"Buffalo Stance" is a 1988 single recorded by Swedish singer Neneh Cherry, released from her debut album, Raw Like Sushi. The song peaked at No. 3 on both the UK Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100, and it reached No. 1 in her native Sweden and the Netherlands. An early version of the song appeared as the B-side on the 1986 Stock, Aitken, and Waterman-produced single "Looking Good Diving" by duo Morgan-McVey, which was made up of Jamie Morgan and Cherry's future husband Cameron McVey. The song, titled "Looking Good Diving with the Wild Bunch", was sung by Cherry.[1]
The song title refers to "Buffalo", a group of photographers, models, musicians, hair and makeup artists, etc. formed by fashion stylist Ray Petri, of which group Cherry, Morgan, and McVey were all members.[2] A buffalo stance is, Cherry told The New York Times, "an attitude you have to have in order to get by. It's not about fashion but about survival in inner cities and elsewhere."[3] The song's title is also a reference to the Malcolm McLaren song "Buffalo Gals" (1983), which "Buffalo Stance" samples. Other samples came from Rock Steady Crew's "Hey You", and the saxophone break is from the band Miami's song "Chicken Yellow" (1974).[4]
Tim Simenon, also called "Bomb the Bass", was asked to help with the reworking of the song. Cherry pays homage to Simenon during the song's breaks with "Yeah, Timmy! Tell it like it is!" and "Bomb the Bass, rock this place!"[citation needed]
Cherry notably performed the song live on Top of the Pops while seven months pregnant.[4] When asked by a reporter if it were safe for her to go up on stage performing, Cherry answered: "Yes, of course! It's not an illness."
This song was the start of the best year of my life! 1989!
Wait up. There’s some issues with the bio I’m reading down in the comments. Neneh was born to a Swedish mother and a father from Sierra Leone. Her mother was remarried when Neneh was young to Don Cherry, the American jazz musician. They moved to the US when Neneh was only 8 or 9...she then left school at fourteen and moved to London. She was part of the punk scene via The Slits. She’s a renegade. Always has been. In addition to this track, she also had a global smash with the duet 7 Seconds with Senegalese singer Youssou N’dour. Her daughter Mabel is a successful young recording artist now too.
Wow, so she's swedish, but grew up in the US and picked up a British accent when she moved to the UK🤣
Great reaction! Neneh was born in Sweden but grew up in England. She has several other great songs... Manchild, 7 Seconds, Woman, Buddy X. Her debut album was the excellently titled Raw Like Sushi 🍣
🤣❤ the title
Raw Like Sushi was my anthem of 1989!
You found Neneh!!! She's groundbreaking!!
She's from Sweden but moved to London, that's why the british accent. Buffallo Stance is the late 80s, yes!!!
Please listen to Manchild, or her I've Got You Under My Skin!!! Both!!!
But there are quite a few gems oh hers,
7 Seconds, Buddy X, Woman, Money Love amf many more!!! Enjoy:))
Oh wow so interesting
Neneh had swag before anyone knew what swag was..fantastic!
Forgot about her! Shes a hot biracial girl from England jaja, lots oh cool songs from her. Nice songs and music videos. From the late '80s and '90s. She's actually started in a punk rock band The Slits. So she has both the punk and rap attitude, tough girl! Her brother Eagle Eye Cherry was a singer guitarist in an alternative rock band in the '90s and '00s. Her daughter is also a R&B singer in England in current times.
A Grammy nominated track. Her father is a famous jazz musician. I loved this track. Back to college. Billboard top five
Interesting ‼️
"Buffalo Stance" is a song by Swedish singer-songwriter Neneh Cherry, released in November 1988 by Circa and Virgin as the first single from the singer's debut album, Raw Like Sushi (1989). The song peaked at No. 3 on both the UK Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100, and it reached No. 1 in Cherry's native Sweden and the Netherlands."
