@ReelRejects Hello Big Fan been watching you guys for a long time and I really loved y’all did a reaction of Echo. And If you guys liked watching the beginning scene of the Native sport called Choctaw stickball game y’all should check out Mississippi band of Choctaw stickball. We are still here and still play it till this day. Hope y’all can check it out and do a reaction on it. I was one of the background actors on the stickball game scene on Echo. Yakoke! Thank you
Before we even picked up a stick that was the first thing our Coach taught us about lacrosse. Coach said when he started playing that his Coach made sure to instill in him the importance of lacrosse to Native American culture so he passed that down to us. It is really cool to learn about the sport and its origins
To Greg's point, I think being kept an arm's distance from Maya to this point is intentional and in line with her personality. She's keeping everyone she knows at arm's length, and the audience picks up on that vibe. As for the surrounding cast and direction holding its own, I'm willing to bet that Marvel went into this project with that in mind as the main character is played by someone who is not only an untrained actor, but can't deliver lines with her voice. That's new to us as an audience. And that's not a knock on Alaqua Cox, but recognition that she can't come in and be as immediately charismatic and charming as, say, Iman Vellani; we take hearing voices for granted, and we aren't used to her "voice.". It feels to me like a case of surrounding her with people who give her the best chance to be successful. Combine those elevated performances with Maya's personality being rather stoic, borderline sociopathic, even, and it makes sense to feel a little on the fence about Maya as a character at this point. She's still mostly a villain right now.
I think there are several deep character dives on display in the Marvel Disney+ shows. The projects Quantumania, Secret Invasion and maybe The Marvels(I haven't seen it) seemed to make people lose hope in Marvel, but there are way more character studies, quality filmmaking and massive creative swings on display than problematic projects, esp. among the shows.
I agree fully. I know some you tubers are complaining but it’s because they don’t get as many views. They want to break down the show week by week and have all that speculation so fans come more for the videos. Yet Reel Rejects never complain and that’s why I love em.
Guys the reason for the great supporting cast is that Maya is deaf and she signs no dialog, you keep asking for more from her when you won't get it, this the first time we have a deag character in a lead role that's action packed. Calm down
@@chaotic7cam ...and that reply is why we get these types of show. They need to have muh diversity, much wahem, muh representation but NOT an actual good show.
@@user-x7dc2pq7nIMDb is the most useless “reviews” there is. Plus, everything gets 6s on there. It’s about as high as it gets. Most great movies and shows get 6s. Again, IMDb is useless.
absolutely love when the sound is from Maya's perspective. tis good filmaking. and they show her messing up a little while jumping on the train.. because you would. i know from experience on that one lol
Honestly I love the stickball scene cause we still do it every year on July to play for the best team across the nation to come and play in Mississippi
I like how you can hear Maya's heartbeat when the sound goes out, she can feel it so she notices the Bump-Bump even though she is deaf. The good thing about representing deaf characters well is that you understand what their everyday life is like (Maya using lights to know someone is at the door) and it makes people see knowing sign language is beneficial.
10:19 though that may be the case and some people may feel that way…Think about it critically. Would you prefer if the characters around this deaf actress were more subdued and not as interesting? Or would you prefer them to be more charismatic and interesting to sort of make up for the lack of dialogue? Not that a silent scene can’t be gripping or interesting or show personality because it most certainly can. But we have an entire season to go.
There have been many normal people counterparts in the MCU who help the hero to achieve their goal or complete a mission. Like Happy Hogan, Ned Leeds and Darcy Lewis, but none of them feel more like just some normal, average, guy from the real world than Biscuits does. I loved his character and I think the show did such a great job at making him feel like both a member of Maya’s family and just this normal, funny guy.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE SEEING SOME GREAT ACTORS FROM RESERVATION DOGS!! THAT SHOW IS SOOOO UNDERRATED!!! One of the best dramatic shows I’ve seen in awhile and it is actually funny too.
