The thing about Wilt Chamberlain that I remember as a child was the fact that most of his game was holding back. You could see it. He was trying his best not to hurt people. The rules were written against him and his conscience would not let him just misuse players. Every now and then he'd flex and the other ballers would be in mortal terror. This cat was scary powerful.

I did a win share % measure for Wilt (like we have spoken about previously player WS / team wins in games the player played) and Wilt's season and playoffs combined was at 36.7% (278.8 win shares / 760 wins) which was by a good amount the highest of the players I looked at. For a few comparison examples Jordan was at 30.8%, LeBron 28.5% - subject to change since still playing, Kareem 25.2% and B Russell 24.0%. Though I know you did some before separating season and playoffs which is what most would do, but I thought it interesting to see what a straight up total games would look like. I'm also going to look at year by year to see what the highest win share % for a single year is. Then I will treat that as a greatest peak year so to speak. After that I will see how close to that highest peak year others players came to. For instance let's say for scenario a player's highest was 40% in a year and that was the highest ever for anyone, 40% would be the 100 peak benchmark. So if another player had a 36% as his highest I would give them a 90 for their peak year (36/40). Could also do this for all the player's years and see how many in the 90s, 80s etc they get.

Of the Top 25 seasons for Win Shares, Wilt had 7, Jordan had 5, Kareem had 3 and Lebron has 3. Lebrons weren't consecutive. Wilt had a 4 year stretch and a 3 year stretch, Jordan had a 4 year stretch and Kareem had a 3 year stretch. You'll notice, even though Wilt's scoring went down in his second stretch, his Win Shares stayed about the same. Kareem(71-73) 69.6 WS => 23.20 a year Wilt(61-64) 87.8 WS => 21.95 a year(42.62 ppg) Wilt(66-68) 63.7 WS => 21.23 a year(27.26 ppg) Jordan(88-91) 80.3 WS => 20.08 a year As far as Wilt's playoff performances go, going just by points is pretty simple minded. The only players with a better Career WS per Playoff Game percentage are Lebron and Jordan. If you look at the top players for career playoff Win Shares, Wilt played the least amount of games. An example, Kareem has about 4 more WS than Wilt but played like 77 more games. You'll also see that Wilt's WS stayed the same even with a 15 ppg drop. This is because he could alter his game. He didn't have to score to be dominant. He did everything well. BUT, Kareem from 71 to 73 was a beast. Wilt and Kareem's dominance in these time periods are also backed up by an adjusted shooting analytic called FG ADD. Let's take it a step further.The more a team wins, the more Win Shares are available to be allotted. So, if we divide career WS by playoff games won(WS per Playoff Game Won), this is how it looks: Wilt .3575 Jordan .3341 Lebron .3200

I'm a DIEHARD Celtics fan, but even I rate Wilt Chamberlain or Michael Jordan as the GOAT. What Wilt rarely gets credit for was his VERY good shooter's touch. Just that comment will make the average hoop fan incredulous, but when I say Wilt had a VEARY good touch, go watch the MANY, MANY clips of Wilt using the backboard to careen his jump shots into the hoop (and most of the shots were not "gimme" type shots either). Then there was Wilt's OBSCENE athleticism. People talk about Shaq's athleticism and power, but Shaq couldn't hold a candle to the incredible combination of Wilt's power AND speed. I know it sounds like benching almost 600 pounds would be damn near impossible--especially given the long arms Wilt had--but then one reads comments from Arnold Schwarzenegger himself saying HOW strong Wilt was when he took Wilt into the gym to lift weights, and one can possible believe that maybe Wilt could bench damn near 600 pounds as he claimed. All I know is when it comes to the NBA's GOAT conversation, I think it's a borderline crime the way Wilt's name is often times not even in the conversation. And to echo Allister Mcginlay's comment about Wilt, I truly do believe Wilt (in the GOAT context) was a victim of his own unmatched, gaudy statistics.