Neneh Cherry is a great artist. You might easily mistake her for a one-hit wonder (especially when seen from the US), but she has had a very interesting career and output. In later years her music has been more electronic/trip-hop than pop/hip-hop, which is kind of a return to sources since she was involved with trip-hop pioneer band Massive Attack in the late 80s. Her stepdad was free jazz trumpeter Don Cherry (she took his name).
She sang for avant-jazz group Rip Rig & Panic in the late 70s/early 80s too.
And her brother is eagle eye cherry
Dang, idk who any of the ppl who are referenced are 🤣 let me google
@@EmpressReacts Also check out her daughter Mabel who's had several hits in the UK.
And sister Titiyo...
Her debut album is BRILLIANT!!!! You have to listen to this entire album.
For the record, she does the "Buffalo Stance" at 4:45. Its basically the same as a B Boy stance lol
Oh cool
I remember when this song/video came out round '88, semingly out of nowhere, and it getting lots of play on the radio and being a big hit! Neneh, who came out the blocks sounding strong & confident, and looking beautiful and vibrant, brought a new and refreshingly different energy, style and swag to the game...and it wasn't half bad to see a Black (African-Swedish) women dominating the charts / MTV for a change! She also has a brother, Eagle Eye Cherry who had a little Alt hit in the late 90's. And apparently, from the comments below, a daughter named Mable with some recent songs, hits(?) - Guess I'm too old to know 'bout young folk music:) It was fun watching u react to my pick - Thank you! 😁
Thank u for selecting a 🔥🔥 pick 😎❤🤗🥰
Good thing that you didn't hear about Mable.. she's far from the standards that her mother set.. she's garbage..
I love this entire album...It's great. I especially love Heart. Great selection Empress !
Ow ! A Swedish production that I love - Great
all female rappers of now should listen to this and learn from it. in the 80s salt n peppa, wee papa girl rappers and neheh cherry rapped with passion, now it is all me, me, me, all attitude and little delivery.
This was in '89. She was the bomb and this song was the jam... worldwide.
Yeah Nenah was so fresh and cool when she came on the scene. I'm sure she done this song on top out the pops when she was pregnant. She rocked it. Beautiful girl as well.
Thank you
I remember this song from when I was a freshman in college I only listen to classic rock but I liked this song when it came out thanks empress brings back good memories
Ironic you chose this song. It references and is inspired by Malcom McClaren’s Buffalo Girls. Malcom was the first to reference Voguing in pop culture with his song Deep In Vogue. The second was Madonna with Vogue.
Wow, interesting ‼️
She’s one of my favorites! I love « man child » and « under my skin » she was a trailblazer for a lot of hip hop artists! Her sound was raw and fresh.
From what i see 💯
Still sounds raw and fresh

I'm always gonna be down for a flight jacket & a pair of door knockers.
This is always good whenever you put it on.
🙌 NENEH! 🙌 (you pronounced it correctly)
“Is she British?” That question is more complicated than it seems. She’s actually Swedish with a North African father. Her parents split early and her mother remarried to jazz musician Don Cherry. Neneh was raised in the USA and England, so she’s truly a child of the planet.
I’ve often thought M.I.A not only resembles her a little but that their music feels like it has some inspiration genealogy.
You would LOVE so much of her stuff. And her as a person! So strong and authentic. If you want more of Neneh the singer (her vocals developed into a mid to higher range jazzy voice with real emotional power), have a listen to her song Seven Seconds (a duet with incredible Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour), and one of my favourite songs of all time: Woman. The video for Woman is absolute brilliance, with such a clever visual metaphor for the disregard shown by so many men for a woman’s experience.
When you hear her really sing you’ll see what I mean about her being in a similar range to your vocals.
Neneh was the inspiration and prototype for Lauyrn Hill -- socially conscious hip-hop with female empowerment.
