    When I was learning to quilt my grandma and my great aunt Leona taught me to put all of the fabric I wished to use in the quilt on a side table in the living room, that got good light, for a week and any fabrics that I noticed during the week were ones that clashed with the group and had to be removed/switched out (or later on I learned I could find a “bridge” fabric to add) and of course once a new fabric is added the 7 days started over. As a kid it was a frustrating process because I just wanted to make a quilt…but as an adult this is a process that makes me feel connected with my family. And I find when I skip this step I don’t like the color harmony of the final quilt. And on the quilts I do use this technique on I always get compliments

      Corey, I love this story and the legacy you have learning from your grandma and great aunt on how to curate fabrics for your quilts! ❤️ Thank you so much for sharing it! I'm sure that I'd share the frustration you had as a kid---and yet the wisdom behind that method is undeniable. As they say, the proof is in the pudding! 😘

    Speaking of youngins not understanding “hang up” the phone, I lived in rural Kentucky and we had a PARTY LINE PHONE!! For those who don’t know, that means all 7ish homes on our gravel lane, shared the same phone line. We each had a different phone number and you didn’t hear the neighbors phone ring, but if you wanted to call, when you picked up the phone to dial, if someone else on the lane was on their phone, you could hear and talk (the first 3 way calls?!?!) to them, but you had to wait until they hung up to use your phone. If you were extremely gentle AND your house was quiet, you could listen in without them knowing. This was NOT ideal for a young middle schooler! And we had several preteens on the lane and it didn’t make for the BEST relationships with all of us kids. Ahhh, the memories!

      I never had a party line and it's a good thing because I'm so naturally curious (read: nosey!) that I would have stayed on that line listening in and would have stayed in trouble, too!! 😂

    Speaking of those old rotary wall phones and that click that satisfied or “exclaimed” the end of a good call, my mind’s eye turns back to choices, location and color. My phone was called ebony (classy word for good old standard black),was a rotary dial and hung on our kitchen wall back in 1975. It was the extra long twisted and knotted cord that invited me to twist my fingers making more knots in that cord as I chatted. That made for countless knots that in today’s quilting frenzie could be a liking to sewing thread knots and tension adjustments. Color ways begin with white (or in my experience black). Years have passed and like phones, quilting habits and tricks of the trade have brought new wonder to the quilting patterns we create and enjoy. I learned much about color value today and am grateful to you and Paul for giving it a second go around in filming. Always entertaining and informative!🧵🪡💕😄

    Because of your videos, I decided to look for men's shirts for quilt making. I never thought of them. I was always looking for sheets and women's prints. I was able to get 2 kitchen garbage bags full of men's shirts for free!!! I'm so excited to decide what quilt to make. There were also some plaids included. Working with the plaids will be a challenge for me. Thanks for your inspiration.

    Hi Cathy! I love your color theory & fabric pull videos. As a beginner, I appreciate learning from your full process. When I was getting up the courage to start my first quilt a few months ago I decided to go to a thrift store and pick out some pastel colors. Naive beginner me thought "pastels are easy, what could go wrong?" (Haha!😂) Needless to say, it didn't go well! But now I'm starting to understand why. (I ended up going to my local quilt store and got a pastel rainbow gradient fabric so all the thinking work was done for me and I could jump into that first quilt. Maybe for the next one I'll have the know-how to do it myself). Thank you again for sharing with us!!

      Renee, thank you for your comment and for watching! 🥰❤️ This is both the difficulty and joy of working with mens shirt fabrics---getting a colorway together that works and is harmonious isn't as easy as buying a jelly roll or layer cake or charm pack! But I think it is infinitely more rewarding because it requires more creativity and the end result is 100% unique and special (and often really beautiful!) PS I think it's so AWESOME that you have made your first quilt and also have some thrift store fabrics to use next time! The best part is that you're already talking about the NEXT ONE!! 🤩😍🤓👍🏻

    I think every quilt teaches us something. I just came back from a quilt retreat and often the first thing people talk about, when starting on a new quilt is what they would’ve done differently. I think, If you don’t like something, than don’t keep going, change it! It’s better than ending up with something you feel ambivalent about, when you know you could’ve done it better.
    The change you made to your quilt was a game changer and a great lesson. It will be beautiful 💕⭐️⭐️⭐️

      Thank you, Angie!! I’m much the same (change it! Fix it!) but I do think sometimes it’s good for me to let some things ride-I’m discovering more and more that the little things don’t bother me (in the end) as much as I think they will!!

      @@TheCatBirdQuilts I agree! I’m not a chaser of perfection. I’m totally fine with my handmade things actually looking handmade 😉☺️💕. The one thing quilters do, that drives me out of my tree, is when they show a gorgeous quilt and say: “it’s not perfect”. Like we need to point that out! No, I don’t think so. if anyone points out imperfections, on a quilt, (in a bad way) than they are not ‘quilt worthy’😑. Just saying 😉☺️

    I’ve watched many other quilter videos, and many are knowledgeable, but yours are so homely and different. I really don’t consider myself a quilter, but a maker, because I do a lot more dimensional cloth dolls and other products besides quilts. Anyway, I understand what you mean about the quilt store solids versus the men’s shirt solids and have weeded out most of the fabric store solids from my stash yesterday to give to the local thrift store. I now recognize why I don’t like solids and always gravitate to prints and batiks. I’m also taking your advice and reorganizing what’s left of my 40 years’ worth of fabric collecting. Thank you, Cathy, so much for all the inspiration-Lili