The 60's game was played at a faster pace and there were no 3 point baskets at all. Players played more minutes. And they didn't have luxury jet airplanes to be flown around in. As for Wilt, he was physically the most dominating player ever. He would have put Michael Jordan on his a___ if he came into the lane.
The game was a lot faster in the 1960s. The fact that Chamberlain averaged nearly 46 mpg in a running era and Jordan averaged less than 40 in a time when the game was slower tells me who had more stamina.
I'm not quite sure that's completely accurate, since Jordan was known to have a lot of energy and stamina as a player. For example, he'd play golf all day then the next day go in and play top notch basketball, putting up excellent numbers. But you'd probably see the same thing from Wilt if he was to play in the same era as Jordan because Wilt played the whole game, every game.

I don't think that there is a "greatest team'. I think there are all time great teams. I would put 86 Celtics, 87 Lakers, 96 Bulls, 2001 Lakers, KD's Warriors on those lists. I'm also adding some prime Tim Duncan Spurs teams to the list and the Pistons twice. 2004 Pistons because those guys shared the ball and on any given night they had 4 guys that could take over the game. The bad boy Pistons too. They won 2 straight and as much as a hate to say it as a Lakers fan it should have been 3. That phantom foul on Kareem robbed the Pistons of the series clinching win. That Sixers team is tough. On paper, those names, for sure. But considering the age and injuries of some of those guys I can't go with it.

The highest "documented" NBA max reach is 12'6". I think young people have been "brain washed" into believing things that aren't true due to NIKE/NBA propaganda AND video games. Wilt got up much higher than 12'6" and I'm sure Russell could have too if he had to. So, how are they more athletic today? Or the other way around: imagine today's players playing with these shoes, on these courts and without all the medical science they use today, without the private flights, etc etc. The performance would not be the same and fatigue would set in much sooner.... We would then see who and who is not the greatest.
You'd also have to have a larger, international talent pool to draw from, and much better high school and college programs. A lot of starters from the 60s and 70s couldn't get drafted today because there's more, stiffer competition.

Whether today's game is better than that of the 1960s or 1970s is purely subjective. I, for one, prefer basketball before the 3-point shot. It was a much different game then and I prefer it as a fan.

A fast sport with far fewer breaks is NHL hockey. That's why there are line changes. NBA doesn't have line changes. I am not a hockey fan. When they moved the North Stars to Dallas, that ended it for me.
To me when people claim this or that generation wasn't as "skilled" or athletic. They were simply not as good 3-point / long distance shooter as Curry. But you did a pretty bad job in this interview. First you started lecturing and dominating the conversation like you were talking to your buddy while playing video games. This is an NBA great and sports commentator. You don't need to tell him to be unbiased and you shouldn't interrupt him. And when he speaks you should listen. When he was talking about how he couldn't finish a book because it brought back emotional stories, he had to repeat himself many times. Why? Imagine someone an inch taller than Joel Embiid or Shaq. And significantly stronger than each even if he was lighter. He had power lifter strength. And he could run as fast as an average NFL receiver. (10.9 100 yard dash in college). He could jump at least as high as Jordan could...he was also considered a finesse player and would get hacked like crazy and it was never called. The numbers sound crazy because they are. He was a freak. If you want to ask why the world and TV consider Michael Jordan the best you should look at Nike. Nike and the NBA have made a lot of money off of Michael. In any case, I have done a lot of research but unlike Walton I haven't seen either of these athletes up close in real life. And you can tell a lot more about someone watching them in person than on grainy videos or even hd videos. Then if you know basketball like a pro? I would take him at his word. It’s funny that the rules were changed for hand checking after MJs career. MJ was dominating before he made it big. No doubt they changed the rules for Wilt, only other 7fter near him was Kareem. The rules were changed to open up the game of basketball for Wilt. Dunking free throws and offensive goal tending, widening the lane are things the NBA needed. Throwing the ball over the top of the goal for alley ops is a violation, but it would have been nice to be seen 😂
You’ve got it completely backwards. The league created rules to stop wilts domination. He was so dominate they changed rules bc they were afraid he would ruin the sport. He would dunk from free throw line, an they made that illegal. He would catch a dunk alley oops from over the back of the back board on inbound passes, until they made that illegal. They even changed a goaltending rule bc of him. The widening of the lane was to make wilt have to set up in the post even farther away from the rim than when the lane was 12 ft. The move to 16 ft lane width was made to slow wilt down. With MJ, the NBA created rules to help him bc he like to play iso basketball. They created the “Jordan Rule” where only one guy could be on the weak side playing defense against an iso. Again, you have it completely backwards.

