Jon Brannigan using the tactic of “they’ll be defenseless once their so exauhsted from stabbing our men.”
Romans have a preset kill limit, so I bravely sent in wave after wave of my own men!
Jon Brannegan: “If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.”
Works for Russia...
Wasn't that his Skaven strategy?
@@jeremylaynerogers game set and match !
I like to think that when he was breaking the units down, the same people got rehired as peasants and were super confused and upset by the demotion 😂
Yes Crassus you're allowed to fight, but you have to do it without any of those nice weapons and armour, and your shield-mate is going to be don the baker's son, who can't remember which shoe goes on which foot. Also, I called him a shield-mate, but he doesn't have a shield. More of a kind of... you know... well, a spatula.
@@tSp289 I don't know who I am
or why I'm here.
All I know is that I must kill.
-Don, probably
I love this idea, I thought of doing this but I'm not confident enough with the game!
Just watched your Carthage peasants yesterday. Iberian infantry, not a good unit.
@@jbbyebye Iberian Infantry are indeed pretty terrible
I love the idea that you're here to teach MATN civ VI in exchange for the secrets of Rome Total War
@@Monksy1337 Not even he can force Jon off Mali.
Iberian infantry feel a lot better with rebalance. Actually can hold a line now if you position your general near. I really appreciate the changes made to Carthage
How about a Rebel playthrough?
They're actually quite an interesting faction, since they start with a massive but weak empire at war with everyone. They can't really train anything good, but you can theoretically get any unit if someone else's army goes rebel, which you can engineer to happen.
Actually Rebels were always banned online because they were ridiculously overpowered. At least in 15k CWB which was the most popular format. They essentially have the best units from every faction in the game (bar urban cohorts), and their roster is so big and so varied that they can't be countered, while they can counter everyone else. Egypt was overpowered too, but at least it had certain weaknesses.
@@ze_rubenator When Marco said "They can't really train anything good", he was probably referring to the fact that the Rebels go deep, DEEP into the negatives money-wise very early into the campaign, IIRC. IIARC, they also have some jank when it comes to what they can build where.
@@athath2010 That's true I don't actually know how their economy is on the map. But feels like it shouldn't be too hard to fix up. You don't happen to know how to start a Rebel campaign without crashing the game, do you? It could be fun to try.
Multiplayer shouldn’t really be considered when it comes to how good a faction is in a campaign, rebels can’t even train most of those units even if they have the cash laying around iirc
@@mango4554 In general I've found that online performance tracks very well to campaign performance in this game. Scythia and Egypt are excellent skirmishers, Rome is the most well balanced, Parthia have decent skirmishers but all you really need are cataphracts and some siege equipment, the barbarians are all terrible (with the exception of Germania which is tailor-made to destroy Rome). Cretan archers and Rhodian slingers are the bomb, and really worth getting unless you're Egypt. All of this is true both online and offline.
The exception I suppose is the Rebels because they aren't really a proper faction and were never intended to be played.
claire truly outdoes herself with the thumbnails everytime.
Thank you!! It was a lot of fun to make :D
@@ClaireRousseauno thank you, it was even more fun to click on!
@@ClaireRousseau Such well placed cute hedgehogs!!!!
Random question, how long does it take to make a thumbnail?
@@orana03 it really depends! This one took a while because the brief was a little vague and we wanted it to be really fun. Usually it's about 30min each, but the YOLO series thumbnail was DAYS of iterating.
@@ClaireRousseau Oh Claire your voice and laughter are SO attractive! I have a crush on you sadly are you a philosopher??J'adore!
“This was new for the tribes, you see. They played at war, raiding each other, a little rape and pillage here, a little ransoming there. I showed them total warfare.” - Caesar, the American one.
Ave, true to american Caesar
It's like every battle is like the 300 Spartans- except you're the Persian army.
Jon. Keep up with these weird challenges/concepts. This type of content has been rather entertaining as of late.
Incidentally, I love how all of the steam achievements are faction puns. Very fitting for one of Jon's favourite games :)
It's pretty amazing how the seleucids usually get wrecked super fast, but if you give them a slight fighting chance by taking pontus out of the ecuation they thrive
"Quite right sir, give them a pitchfork and they think they own the bloody place" - Igor.
Terry Pratchett
I read that with a lisp
@@mattd6085 I wanted to write it with one, but i couldn't find the exact quote to copy, so i had to do it from memory.. :D
Peasantwerp reborn! In the past.... Peasantwerp the Ancient Beginnings!
Or all French Republic rebellions (of which there has been six I believe). They basically protest every other week, if the wind changes the french haha
Ah yes. The pubic wars, the sexiest of all wars
@@METALFREAK03 Better than licking fascist boots...