Graham Greene as Skully is my absolute fave! Love his "The Natives" shirt, too, mimicking the Beatles' Abbey Road. Canadian legend. Dances with Wolves, Maverick, Green Mile, Transamerica, the list goes on. His dramatic turns are outmatched only by his killer comedic timing. Love him.
i thought the indigenous had their own version of sign language, but it looks like they're pretty much using american sign language and greene learned a good deal of it for this role.
i just finished the whole show and i really enjoyed it! I LOVE shows that are more drama and not oversaturated with fight scenes. I also think they merged the mythical & ground level tones really well
So well said John. I was trying to put my finger on what I was missing, and yes it's that we need to see Maya's softer side behind the scenes. Prior to that train scene would have been ideal.. on the other hand perhaps we are starting to see it as she shot the swings that she and Bonnie played on.. perhaps we are starting to see how Maya repressed everything, even in private.. didn't want to deal with emotion and pushed everyone away. I really hope they delve deeper into that, as the deep character dives are my fave part of the Marvel shows on Disney plus. The format gives them more time to do so than the 2 hr movies. WandaVision, of course Loki, Moonknight and Ms. Marvel did it best I think. Even Falcon &the Winter Soldier explored Sam and Bucky's inner struggles a bit.
I figured I recognised grandpa Skully's voice from somehwere. Graham Greene, who plays Skully, voiced Rains Fall in Red Dead Redemption 2. Loved him in both RDR2 and in Echo, he has such a cool voice.
Man! I have been a Big fan of you guys for a long time. And you guys doing a reaction where I was a background actor in the scene of the Stickball game at the beginning is awesome! Love you guys thank y’all for the reaction and acknowledging the Choctaw people.
Ok, I binged it and will do my best to not spoil for those who haven't watched ahead. But I honestly love the attention they're giving to what it is to be Choctaw. Everything from our creation story to the way we just interact. I love that they're bringing our spirituality to the story. I feel seen. Is the show perfect, no. But, I think it accomplished it's goal well enough. I want to see her with other indigenous heroes now like Kahhori and Namor. An indigenous super team sounds fun
So the mythical stuff is part of Choctaw legend then? Cuz I was wondering if that was marvel making it up or if they did build upon something existing in the culture.
@@shadowx8145 all that is part of Choctaw culture and history. Honestly, the only thing embellished was the super powers. The origin story can have variations. It's mostly told through dance/word of mouth so it's close enough to what I heard growing up to ignore the very tiny differences. Like I said, I feel seen. It's a good feeling
I'd like to personally thank John for the Dodgeball reference. I was about to hammer out the 5 D's of dodgeball after he only said the 3. Glad you finished them off.
Do yall think Echo gets a Season 2 since Marvel is moving towards the multiple season format for shows? I’m living Maya as a chapter but I’d hate if she just only appears in Daredevil once or twice and than that’s it.
As soon as I saw it was in Alabama and they were using a blood/crimson color I couldn’t help but say, “Roll Tide!” Great episode. I’m loving her connection to her ancestor and such.
Something I love about the supporting characters, is that even after 20 years not seeing Maya - her family & friends still use and practice ASL. I mean, after so long you would at least be "rusty" i would think.
So Echo has to take place around late 2025 around November 2025. So far the Pen-ultimate episode already is a good start. Her backstory little bit similar to Kahhori's in What If...? that explores about her heritage.
I just wrapped up the whole show, and while I think it does have a lot of flaws, especially with its pacing and editing, I really did end up enjoying my time with it and especially a lot more and then a lot of other stuff Marvel has put out. I think they handled the legacy characters very well in this for the little screen time they had, and although it was short, I thought it was really well done and crafted with a lot of heart and passion. Comparing this to Thor 4 or Ant-Man 3 is like night and day because those movies that like corporate products well this one while very flawed felt like it was crafted with love and passion from day one especially everything with the Choctaw nation was awesome! 7.5/10!