Wilt Chamberlain has been quoted as saying when he was at Kansas and they were defeated by UNC in three OTs for the NCAA championship in 1957 just as the Tar Heels had defeated the Michigan State Spartans the previous night in 3 OTs he was labeled a loser for the rest of his life and he could never shake that perception though he was probably the most dominant player ever in the game. I say dominant because of his size and scoring acumen. But that doesn't mean he was the greatest basketball player of all time which I still say goes to Jordan because of his pure athleticism and his will to win. But admittedly I'm from North Carolina, a resident of Wilmington Michael's hometown most of my adult life, and a lifelong UNC fan.
I too live in Wilmington. There's no such thing as an individual GOAT in a team sport with multiple positions and multiple playing styles in multiple eras with multiple rules changes.

I've played basketball, but that was not my sport of choice and so in high school, I played baseball and football though my lack of size forced me to quit the latter. Baseball on the other hand is a sport that will let any size person participate in it. And I ran track because I could run very fast as a teenager. Of course, the era in which a professional player engaged in any sport has to be part of the equation but considering that I've witnessed plenty of professionals as well as pundits who have offered their opinions on who is the greatest player ever was in any sport and thus have invoked the term GOAT I don't think my own opinion is any less valid. And the consensus among those groups as it pertains to basketball seems to me to be that Michael Jordan is the greatest player of all time. In reality, we can never really know who the greatest player ever was in any sport is until time travel is invented, and even then it seems improbable unless you can somehow assure the players will be in their prime age when they competed in order for the best to compete with each other. I'm sure however a panel of esteemed physicists could possibly make the determination since that science can better make the variable and mathematical considerations of what would be required of any individual to be concluded as the greatest player ever. And even then it would only be theoretical. Frankly, when I was a young person in the 1960s playing sports in high school and beyond in Legion ball (I'm 74 ) a GOAT had a whole other meaning. When I played organized sports the goat of the game was usually someone who blew a play which led to defeat. Michael isn't even considered the greatest player at Carolina when he was there. I'd wager that James Worthy gets that nod. There are numerous other candidates beyond James (including him) for that accolade. I saw a couple of those candidates play in my HS gym in 1968 when the ACC had begun a Traveling All-Star team touring the state after the season was over. The main guy I saw was Bobby Lewis who could shoot lights out though his NBA career was a bust. The top scorer of that game however was Larry Brown who at the time was an assistant at Carolina right before his ABA career began. The most impressive thing Lewis did that night after arriving late was to have a beautiful blonde on his arm. Forgive my rambling, so at last, let me make the caveat that my estimation of Michael as the greatest player is that he's the greatest I've ever seen.

