Great video and tutorial Marc. Were you using 3/8oz jig in the inlet as well? What size do you go up to when the current is running hard, say on a moon tide?
csralumni thanks! I was using up to 3/4 oz in the inlet. I usually don’t fish there in the middle of the tides or when the current is outrageous. But if it’s screaming you can possibly try a chicken rig with a heavier sinker.

Why do you bleed the fluke?
Better flavor, better color for raw prep. With fluke it's mostly about the presentation, other species it can drastically improve flavor and keep them fresh longer.

@@SurvivorDiet Definitely had some fluke that weren't bled next to bled out fish. As mentioned, with fluke it's more about color and presentation in raw preparations, the difference esp in cooked dishes is small. With other species (bluefish probably the most obvious, but porgies/stripers too) the difference can be dramatic. Blood is considered universally a negative when it comes to storing and in some cases aging meat. From fish to pigs to chickens...you want to drain as much blood as possible. If you can't tell the difference or can't be bothered to bleed, by all means chuck em in the cooler and keep fishing!

Is there a certain time of the year when fluke stay more in the bay then ocean? Like in the early season are they more prone to be by the Oceanside?
Generally it's early season bay, mid-later season ocean, but there are exceptions.

Not sure about MA, but I would start with anywhere there is saltwater access. Deep water close by is always nice.

Just to bleed them out. Bled out fish will keep fresher and taste better, and in raw preparations look better as well.
blood becomes deoxygenated bcuz fish is out of water, no more oxygen , anaerobic metabolism and acidosis occurs. it ruins the meat amd taste..bleed them out fast and put on ice QUICKLY to preserve freshness....

How long do you let the jig touch the bottom on the pause? I’ve been trying to work on my retrieve but I’ve been getting mostly sea robins hitting my bucktails.

Start your pops/bounces again as soon as the jig lands on bottom. Usually a sea robin bite feels very different from a fluke bite...I often just pull the jig out of a searobin's mouth w/o setting the hook lol...they are not very smart fish.
Thanks Leon! From my experience the slower the presentation, the higher the chance of a robin taking your offering. This includes sluggish retrieves and prolonged pauses after the jig hits the bottom. However, If you're fishing an area that's loaded with robins you may not be able to avoid them.
@@CookingandFishing That's my biggest problem right now. I have trouble knowing when my jig hits bottom, especially with wind. Is that probably due to using a cheap fiberglass rod or something else?

@@idkwhattouseforname fiberglass rod doesn't help, but I would do this: Start with a heavier jig...say 1oz+. That way you know exactly when you're on the bottom. Progressively go lighter. When you get to the lightest end of the spectrum...equipment definitely matters. Also watching your line. Wind is always tough, I tend to keep my rod low to the water when the wind is blowing: jig jig jig then bring the rod tip down while it falls, just to keep my braid out of the wind. Anyway, like most things worth doing...it takes practice and time on the water!
Some good nuggets. Do you think the fluke are hitting better on jerkshads because they're getting wise to grubs/swimming mullets?
TwoPoundTest I’m not totally sure! My cousin wanted me to use them for the early season since it’s action is geared more towards triggering reaction strikes from sluggish fish. And this success carried on through the middle of the season. But you can see in the video I was using the 5” grubs as well and did just fine. We are working on a video explaining the differences between the two. Stay tuned!
Can't be good flopping know shorts onto grass and pavement to toss back.. Taking slime off the fish is no good. And also not saying you do this but alot of vids you see guys squeezing gills tightly to unhook. I'm sure those thumb indentations ain't helping survival. . As light as you can and still being able to control the fish for a unhook job is best practice , without a rag or on pavement. If you only catch a few fish per year I get it, you just don't have a technique down. But if you consistently catch fluke this practice should come easy.
