Jessica Lange: From Kong to Blue Sky | 1995
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 лис 2024
- Jessica Lange overcame a "dumb-but-pretty" stereotype from 1976's Kong to become one of the most revered actresses of the 1980s. In 1995, she won her second Oscar for a film that might never have been released. In this video, I tell that story and take a look at a year that was somewhat underwhelming for women in film.

I really LOVED Jessica's return to power in AHS. She is delicious one moment, terrifying another, and always has an air of vulnerability that frightens the viewer because at any moment you feel like her character could strike for the throat. I have no idea how she does that. She's amazing.
"Could strike for the throat" LOL, LOVE that description. :)
@Sinjin Smyth Who is Bruce Gender?
Jessica Lange shrieking about spending eternity in Hell surrounded by KNOTTY PINE!?! paneling is my spirit animal.
@Sinjin Smyth I can't see the resemblance, the only thing I see they have in common is age. As I am neither afraid of age nor transgendered people, I don't understand why you would say that. If you are being negative through fear of yourself being marginalised for the sake of the aged or transgendered, take a breath and realise you will be dead a long time and be thankful that by the grace of luck you don't have to question your gender....or do you?
@Sinjin Smyth omg such edgelord. Much triggered 🙄
I can’t believe that NYT article about Susan Sarandon’s “menopausal glamour” is real. My jaw literally dropped when I got to that part. And the fact that it was written as recently as 1995 is truly appalling.
Michael Alvarez Meh. You haven’t been paying attention. People talk about women like that NOW.
Gabe Logan he never ever said they didn’t still say that .....are YOU paying attention
Ty James A troll! A troll! I haven’t had one in ages. I miss you guys. Hey little trolly, do you want your troll 🍼. Come on you little brat. Suck your troll milk from the bottle. Suck. Suck. Suck.
Gabe Logan omg people are still sexist? I’m shocked! Shocked, I tell you! I had absolutely no idea. Thank you for informing me!
Michael Alvarez You’re welcome! Always looking to help out! 😀
I’d love to see your analysis on Winona Ryder’s career.
Same here I've been doing my research on her and its crazy the potential she had to be a dominating Hollywood queen
@@Kevin-rg3yc The media's treatment of mental illness in the '00s totally fucked her over. Had she gone through that ten years later (or maybe even ten years earlier when the studios would have covered for her) she might have had a very different story.
She never won Oscar and she currently does only Best Actress winners.
Kaber Us right her situation as well as what happened to Britney Spears were huge peaks to the media unfair treatment to mental illness it still haunts me to know how effective her career was bc of that shopping mall scandal
Same!
I almost cant believe anyone thought Jessica Lange was dumb at any point.. she is clearly a badass with some real darkness behind her stunning looks.
Watching Kong after watching Lang’s other performances its easy to pretend “oh no this is multilayered she isn’t this dumb its an act.” And expecting her to turn around and give a cruel smile or something.
But Kong isn’t that. And the people that first watched didn’t have the luxury of her other performances. But in Kong her character is a sexualised airhead. And it would be easy to dismiss her as that. But thats less her performance and more the writing.
@@rosiemurphy7793 *But then stIll (also) Whats wrong with a woman (just) being beautiful??? / i Also "hate" it when MALE actors (especially) say they dOn´t wanna be sex symbols anymore...As if admiring, or lUsting over a beautiful man is some kind of crime*
Wow. This is the perfect description of Ms. Lange. ❤
This channel is a more thoughtful and honest lens into Hollywood’s history than any movie, documentary or statement I’ve ever seen actually come out of Hollywood. It’s a complement to the channel, but also a damning condemnation of Hollywood itself. 🤷🏿♂️
Why would Hollywood examine itself candidly? They'd have to reckon with all the objectification, censorship, and general shadiness that's been a part of it since its creation
@Eddie at The LMV now that I did not know. Lol thanks
st Joan of Arc
It's also interesting how women over 50 have to look a certain way to be "thirsted" over, whereas Jeff Goldblum and Jon Stewart get to be called daddies with gray hair and wrinkles.
It's worth pointing out that women are calling Jeff Goldblum and Jon Stewart 'daddies,' not men; but I think that's a natural thing.
Speaking from an evolutionary standpoint, women generally look for a guy that's well-grounded and financially secure, which usually happens later in life for men; while men generally look for women that are younger because of their physical advantages in producing offspring.
Many people don't even want to have children, but there's a subconscious directive in women and men to advance the species. 'Daddies' is a direct reference to a man's ability to raise children.
Doug Capehart I don’t think that’s why women call them daddies. They call them that because they’re older and look handsome.