And having one great player is no guarantee you'll be back into the title game considering what could happen. No, they didn't make it to the title game in all those years after Worthy, but they did make it to the Sweet 16 fourteen years in a row after which is remarkable in itself. And won the title again in 93. And in 84 Kenny Smith had gotten his wrist broken against LSU on a dirty play under the basket by John Tudor. Michael almost started to fight Tudor afterward if you recall. Many considered that 84 UNC team, the greatest team ever UNC had. And when Dean brought Kenny back to play point guard the chemistry was no longer there and they were eliminated by Indiana when Michael, was mugged the whole game and held to only 13 points by Dan Dakich. And my contention all along has been that Worthy was probably the greatest player Carolina had in its overall history but has contenders for this imaginary title. What are you implying that Jordan wasn't as great as many contend? Hell, many might say that Lennie Rosenbluth is because in the 56 and 57 seasons his team went undefeated and defeated not only Michigan State and Kansas which were both great teams in triple OT to win the title, and thus Lennie was the greatest player ever in the history of college basketball? The same could be said for Knight's undefeated season with the stellar team that featured Kent Benson, Keith May, etc. Carolina did make it to the tournament for those 14 years in a row and won another title which is a sign of a consistently good team. And in the 81 title game, Al Wood who was an All-American was off his game after having scored 39 against Virginia which had Ralph Sampson. Some contend Sampson was the greatest college player ever and he never won a title. And I never said Michael was the greatest player in the history of UNC but rather Worthy. Or at least the greatest player I had ever seen when I got to watch them play. But overall Michael was the greatest player at UNC and I saw several of those games he was in. I saw him in high school also and he was the best high school player I ever saw although, in his senior year, his team only finished with 19 wins and was eliminated by New Hanover which featured Kenny Gatison and Clyde Simmons on their team. One of the games I saw him play in was at Reynolds in 83 when NC State beat them and went on to win the title. What happened in that year's title game was that Jim Valvano simply out-coached Guy Lewis with lesser talent. I believe Jordan fouled out at the end of that State game I saw at Reynolds. And who would have ever thought State would win the title that year against a dominating Houston team? A lot of variables are always part of the equation and you won't necessarily win such a game even if your whole roster is overmatched against a rival like State was against Houston. And Jordan can't be responsible for any League decisions about rules even if they are made to favor him. They always do that because in the era he played basketball took off internationally. And they weren't necessarily for his benefit because Magic and Larry and a few other greats like Dr. J were around as well. I think Wilt was simply jealous because he could never win titles like Russell or his contemporaries at the time he was so dominant. Maybe he should have concentrated more on winning titles rather than boasting about screwing a thousand women which Arthur Ashe said he should have been ashamed over. Maybe he would have won more than two measly titles against Russell's eleven.

The thing about Wilt Chamberlain that I remember as a child was the fact that most of his game was holding back. You could see it. He was trying his best not to hurt people. The rules were written against him and his conscience would not let him just misuse players. Every now and then he'd flex and the other ballers would be in mortal terror. This cat was scary powerful.

I did a win share % measure for Wilt (like we have spoken about previously player WS / team wins in games the player played) and Wilt's season and playoffs combined was at 36.7% (278.8 win shares / 760 wins) which was by a good amount the highest of the players I looked at. For a few comparison examples Jordan was at 30.8%, LeBron 28.5% - subject to change since still playing, Kareem 25.2% and B Russell 24.0%. Though I know you did some before separating season and playoffs which is what most would do, but I thought it interesting to see what a straight up total games would look like.
I'm also going to look at year by year to see what the highest win share % for a single year is. Then I will treat that as a greatest peak year so to speak. After that I will see how close to that highest peak year others players came to. For instance let's say for scenario a player's highest was 40% in a year and that was the highest ever for anyone, 40% would be the 100 peak benchmark. So if another player had a 36% as his highest I would give them a 90 for their peak year (36/40). Could also do this for all the player's years and see how many in the 90s, 80s etc they get.

Here's one I did. Afterward I redid Mikan ans he was second by a little over Wilt.
Of the Top 25 seasons for Win Shares, Wilt had 7, Jordan had 5, Kareem had 3 and Lebron has 3. Lebrons weren't consecutive. Wilt had a 4 year stretch and a 3 year stretch, Jordan had a 4 year stretch and Kareem had a 3 year stretch. You'll notice, even though Wilt's scoring went down in his second stretch, his Win Shares stayed about the same.
Kareem(71-73) 69.6 WS => 23.20 a year
Wilt(61-64) 87.8 WS => 21.95 a year(42.62 ppg)
Wilt(66-68) 63.7 WS => 21.23 a year(27.26 ppg)
Jordan(88-91) 80.3 WS => 20.08 a year
As far as Wilt's playoff performances go, going just by points is pretty simple minded. The only players with a better Career WS per Playoff Game percentage are Lebron and Jordan. If you look at the top players for career playoff Win Shares, Wilt played the least amount of games. An example, Kareem has about 4 more WS than Wilt but played like 77 more games. You'll also see that Wilt's WS stayed the same even with a 15 ppg drop. This is because he could alter his game. He didn't have to score to be dominant. He did everything well. BUT, Kareem from 71 to 73 was a beast. Wilt and Kareem's dominance in these time periods are also backed up by an adjusted shooting analytic called FG ADD.
Let's take it a step further.The more a team wins, the more Win Shares are available to be allotted. So, if we divide career WS by playoff games won(WS per Playoff Game Won), this is how it looks:
Wilt .3575
Jordan .3341
Lebron .3200

