I’m a Gambian woman, and what hurts me the most is that if a Gambian man wants to marry a Gambian woman who is two years older than him it beefs talk of the town or his parents won’t agree to it but for a white woman who is old enough to be his grandmother, it’s okay
It's no different than when senior men go to the Philippines, Taiwan, etc, to look for someone young to "marry". Except some of them are also looking for children too 🤬
Yea that's so heartbreaking smh but like you stated it's definitely happening and the more money they have the easier it is to accomplish what they really want.
The difference is that these old women divorced their husbands, and took everything from them, to go have wild times. Whereas the old men going to the Philippines has everything taken from them, and are now trying to mend their broken hearts with women who are more caring.
@@AnthonyLauderno! Those men are there abusing children and preying on impoverished young woman. The biggest difference is that these women are probably targeting impoverished adult males.
Keep telling yourself that, dude. How do you know these old women didn't work careers their entire lives, and it was their own money they decided to waste? No differrent than old men who seek brides overseas. You'll see how much those Philippine women "care" about these old men when the money runs out. Men are better at self delusion. I have worked, in the US, with people from The Gambia and from Ghana. I would love to work always with such committed, intelligent, dedicated, problemsolving souls. That's the simple truth. The respect you received is respect you deserve. All through history, people everywhere on the planet have needed to rely on relationships in order to live. People get jobs because of who they know, as often as because they are truly suited for those jobs. People get into schools because their parents went there. People marry for many reasons, love being one among them - will he be a good provider? Do we both want children? Will she be there for me even if disaster strikes and I lose my health? Many reasons. There is no more shame in this, now, than there was in American women choosing among suitors on the basis of who could best provide for them. My heart went out to all involved. A world where all people have enough, have what they need, would be a lovely world but we aren't there yet. If that is what we dream of, we must keep trying.
this is amazing. I've seen tons of videos about ''older women being scammed by african men'' but this completes the sad and real picture that, as the reporter put it ''you don't know who to feel sorry for''. The reporter was incredible. I hope to see more of him.
you could argue that for any women seeking her "handsome prince". What i the difference between this story and "Cinderella"? WHy is it only OK when women are seeking a man to pay for them and transform their life?
The difference between those two examples is the european women being scammed think they’re talking to rich european men, if they knew they were talking to poor african men they would want nothing to do with them. In this case the women know who the men are in person, and it’s who (what?) they want.
It works both ways. Female African scam artists search for lonely older foreign men to scam money from while promising to meet them. A friend of a male friend of mine came into contact with a Gambian woman years ago and has been sending money to her for years. She makes up some fake excuse. She promised many times to visit him, but never has. He has sent her tens of thousands of dollars, but has never met her. All his friends have tried to tell him that she is a liar and a scam artist, but he keeps sending her money! He's in too deep.
As a 56 year old woman - It amazes me that any middle aged or older woman would be offended that a poor young man would want money for being with them.
The best thing about the video is the narrator`s insight. I love a thoughtful, intelligent person who genuinely tries to learn about and understand other cultures. He asked the best questions, has a strong sense of ethics, and is so candid in his responses. Brilliant!
I’m impressed with the presenter. He’s a great balance of open-minded and skeptical, and his analysis allows for nuance and compassion without sacrificing realism. His analysis at 27:56 about believing the guy’s current sincerity, but also that it’s unlikely to last into the future is a surprisingly nuanced view being expressed by a presenter - we don’t get that often in this format of documentary. He also flags when people’s stories don’t add up, which is refreshing and insightful. He rightly spells out the history of colonialism and draws the link with the current situation, as well as makes plain that poverty drives this dynamic. The only piece of analysis that I wish he’d mentioned is that this same dynamic plays out all the time the world over but usually older men and younger women - this just feels more notable because it’s an unusual reversal of gender dynamics.
"The only piece of analysis that I wish he’d mentioned is that this same dynamic plays out all the time the world over but usually older men and younger women - this just feels more notable because it’s an unusual reversal of gender dynamics." EXACTLY Normally ...its men That Rule The Roast" Yep TOTALLY AGREE , yep the presenter seems nuanced and ok, doesn t he?
I love that moment when he says "I dont know who to feel sorry for anymore!" I'd say that sums up the whole situation perfectly. For me, I don't think I could get over the fact that this is where slaves were captured and the big houses used to belong to slave lords and then here you come as a European to pick out your young man. 😬
I’m not going to excuse the European slave traders, but according to my reading, most of the capturing of slaves was done by the native Mandikas who traveled inland using the Gambia River as the corridor. Neither Islam nor Christianity would condone the lifestyles of the “male prostitution” that is taking place in this documentary. The decay of morality is not going to elevate the society and quality of life in the Gambia. Investment in infrastructure, education and industry will facilitate the rise from poverty. Exploitation is exploitation and no one wins in the end.
Yes, it's like you're sleeping with your slave owner. You're on the other spectrum in of it and it's filthy and nasty. This is not what God called for a relationship. Where are the women of Gambia? I don't want to hear a black Gambian. Man. Say I don't want to marry a poor Gambian woman. Then build her up. Because getting with a slave owner is sickening.
P seems like genuinely nice lady! I wish her all the luck in the world, plus she seems to be with someone her own age. The guy she is with is not exactly young. An eye-opening documentary. Well done!