I can see it
Tropical the island breeze all of nature wild and free this is where I long to be,,Empress’s channel. 😉😉😀😀
Str8t up 🔥🔥🔥 its going on the playlist 🤣
@@EmpressReacts 😀. Glad you like. When you get to the 1989 album Like a Prayer. You gotta watch her perform Express Yourself live at the 1989 Mtv awards. 💣🔥🔥 Iconic performance! One of her best! 🙂
She’s amazing! From the album Raw Like Sushi. 1989 ❤️
She was born in Sweden moved to New York and then to England at the age of 15
You got the best reactions going! Brightens up my day! Thank you, Empress!
Wow, thank you
Review was spot on good breakdown you get it. This song was bangin back then
Making 🇸🇪 proud
I've watched alot of these reactions to this song, and yours is the best for explaining the different styles of music and how they blend. I was a teen back then, but I never heard this song till last week.
wow thank u!
Love Neneh. This song was on high rotation in the 80s. She's the sister of Eagle Eye Cherry. She's from Sweden and lived in the UK - if I'm not mistaken
Neneh Cherry (yes she's English, although born in Sweden) is awesome. Her album Raw Like Sushi is worth reacting to if you like Buffalo Stance. It was a staple for me growing, this album, and I still love it. It's funky as!
Her last album Broken Politics in 2018, I didn't really click with but I saw her live performing the album and it was friggin awesome!
Definitely check out her other stuff!
Her brother is Eagle-Eye Cherry and her daughter Mabel is also a singer.
Cool thanks for the recommendation
wow these patreon posts are 🔥 today! Neneh was born in Sweden but moved to the UK in her teens... this song was huge back in the day (I think it was 1988/89)
💯💯
the background dancers steal the video
yassss! Neneh Cherry is awesome, i grew up with her music as my Dad was a huge Fan. 7 Seconds was his favorite song.
Love this! She's the mother of recording artist Mabel.
Sounds like he had great taste 😎
@@EmpressReacts He did. He loved En Vogue as well since i just saw you react to that. He was a funky Dad
Neneh Cherry is Swedish. Her stepfather is jazz musician Don Cherry and her brother is Eagle Eye Cherry. React to her song Manchild please if you haven't already.
Awww man memories of summer of ‘89. She had another hit called Kisses on the Wind. Her album Raw Like Sushi is a recommended listen.
😆☺great album title
Another song I was obsessed with straight out of the gate. I already worshiped all the other female rappers of the 80's- Salt N Pepper, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, J.J.Fad, Anquette, etc...so of course I was ready for Nenah bringing her UK vibe to the mix. Your reaction was spot on as usual.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Such a good song. I'd listen to the album version though. This single version cuts out parts for time kinda awkwardly. The album version is obviously longer but the transitions are A LOT smoother and that instrumental build for the last chorus is everything.
Thanks for the recommendation 😀
The DJ is Mushroom from Massive Attack and her reference to the Wild Bunch were a bunch of musicians, DJs, graffiti artists etc all from my home city of Bristol, UK. This song reminds me of school so much!
If you want to hear a current UK female MC that's absolute fire then check out Lady Leshurr. No one can touch her.
This is a good song. Neneh Cherry has a song called "Manchild" that pretty good too.
I may check it out🧐
I love Neneh, this was her first big hit, she got more and deeper songs. My favorite is 'I got you under my skin', the song she made for aids awareness.
Oh wow that's good‼️
Girl Power in the 80’s
1989 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love Neneh Cherry.. her first album came out when i was 13...I had this 12" single...her first album is really good...it's called Raw Like Sushi...she also put out a new album a couple of years ago called Broken Politics
Girl, that song was HUUUUGE back then! It marked my best high school years.😢 Neneh moved from Sweden to Britain in her teens, that's why you've detected a British accent. Put it on your playlist, it'll grow on you the more you listen to it.
Next, check out Finally by Cece Peniston from around the same period, great song.
Cece is so underrated!
O M G cece peniston with finally is the best!!!!!