I'm a DIEHARD Celtics fan, but even I rate Wilt Chamberlain or Michael Jordan as the GOAT. What Wilt rarely gets credit for was his VERY good shooter's touch. Just that comment will make the average hoop fan incredulous, but when I say Wilt had a VEARY good touch, go watch the MANY, MANY clips of Wilt using the backboard to careen his jump shots into the hoop (and most of the shots were not "gimme" type shots either).
Then there was Wilt's OBSCENE athleticism. People talk about Shaq's athleticism and power, but Shaq couldn't hold a candle to the incredible combination of Wilt's power AND speed. I know it sounds like benching almost 600 pounds would be damn near impossible--especially given the long arms Wilt had--but then one reads comments from Arnold Schwarzenegger himself saying HOW strong Wilt was when he took Wilt into the gym to lift weights, and one can possible believe that maybe Wilt could bench damn near 600 pounds as he claimed.
All I know is when it comes to the NBA's GOAT conversation, I think it's a borderline crime the way Wilt's name is often times not even in the conversation. And to echo Allister Mcginlay's comment about Wilt, I truly do believe Wilt (in the GOAT context) was a victim of his own unmatched, gaudy statistics.

The game was a lot faster in the 1960s. The fact that Chamberlain averaged nearly 46 mpg in a running era and Jordan averaged less than 40 in a time when the game was slower tells me who had more stamina.
I'm not quite sure that's completely accurate, since Jordan was known to have a lot of energy and stamina as a player. For example, he'd play golf all day then the next day go in and play top notch basketball, putting up excellent numbers. But you'd probably see the same thing from Wilt if he was to play in the same era as Jordan because Wilt played the whole game, every game.

I don't think that there is a "greatest team'. I think there are all time great teams. I would put 86 Celtics, 87 Lakers, 96 Bulls, 2001 Lakers, KD's Warriors on those lists. I'm also adding some prime Tim Duncan Spurs teams to the list and the Pistons twice. 2004 Pistons because those guys shared the ball and on any given night they had 4 guys that could take over the game. The bad boy Pistons too. They won 2 straight and as much as a hate to say it as a Lakers fan it should have been 3. That phantom foul on Kareem robbed the Pistons of the series clinching win. That Sixers team is tough. On paper, those names, for sure. But considering the age and injuries of some of those guys I can't go with it.

The highest "documented" NBA max reach is 12'6". I think young people have been "brain washed" into believing things that aren't true due to NIKE/NBA propaganda AND video games. Whether today's game is better than that of the 1960s or 1970s is purely subjective. I, for one, prefer basketball before the 3-point shot. It was a much different game then and I prefer it as a fan.

I ask how good would wilt or Kareem or.bill Russel or Jerry west been if they had brand new Nikes and got to grow.up on aau teams ? Players in the 60s and 70s dominated wearing sneakers that are less comfortable than today's dress shoes. Training, injury rehab and medicine has advanced so much in the last 50 years it's unfair to compare what players today have at their disposal to what players then had. Give Durant a pair of old converse sneakers and put him in a game . Be a rolled ankle in the first 3 mins.