@@derekskelton4187 Yet each French president is one...interesting take :)
*Sun Tzu says* : 'We must appear strong when we are weak, and appear weak when we are strong'
I think the peasants have that covered nicely
"Bring enough peasants, they can support each other!"
Now I'm just imagining the peasants patting each other on the shoulders and being all, "You can do this, mate!"
Ah yes, for when you want your only advantage on the battlefield to be numbers, and if you want to be sure that the number of casualties will be squarely on your side.
I love how much Rome content we've been getting so much
Spiffing Brit: *eyes glow red; Rule Britannia starts playing; tea and crumpets in hand*
Jon you playing these Rome Total war epics is one of the most entertaining things I've ever seen in my life hahahaha
I do hope we can see you return to Barbarian Invasion sometime. Perhaps playing as the Romano British and try to survive the randomness of the faction?
Yes!
Request for Jon to do a full Egyptian campaign
Probably take a lot of walking.
*There's some lovely filth over here Dennis!*
16:16 Jon you killed 1/3 of your tax payers.
"Dennis-ius, there's some lovely filth down here!"
the AI actually responding to being flanked and boxing in is actually pretty nice, good change to the ai in the remaster
I love how far you can zoom out in the battle map, the original game was way too restrictive with the camera.
If you get a prompt for a peasant to become a general and join the family it should be allowed! Because they were originally a peasant
10/10 thumbnail. You know it'll be a good time when the hedgehogs get rolled out
@7:42 Ah, but Pontus *wasn't* Hellenistic in 270BC. It was a surviving Achaemenid satrapy closely connected to, but distinct from, the Hellenistic world. It became increasingly Hellenistic with time, but only from about 200BC onwards. Love your stuff by the way- from a long-term lurker and fellow history nerd
please continue the mercenary only challenge, it's just gotten to the good part.
This is just a one off to celebrate launch day
Vive la Commune! Man the barricades! Rossel and Delescluze would be proud
Haven't watched the video yet, but congrats to Claire on an amazing thumbnail.
We interrupt your regularly scheduled ridiculous challenge run to bring you an even MORE ridiculous challenge run.
Also, watching the peasants move whenever Jon speeds up time is like watching a school of fish swim around a shark in a David Attenborough documentary.
This reminds me of the last time I played Egypt in original Rome. my cities kept getting overcrowded so I started making peasant armies and just kept throwing them into auto resolve combat with opponents. Eventually I wore them down on numbers alone and it helped with the crowding in the cities. :D
Pretty sure the Eastern General is actually one of the better bodyguards in melee. It just happens to *also* have javelins.
When you decide that Rome:TW needed Ork hordes to be perfect...
Totally accurate battle simulator but its actually Rome: Total War Remastered
I started my campaign right now and you also uploaded, can't decide what to do. Probably watch in bed later as always, so comfy.
Pontus: The First Commune
To be fair, the Seleucids often get dogpiled because they rarely have a weak Pontus to take their attention
Jon: *Expects to dogpile on the Seleucids*
Jon: *Becomes the Seleucids*
If you wanted to fix their morale, then go for Thrace. Ares gives them a bonus to morale, which on certain units, is goddamn broken(Christ help you if you’re on a bridge and the opponent is a group of fully upgraded Spartans with max temple of ares)
Are the moral bonus's from buildings working in remastered? I seem to recall they never worked correctly in the original.
"Deploy my most elite peasants!" Words I never thought I'd hear...
I'd love to see a Barbarian Invasion campaign, playing as some of the barbarian factions. A saxon playthrough, or the celts if they've been made playable, would be fun.
Another idea for a campaign:
General units only (just generals/family members/whatever they’re called)
Glory to the Proletariat! Seize the means of production!
This is like.. The Imperial Guard of 40k going up against superior foes.
"Incoming tanks... Affix bayonets!"
Today is my step dad’s birthday and he loved the original and it is being released on the same day.
"Peasants aren't infrastructure; they're kind of the opposite." feels like a kind of sublime turn of phrase somehow.
Many A True Nerd: Warcrimes Edition
Oh no, Jon!
You chose *PONTUS!*
*Do you know what you've DONE?!*
Lmao
I want to see a full series of this, this was one of the most entertaining challenges you've ever done Jon!
You should have gone for Julii for this - could have recreated the BC version of the 'Worker-Peasant Red Army'... missed opportunity :)
I feel like there's a fitting Blackadder quote for this situation, but I cannot for the life of me remember it
"Oh, Mithridates, you really are a beginner - you're not even wearing a pair of comedy hedgehogs!
"Ah yes! Arrow fodder!"
This is the reality of a larp battle in an RTS
I was looking forward to more of the mercenary challenge but... but this... this is truly something that must be seen and enjoyed.
