- In 2003, 3 of the 5 Best Actress nominees all made films with Miramax. All three had different experiences. In this video I talk about Nicole Kidman's journey to Virginia Woolf in The Hours, how Harvey Weinstein affected the race, and what we can learn from this year today.

Ever notice actresses suffer the pretty girl/ingenue roles in their 20s, then have variety in their 30s, then mom roles and art roles in their 40s, only to have epic supporting roles later? Interesting pattern.
Exactly meanwhile male actors carry into better leading roles the more they age. That's that ageism

I totally agree but awarding such movie is giving more money to such person and as such financing his "lifestyle". It seemed that the more he had money, the more is behaviour worsened, until it blew all over his face. So, no! These projects should be boycotted, and he should not be allowed to work in such environment. Maybe a porn shop or porn film industry will wrk better for him.
@@StephanieTumba It's not just about sex, it's about power. The ability to assert dominance over everyone and everything was the appeal in and of itself for Harvey Weinstein. He CANNOT be allowed ANY sort of power EVER AGAIN.

Salma deserved better, I feel a lot people in Hollywood tended to down play her talent because she was attractive which is sad.
Agreed and also she's as a Latina is a minority. Women of color in the film industry are always disrespected when a lot of them are very hard working and extremely talented actresses in Hollywood

While Salma never got that type recognition, as she said they wanted her to play maids or remain a actress for the Latin audience. The only way she could get work in Hollywood without portraying the stereotypical “Latina woman” was playing the sex kitten. And this also played a part in her race.

Do you ever wonder that the reason why amazing actors who are also smart and good people (first ones to come to mind are Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams) never win oscars ? Because they refuse to cooperate with the Hollywood engine?
@Madeleine Grayson that's not true. there are studios and directors (spielberg and hanks come to mind) that don't do that. but miramax was a force. harvey's marketing campaigns won oscars. and he didn't just take you off all his movies. he badmouthed you to others. so a lot of the ones that turned him down, did so artfully.

Salma Hayek's story about working with Weinstein during Frida infuriated me. Hopefully, we won't have to talk about this monster anymore in the near future and he'll be an ugly memory of the past.
sabrina joon We have to remember him, so it doesn’t happen again. Remember that Weinstein is just one person. But he’s the symptom of the larger systematic problem. And when we treat this as one person who has to go away, we minimize the scale of the problem. Never forget Harvey Weinstein.

I feel bad for Salma too. At least Paltrow walked away with an Oscar after suffering Harvey's abusive behaviour. Salma walked home empty handed and hasn't landed an Oscar worthy part in years
Fun fact: Natalie Portman mentioned when she and Nicole Kidman were promoting COLD MOUNTAIN, Kidman gave her the advice to choose projects based on the director because even if the film flops, you're guaranteed an interesting experience. Video of this is from the 2010 Hollywood Reporter roundtable discussion. That advice is evident in Kidman's choices as an actress as it's highlighted near the end.

Jettt Angel oh please. She didn’t know he was a predator because he didn’t go after her. He went after young naive ingenues without power and he used his assistants to secure the women he wanted to abuse. People knew. But plenty of people would have no idea. Streep worked on projects with him but she didn’t work for the studio. She was already an incredibly well regarded actress before ever working with Miramax. She was busy with her own career and simply saw him as a successful producer she worked with that made great movies. She was right. She didn’t know he was a monster because he hid it fairly well. Just like Cosby. There is no “them.” Hollywood is a massive industry with all kind of people from all walks of life. There is corruption and gross people and monsters - but that is true of EVERY industry. Name me an industry that hasn’t experienced sexual assault or harassment? Women experience it everywhere. It’s not “the Illuminati.” It’s men doing to women and children what they’ve done since time immemorial. Lord - read about Ancient Rome. Sexual abuse is as old as time. And yes - it’s almost always men.
There’s no “illluminati”. But there sure as hell are a lot of old rich guys protecting old rich guys even when they are monsters. On both sides of politics. In every industry. In every religion.
The issue is always the same. Men seeking power and dominion by any means necessary.
But sure / blame Meryl Streep.
Instead of the bigger issue. Why are men so predisposed to sexual assault and violence and homicide?
And how long do we go on allowing it?
Women have had enough.
And are fighting back.

@@sahib5 As a woman, I should be flattered at how fiercely you're protecting our "innocence" but we're human beings, we have our own motives and agenda and as hard as it is to fathom, women can be just as evil as men. Not assuming that she knew about what was going on but just saying in general, being a sexual predator is bad but turning a blind eye to one (especially when it doesn't affect you personally but you see it happening) is worse. @@DeepScreenAnalysis I read her book though. It's more complicated than that. Women often have to forigve their attackers to free themselves, but she still says what was done to her was horrible. But the experience of being a famous rape victim in this country is horrible and the many ways that people judged her was horrible. Tarantino saying that "she was down for it" was quite jarring. I've never looked at him the same. I pretty much think he's a pedophile now.