For the person that made this video. Dude, I dont know you or this channel. I dont know how old you are either. And Im sure you will improve as an interviewers. But you did a pretty bad job in this interview. First you started lecturing and dominating the conversation like you were talking to your buddy while playing video games. This is an NBA great and sports commentator. You don't need to tell him to be unbiased and you shouldn't interrupt him. And when he speaks you should listen. When he was talking about how he couldn't finish a book because it brought back emotional stories, he had to repeat himself many times. Why? Because you were acting like he couldn't finish it because he was bored. And then you insisted that before the next time he comes back he reads it when he just said it was painful? Come on man...If you want to get that done then next time you read a passage and ask his reaction.

I grew up watching basketball in the 90s but that doesn't mean I cant imagine better players before. Its not like the human body changed dramatically. He could jump at least as high as Jordan could...he was also considered a finesse player and would get hacked like crazy and it was never called. The numbers sound crazy because they are. He was a freak. If you want to ask why the world and TV consider Michael Jordan the best you should look at Nike. Nike and the NBA have made a lot of money off of Michael.
In any case, I have done a lot of research but unlike Walton I haven't seen either of these athletes up close in real life. And you can tell a lot more about someone watching them in person than on grainy videos or even hd videos. Then if you know basketball like a pro? I would take him at his word. The rules were changed to open up the game of basketball for Wilt. Dunking free throws and offensive goal tending, widening the lane are things the NBA needed. Throwing the ball over the top of the goal for alley ops is a violation, but it would have been nice to be seen 😂

The league created rules to stop wilts domination. He was so dominate they changed rules bc they were afraid he would ruin the sport. He would dunk from free throw line, an they made that illegal. He would catch a dunk alley oops from over the back of the back board on inbound passes, until they made that illegal. They even changed a goaltending rule bc of him. The widening of the lane was to make wilt have to set up in the post even farther away from the rim than when the lane was 12 ft. The move to 16 ft lane width was made to slow wilt down.
With MJ, the NBA created rules to help him bc he like to play iso basketball. They created the “Jordan Rule” where only one guy could be on the weak side playing defense against an iso.

Wilt Chamberlain has been quoted as saying when he was at Kansas and they were defeated by UNC in three OTs for the NCAA championship in 1957 just as the Tar Heels had defeated the Michigan State Spartans the previous night in 3 OTs he was labeled a loser for the rest of his life and he could never shake that perception though he was probably the most dominant player ever in the game. I say dominant because of his size and scoring acumen. But that doesn't mean he was the greatest basketball player of all time which I still say goes to Jordan because of his pure athleticism and his will to win. But admittedly I'm from North Carolina, a resident of Wilmington Michael's hometown most of my adult life, and a lifelong UNC fan.