🆒️
Loved this back when it was released.. Knew every word.. My best friend and I used to dance and when this came on we would adopt serious faces and mimic the two girls in the background dancing at each other.. Haha.. This brought back memories
So 😎 🆒️
She has a daughter who sings. Her name is Mabel
Oh cool
The dj is Tim Simenon from bomb the bass. Bit of a genius
Her sister is called Titiyo and she had a really cool song called “Flowers”. Listen to the remix.
Thanks for the recommendation 😀
This was a childhood favorite song - I even had the cassette single in elementary back in the day. Summer of 1989 - this was my jam! Yes, there was a late 60’s hippie revival from what I recall in the late 80’s and later in the early 90’s when I was more of a pre-teen / young teen a 70’s revival. Such a unique song and sound. There is a pop element (and it was popular and Neneh could sing! ) but it had that urban, street edge that saved it from being commercial. There was a lil’ bit of that old school rap but nothing overwhelming. I like that it could appeal to a diverse crowd from the hip hop community to fans of electronic dance music (back then dance music had more substance as did pop on mainstream radio) giving it instant crossover appeal. I’d describe it as electro-funk. Ahead of its time really and forever cool in my book.
🗣🗣🗣yaaas to everything you said
Yeah it came out in the late 80s big hit at the club's x generation in full swing for those of us who are in our 40s and 50s ahh memories 😎😎😎😎
She collabed with British hip hop DJ/super producer Tim Simonen & she mentions him & his band(really just him) Bomb the Bass. She's pregnant & showing in the video, but they work around it.
ohhhhhh Neneh Cherry!!!! Love this . She also has a beautiful song with Youssou N'Dour entitled "7 Seconds." a must listen
Noted ✅
Please do also Manchild. It's a very unique song and was very popular here in Germany in the summer of 89.
Thanks for the recommendation 😀
Empresss I’m so happy to see you react to this. I clicked off a video I was in the middle of watching when I saw this suggestion on the side. You are right. This song is fire🔥 another great reaction girl!
🥰😇thank u‼️
Absolutely love this beautiful lady’s enthusiasm for music every time. This song takes me back to my youth… Neneh Cherry is Swedish born but grew up in the UK with a British accent.
thank u!!
@@EmpressReacts An absolute pleasure!
Yep was into this song in 1988 when it was released, an electro hip-hop sound. Another song that I loved that was released during that time was a pop R&B ballad ‘Make it Real’ by The Jets, who are a family band. They were also big during that era. Hope you get the chance to react to them🙏🏼😍
Thanks for the recommendation 😀
OMG this song is everything! Dua Lipa sampled it on her latest remix album. LOVE this!
Chile we used to love this in the hood!
Good to hear!!!! :) neneh rocks
I believe it🤣
Just like you the 1st time I heard I wanted to dance!
Loooovvveedd this one. What I remember most is I’d crank this one in my car.. and car speakers DID NOT like it.
There’s a cooking show from a chef Jamie Oliver that uses this as its theme song.
🤣🤣car speakers didn't like it
This song was real popular my sophomore year in college empress not my kind of music but I always liked it till this day there is something about it that’s different
I saw the video for this after school in 4th grade. I knew I liked gals at that point...no doubt about it haha
Top choice. I love Neneh Cherry a true artist. Yep, this was the second summer of love 1988. I was going to request Manchild or Inna City Mama next month. This woman has heaps of swag. She’s Swedish and lived between London, New York and family home in Sweden since 4. Step father is Jazz legend Don Cherry. Her daughter is current artist Mabel. Her 2018 album ‘Broken Politics’ is beautiful. Empress you nailed your reaction. When Triphop started Neneh was there. Massive Attack lived at her house when they were recording their first album, Blue Lines. I also loved Bomb The Bass, Tim Simenon who reworked this song, which her now husband originally recorded, , Neneh Cherry featured in that video and believe Naomi Campbell was in it too.