We live in an ageist society that treats older women like shit. We tell them that they are only good during their youth. Obsessing over women’s youthfulness isn’t necessarily about producing babies. Our culture has been sexualizing young girls for centuries. Our culture is deeply rooted in celebrating younger women and throwing older women in the trash.
I’m not saying you’re wrong, there’s some truth to what you’re saying but I don’t think that’s only why our society is so ageist.
Ever heard of the term "MILF"?
Sandy Weinhold Yeah the term is still very sexist because the older woman has to look a certain way in order to be considered desirable. It’s still ageist because it implies that women over a certain age aren’t “fuckable” or desirable unless you look like JLo or Nicole Kidman
@@dougcapehart "women generally look for a guy that's well-grounded and financially secure, which usually happens later in life for men; "
The average age gap for couples is only a few years in western countries. Much older men aren't that sought after outside of Hollywood and other affluent societies. It is only when you add poverty that the avg. age gap starts to get bigger. Women like young men too, it's just that sometimes they have to make sacrifices for financial reasons.
I’m so happy Jessica Lange’s talent has transcended generations. I was first introduced to her on American Horror Story. I had no idea she was such a celebrated actress back then. I have so much respect for her consistency and longevity, all while not exactly playing along with theHollywood game - taking breaks do theatre etc. Great video.
Ive been in love with her since I was 10, King Kong and Cape Fear were my two favorite movies of hers, and then when AHS came everyone was Jessica Lange this and Jessica Lange that. I was so happy to be like I knew of her before AHS Lol
DHGlee2013 Yeah AHS really introduced her and her work to a whole new generation. I’m so glad
@David K you should check out Lange in "Frances" - an excellent performance that would win the Oscar in most years. And in "Tootsie," Lange is very easy to look at!
where is the character work andy serkis would *never* lmao
Fun Fact: That's make up artist extraordinaire Rick Baker in the costume and Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime, Eeyore) doing the voice.
@Cas van der Wal ) Baker wasn't happy with the final suit ( he credited the cinematographer for making it look good enough on screen ).
there was also a huge animatronic replica created by Carlo Rombaldi ( I probably misspelled ) wich didn't work properly and was only used for when Kong breaks out of the cage.
Baker also designed and preformed the title character in the 1998 remake of Mighty Joe Young ( the original itself being a spiritual successor to Kong ) with better results ( some CG helped in certain shots )
I sense a Winona Ryder video coming soon. I'd love to see your take on her career as a whole. And why it is this way. I've always liked her. I'm happy to see support for her #justiceforwinona
Yeees please! I'm still waiting for a Winona video

Okay, but why does everyone leave Big Fish out of Jessica Lange's career. She was marvelous in it.
Especially in the Bath scene. Jessica had such great chemistry with Albert Finney in that Film.
That character was everything
"Andy Serkis WOULD never."
cut to me attempting to google "andy circus" lmao
Please do Marlee Matlin and her win in "Children of a Lesser God." I'm currently learning ASL and a huge fan of Marlee's. I would love to hear your thoughts on that movie.
I'm waiting for this one.
A video about Sigourney Weaver would be great as well. She’s the same age as Meryl and Jessica and became famous around the same time but has never won an Oscar and hasn’t been nominated in 30 years despite some incredible performances in the 90s and 2000s
The way you synthesize decade-long careers (and how you beautifully tied this video with this year's Oscar race) is absolutely stunning. Love, love, love this channel! Keep up the excellent work
Jessica's work in American Horror Story is phenomenal. I'm so glad you brought it up in this video. And I think stories about older women, who have experienced some shit, are far more interesting than stories about women in their 30s. What the heck Hollywood?
So women who're 30something or younger can't have lived interesting lives and/or seen some shit?
Christopher Brown I don’t think they’re saying that. I think they mean that it’s more likely an older woman would have lived through more interesting things in comparison on average.
@@RomanZolanski123 fair enough, but that does depend on what things those women, older or younger, are exposed to
I suspect it has something to do with a lack of interest in women's stories unless it's a biopic. A younger woman's story tends to have something to do with her potential relationships with men. The ingenue tends to be a romantic role. An much older woman's story tends to be about decline, and often also about how she is perceived by men where she's a spinster who wasted her youth or a faded beauty that men/society no longer have a use for. But there's this whole middle ground where a woman's story has the most potential to not be about men or having children.
@@mdp4022 Yeah, these are rough general categories. There are of course exceptions. Unfortunately we don't get a lot of movies about women in the middle part of their lives (movies starring women, I mean) so we tend to see them mostly as the wives or girlfriends of the main male character. Some of this storytelling is internalized bias but I would not be surprised if they're largely greenlighting the same kinds of movies on purpose.