I'd love a video about Michelle Pfeiffer...she's a brilliant actress and she constantly receives good reviews in whatever she's in (even when the movie isn't particularly that great), but it's almost like she's both widely acclaimed and underrated/underestimated at the same time, despite her three Oscar nominations.

Frida is a magnificent movie.
Selma was fantastic in Frida. She really put her all into the role.
As a Mexican-American, "Frida" has a special place in my heart. Great soundtrack, great actors, great cinematography. It pained me that Salma suffered so much for a movie that was somewhat overlooked. But it's one of my favorite movies ever, I hope that counts for something.
She was absolutely robbed. That movie is visually beautiful as well as well-acted and heart wrenching. You definitely have to see it.

I always found it fascinating that once Nicole and Tom divorced that her career took off. She has continued to give best performances while Tom went to action movies and not serious film roles. I felt Nicole should’ve won the Oscar the year before for MOULIN ROUGE and still take home the award again for THE HOURS. I love THE HOURS and you feel for Virginia and Kidman EARNED this Oscar.
Tom Cruise basically plays the same role in almost every movie he's in - the man who single-handedly saves the world. Born on the 4th of July and his supporting role are outliers.

Can you do a video on Jennifer Lawrence or Emma Stone wins? Their performances were good , but nothing spectacular ,I don't even know how both of them got nominated.
Really simple. Both were starlets in BP nominees (In case of Stone, she won the Volpi Cup at Venice and La La Land was the frontrunner -which validated Stone's performance-). That equation always work in Best Actress. As Gwyneth Paltrow, Audrey Hepburn, Janet Gaynor, Grace Kelly and Julie Christie before them. Never underestimate starlets in this category
I think Jennifer Lawrence's win for Silver Linings Playbook would make for an interesting video. Personally, nothing about the performance struck me as great, much like the rest of the movie so her victory came as a weird surprise. It seemed like rewarding an "It Girl" for doing something beyond what she was most famous for.

I found it hilarious that she won for Silver Linings Playbook. I knew nothing about Weinstein as a young guy back then and I am usually fine with anyone winning, but that really incited me and I never stopped arguing that she should never have been even nominated for most of her movies.

I think Nicole elevated the performance in The Hours, because the physical transformation freed her up artistically. She wanted viewers to see her (Virginia) and see past Nicole's physical beauty. She did a wonderful job, well deserved Oscar.
Nicole Kidman has reinvented herself so many times in her career!! One of the most versatile actors of our generation. It's a shame that the Hours was produced by Miramax, as a 90s kid, it was one of the very first serious contemporary Hollywood movies I saw and it completely blew my mind.

I have such a tremendous respect for Salma Hayek for her courage, resilience and perseverance. I feel like the emotional toll of having your passion project dangled in the front of you as Frida was done to her, is such next level abuse. this man really abused her in so many ways.

Dogville was a collaboration of a lot of great acting... combined w artful filming and a brilliant script/dialogue.
Yes. It is a masterpiece. The tone, pacing and narration... and ultimately the MESSAGE are all laudable, glorious pieces to an intricate artistic puzzle.
But Kidman, while wonderful in her role, did not carry the film. It was everyone involved (in front/behind the scenes) that made that film utterly brilliant 😎✌💜💙💚💛🧡

Yes! She's one of my faves! I think her media persona, acting (Gia, Girl Interrupted as personal faves) and fan base with both older and newer (thanks to iconic images via Tumblr, and Millennial/Gen Z fandom) audiences make her an interesting figure, amid the controversies and scope of her celebrity. I really hope she nabs those Cleopatra* and Bride of Frankenstein roles, those along with Maleficient, and The Eternals would bring back the full force of 2000s Baddie Angie, and I miss her! *Cleopatra is said to have been of Greek Ancestry, and wasn't a WOC therefore I'm fine with a white woman playing her, and I think Angie is a better choice over Gaga, esp since Angelina has been wanting to play her for years.
She has only done Best Acress nominees so far not supporting which is the category she won in (and if she plans to do all Best Actress winners this will take a while to get to supporting). However she was nominated in 2008 for Changeling when Kate Winslet won so Angelina will be mentioned then.

Aside from Marvel, Jolie seems to be one of those actors/actresses that intends to make the switch to directing, so while I thought she was great in Changeling (though I would have also loved to see Scarlett Johansson in the role since she was apparently Clint Eastwood’s first choice), I don’t think she’s going to be nominated for acting any time soon.