I too live in Wilmington. There's no such thing as an individual GOAT in a team sport with multiple positions and multiple playing styles in multiple eras with multiple rules changes.
@@PoliticusRex632 Well perhaps I should have qualified it by saying he's the greatest player i.e. the greatest athlete I've ever seen playing the sport of basketball. And also I didn't invent the term so I shouldn't be excoriated for the opinion I gave albeit I'm sure that was not what you were doing. I've played basketball, but that was not my sport of choice and so in high school, I played baseball and football though my lack of size forced me to quit the latter. Baseball on the other hand is a sport that will let any size person participate in it. And I ran track because I could run very fast as a teenager. Of course, the era in which a professional player engaged in any sport has to be part of the equation but considering that I've witnessed plenty of professionals as well as pundits who have offered their opinions on who is the greatest player ever was in any sport and thus have invoked the term GOAT I don't think my own opinion is any less valid.
And the consensus among those groups as it pertains to basketball seems to me to be that Michael Jordan is the greatest player of all time. In reality, we can never really know who the greatest player ever was in any sport is until time travel is invented, and even then it seems improbable unless you can somehow assure the players will be in their prime age when they competed in order for the best to compete with each other. I'm sure however a panel of esteemed physicists could possibly make the determination since that science can better make the variable and mathematical considerations of what would be required of any individual to be concluded as the greatest player ever. And even then it would only be theoretical.
Frankly, when I was a young person in the 1960s playing sports in high school and beyond in Legion ball (I'm 74 ) a GOAT had a whole other meaning. When I played organized sports the goat of the game was usually someone who blew a play which led to defeat. Michael isn't even considered the greatest player at Carolina when he was there. I'd wager that James Worthy gets that nod. There are numerous other candidates beyond James (including him) for that accolade. I saw a couple of those candidates play in my HS gym in 1968 when the ACC had begun a Traveling All-Star team touring the state after the season was over. The main guy I saw was Bobby Lewis who could shoot lights out though his NBA career was a bust. The top scorer of that game however was Larry Brown who at the time was an assistant at Carolina right before his ABA career began. The most impressive thing Lewis did that night after arriving late was to have a beautiful blonde on his arm. Forgive my rambling, so at last, let me make the caveat that my estimation of Michael as the greatest player is that he's the greatest I've ever seen.
@@roymerritt9927 Being a UNC fan you of all people should know that UNC made it to the final 2 the year before Jordan arrived, then won the title in Jordan's freshman year with Worthy as UNC's best player. Then Worthy leaves and UNC never makes it back to the final 4 with Jordan.
@@eternalbossdoomsday Yeah in 81 they should have canceled the title game because it was held the night of the day when Reagan was shot by Hinckley and should have never been played on such a somber night. And having one great player is no guarantee you'll be back into the title game considering what could happen. No, they didn't make it to the title game in all those years after Worthy, but they did make it to the Sweet 16 fourteen years in a row after which is remarkable in itself. And won the title again in 93. And in 84 Kenny Smith had gotten his wrist broken against LSU on a dirty play under the basket by John Tudor. Michael almost started to fight Tudor afterward if you recall. Many considered that 84 UNC team, the greatest team ever UNC had. And when Dean brought Kenny back to play point guard the chemistry was no longer there and they were eliminated by Indiana when Michael, was mugged the whole game and held to only 13 points by Dan Dakich. And my contention all along has been that Worthy was probably the greatest player Carolina had in its overall history but has contenders for this imaginary title.
What are you implying that Jordan wasn't as great as many contend? Hell, many might say that Lennie Rosenbluth is because in the 56 and 57 seasons his team went undefeated and defeated not only Michigan State and Kansas which were both great teams in triple OT to win the title, and thus Lennie was the greatest player ever in the history of college basketball? The same could be said for Knight's undefeated season with the stellar team that featured Kent Benson, Keith May, etc. Carolina did make it to the tournament for those 14 years in a row and won another title which is a sign of a consistently good team. And in the 81 title game, Al Wood who was an All-American was off his game after having scored 39 against Virginia which had Ralph Sampson. Some contend Sampson was the greatest college player ever and he never won a title.
And I never said Michael was the greatest player in the history of UNC but rather Worthy. Or at least the greatest player I had ever seen when I got to watch them play. But overall Michael was the greatest player at UNC and I saw several of those games he was in. I saw him in high school also and he was the best high school player I ever saw although, in his senior year, his team only finished with 19 wins and was eliminated by New Hanover which featured Kenny Gatison and Clyde Simmons on their team. One of the games I saw him play in was at Reynolds in 83 when NC State beat them and went on to win the title. What happened in that year's title game was that Jim Valvano simply out-coached Guy Lewis with lesser talent.
I believe Jordan fouled out at the end of that State game I saw at Reynolds. And who would have ever thought State would win the title that year against a dominating Houston team? A lot of variables are always part of the equation and you won't necessarily win such a game even if your whole roster is overmatched against a rival like State was against Houston. And Jordan can't be responsible for any League decisions about rules even if they are made to favor him. They always do that because in the era he played basketball took off internationally. And they weren't necessarily for his benefit because Magic and Larry and a few other greats like Dr. J were around as well. I think Wilt was simply jealous because he could never win titles like Russell or his contemporaries at the time he was so dominant. Maybe he should have concentrated more on winning titles rather than boasting about screwing a thousand women which Arthur Ashe said he should have been ashamed over. Maybe he would have won more than two measly titles against Russell's eleven.