I just stopped the really important thing I was doing... Jessica + BKR: PERFECTION!!
Right?!? "I just won the Nobel Prize fo--oh, wait, there's a new BKR YT vid! Sorry!"
I winced when the critics on Charlie Rose said Winona Rider had twenty more years to win an award. Now a comment like that sounds laughably naive.
it's sad :(
@@marvel096 That hurt :( I was totally in love with Winona in the 90s and the news of her shoplifting was crushing. Look how long it took for her career to semi-recover.
Well they didnt expect her to become a kleptomaniac...
@@BrokenSocialScene23 i really hope she resurfaces with more new and exciting roles!
Yeah, and look how a once drug addled, gun totting, uninsurable actor named Robert Downey Jr in comparison got his career rebooted to great heights.
Smacks of double standards to me.
I love that you gave a shout-out to Grace and Frankie.
Me too:)
I'm genuinely upset when this happens, especially when there are roles that deserve the award for best actress. As well as many other categories. This year we saw "the farewell" snubbed by the academy for best director, and best actress, something that was idnored by the media despite Awkwafina winning the Golden globe!
awa awa true and her golden globe was extremely historic. I’m still bitter over Lupita Nyong’o snub for Us bc she was winning best actress awards than any of the Oscar best actress nominees and her performance was a straight tour de force
The Oscars don't owe anyone recognition
@@Kevin-rg3yc Exactly 1994 over again. The C/M Golden Globe winner snubbed (Jamie Lee Curtis) and the critics darling snubbed (Linda Fiorentino - That time for eligibility issues, but probably she would be snubbed anyway). Also, ignored performances which were better (Irene Jacob, Judy Davis, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Isabelle Adjani). You can almost find the similar in this season Curtis - Awkwafina; Fiorentino - Nyong'o; Judy Davis - Woodard; JJL - Elisabeth Moss; Irene Jacob - Jessie Buckely...
@@jibrilleo yes I still wonder why Jamie lee Curtis never been nominated for an Oscar she has proven more to be tony Curtis daughter or the scream queen from Halloween and prom night she's an excellence actress. I can see 1994 be recaptured for this year alot and I know since the oscars had their lowest ratings ever bc of it they gonna try and make it up for next year
@@Kevin-rg3yc I think Jamie Lee Curtis is a victim of the Oscar bait. Genre movies don't win awards. Commercially success and awards seem to be mutually exclusive. Wasn't always like this, but definitely now. ua-cam.com/video/nxkjLQdFmRI/v-deo.html
Such a shame Linda Fiorentino was ineligible. And that Heavenly Creatures got no more than a script nod. Or that Toni Collette was a victim of genre bias.
Jade?
Duke DeMatteo The Last Seduction. Because it was released on cable before it was released in a theater, she was ineligible, I believe. It’s a shame is right. She was phenomenal in that. 1994 wasn’t as bad as portrayed. The nominees just didn’t represent the best work, though Jessica still deserved it. Plus, 1993 was an amazing year for women in film. So was 1995. Sometimes there are off years. Or they don’t look into the indies deeply enough.
Fourwalls2 Muriel‘s Wedding was eligible the following year and Collette got a Globe nomination. At least that year was incredibly strong which makes the Kidman and Collette snubs hurt less.
@@Michael-xi9nbAh ok, thanks for that!
Jessica Lange screaming "KNOTTY PINE" will forever remain one of AHS's finest mpments. Great video as usual
I saw that clip and started feverishly googling, “Jessica Lange screams ‘PIE!!’” Lol and obviously couldn’t find anything 😂. I thought she was yelling about pies.
I really like that you tend to refer to the actresses by their last names. A lot of the time, I see male actors being referred to by their last names (Ex. Depp and Firth) but female actors by their first names (Ex. Keira and Scarlett). It always feels kinda disrespectful to me. If everyone was treated the same it'd be fine but it feels like a way of not taking female actors as seriously or professionally as their male counterparts.
Cal it’s more of a personal thing with a lot of women, especially older women
I honestly just think it’s a case by case thing. For example, I almost never hear Tom Hanks referred to in the media as just simply “Hanks” or Eddie Murphy referred to as just “Murphy.” Conversely I see Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep sometimes referred to by their last names.