But HE doesn’t look 50! He looks younger. But SHE looks 65 and not attractive That’s the difference. Now the man can live without having to ever work again thanks to granny!
This is just genuinely sad. The guy with the 85 year old lover, is actually genuinely sacrificing himself to provide his dependents with a better life, and the 85 year old lady is trying to find happiness. It's a genuinely sad situation.
This has to be one of the best investigators I've seen in a while. He's so personable; his confusion, his guilt, his anger. It feels like he's watching it all unfold with the viewers. This whole situation is genuinely creepy though.
TBH I think the couple in the “Italian villa” house are just renting it for holidays. Why is that sign up saying it’s to let otherwise? You don’t just leave a “for rent” sign up and I doubt as she said “it was up before I came.” That doesn’t add up, nor does the lack of furnishings.
It was… very interesting to watch. 😩, when dude on the beach said he didn’t want to marry a black, that crushed me. I understand the economic drive to be with a financially stable white woman in that type of environment… so so sad.

“As soon as I land back in the UK, I’m back in pain.” That line changed my small, judgmental mind about what both sides are doing. Everyone has a right to happiness- even if it looks a lot different than what we may consider normal. Life seems to offer limited opportunities to truly feel free and happy. I hope everyone finds what they genuinely need and no one is hurt or scammed.
@vincelemaire -- if the OP is American, then it kinda is law. At least the right to pursue happiness. It's the foundation of our constitution-- life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Heck, even Bhutan, such a tiny nation, measures their GDP in happiness. So let people pursue their dream and their happiness. If a woman has the money to support a man, and he has the moral code to keep her happy and loved, then let them be happy. Same as if a rich older man here marries a beautiful trophy wife, or if a European man marries a woman from Thailand or Vietnam.
This makes me feel very sad. My ex husband is Gambian. There are only two years difference between us and we met here in the states. However as soon as he didn’t need me anymore financially he decided he wanted a second wife in Africa. We divorced. He married a woman from his culture and moved her here. I think the entire concept of love and marriage is different there.

I am sorry to say this but most African men, not just the Gambians consider African women to be their true wives/loves. Unless you meet a 2nd generation migrant/ one who has been culturally westernised, you will never be truly loved. I am an African woman and I know our men. Yup. At first it seemed like she was a victim of her husband's deception. But after a while it seemed like she was engaging in some deception herself... (self-deception at the very least, because it seemed like there was some hidden truth that was starting to rise to the surface, but she didn't want to see it).

How can it be an equal exchange of like minded people when the men are impoverished. You do what you have to do and make the best of it. I can't help but feel that Gambian women are being cheated out of a future with a Gambian man.
acjfiddler - Well, but not really. In set-ups like this, the man most likely will have (if he doesn't already have) a second relationship - with a Gambian woman/wife as well, and they will raise a family. And it's highly probably (if not certain) that everybody will be aware of the arrangement, even if it may go unspoken for their whole lives.
if they marry with Gambian women then the poverty line will just circulate forever making it harder for everyone now and future generations. It's a compromise they have to make

