I lived in Hamilton a long time ago. Worked at Westinghouse on Aberdeen Street, worked at national steel car, worked at dofasco and stelco. I like stelco best. I heard that Hamilton got rid of the trolleybuses. That was one of my favorite things about Hamilton. I'd like to go back and see the place, especially the places where I lived. I do miss it though.
I've lived in Hamilton for 49 year's. .worked In both steel company's , also worked for a few sub contractors that did work there also. There all gone now. it's sad!
Amazing! Can't believe how much this city has changed
Look at the manufacturing we have lost !!!
thanks to globalization and outsourcing
Automation, development of industrial sector in other jurisdictions etc.
Good riddance. It has left the waterfront a toxic waste dump. Time for Hamilton to move on.
Dofasco is still there. Now Arcellor-Mittal, but it's still the largest employer in Hamilton. I work right next to it at National Steelcar.
China is the producer of steel now no labor unions will get in there
This is incredible.
My God, the losses.
Love hamilton; God gifted landscape to multiculturalism. A small NY of Canada. Hamilton forever..........
Almost none of these companies exist anymore.
Kinda says all you need to know.
True people have no clue in 40 years most things that were booming are now dead. I see a lot of shiity apartments out of mass condos.
4:57 nice
my home town need to back and visit soon
lol. they make it look so glamour back then. it's nothing like this anymore.
It wasn't like that back then either.
look at all the employers that have vanished!
Hamilton is a donut...a rich outercrust with a hole in the middle
I have to agree with that description
Look at all the people working!!!!
wow now i feel as old as copps coliseum. i was born in 1984 so was a shocker to see it and the sheraton still being built in this video.
I worked at the Mill for a bit. It was awesome seeing it here.
Christopher Strachan I used to walk through that area before it was even there. I remember going to the old Robinson's store at King and James, beside the CIBC building, where the empty parking lot is now. I shook Terry Fox's hand on the York Blvd. bridge when he was running through Hamilton in 1980 -- what an honor !!!
flashy5150 thanks for making me feel young again xD
Christopher Strachan Not a problem, I wish I could though. lol
And of course, Hamilton did get a great team playing in the Copps too. I have to admit, Hamilton having the largest arena in the OHL is pretty cool.
I think I was playing Asteroids on the Atari when this was shot.
Jim Gordon PAC-MAN for me, or maybe Space Invaders.
I think this is the year we got our Vectrex...
Ontario was depressing back in the day, it is depressing now.
no, it was a good place to live
@@k.s.333 and it still is.
They didn't see the writing on the wall. Sad really.
R.I.P
This was 1985. The year copps collisium was being built. Funny haiw almost all the companies have gone.
You can tell how old this video is. The fuzzy orange quality of film, the grainy sound of the commentary and music. Also old time is the male voice and the introductory music.
GREAT vid!
I left with my father in fall of 85 my dad knew it was changing i came home in 97 saw the last of the bigger companies leave this city keeps reinventing itself not always good not always bad
this is kinda cool
NormEatsRice it’s cool but I currently live in Hamilton and it’s nothing like this anymore
I was 19 when they filmed this. Most of those companies are gone now but fortunately new companies have arrived. Hospitals have been built. Condos are going up like crazy. People are finally investing in the city.
I was 7 when this was filmed.
Easy there, big guy.
"Finally investing in the city" was what these companies were doing in 1983.
Heed the warning signs.
Most of the people buying those condos are from Toronto. It's cheaper to live here.
But thanks for bringing gun violence with you.
Keeps me in shape dodging bullets.
Condos don’t pay bills. We need jobs here. I wish I lived during that time. They barely have train service for commuters to Toronto. Blame the politicians they don’t care
look how much more traffic there now is
this is so crazy
4:27 COPPS CONSTRUCTION! GO BULLDOGS!
Chadwicked B they had an NHL team long ago 🤦🏽♂️ it was called Hamilton Tigers
Oskee wee wee
dofasco is still open... for now 🤔
From time to time
Hahaha, this is great.
How many of these companies left Hamilton by the end of the 90's thanks to the late Brian Mulroney?? Hamilton was a growing thriving city and now, well it's a city anyway.
Hamilton is the home of Raymond the writer
THIS THE BEST IN MY PLACE OF MINE HAMILTON ONTARIO CANADA 🇨🇦 AND I KNOW ROOFING ALSO DRYWALLING. HOWS THE WORK OUT THERE FOR JOBS.
Jim Carrey saw Hamilton as a hellhole and was lucky to escape from it.
It is not a hellhole.