"Garbo"? "Crawford"? I think it depends on how big the name itself is
Johansson is a mouthful
Christopher Brown yeah I can agree with this. I’ve noticed more dramatic actresses like Streep, Kidman, Winslet and Blanchett get the last treatment while more mainstream actresses all the Jennifers, Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock all get the first name treatment
I find it ironic how Lange and Sarandon; had the difficulty faced being a leading actress while growing older and they both starred in feud - Got to the part of the video right when I wrote the comment 😂😂😂
44 years and still getting roles. That’s incredible longevity for an actor that’s usually reserved for legends/icons!
SHE IS A LEGEND!!!
I have a huge crush on Jessica Lange to this day. An icon and sometimes underrated
Please do a video on *Marion Cotillard* and her stunning 2008 Oscar win for the groundbreaking performance of Edith Piaf in La vie en rose? First French-language performance to win an Academy and second best actress win ever for a performance in a foreign-language film. One of the most deserved wins in the Academy’s history!
please keep upvoting so she can see this!
I think she would make collaboratively with Sophia Loren; who was the first person to win for a foreign language performance
She did a clip on how biopics are a sure oscar contender. And its getting boring.
Dude I watched this and I was blown fucking blown away the only other actress to blow my away was michelle Fairely aka catelyn stark in sex of seven a low budget Irish film she made when she was 24 and I was like Meryl who
@studyculture Laura never to me has done an Oscar worthy performance she came close but her ass she be lucky she got nominated
My friends acting professor starts his lesson on prop work with clips of Jessica Lange. He says that there is no one better at interacting with their environment.
I know she’s mostly retired but to see her win one more Oscar would just be the perfect end to such fabulous career!
She would've won again in 2010 had grey gardens been released in theatres
Alexis Anderson ABSOLUTELY!
HONESTLY WOULD COMPLETE MY LIFE!!!! I LOVE JESSICA SO MUCH. idk she just really seems genuine. To me she is no Hollywood cliche or gimmick
phsyqo completely agree
@Alexis Anderson- If Grey Gardens would have been released in theaters, I still don’t think Jessica would have won her third Oscar. I think most likely they would have given to Drew Barrymore (because of the narrative of honoring an acting dynasty, since she won the Golden Globes and the SAG over Lange). Most likely the studios would most likely commit category fraud and campaign Jessica Lange in Supporting but she would have lost to Monique in Precious, since she was the heavily favorite to win.
literally just when i thought “i hope be kind rewind posts a new video soon” i see this!!!
I have TBH, I can do without her feminist lens, but I HAVE been waiting on her since the Oscars
@@christopherbrown2706 a channel about best actress category is inherently feminist.
@@MrKadirbey not necessarily. You can discuss Best Actress Oscar winners without complaining that there're no good roles for women. (Good actresses and actors can elevate weak material and small roles.)
@@christopherbrown2706 But the point stands: Why do women have to "settle" for weak materials and limited number of leading roles? Worse yet, speaking roles? The problem exists. Not analyzing it in a video discussing the film industry via Best Actress Oscars is ignoring the elephant in the room.

AH! Jessica Lange is my favorite actress (tied with Isabelle Huppert), so thank you for spending the time to make this video! 💌

44 years in the business!
UA-cam decided to insert a damn advertisement RIGHT as Lange was IN THE MIDDLE of yelling “knotty piiiiine!” and honestly I just can’t face the world anymore.
Jessica Lange??? Drop everything. I'm in.
Thanks a lot from Russia! My mother recommended me to watch 'Frances'. I think this movie was known in the USSR because F. Farmer went here and used to be an atheist (Lange even got the award from Moscow film festival). I really enjoy this movie and then watched all her highly acclaimed movies (even found this little film 'Country').
Lange is so divine. One of the best. Her characters are very complicated. She tries to find roles that give her 'something to do'. I still believe she has a lot to say and win the 3d Oscar.
i could listen to your knowledge of hollywood for hours on end 🤩
Same! This channel is amazing. 🤩🤩🤩
I just wanted to express how much I love Jessica Lange. I love All That Jazz and I am thankful I was able to meet her a few years ago. She was very kind and thoughtful towards me.
Thank you for posting this your channel is a pure source of joy.
LOVE your content!
I swear, each of your episodes hum with so much style and substance, it’s unreal.
No matter the subject or theme, they are all precise, educational, thought-provoking, and insightful - not to mention lean and mean (no fat whatsoever).
You manage to pack so much light and heat into them, the effect on your viewers is that of pure stimulation - a starburst for the mind.
This must be partly due to not adhering to a strict and rigid schedule... nothing in your content feels obligatory... each episode feels like a passion piece unto itself, afforded its own loving care and attention.
Keep up the great work!
