This is the roots music of roots music. I can watch R L over and over. Check out 'Poor Black Mattie" as well for the way he inflects the lines and waits for the forth line in every verse. I've never seen a blues player do that, and it's brilliant!
His right hand is possessed. R.L. was truly the last of the great bluesmen. This one performance alone puts him up with the best of the best. Rumour has it his foot went on stamping for days after he died. The kid ended up drumming with him I think?
Johnny Cash once said that the rhythm of his music was heavily influenced by the rumble and the chug of railroad trains passing by in the night. You can really hear that influence in R.L.'s rhythm guitar style as well, don't you think?
R. L. Didnt grew up with trains around. As kid, while working in the field, rhythm sections use to roam the roads. With that big bass drum, smaller ones and some wind instruments. As kid he felt he would love to do that. I learned this from that documentary about hill countr Mississippi blues. Peace
It was very enjoyable to see the Burnside kids learning musicianship from such a master of that skill. One of his best performances with a great atmosphere.
I love his guitar n the way he approaches it That kid on the drums is awesome He can tell when RL is gonna change too Great stuff Recorded on my 11th birthday 🍀💚
Nothing fancy but I could listen to this man all day and night long! Anyone can play the blues but you need the heart and soul to make it genuine! This gets me bouncin around the house and my kids think im crazy eventually they are bouncin right beside me🎶
I never understood why RL never got the recognition he deserved. His music is 10x better than BB King or Muddy Waters and more raw. Only Robert Johnson comes close... though RL will always be the king of Blues!
He isn’t IN the groove, he IS the groove. I have a screenshot as wallpaper on my phone from this of him smiling in this , and like a year later it’s still there. Peace
there are few things in this world that i wouldent do for that guitar. i know its a cheap teisco but it did not come stock that way, he did some modding to it. and stripped the paint
Mi artista favorito. Su sonrisa era adictiva. Vato chingon al 💯💯 aunke mucha raza a lo mejor ni a escuchado de el. My favorite blues artist and I’m 41. Been listening to him for a minute before I learned to speak English.
I dont know if he is playing on tube amp but I have similarly small tube amp and it sounds clean unless gain on full. I wanted to express that such small tube combos which are clean sounding produces the best sound for me it does not get better than that, this simple tube driven clean sound ! More pedals, effects you add the worse it is. Only needed is some reverb and thats it. I never get bored of that sound. But when I add distortion, overdrive and fuzz pedals this overdriven sound it actually limits the sound and frequency expression so much and such distorted sounds.. I never seems to be satisfied I always feel need to tweak some frequencies, gain level, volume level etc all the time I am never satisfied for a long time, but clean tube driven sound is so rich in frequency, expression and warm and full I never feel need to tweak the sounds constantly and become bored with it. Clean tube sound with electric that uses alnico pickups just gives endless expressive sound openness and dont have any need to change the sounds, simple and most complex at the same time. The point is more distorted the sound more sound is actually weak and ruined. Yes clean sound if done properly is actually much more powerful and satisfactory than any distorted sound. JUst like we say of my head or mind feel so disturbed, or I have distorted perception or fuzzy head when we dont feel good but when we feel clear in mind we never feel bad its always good feel. Invention of distortion actually ruined the sound. Stay clean and clear.
I don't know... Sure... It's a ultra cheap Teisco, with a "What in the hell is that thing?" amp... But that cheap plywood plank is just oozin' mojo. It's a bit like Jimmy Page using a cheap Masonite Danelectro to write and always perform Kashmir. Plus... Sure... A Tele sounds way more "Pro", with more sustain, high end, and low end, but..., that great Tele tone is much more common and ubiquitous, as about a Bazillion great artists have used them on a Brazilion great albums and stages. Burnsides' old modded Teisco might not be considered as good an instrument as a Fender Tele, but it and that cheap assed amp give him a tone all his own that oozes mojo...
Hypnotic and enchanting music from the Buddha-like RL Burnside.
2:46 the baby in the background cries in key, the kid feels it too...
You can see in his smiles that he really loved to play, a modest man, but so raw as mentioned.
The way it should be. The blues that's sugar coated ain't the blues!
His smile is one of the most beautiful
This shit is so outstanding. I could listen to it all day.
fantastic. one of the most important blues recordings from the 70s
RL Burnside and JR Kimbrough both reinvented the blues in our time !
i think we are so lucky to have these video and audio documents !!
cheers !
Weird why this guy never went mainstream back in the day !!! his sound was BRILLIANT !!!
is.....is
He got some recognition in the 90's up to his death. Not as much as he deserved though
Because he was a full blown alcoholic. Son of bitch spent most of his most of his cash on booze

I saw RL open for Jon Spencer in Vancouver back in 1996. His grooves are spellbinding.
Give everything I own to have been stood in that field in ‘78
One of the best performances I've ever seen before you can't find stuff like this anymore I wish things would go back to being like this
Nothing fancy but I could listen to this man all day and night long! Anyone can play the blues but you need the heart and soul to make it genuine! This gets me bouncin around the house and my kids think im crazy eventually they are bouncin right beside me🎶

Grandson cedric burnside
If this was really recorded on the date the title says, Cedric Burnside would have been one week old.
I have no idea how old he is. Well I guess you are right, my bad it was an assumption on my part I will admit.
there are few things in this world that i wouldent do for that guitar. i know its a cheap teisco but it did not come stock that way, he did some modding to it. and stripped the paint

Now thats what you call the Blues....
I like the tone of the Tele he played in the eighties much better than the guitar he's playing here.
I don't know... Sure... It's a ultra cheap Teisco, with a "What in the hell is that thing?" amp... But that cheap plywood plank is just oozin' mojo.