    Looking back, I believe quilting would have served me well in dealing with life’s issues, challenges, etc if I had begun the hobby young. But even at an older age, it certainly has added some unexpected components to the process that seems simple in concept. No wonder we wish to pass it forward to the next generation and we treasure those quilts we’ve inherited. A quilt (or quilt project) has a lot to say to us, doesn’t it? 😊

    Another way of describing value is talking about the grey scale. So 100% is black, 0% is white and 50% is medium. You can also take a picture of options and convert the picture to black and white (grey scale) and then looking where things read. It is an amazing experiment to run with things like wall paint chips, tubes of paint, yarn and thread colours etc. 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  Рік тому +1

      Red, you are so right! I often forget when I do a fabric pull that using the gray scale can help problem solve challenging pairings! But interestingly, when the quilt top is laid out, I use that exact thing (changing the photo to B&W) to make sure that it is balanced and not too dark or light in a particular area. I just need to use that same trick earlier in the process!! 🤓👍🏻😊

    I think it’s more of a challenge when you are using what you have and what you have is what you find in a thrift store. Carefully curated fabrics from the fabric store that is specially chosen from a fabric collection sometimes makes it a little simpler, still beautiful but a lot less complicated or time consuming. So, my true first quilting project was huge. You know that saying, Jump in with both feet? Well, I did, off a cliff. But then I stopped. The fabrics I originally purchased for my big quilt got sidelined. I used a few of them in the end, but ended up purchasing more fabrics which I liked better in the long run. Of course when that happened, the original quilt pattern didn’t quite work. So I ended up redesigning the pattern with some modifications. And this all came about because I didn’t like some of the colors once I got them together and started playing around with the layout. In the end, my quilt is original, the pattern is pretty much original and because I was using my really old simplicity machine, I quilted columns and then sewed the columns together and hand stacked the back columns together. The end result is different, but a direct result of changing colors and fabrics. The journey to get to the end is always an interesting ones and the most twisting journey is the one you remember most. I really like the end result. Have a great day and thanks for a great video and I can’t wait to see what’s coming next!

    🤣Phones: - I used say or hear "hang up the phone." My son, "end call."
    🥰I'm trying to approach a pile of fabric, ala "TheCatBird" way with a "very tight there really really go together" fabrics. Meanwhile there is an itch in the back of my head "maybe you could bridge from the inspiration print, a grayed blue/green floral to normal blues & greens, because there are no 'jumps' & the lack of a very light or very dark scares me..." So it is an ok pile right now waiting for inspiration or the cut bait & fish moment.
    😀I appreciated the point about how all patterns don't work with all types of fabric. I too like the pattern that you are using, but I am thinking "I could use gingham but pretty much nothing else from my stash."

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  Рік тому

      I think it is an under-referenced point in quilting: not every fabric looks good in every pattern. Just this week I saw on IG where someone used gingham (my favorite, as you know!) in a quilt pattern that had lots of seaming and angles, and the angled pieces met the square pieces, and I just don't think it was a great pairing of fabric to pattern. And I loved them BOTH (pattern and fabric) but just not together! Love that you're trying my approach--I suspect it will frustrate you to no end, but I still love that you are going out of your comfort place.🥰❤️

    Hi Cathy with a C! I have several books on color theory but the reality is (which your video communicates so clearly) that the only way to truly understand it is to get your hands “dirty “ and just go for it, with mistakes and successes! I paper craft too and if you make a mistake towards the end of a card or scrapbook page it feels very defeating to just start over, you may not have enough paper etc, so I always look at a mistake as a creative opportunity. Usually the mistake is fortuitous because it forces me to figure out a way to hide it and it turns into something that I love about the project in the end! Lastly, as we have all experienced in life when things don’t go right we have a opportunity to reframe our minds, our hearts or our faith and if we have the correct attitude about it we learn something and personal growth occurs. Oftentimes we may not see that growth without the failure.
    I’m sure you will cherish this quilt when it’s finished ❤

    Closed captioning heard the way you say aside as Assad. I didn’t have it on for “yullow”.

      LOL! God bless the folks who are watching the captioning in another language---you know they probably don't understand half of what I'm saying! 😳🤦🏻‍♀️🤓

    You had a piece of lint in your hair and I really wanted to pick it out to see if it was lint or thread. It’s likely gone by now so I will never know!?!?!

      LOL! If we could only go back in time, or make it a live video, you could have told me and we would have fixed it!! (but it also could have been a stray gray hair which are becoming more and more common these days! 😘)

    Hey Cathy, there's a shirt behind you hanging on your wall that has a nice deep "teal" color that may work???

      Renee, isn't that crazy? I saw it too and tried it, but it is too green and too muted!

      @@TheCatBirdQuilts lol, I sent my comment before I had finished watching the video (like I was helping you choose/resolve the dilemma), but I really like how you pulled it all together at the end! THE SUSPENSE!!! 🔥

      This particular one is from a thrift store, I think? lol. How fitting, right? My more interesting ones are usually thrift store finds, but I get many of them from Lands End. (on sale when I can!) 😉

    The turquoise would make a great southwest quilt with some of the reds you have. Cream and black are good backgrounds? 🏜️

      It absolutely would! Look at you paying attention to my reds! 😉