Spot on the similarities between 1994 and 2019 races. Also, it's remarkable to mention (Like 2019), there were performances to consideration but these came as too foreign, too edgy or too small (Irene Jacob - Three Colours: Red; Judy Davis - The Ref; Jennifer Jason Leigh; Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle; Isabelle Adjani - The Queen Margot) and the ineligible critical acclaimed performance (Linda Fiorentino - The Last Seduction for HBO release). As happened this year with Awkwafina, Lupita Nyong'o, Alfre Woodard, Elisabeth Moss and Jessie Buckley.
jibrilleo yes Winona Ryder being called the rising Hollywood it girl that will get more Oscars in the future echos the same sentiment the media was doing for both Cynthia Erivo and Saoirse Ronan this year it’s so ironic how 25 years later and things just don’t change
Linda Fiornetino was a badass in The Last Seduction!
I admire how effortlessly Jessica Lange hits her Mark! She's a master of her own craft.
I've been waiting for the Jessica Lange vid for a while!
I feel like the question mark next to joan crawford's age adds another layer to the video. Well done 👍🏻
Not to defend Tootsie, but I feel like I should clarify part of what you said: It's not just that Dustin Hoffman's character can't get work as an actor- it's that he's such an asshole, no one will work with him. Now the rest of the plot....
Good point.
Excellent point. He's a nightmare. (And actors like that are everywhere!)
That's exactly right
The way i RAN to watch this! You're one of my favorite channels on yt.
PS i would love if you do a 'Parasite' winning BP video. I know this channel is focused on women and the oscars, but i think and historical win like this deserves a video.
I absolutely love your videos and re-watch them possibly tens of times. Would you ever consider looking into the Supporting Actress category? I just get anxious when i think there are a limited number of Best Actress videos you can make :))
Liked before I even started watching it, because I know its going to be good plus JESSICA LANGE!!!
I've always been such a fan of Lange's! Seeing her reemergence in AHS and Feud was wonderful, and she (mostly) knocks it out of the park.
What is this?! *_Knotty pine???_*
I felt that.
This was an absolutely amazing year for film but sadly female roles that reached mainstream prominence or weren't just sub par were few and far in between. Compared to the Oscars, the female categories of the Emmys are always extremely tough and full of brilliant performances. This might be why talented actresses like Nicole Kidman, Amy Adams, Jessica Lange or Cate Blanchett are exploring the world of television.
i do not understand where you are coming from, i am sorry. it was a good year for cinema and, as always, i saw GREAT performances from actresses. the wrong person won and the best people weren't nominated - that is the problem. what stings me the most is how hard florence got ignored for midsommar and both/either jennifer lopez and constance wu deserved a nom for their performances in hustlers - another criminally underrated film. it is fine if you disagree with my picks, i get that. but i do not think there was any shortage of good roles and performances in 2019.
oof I agree! There were great women in great roles but the academy ignored them, and I think we know why.
I admit the roles for women in television are much more juicer now than in movies. Shows like Fleabag, Mrs. Maisel, Killing Eve, Handmaid’s Tale, OITNB, The Crown, Big Little Lies, Veep, etc. have fantastic female leads!
Maliha Intikhab Exactly. You hardly see Reese Witherspoon in films. Now she’s working on her third television series
@@oof-wi7hp Renee deserved the Oscar she gave an amazing performance as Judy and in a way, by awarding her for portraying Judy they are awarding Judy.

You mised the fact that Meryl wanted the role of Dwan, but Dino said Meryl was too ugly. See the Graham Norton Show.
Javier Enrique Albisurez I wonder what would’ve happened if she had gotten the role. I don’t think we would’ve ever heard of Jessica Lange.

She has always been so mysterious, beautiful, and a great actress to me. Its hard to take your eyes off her. Including her stint on AHS.
At timestamp 19:15 I think you make a small arithmetic mistake, when you say, "15 years later," while it seems you mean to compare 1995 with the present day... 25 years later, right?
I love your videos! Just trying to be helpful! :-)
Richard Truncellito You’re cute :)
Thank you for this insightful video! As a 50 year old woman, and a singer, I find it increasingly difficult to get jobs, and see this double standard you refer to (comparing Paul Newman at 69, with his sexual allure still apparently in tact, and Lang or Sarandon at about 45 as needing to figure out how to remain sexy through menopause!) The very messed up thing though about this is that I noitice I myself observing the women around me (for example on the subway, or at an audition) and already mentally "writing off" the older, "less attractive" or perhaps heavier ones. At the same time, this general viewpoint that woman after a certain age are no longer valuable is one that I intensly dislike. I believe this is an attitude that is unfortunately so ingrained in this society that, like other bad habits and attitudes, it will take much time to pass. Maybe the next generation?
