  • This live performance of hill country blues legend R.L. Burnside was recorded by Dutch J. den Hollander on May 4th 1993, at the Amsterdam home of Ko de Korte on the occasion of his 50th birthday.
    In 1989 Ko, who has been a lifelong blues lover, travelled to the Mississippi Delta with his blues friend Tom Haarsma and recorded RURAL BLUES 1989 which can be viewed here: vimeo.com/109335731

    Old school blues doesn't have a rigid structure like we made it. They change the chord whenever they feel like it, not 4 beats of this and 8 beats of that every time.

      OMG the old school blues are the least rigid of all the genres. These folks have surprises around every corner. They never play a song the same way twice

      I saw R.L. Burnside in on Bleecker Street when I was 30 with Pine Top Perkins in THE West Village around 1993 and I remember having goosebumps from seeing someone who was the real deal and an innovater not an imitator as well as Albert King , Buddy Guy, Hubert Sumlin, John Lee Hooker..all in New York City circa 89 -2000 Mick Taylor former Rolling stones guitarist played every weekend for years at a bar with a huge lizard statue on top of the roof

    It is impressive to see this stage of R.L. Burnside, but what is most appreciated is to see Calvin Jackson, who drew the first patterns of the Hill Country Blues on the drums. Thank you!

I understand that Kinney Kimbrough was one of the first architects of this style, but it seems that there is a struggle between Hill Country Blues and Cotton Patch Soul Blues ... what do you think about this?
