@@snickerdoodlesandalmondmil1002 I guess you're right. We can be kind while acknowledging harm in a society. I thought this documentary did that though. (I'm genuinely curious btw)
@@wazulpoosh7187 I just feel like he could have done longer, more in-depth interviews and asked less basic questions. The trauma of this practice isn’t exactly captured in a short video. It’s just asking what kind of foods they eat to get fat, how they vaguely feel about it, and what they think beauty is. With half the video being him walking from place-to-place talking to the camera. Wish he showed more of this community and its beauty/day-to-day life in silence, without featuring his face so much. He doesn’t ask about the beatings or any health issues they’ve personally developed, or what ages these force-feedings usually start, or how much older the men are that they get married off to. He doesn’t interview any politicians or activists on the broader scope of this (like if any legislation is/is going to be implemented to address this child abuse). He doesn’t even touch upon how common female genital mutilation is there. Or discuss the history of this practice and how it came about in depth, which I get would take research on his part as opposed to just interviews, but it’s important for viewers to grasp. Or at least find historians in the country to interview about this practice. And he focused far too much on himself (his tone-deaf dream-talk about finding an authentic market), and sometimes talked about these people like he’s observing animals in the wild (like his commentary on the men holding hands). It’s very difficult for some white tourists to wander into a country like this and be able to make commentary on their culture without making it sensationalist or exploitative, but it CAN be done. Someone mentioned a longer documentary done by a woman years ago on this topic, and that she’d done a far better job reflecting these women’s realities. I hope to find it.

It isn't just "women". This practice takes place with young girls in an effort to make them look older. Young girls are often fattened from the age of 6 or 7 and are coerced using techniques that cause physical and mental anguish. This practice made a comeback in Mauritania after a military junta took over the country in 2008.
It's also child abuse to allow fat children to be bullied in school and do nothing about it but teach kids to secretly laugh at them as most Americans do
I'm hoping that one of the comments in Italian is mentioning the obvious humor that my English speaking counterparts clearly missed. But the fact that the "Big Lady" in Mauritania is a "little person" is hilarious. Thank you for the Edit! Well done!
It has always been a Man's world whether we admit it or not. It breaks my heart how many women are forced to do so many things against their will..just to be wanted, liked, married and " loved". This is why they need women's rights as every woman in the whole world deserves to choose what she wants to do with her life..feelings and body.
Not always...the world was more feminist and matriarcal before, but then, the 3 monotheistic religions came - judaism, christianism and islam- and they ruined everything. They are the biggest culprits for women discrimination.

8:37 I totally agree with this man’s philosophy that the people of the world should approach things more calmly. People are far too stressed, and I see all the time in videos that people are complaining of anxiety.
somehow this video is so comforting, shattering the ideas of beauty in 12 minutes as proposed by social media these days specially for females who have always been called fat and dhamed even when they weren’t. I find this video comforting for the fact that these ideas of female’s beauty are just so superficial…
Yes, it‘s nice to see our current western beauty standard challenged, to show us in what a bubble we really live. But ultimately it also highlights how arbitrary all these different beauty standards are, for the most part. Historically, it was usually thicker women who were seen attractive - look at ancient paintings and sculptures, you never really see a skinny woman. Biologically it does make sense though that a thicker (not necessarily obese) woman would be seen as more attractive and desirable by men rather than a frail and skinny one - which one do you think is stronger and better equipped to bear and care for children? Being very skinny, like those models that are considered the epitome of beauty, can take a toll on fertility.

No! As an Arab Muslim, everytime I see an Arab or Muslim from any country, race, or skin color, even if different from mine, I immediately feel a sense of closeness, brotherhood and sisterhood. Just shows you the beauty of Islam and this world when people unite. "Oh man kind! We have created you from male and female, and made you into different nations and tribes that you may know one another, verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is he who fears him the most..." -Quran 49:13
This is sad but it's also comforting. It means if you are made to feel bad because of your healthy weight (weight that doesn't contribute to health problems) then you are probably in the wrong country because somewhere in the world there are people very happy to be like you
ndiamanda, i wouldn't say these women are "happy", but I think I understand what you're saying....that beauty standards are completely subjective and opinion-based, and that what is frowned upon in one land is considered desirable in another.
That's the thing, though -- _"weight that doesn't contribute to health problems."_ When I used to be obese, there were men who thought that was beautiful, but I was very unhealthy. Some supermodels are considered beautiful, but they're unhealthy-thin. We all need to be what our HEALTHY weight is, not what society says is "beautiful." That won't be the same weight for everyone, whatever is healthiest for each of us. ❤

If as a culture we spent less time trying to be attractive to everyone, placing our security in whether other people find us or our partner attractive - we'd enjoy the simplicity and calm of faithfully loving one another.
FRFR... that was such a eye opener
Very true, I always felt that concept, but never articulated the way I just heard it.
Eyes are not all the same, either. That is obvious even through a simple observation of those around you. And it will get worse if you ask an optometrist.
Yes very well said. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

First time I’m seeing interactions with different tribes in a documentary that aren’t presented as a means to shame them or judge them. But rather to understand them and to simply learn about them. Truly beautiful ❤❤ And the people in this video have such a beautiful way of speaking as well ❤❤
I feel like you can be kind and understanding while interviewing these communities.. while still acknowledging harm and its roots (in this case, it’s primarily misogyny and classism).
I don't believe anywhere it was made to appear that force feeding women was a good thing to be encouraged. I'm interested to know what a more empathetic and nuanced approach would entail?

When I worked in Nepal 20 years ago, I did a field study in a remote area. I lost some weight and got a serious tan. Back in Kathmandu my neighbour told me, I looked better when I was pale and had more weight on me. I told her in Europe it is the other way around.
I hate hearing people tell me to gain weight, it's so damn insulting. I know I've been single for 10 years because men don't like thin women I'm sure, but I'm not going to risk trying to change myself for somebody. Last time I tried to change myself for somebody they ended up beating me up. That's why I'm single. I don't trust men. The majority of them become abusive if they don't get their way.

Grazie

It isn't just "women". This practice takes place with young girls in an effort to make them look older. Young girls are often fattened from the age of 6 or 7 and are coerced using techniques that cause physical and mental anguish. This practice made a comeback in Mauritania after a military junta took over the country in 2008.
Exactly. It’s frustrating that this man can’t call this what it is: misogynistic and classist abuse. That impacts children too.
It is absolutely child abuse

It has always been a Man's world whether we admit it or not. It breaks my heart how many women are forced to do so many things against their will..just to be wanted, liked, married and " loved".
This is why they need women's rights as every woman in the whole world deserves to choose what she wants to do with her life..feelings and body.
Not always...the world was more feminist and matriarcal before, but then, the 3 monotheistic religions came - judaism, christianism and islam- and they ruined everything. They are the biggest culprits for women discrimination.

Bellissimo video Giuseppe
somehow this video is so comforting, shattering the ideas of beauty in 12 minutes as proposed by social media these days specially for females who have always been called fat and dhamed even when they weren’t.

No! Questi col cervello non stanno a posto, punto e basta. @@barby8631

This is sad but it's also comforting. It means if you are made to feel bad because of your healthy weight (weight that doesn't contribute to health problems) then you are probably in the wrong country because somewhere in the world there are people very happy to be like you
its not comforting at all, it just mean that wherever you go, no matter what you do, what you look like, there are gonna be people who won't like it.
ndiamanda, i wouldn't say these women are "happy", but I think I understand what you're saying....that beauty standards are completely subjective and opinion-based, and that what is frowned upon in one land is considered desirable in another.