I am Jamaican, and I know for a fact in Jamaica that this happens in tourists destinations too. I personally believe this is directly tied to slavery and the legacy of it.
@citizenx-jz4dfMaybe so, but the fact is many people, especially whites are very much in the master-slave, superior/inferior concept. One of the reasons why whites go around the world to Asian and black countries seeking to fulfill their flesh at the exploitation of the vulnerable - men, women and children. Open your eyes and face reality. Whites think black and brown people are on earth to serve them, including sexually.
@citizenx-jz4df of course there was slavery in Gambia. Kunta Kinteh was from the Gambia. They had the doors to nowhere where they loaded the slave ships. Major port for the Atlantic slave trade. Slavery in the Americas and the Gambia are 100 % tied together
This work you are doing is so important. I've been watching documentaries about older British women scammed by young men they meet while on vacation in various countries across Africa. The British women are always portrayed as the victims. However, I can't help but consider whether they would be considered victims if they were white men dating very young girls in Southeast Asia. We need more unbiased perspectives such as your own that show both sides of the story. Well done-please keep up the great work!
Normally I would agree, but this documentary is obviously thinnly-veiled anti-yt-ism. It's a joke to think that grandmas, in a foreign country, are somehow "predators".
@@Morrosoy28 Gender is. Race? Not so much... quit being wilfully oblivious. It's ALWAYS about race. And by the way, you can thank the Europeans for that.
Your comparison is a little off. Older men with money date younger women from all over the world, not just old white men and not only the Southeast Asia. Rich and old men date more white women than Southeast Asian. Sugar daddies/mommies is the frequent term used in the scenario. Both the sides enjoy their reason for the relationship. If old British women dating young Gambian women is frowned upon, then all relationships in the world where older men date young women should be too. If your reason of comparison was that western men are seeking wives abroad, that is a totally different scenario, they find love, marry, and together start a family where they can be financially stable. No one exploits the other in that relationship, and many a times both the partners earn.
If something bad happens to a single woman, it has effects on the whole tourism industry. So these women are almost above law even if govt publicly says prostiution doesn’t exist.
The old ladies are telling us openly why they go to Gambia. Therefore, the old ladies cannot be a prey, because they go to Gambia to look for younger Gambian men. In this case, the old ladies have the power of money that they can use to prey on the younger Gambian men. Fortunately, the old ladies do not have to spend too much energy because their presence in the beach is enough to become a glamorous lure for the poor Gambian younger men.
People like you are the worst kind of racist. Those men are adults who choose to do that. They're not children who are manipulated just because they're poor.
@@pierrerochon7271 I agree.. but, would you be saying the same thing if the genders were reversed? People seem to react very different when it's an older, wealthy man with a younger, poor woman.
Interesting reversal. He says it feels degrading to see the men standing and waiting to be chosen. Imagine the thousands of women who've been through this very same thing, often because they, too, had no other options.
@@adrianmainz2716 he's not talking about these wealthy white women, but other countries (including those in the west) where female prostitution is prevalent and equally dangerous, with an added layer or mysoginy and systemic violence towards women.
Transactional relationships come in all forms across the globe. In fact, that's the norm throughout history. Marrying for "love" is a very recent concept. As long as all involved are adults and have no cognitive issues, who's to judge.
The parties in this regard do have cognitive issues, the women are typically codependent and the men covert narcissists! Trauma bonds, exploitation all the way!

To me P's relationship is the least problematic. It doesn't look like P is giving Bob money and they are the same race and in the same age group. Also, unlike the other European women, P seems genuinely happy and carefree in her relationship.
Maybe. But they'll probably be divorced as well in a few years. Once he has enough money, he'll divorce her for a younger wife he can have a family with. Maybe Bob's hit the jackpot by finding a woman he at least can actually like, but it's still a hustle in the end.

@@Upgraydez Prostitution is never good for either party. However, there are a lot of factors at play here in this situation and these men could be robbing people or doing something else that is dangerous to them or their community. This is a softer way to potential freedom and a lifestyle change. Most prostitutes, in the traditional sense, are just trying to get by on whatever scraps they can muster up. These men are gambling for lifechanging money. They can potentially take care of themselves and a large swath of their families. For the women's part, they are coming from a culture that doesn't value older women and doesn't validate them in a sexual space either. Older, single men are typically looking for younger women, for the same reasons these older women are looking for younger men: They want companionship, and they want to feel young and needed. That is what they are getting. Morally bankrupt? That's a matter of opinion. So long as everyone is happy in the end, that has to count for something. They are all adults here and if the government is unable to do anything to help these young men, then we can't sit here and judge.
The lady who feels well in Gambia but in pain in the UK - this is very true. I have an immune disease, and my body also reacts this way, altho, not Gambia as I have never been, but I live in an area quite high above sea level, lower oxygen & humidity, and am in pain. Places with high humidity and low altitude, and I feel fine. (just an fyi in case anyone is wondering why)
AKA men who take money from older women and pretend it's about "love." Neither of these people are having a real romantic relationship. It's all transactional.
Just like it is with young women who take money from older men. It is transactional and cross generational. Points to bigger issues of employment and governance in general
These couples seem to be enjoying themselves, good luck to them, even if the women only have a few years to live, it seems to be a lovely place to be happy in. What is love, anyway, mutual attraction and enjoying being together. Bless them all.
This was an important documentary. I see in the comments some people saying that it is mutual but I see it as exploitation of people’s misfortune. Given the history of the Gambia and slavery it is even more disturbing. You do not get a sense that anyone is truly being authentic about what they want and need with the exception of 2 of the ladies.
The couple that never fights is a red flag to me. It doesn't mean they have nothing to fight about, but maybe that the man doesn't feel comfortable fighting to defend himself.
These women are a particular type. They NEED social interaction. They always NEED, always take advantage of others to fill their own needs, and have never been fully self-reliant, so they are susceptible. But I don't feel sorry for them. They're either gullible or delusional, or both. I highly doubt they've ever been in mature, respectable, romantic partnerships. I doubt they have healthy, appropriate relationships with their own children. The whole thing is sad. But, these situations are not the same as a gold digging, young, WESTERN woman searching for an old rich man. That's absolutely NOT the same thing. Western women have many more opportunities to enrich themselves than people from poor nations do, like these young men, so their gold digging is more predatory than desperate. These older women are definitely taking advantage of people who have no choice about poverty. They should know better and have higher expectations of themselves rather than choosing to use other people as toys. It's healthy to accept yourself as you are, age included. But there's an expectation of behaviour that goes with age. I'm a senior woman, BTW.
Its really sad and humiliating for young people to feel so powerless and desperate in their country. The young people have dreams and hopes and energy. What will it take their government to create an enabling environment for businesses, innovation and empowerment and enterprises to thrive and these young people can be proud with their self worth and dignity.
West African men are this. Do not put this on African men. Even us from east south and north Africa are victims of these men. They marry our ladies to get passports from them. I don't know why issues of west Africa are generalized to the whole of Africa. Our country men do not even want dating old cargos from no where, people who colonized us? Never! This is a west African man's habit. They go around doing this to anyone who comes from a better land. Our governments are trying to kick them out because in as much as we are all Africans, this is not how we live. No man from east and south can do this BS! Unless you met him in Europe hustling but definitely not in our countries. Abomination
Absolutely, there is no hope and actual work on the ground for these young men. Imagine if the economy had jobs available they won’t resolve to this. These are capable men and if given the opportunity will earn an honest living. It’s sad.
This is so disturbing on so many levels. I'd hate to be a normal tourist there trying to have a holiday only to be harrassed by the "tour guides" because these women have created a supply and demand market, as well as creating a false reality around the value of tourism for the locals.