Yes!!! Bring all this knowledge to the people. Did not know Naomi was in the video. Inna city mama and manchild, and got you under my skin are also amazing from her
@@michaeldebree4870Yes, her Cole Porter cover for aids support was everything. Duet ‘7 seconds’ is epic too. ‘Kong’ is exceptional. There was a VHS ‘The Rise of Neneh Cherry’ showing her ‘Raw Like Sushi’ era, her energy and charisma had me sold from day one.
Wow a young Naomi, im here for it
Great song from a great artist. Check out her version of I Got You Under My Skin. So many remixes, but I love the funk of the original.
Her most recent album is lit
If you haven't heard 'Hey Ladies' by the Beastie Boys, do a reaction to that. It's such an entertaining song and music vid.
BIG CLASSIC / BIG RESPECT / OLD SCHOOL REPRESENT / FUCK NEW SKOOL
I love this song ❤️
🔥
Oh....btw Nenah Cherrey is Swedish!
Soooo dope, yo! This song tho!!! Always a big favorite and so underappreciated by the masses. But what do the masses know anyway??? I remember when this came out, but I don't remember hearing it on the radio much back then. It makes ya body move!
Oh wow ‼️ No radio airplay 🤔
This is a 1988 track. I like the song, just a bop! She is actually Swedish. Tweerking!!! ROFL you crack me up.
🤣🤣
Classic she reminds me of Monie Love(Monie In The Middle) think they are both from Europe.
It's A Shame! So good!
Never heard of her, i may have to listen to the song you referenced 💯
@@EmpressReacts She's an old school rapper, came to prominence with a guest spot on Queen Latifah's Ladies First.
Yes she British and her brother name Eagle eye cherry
Thanks❤
@@EmpressReacts You Welcome
A good challenge would be to not move during the whole track! ;-) Neneh Cherry is a very talented artist.
🤣
This is still an absolute tune!

You know her other song? Listen to them,... they are all really cool. 👍
Sooo good💣💣
@@michaeldebree4870 I actually don't know other songs by her. I gotta check sum more out eventually
@@duane_313 inna city mama, and manchild are her best. Then you have the more commercial Latin influenced kisses on the wind. Also cool,.... and buddy X,.. that also has a really cool remix version. Enjoy the Neneh journey.
@@duane_313 also listen to her version of I got you under my skin. That was a song featured on the red hot and blue album. That was an album with various artist to spread AIDS awareness. Amazing music video that won an MTV award
You got to listen to the entire album Raw like sushi !
She's Swedish.
Do a reaction to Neneh's brother Eagle Eye "Save Tonight" & daughter Mable "Finders Keepers"
Just came out when I was in 8th grade. This was one of the first songs that a lot of white kids got exposed to and had any hip hop foundation to it at all. At least until the next year when I was in 9th grade when I joined the football team and Athletics and our little advice squad was called the BMWs they're called the BMWs because we were black Mexican and white come get away with that s*** today but we were solid back then and we're all still friends today.
cool story
See her Kisses in the wind video!
I love the Spanish spoken part in the beginning of that song
✅noted
I loved this song when it came out. She was really taking off but then I heard she had to cancel her tour because she had Lyme disease and then didn’t hear much from after that. She is British.
dang, that's sucks
No money man could win my love
It's sweetness that I'm thinking of~~~~
As always, superb analysis. Great job, Empress!
She has a heavy British accent when she talks.
You do understand this song is about Lenny Kravitz
Rihanna's Rude Boy video was obviously inspired by this video.
😳ooooo so true 💯
She was such a babe
Nothing will ever be as fly as the 80s now there trying to remake our music we grew up on and it sucks and it’s just rooted l, and btw the song is from the 80s lol
That song is still a vibe 💯

Wow! I Purchased this cassette tape when I was about to enter into university here in Florida. However, my new college mates hated her and hated her music!! They felt it was “fake hip-hop.“ Plus, they thought she looked like a dirty drag nasty gutter skank… well, she didn’t last but I just thought she was so cool and I still have her music today… Neneh was so much fun!!!
Wow fake hip hop - dirty drag - they were trippin