@Laura Streeter I'll check it out, thanks for the link.
"Knotty pine?!" lmao
Thank you so much! This was another great video, you are amazing! I really love Jessica so I enjoyed It a lot! Then I’d like to say that I’m so sad Winona never got an Oscar and probably never will... she is so talented and too underrated!!
Auro 82 the crazy thing is Winona didn’t get nominated for her best performances (reality bites, heathers, Edward Scissorhands, girl interrupted)
Malcolm 1097 I totally agree!! I watched all the movies you mentioned and I thought she was extraordinary in all of them, especially in Girl, interrupted. Her performance as Susanna Kaysen is probably one of the most underrated performances ever, to me she was breathtaking in that movie, she really touched me. She deserved some recognition for sure!
I would love, love, LOVE an analysis of Angela Lansbury's nominations/career, and why she's never gotten a competitive Oscar.
Maureen O'Hara too.
There's a really good interview that was on TCM by Robert Osborne. It is broken up into six parts here on UA-cam. Here is the first part. ua-cam.com/video/ZlceRLCfoxU/v-deo.html. You should be able to find it as a playlist. In the Part 4 she discusses losing the Oscar and how that affected her personal life as well as her career.
Lange is a fascinating actress because she's got some kind of underlying darkness to her, which Streep lacks. Jessica's acting is just more thrilling to watch, like sky before the storm, whereas Meryl's is a masterful display, a fine symphony with every note top notch. They're both amazing actresses, along with Glenn Close, the best American actresses of their generation.
And not to mention Black women as a whole are not even discussed in this video because the academy rarely acknowledges their existence. It's sad that many people watching this video silently add "white" in front of women every time it's spoken. Spike Lee's movie Crooklyn was released in 1994. In black circles, it is iconic. The great Alfre Woodard's performance could've been considered Best Lead or Best Supporting, but it wasn't even a thought. Her last nomination was in 1984, yet the Academy is worried about poor Jessica Lange, already nominated 5 times prior to Blue Sky, winning 1 of those nominations. The plight of Black Artists worldwide.
Thank you
You're absolutely right! By not being explicit, I narrowed my scope too much here. (Alfre should have won this year too...)
@@bkrewind Not just the black, every POC actress has been in disadvantage. Just this year has the potential to bring Asians, Latino and Black people in the same ceremony and they ignored that.
Barry Moton yes crooklyn is my movie I know it from start to finish Alfre Woodard deserves better for that film
I get what you mean, but I watch videos from this channel a lot and she’s always calling out the erasure of Black people, particularly Black women in film.
I am mad with joy! I value your contribution to UA-cam film criticism!
0:27 that is particularly funny given that Renée looks A LOT like Jessica in the Netflix series "What/If"
I'm really looking forward to the episode on Marlee Matlin. Thank you for all your wonderful work!
I was just rewatching your videos!! Obsessed with your channel! The work you put into your videos is inspiring.
I've been attracted to Jessica Lange since I watched AHS. I really want her to win another Oscar! Hope Ryan Murphy produces a movie for her!
Another great vid. I'd love to see one about the year Helen Hunt won. I'm sure you have lots to say about that.
hollywood: *doesnt write, produce, direct or campaign for female roles*
also hollywood: its such a shame that there are no outstanding female performances
The way you laid out jessica lange's career was so compelling to watch, it's always really fascinating to see you break down an actor's career and the way they changed and evolved as time went on
Grace and Frankie is the show that made me feel like I could age. I'm only 22, but have spent the majority of my life thinking I'd die young, so pair that with society's outlook on older women and you get my inability to even picture it. Thinking of my instability and relative loneliness as life-long felt so hopeless because I didn't have anything to reference.
WHAT A LEGEND! i never knew her career was so rich with range and roles :o
YES! I'm so glad you did one on her. She's one of a kind, and I think she could have been great in theatre had her voice not been so soft (she got awful reviews for that). Her repeated comebacks was amazing and really give me hope - you never know what's around the bend (a big reason why I read so many biographies and autobiographies). Blue Sky is on my top 10 list, and I am SO GLAD it got found again, and whatever happened, she got back on track thanks to whoever ressurected it. She's lived through a lot, and I admire her. I love what Jack Nicholson (ew) said about her: "She's Bambi crossed with a Buick."
And also, almost all "mental illness" is trauma-based. I wish "mental illness" in everything was replaced with "trauma symptoms" or "complex trauma." The research shows it and has for decades; the general pubic is extremely slow to catch up.