I went to work and spent some years there. Yes, lots of male offers... But more interesting was to find out why 75% of women still suffer FGM and raise their sons to marry up to 4 wives. My female friends told me "even if you are happily married, he will come up one day and just inform you he's taking a second or third wife". Expectations are different.

Except that if the two parties get married which is the ultimate for a man there, he won't care for a while. Later he'll get fed up and many things can happen there to a woman....... after she's redone her will. In the long run, the man will the winner and the woman exploited more.
No respect at all..
this is amazing.
@@SimonSverigegreat argument
Right this is horrible
As a 56 year old woman - It amazes me that any middle aged or older woman would be offended that a poor young man would want money for being with them.

For me, I don't think I could get over the fact that this is where slaves were captured and the big houses used to belong to slave lords and then here you come as a European to pick out your young man. 😬
Nope - the "big houses" belong to Gambians selling drugs in Europe for MANY years! 😅😂🤣

I don’t agree. They come to get laid, because caribean men would lay them.

This work you are doing is so important. I've been watching documentaries about older British women scammed by young men they meet while on vacation in various countries across Africa.
What surprises me is that these women aren't afraid.

Therefore I tapped on this platform and was totally captivated with interest. I must say I totally enjoyed the host and his compassion and assertiveness. It's so good to keep up with what's going on around the world.

Maybe Bob's hit the jackpot by finding a woman he at least can actually like, but it's still a hustle in the end.
so you believe in race smh idiot, the reporter as well as p have different a nationality than the natives, privileges and opportunities come with a passport, not to speak about social upbringing and and and

How do u feel about the prostitution? is that good for anyone?

Just like it is with young women who take money from older men. It is transactional and cross generational.
Points to bigger issues of employment and governance in general
As long as both parties understand it's transactional then that's fine.
All relationships are transactional. And ?
These couples seem to be enjoying themselves, good luck to them, even if the women only have a few years to live, it seems to be a lovely place to be happy in. What is love, anyway, mutual attraction and enjoying being together. Bless them all.
@@claudesantolini6335 life is too short. Let them enjoy it.
I agree
@@jessy1982or that the relationship is so superficial they have nothing to fight about
These women are a particular type.
There are people saying is mutual? 😂😂😂 wow
Its really sad and humiliating for young people to feel so powerless and desperate in their country. The young people have dreams and hopes and energy. What will it take their government to create an enabling environment for businesses, innovation and empowerment and enterprises to thrive and these young people can be proud with their self worth and dignity.
you can thank our african leaders for this mess
I agree so much.
Higher education and a solid infrastructure.
It’s sad.

My female friends told me "even if you are happily married, he will come up one day and just inform you he's taking a second or third wife". Expectations are different.

It's sad when circumstance dictates how we orient our preferences-sexual or otherwise. It seems a very contrived existence for both parties involved.
Yes but it is not your life so ?
Except that if the two parties get married which is the ultimate for a man there, he won't care for a while. Later he'll get fed up and many things can happen there to a woman....... after she's redone her will. In the long run, the man will the winner and the woman exploited more. Most of them we've seen seem unaware of all the stakes while the men do, just read between the lines of what we've seen in this doc.