I wonder what Barton St. looked like back then...
East, West, or both?
@@airaero5473 East
It looked exactly the same back then as it does today , the only difference is the amount of druggies/hookers and homeless, is that theres a few more out there than there was in the 1980s .
Looks exactly the same, but the buildings are 35 years more decrepit.
@@highenergyog 2020 barton st is dead totally day snd night properties are worthless as is time to expropiate with a bulldozer
I guess you haven't been downwind of the factories!
Remember the peanut oil plant by Eastwood Park?
When the wind blew from the west the stink was incredible.
But we grew used to it and went on playing street hockey.
Love hamilton; God gifted landscape to multiculturalism. A small NY of Canada. Hamilton forever..........
Its Poindexter at 2:12
is this the same Hamilton ????? wth happened got hit in the back of the head with an iron rod
Labor unions killedf industry in canada
Things sure looked different in that day
is why they coined the term..back in the day lol
Hi, I'm working on a documentary set in 1980's Hamilton, and would love to be able to use some of this footage. I tried sending an email to your contact info but have not received a response. Is there a email I could contact about obtaining permission? Thank you.
Can somebody please tell what that building was across the city hall before it was demolished
Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, I believe.
Showing all the good parts. Lol
Is Hamilton Ontario Still a great place to live? 32 years after this video was made?
mctraveller85
No, no, and no
yes yes and yes
No it’s full of white nationalists
No
@@nicsicilia7336 That sucks.
ouuu is that waterfall at 6:30 even in Hamilton? and if so does it exist anymore? I'd love to visit
Yep it is. that looks like albion falls. one of hundreds of waterfalls in hamilton #waterfallcapitcaloftheworld
BuddyLIM thought so! Thanks
Could be Webster's Falls in Dundas, Albion falls is more "stepped" I believe.
looks like webster to me too. but that is one of many beautiful natural waterfalls still going around this great city.
@@BuddyLIM except you can't visit Albion Falls anymore. #ClosedToThePublic
the best part about this city , is we are still better then Toronto . lol
Sure that's why so many people leave Hamilton and move to TO.
Hamilton looked great back then. Right now it’s a shithole due to homelessness, crime, and drugs.
ALL THO$E CUNTPANY'$ LONG GONE , HAMILTOON A GOOD PLACE 4 GORDON $TUCKLE$$ & GTA GANG BANGER$ NOW
lmao these comments
wow ... take a camera to King and James now ...those employers we lost ... lifetime jobs with good pay ... right now there is nowhere to go but up .. i remember those days ... seems classy now
0:28 are you sure about that
Yes.
and then the China came about all the industry gone to hell.
“The armpit of North America”
Then NAFTA happened and bye-bye most of Hamilton's industries.
I hope no one listened to this video back then.
Hamilton has gone to shit. Poverty, higher property tax rates and playing cat n' mouse with druggies for decades doesn't really help, not to mention industry literally leaving like they practically have every other city. Nothing was hit harder than downtown. Some things have come a long way since the dark periods of the mid 90's, but it'll never be close to this again.
Steel City Dude Forever! 420
34 as well, born and raised in Hamilton. Don't get all butthurt with the facts and you obviously haven't read the post in it's entirety. All you saw was "Hamilton has gone to shit". Go back to smoking your drugs.
Steel City Dude Forever! 420
Shouldn't you be more calmer than this because of your drugs? Or is it because you're just a complete degenerate?
just cleaning up the mess the money-hungry generations before us made. not sure if that includes you, but judging by the way you speak you aren`t even aware of the difference that can be made if you actually shut your mouth and contribute.
em mcg
Right, don't criticize what the city became and point out the issue. Got'cha.
Listen, I'm 18 years old and I've known about the many issues Hamilton faces for A LONG TIME. I'm very educated for my age because I've chosen to follow the work of a lot of people who are trying to help Hamilton. I don't waste my time saying "Hamilton has gone to shit", because it makes people think that it's a lost cause. I spend my time trying to improve my town rather than complaining about it. You are what they call a "bystander." Just continue waiting for other people to help your neighbours, and in the process of it, keep complaining! It's REALLY helpful!
Back when Canada was a real country! MCGA!
It still is a real and great country.
omg, hamilton still look exactly the same
No it does not you idiot
Hamilton has gone to shit since this video
Say thanks to China...
Trump's fault.
Housing no longer affordable. Unrecognizable demographic, horrible municipal government, industry gone, vacant shops all along the downtown core. The old downtown is basically a ghetto. Still a great place to live though.
Now it's GM..