I love your videos, and if I may add a comment that I hope doesn't come across as ungrateful. The video felt maybe 50% focused on the topic of older actresses not getting the roles and opportunities that they deserve -- I mean, look at Huppert! I wish actors like Viola Davis and Amy Adams (when will she be recognized?!) could have that opportunity! -- and 50% on Lange. It felt like a smooth move to talk about women's inequality in film (esp. older women) slipped into a video, and I always appreciate you addressing this topic.
I realize the video is Titled "Jessica Lange: from Kong to Blue Sky | 1995" and also I think it may have helped to explore some of Lange's early life (why she is fascinated with "madness"). Her early influence of growing up with a harsh father that she felt she had to impress, running away to be a mime (!) in Paris after dropping out of college and the influence on her of living overseas, but you titled the video perfectly and made a vid that fit the title. Her later work with Ryan Murphy, and as his muse, and on how her comeback happened would be fascinating. You would knock a Ryan Murphy video out of the park bc I think he has a very complicated relationships with women, and you seem like someone who would address that very astutely.
I think this might be my favorite one yet, not only because Jessica Lange is one of my favorite actresses, but also because of the way you use her story to explore sexism and ageism in Hollywood. Beautifully done. I don't know if you have any ideas yet for your next video, but can I suggest taking a look at either Kathy Bates's win for Misery or Hilary Swank's win for Million Dollar Baby?
For Bates, you could explore the relationship between the Academy and genre (i.e. horror, sci-fi, comic-book) films and why she's one of the few people to receive an acting nomination for such a movie and I think maybe the only person to win Best Actress for one (?). I think it's also timely since Joaquin Phoenix literally just won the Best Actor Oscar for playing the Joker (and Kathy Bates was actually one of the people who praised his performance early on, claiming that he needed to at least be nominated).
For Swank, I guess either of her Best Actress wins would do but I'd suggest looking at her latter win to explore how she went from Beverly Hills 90210 guest star to two-time Oscar winner in such a short amount of time. And also maybe touch on why after that, her star sort of fell significantly and hasn't done much since.
@19:15 I really feel old right now. Because it's actually 25 years later than 1995, not 15 years later. :(
Great video, by the way!
LMAO...I...thankfully do not have a job that requires a lot of math oops...
@@bkrewind Hahahaha don't worry thank God you don't and we can appreciate you in this field, in which you are magnificent 🤗....Keep up the good work!
Be Kind Rewind I don’t think anyone would blame you for that one- I’m consistently thinking the 90s were only 10 years ago. And then I remember, and I feel old.
One of Lange's best roles in my opinion was a supporting role in 1994s Rob Roy. She plays the strong wife of Rob who is raped by his English enemy. She played the trauma and bravery of enduring the honor seeking violence of the men around her unbelievably great. She was excellent in this role, and like you mentioned in the video it played to her style and strengths as an actress. Check it out.
Omg feud was underrated!!! I loooove Lange. She’s soooo talented. Watching her act is a joy you know she’s in her element
I only will say: She's a GREAT actress!
I am obsessed with your channel. So good and so well done and well told. Don't ever stop
One thing that stood out to me about the conversation of how hard it is to find women to fill the best actress category, in addition to everything you said about there being fewer opportunities, it how many of those performances get overlooked completely both because of the issues facing women in Hollywood, and the narrow scope of what's considered an "Oscar picture". In 1994, You had Kathleen Turner in Serial Mom (my personal pick), Juliette Lewis in Natural Born Killers, Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies, Andie McDowell in Four Weddings and a Funeral, etc. Who did great work, but not in the right kind of movies.
Something else that hasn't changed, or at least not enough, in the 25 years since.
I love all that jazz and I am so glad that you talked about it! One of the best movies of all time!
"Andy Serkis would never" RESPECT FOR OUR CGI KING
I love how much info and historical context you put into your videos along with your own comments. My view of hollywood completely reforms each time I see your videos.
The editing starting on 10:15. I love your content, thank you.
When I saw a new video from the channel I just smiled!
I seriouslly get so freaking excited everytime you upload a video. Much anticipated and much appreciated. THANK YOU for making excellent UA-cam content. ❤️
I must say as a young boy I loved Jessica Lange in King Kong, I may not have had any sexuality at that age, but I loved her glamour and looks - however heightened the film made them - By the time I was 19 and watched Frances Farmer, it was the depth of that performance, the darkness of humanity which enthralled me, also still, her looks captivated me. At 35 watching Blue Sky, I was overwhelmed by her ability to vanish into this woman who seemed to be close to erupting at any moment, but again, the way she looks, that face, those bones, that 'it' that she has. And now, AHS, every time she is on screen, I am more alert, more excited, just deliciously soaking up every movement, that face, every wrinkle in her skin, a work of art to me. A face like art to my eye, and some are truly captivating whether good, bad or ugly. What a person Jessica is and how lucky we have been to enjoy her interpretations on screen.