For me there was a specific time when I realised everyone was taking Nicole Kidman seriously as an actress.
On the 'Eyes Wide Shut' DVD, it included interviews with Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg, mostly talking about Stanley Kubrick and most of which were edited into documentaries about Kubrick following his death. But with Kidman, the interviewer asked specific questions about scenes and her acting choices in the film.
While we do have shows like 'Inside the Actor's Studio' and all, this was on a special features section of a DVD, and kind of came out of nowhere since similar questions were not asked (or at least included on the DVD) of Cruise and Spielberg.
I do wonder why these questions asked to Kidman were included in the DVD, but seeing them there is a good thing, and it was the time I realised that everyone was taking Kidman seriously as an actress.

True that was the same year Julia Roberts was nominated for pretty woman and she was rising as a huge movie star. The oscars have a tendency to give the It Girl with a potential future the award like they did with Audrey Hepburn, Luis Rainer, grace kelly, Meryl Streep, barbra Streisand, gwenyth Paltrow, Emma stone and Jennifer Lawrence but they surpringly scrapped that practice and gave it to a talented vertan who truly gave a tour de force legendary performance.
I would love to see that video. I think you could see it on her face when she won that she didn't think she had a chance. Her performance in Misery is just incredible. She's never buckled to try and be the 'It Girl' and I have so much respect for her.
I think even Bates said that she was stunned when she won, because of the fierce competition that year.

Salma Hayek would have been perfect for the role of Alicia Lardé Nash in "A Beautiful Mind" which was made a little before Frida. Ron Howard decided to Anglicize the character (the real Alicia was Salvadoran) and give the role to Jennifer Connelly, who ended up winning the Supporting Actress Oscar. How great it would have been to see Hayek winning for that role, playing another brilliant, strong Latina.

Just found this channel and I'm astounded by the quality and the amount of research you do for your videos!
If y'all haven't seen Boy Erased, it is well worth checking out. Nicole Kidman is WONDERFUL in it, and honestly her character arc is arguably the most interesting thing about it, as a mother and wife of a baptist preacher who chooses her gay son over her church and saves him from conversion therapy. Very powerful and very touching.

It's a fine movie with a certain tonal dissonance, but her performance is impeccable. That her character arc is the most interesting thing about it is just strange. Of the two gay conversion therapy movies of last year, The Miseducation of Cameron Post is the far superior, I'm sad it didn't really get attention at all.
It was mediocre. This is a movie I thought I would be moved by but I wasn't. It was sterile and not that great. Nicole didn't do anything to warrant such a praise.
@@jonykaa739 I saw both movies the same night and while Cameron Post was more entertaining I think - both films weren't anything special, as a matter of fact I found them to be incredibly similar that I wondered if it had the same writer. Both of course about gay conversion therapies but I thought they would be totally different but weren't.

Yess, The Hours is one of my favorite movies. The acting, particularly Nicole Kidman and Ed Harris, and Phillip Glass' score is amazing.
First time I've seen something from your channel. So refreshing to see a report on Hollywood and celebrities that is intelligent and not at all trashy. Thank you for adding integrity to a business that is often lacking scruples.
I personally don't understand how you can separate a person from what they do. Even if it's a creatively good thing. Perhaps a Miramax film did well in spite of Weinstein, not because of him. There are a lot of people involved in making a film. He might be the boss and his opinion carries a great amount of weight. But he's still only one person in the hundreds who create the film.

That actually did happen. But I understand what Hayek was trying to say. Because her experience was different.
Hayek was told she would only get jobs exclusively for her looks. She faced discrimination for being Hispanic/Latina, but ultimately her talent was mocked just because she's "easy on the eyes".
I know what she meant when she said she didn't want to be hired based on a quota. It's because she feels like her talent is more than enough to get her roles and that Hollywood should acknowledge that.
The struggle of African American/Black actresses is a little different, those ladies feel like they don't get roles period (Understandably so!!). There has to be a quota to ensure they're treated fairly, that just because some guy like Weinstein, who clearly prefers light skinned actresses (Even when they're people of color), doesn't get his way where only actresses his racist behind wanted to harass were getting work.
SH would understandably get angry every time someone insinuates that she got roles because of a quota, because she had to deal with so much crap regrading who she was in order to be taken seriously. It's definitely going to remind her of all the sexual harassment she got from HV who tell her to her face that "she's just a body". I understand where both women came from, and I don't think Hayek meant to down play Jessica William's struggles, it's definitely coming from her personal experience where she thinks "if someone says I am not talented one more time!!".

All the three other categories have so much coverage and i also always thought that supporting actress was the weakest of the fourth acting categories where i find it hard to find performances that i would call truly great. I love all the acting categories.
Each has a weird reputation. I'm not sure if Supporting Actress necessarily gets less coverage than the others. Meanwhile, the Lead categories get high coverage because celebrity status. Personally, Supporting Actor might be my favorite because it feels like the most contentious award of them all.
Viola Davis in Fences was a revelation but like Denzel, she won the Tony for it!