I never checked that it needs windows 10. I finally have the impetus to put a new rig together. Farewell at last, 7... I'll miss you.
So happy that Rome has become so prominent on this channel again.
Getting nostalgic for your unit of hero peasants from your last Rome full-play
Another Rome remastered video, MATN has never been better
While watching this, I constantly found myself asking "but Jon, surely you should be playing defensively?"
This is why my Stellaris playthroughs always begin with me playing tall, then having to engage armadas triple my entire navy capacity 😅 thank f**k for Citadels and defence platforms 😂
Having a devil of a time getting my installation to work. Thanks for picking up the slack Jon! Got my morning Rome after all.
Mazaka is just such an amazing name for the city, given the circumstances.
I have done a full roman peasant playthrough on the original rome total war version. was a lot of fun seeing them swarm every city and unit in the game
In today's flavor john roleplays as the imperial guard! All hail the emperor!
Whispers say the peasants of Peasantwerp were heavily influenced by this series of events and vowed to show their modern world the power that the peasants of the ancient world carried.
Between the mercenary's challenge and this, I'm beginning to suspect that Jon's general approach to this remaster is to avoid using as many units as possible.
Thanks for the video!
Downloaded rome remastered yesterday
I meet all the requirements
Even the recommended ones
Crashed immediately
Couldn't even start it up
Not the only one, steam forums are cooking
Jon I will always love you for producing fun content like this, and often in my favorite games somehow!
I really feel like Jon just took a page out of Zapp Brannigan's strategy book here.
"Well, you see, hoplites are a terrifying foe, to be sure. But they are only men, and men get tired. So I just sent wave after wave of troops at them until they were exhausted and too mired in bodies to move."
Two words I didn't think I'd haird said together. "Elite peasants."
Ah, everyone getting together to stamp out the insipient revolution. Feels very appropriate
Consurgite, damnati mundi! Consurgite, famelici! Ratione orta moribundi, pereunt status relici! Ecce, saeculum vetustum nutat - turba servorum, surgite! Nam mundus iam penitus mutat: Qui estis nil, omnia fite!
Hoc est proelium finale; congregemur ut cras! Sit Internationale una humanitas! Hoc est proelium finale; congregemur ut cras! Sit Internationale una humanitas!
"The peasants are revolting"
"Indeed, they are."
Jon using the Brannigan tactics against horse archers; I knew the horse archers had a limited number of arrows. Knowing their weakness, I sent wave after wave of my own men at them until they reached their limit and had to fight in melee.
Thank you for this spectacle, Jon!
Some of those fights were like if you setup the battle of 10000 chickens vs 1 T-Rex in UEBS.
I miss last stand in the town centers so much in modern total wars it was such a cool mechanic and also made siege battles way more challenging
All power to the people!
They did a great job with this game. Top notch work.
It is also my Birthday and the fact that It is rome total war remastered launch day makes me very happy :)
All of Rome will be amazed at such a Happy Birthday!
@@maarchalk2840 THE GIFT IS YOURS!!!!!!!!!
@@andergustafson6664 Ahh squeaky voiced voice crack narrator man If have not heard your voice in many years
I love these challenge run.
Maybe you could a one-off in Barbarian Invasion, where you try to trigger the maximum numbers of hordes? And then just see, what they do 😂
I think the biggest problem with only using presents is less that peasants are terrible fighters and more that the casualties you take even in a fight you did excellently drain your population so you just can’t sustain it
It would be interesting to see a cheaty version of this, where you give yourself the best buildings to immediately have powerful peasants, on extreme unit scale
WHOSE STREETS?
"A secure start."
Faction difficulty: HARD
The Hedgehog with the red flag was beautiful
I used to do this for fun, never thought their was an "official" challenge for it, back in the day.
Those were the days, setting up custom battles of a full stack of peasants and seeing what can and can't beat it
Feels like Christmas with all this new RTW content
That intro stills gives me chills
Watching the units run around on fast speed is pretty funny.
For reason this reminds me of taking over the world as germina with spear warbands
Got the game today, been enjoying it so much, the new UI was real easy to get a hold of as well, was expecting it would be harder to get used to it
"The Great Peasant Revolution", ah yes! The peasants bleed and fight and die, while the nobility sits back and enjoys the show. So much has changed!
Sir, the peasants are revolting!
You said it, They stink on ice!
This is such a good idea! Brilliant content as always
Antwerp: *begins to sweat profusely*
I think a full mini-series of this would be great, but I do not think that such an army would be viable in economic terms :D
Love the impossible challenges! Will this be a worthy follow-up to the epic Crusader Kings 3 Vikings campaign?
I believe it's an one off for the launch day.