I came for the Jessica Lange and stayed for the excellent analysis. Really well done, thank you.
Yay! You featured Ms. Lange. My favorite actress.
Thank you so much for making this, I literally squealed when I read the title!
Sinjin Smyth both
I would love to see a video over Reese Witherspoons’s win in Walk the Line. At the time I thought it was well deserved, but now I don’t think she deserved it.
I absolutely love your videos, every single one of them. Your actresses' series, too, is brilliant! I would love to see one on Britain's most acclaimed and beloved screen queens: Keeley Hawes. :)
i’m a dude who watches your channel and i’d like to comment just to thank you for the work you do here. you do a lot of research and construct an easy-to-follow narrative out of facts, history, numbers, interviews, filmographies, reviews, essays, articles...and often from many different years and perspectives. you put a lot of goddamn work into these videos. Thank you for it. I am so grateful for it.
i’m gonna become a patron
The funny thing is that they rejected Meryl for the Kong part. Good for her. Jessica worked tooth and nail to be seen as a serious actress. I kind of wish she'd won for Frances but goddamn that was Meryl's year through and through.
Jessica Lange should've won for Frances, she was much better than Meryl Streep in Sophie's choice, Streep is a much overrated actrice in an, for me, annoying movie.
Sunflower 100 you don’t put someone down to uplift another person sorry not sorry like the person said above it was Meryl year, her performance in Sophie choice has been regarded one of the greatest masterclass acting in world cinema history
I just want to say, your channel means so much to me. I am also a huge fan of film, a bit of a fanatic, and a woman, and it has always bummed me out that we never really get to dig into women’s stories and lives and perspective. We can’t have TWO women centric movies nominated at the oscars?????? That’s crazy!!!!!!!!!!!! Your channel and channels like The Take make me feel so seen as a woman absolutely obsessed with film and the art women bring and have brought to film the entire time! The women in classic film are incredible artists and should be seen as such! I always look forward to your videos, and learning even more about the politics that go into Oscar season, which is just such a deliciously interesting topic to dig into. Cause for women, there is just so so much behind the scenes that goes into who wins that category.
One of my favorite channels on UA-cam. Also, if Glenn was nominated this year instead of last year, she would have won.
Again another great film commentary from ‘Be Kind Rewind,’ this time focusing on the career of Jessica Lange. Interesting parallel pointed out between 1995 and 2020’s Best Actress race both involving remakes of LITTLE WOMEN and actresses (Renée Zellweger & Jessica Lange) whose careers were both revived by a specific role leading to their Oscar wins.
BLUE SKY was kept in a studio vault for almost five years because ORION had gone into bankruptcy. Shot in 1989/90 but released in Sept. 1994 little was thought of its chances at success. Amy Locane was a little girl in BLUE SKY but five years later was playing the ‘resident sex pot’ on TVs MELROSE PLACE. This gives one an idea of how people’s careers and lives had changed in the interim.
THE LONG WALK HOME, perhaps Whoopi Goldberg’s finest performance was also caught in the ORION ‘debacle.’ When GHOST became a major blockbuster, ORION decided to finally release the film. If you haven’t seen it I strongly recommend this magnificent film despite it never having caught on. Sissy Spacek also stars in this civil rights drama, giving a wonderful performance.
FYI Meryl Streep was also auditioned for KING KONG but Dino de Laurentiis, the film’s producer, found her unattractive. Expressing his feelings in Italian while Meryl was present, he didn’t realize she spoke the language. She responded to him in kind. Ms. Streep never worked for Mr. de Laurentiis from that point forward, though it hardly made any difference to her career.
that incredible opening is one of the many reasons i continue to love this channel. yeesh, the academy is predictable sometimes. although that having been said, this year's oscars is the first i remember seeing in which every award actually went to people and films that deserved them. i'm hoping parasite's win will kickstart some much need representation for international winners and winners of color (especially for the lead acting roles), but honestly, no one seems to really be able to tell if this means progress, or that the pendulum will swing towards another "green book" season next year. fingers crossed for the former, and thank you for your amazing content.
I should've been sleeping already, as I'll have to be at class by 7 am. It's 2:36 around here, but I still chose to watch your video before going to sleep. Your work is THAT kind of amazing.
