    I'm getting ready to start the Celtic Cross baby quilt. I'm so glad you shared yours!
    You know what I love about you? You share the whole process and what you're thinking. It's given me so much food for thought. Even though our styles are very different, I gain so much from hearing your thought process. It's helping me consider colors and styles I wouldn't have considered before. So thank you for having a lot to say Cathy.

    The shirt section of the thrift store is where I find my inspiration for the next fabric pull. I pick one shirt, and the shirts that go with it are the next ones that go home with me.

    Also when looking at plaid (prints) look at the size piece that you will cut it into. The "lights" will definitely look light as a 6.5 inch square, they may be closer to medium as a 2 inch square. And how much of it will you see in the quilt? One 9-patch in the middle like your 9-patch trip around the world? An uncomfortable print could go there because it will be tamed by the subsequent rings. A really uncomfortable print could be used in the corners, because as an expanse, visually you don't dwell in the corners. (When photographing your child, are they in the top left corner of the print? No they are in the middle.)

      So true! I used the same plaid in two different blocks and achieved two different looks because of the area I chose to cut my strips. On one block I was able to catch the white/cream in the center of a wide blue and pink plaid and that block seems to glow at a distance.

    This entire video: "But wait! There's more!" I love it.
    Also LOVE that chartreuse-and-sage plaid! Makes me smile. I think I'd let it do most of the work and be a showcase piece--pair it with the green shirt if that works, and otherwise support it entirely with neutrals, like white and a charcoal grey. It could hold its own being the star of the show. You'd need to have a certain pattern for that to work, of course, but in my head it would be quite striking!

    I especially love the 'compelling' plaid grouping - great colors! Cathy, I'm having so much fun thrifting for men's shirts. I'm finding some great fabric (my fave are the Flower/Denim patterns). Tonight I started on this new journey re-watching the videos and broke down a few shirts for the first time - I'm hooked. I'm afraid I'm most passionate about finding the fabric because I've always loved fabric. I've never felt confident using the sewing machine. Decades ago I made a wall hanging quilt all by hand (because of my insecurity of navigating a sewing machine) but.... I'm committed. I've signed up for a basic class on using the machine. I'm really excited and ready to get to work - I'll make mistakes and I'll learn along the way. Thank you, Cathy, as you've been such an inspiration since I 'found' you a short time ago. ❤

    33:23 Did someone speak for the chartreuse plaid that needs a friend? If not, I’m the friend 💙. In my area, most of the linen shirts are many varieties of green. Or, I could share some charteuse linen with you. My favorite is a gradient from lighter green into oliv-ey (Is that a word? Now it is.) But that gradient shirt fits and suits me, so no deal. “Please, m’am, just step away from the scissors … slowly … Now turn around, and walk away. 🤣” P.S. That is me talking to myself.

    Thank you for sharing your entire thoughts with us! Inspiring! I would like to mention that the effect of plaids also depends on the size you use. They can look totally different in a HST than in a charm square. So i try to fold them into the shape (-ish) i would like to use in the quilt when pulling fabrics. Btw on the point of coordinating colors i often turned to denim tones to add. Maybe those seem to match because our eyes are familiar to seeing this combo everyday.

    I'm a bit of an everything but the kitchen sink person when it comes to plaids but appreciate your approach. I've been working on a churn dash quilt for ahem ... four years and often choose a complementary color when pairing up fabrics. Blue and orange, yellow and purple and red and green and occasionally I do as you do and match one of the colors in the plaid itself. One of my favorites involved using the different fabric from inside the yoke paired with the shirt it came from. Had enough fabric in that yoke to do two blocks in opposite colors. In my four or five years since playing with shirts I've yet to see a Denim & Flowers one and guessing I'm not southern enough.
    I've always been hesitant when it comes to mixing plaids with solids and will refer to this video often. I also should thank you for feeding my addiction and I'm now stalking solid color shirts as well. Previously unless it was a purple cotton (for the yet started quilt that started this journey) I totally ignored it.

    When working with these beautiful plaids I like to revert back to their original use as a shirt. What is the plaid shirt usually paired with but a nice pair of denim jeans? Denim has a wide range of blue shades and will likely look nice with many different plaids. If the plaid shirt is worn as a dress shirt what is it paired with‽? Navy slacks?? Navy blazer??? Tan or gray sport coat?? What color would he choose for a contrasting tie??? Of course, a quilt usually has a much wider color pallet...that's where your color choice (experiment) ideas you show are so helpful. Great idea to use white or cream sashing to unify and calm down the variety of colors.

    Love this video...such great suggestions to consider when pulling fabric. I love plaid but I find it challenging to put in a quilt. My question is what is your process when cutting the plaid squares? Do you cut each square individually? That is a very long process and the plaid on some shirts just doesn't cut up straight. It really bothers me if the plaid is not cut and sewn along the straight lines of the plaid. I would love some suggestions please. This was a wonderful video! As I looked at the hard plaid from a distance, sitting there on the table at the end of the video, it seemed like putting the two colors--chartreuse and sage green--next to each other might actually end up canceling out their related green-ness and tipping them toward yellow and grey. I wonder if the plaid would play nicer with those two colors if you could find the right ones--a slightly cooler yellow and a grey with the right undertones.

    Please explain “putting a natural backing” on your white linen.

      I realized I said "backing" but I meant "batting" (a cream-colored or beige batting is what I meant by "natural")

    This gave me some ideas. I saw something on the internet once with a bunch of plaids and paired each with a solid in a wonky cross pattern. So I made all these different blocks and although each is ok, all together they are awful. But you keep mentioning sashing and I think if I used sashing I could pull it together into something passable. Off to the sewing room.

      @TheCatBirdQuilts  Рік тому

      YES! Sashing can be the thing that pulls it all together (whether black, gray, cream or white) and sometimes even just an inch wide is enough!

    Enjoyed this one! Great demo of getting colors to work. I'll reiterate that you have to a wonderful talent for distinguishing which fabrics that work and which fabrics are clashy. BTW, really love the quilt hanging on your wall--groove on those blues.

    Your last plaid in yellow and blue is part of a primary triad. (Yellow, red, blue) Pull the three and see.

    I'm glad I am almost finished working on my Irish Chain, because my "next" project just be to cut my brown plaids. ( in italics for emphasis, because I "need" to deal with the explosion of light scraps while not thinking "I should find a light plaid.")

    Cathy do you ever put florals with your plaids? Such an interesting video.

      Thank you, Lois! ❤️ And I started to say "yes" but I'm not sure I have! I can think of 2 quilts that I've made that used florals and plaids--I don't actually have a ton of florals in my fabric stash!

    don't have a problem incorporating plaid fabric. my problem is i can't cut it off grain, so i only purchase woven plaids and stripes so i can cut on a thread.

    I have been buying men's shirts at Goodwill, consignment shops, second-hand shops, and rummage sales for years. I buy only 100% cottons, lightly used (or new) shirts; and, I take them apart with a seam ripper (Jack). However, I have found that the newer shirts are glued in some of the seams. One shirt even had the buttons glued on. The biggest problem I see with the glued seams is that alterations may not be possible. Have you found a way to detect glue in the seams before buying them? Is there a way of getting the glue out of the fabric?

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  Рік тому

      I haven’t paid a lot of attention to the glue scenario…probably because I cut the whole seam out with scissors! You might consider soaking them in vinegar to see if that will get rid of the glue. 🤓👍🏻
