Thank you so much Aaron for the video.. I am showing my 16 year old son how to work on a vehicle and soon I will be passing this truck down to him. I’ve always told him if you want the Job done right you must do it yourself.
I have a 183,000 on my shocks so I say they're done and you said on the front sharks out the installment you have to have the front end aligned thanks for the video it helped me out a bunch
Great video! Just finished on mine. Really was as easy as it looks although I don’t have an impact. Didn’t even need a jack! My shocks didn’t quite line up so I had to cut them loose early, it wasn’t too bad to push them back up though
I bought some Rough Country 2 1/2" Vertex 8-stage adjustable piggy back shocks for my 2014 Chevy Silverado with a 6" lift. The aluminum bushings on top and bottom don't fit back into the fixed bracket on the truck. Can I just bend them about 3/16" so then the top and bottom slots will slide into place. I ended up trying what I mentioned above and it worked like a charm. It took alittle strength but got r done. This process will not affect the mounts, will it? Other than the obstacle I occurred, it's ab easy job.
Ah-ha! So the top bolt doesn't have a nut on it. I'm trying to figure out why the nut side was so obscured and how I will ever get a wrench in there, lol. Makes sense now. Thanks.
The nut is tack welded into place. It's not removeable. Just unbolt top and bottom ,then slide your new shock into place and reattach bolts, cut the strap and you are golden. Torque you bolts to 85 ft lbs. 😅
What would u suggest for when I put the shocl absorber in and I got the top to go in fine it the the bottom one from gm they have it compressed already witch is stupid on passenger side
I did a search for bilstein 5100 and (don’t have the link) two or three videos the guys said bilstein said the body of the shock goes on top and the boot goes on the bottom. I’ve been really wanting to buy these and I plan to install myself so I’m curious to know what’s right. I downloaded the manual from bilstein and it wasn’t helpful.
From what I have read it can be mounted up or boot side down. Seems they can go either way. The eyelets are the same diameter so that part doesn’t matter. Thanks for the info!
Per Junior, a Bilstein racing parts specialist, he says that the Bilstein logo is intended to never be upside down. If the logo is ever upside down, the shocks are installed incorrectly. For the 5100 series rear shocks that means the boots go down toward the road. Just some info for you all.
Took our Silverado in to the stealership for some recall work, and during their "free multipoint inspection" said the rear shocks were bad and quoted me $800 to replace them. What a bunch of clowns. Including a trip to the hardware store for a 21mm wrench, this job was done in a couple hours!
Hi Aaron, I have a 2018 Silverado 1500 crew cab LT and I dropped the rear 3 inches. Do you know the model or part number of the shocks I need to install in it? The manufacturer shocks are bumpy now due to the lowering. Thanks in advance.
I highly suggest not torquing them down with an impact as this video shows. I would look up the torque value from gm. Also, torque the nut and not the bolt.
I'm experiencing excessive fish-tailing specifically in the rear of my '15 Sierra A/T when I drive over a caliche road that has tractor tire tread indentations on it. It doesn't matter if I go 10, 20, 30mph its still a white-knuckle experience and the whole truck bounces like crazy. I bought it about a month ago, noticed it has rancho shocks on it that i think are likely original shocks for this upgraded package that the previous owner customized at the dealership. It has 77k on it, I do haul wood and bags of concrete at times and honestly it rides like a DREAM when the shocks are fully compressed under load even with an additional 300lbs in the bed. It feels sturdy, grounded, and secure then. Also on pavement it feels great for the usual takeoffs, lane changes etc but when I turn and hit a dip there is plenty of bottoming followed by a sharp jolt back up coming from the coilover shocks. Any idea what I can do? I dont know if i should bag it, 4-link it, or just upgrade to Fox, King, or higher-end Bilsteins. It's not lifted and I dont plan to. I'm just curious as to your thoughts and if you (or anyone reading) have any recommendations and if my assumption of "they need replacing before I die" is true lol. Thanks
Hi Sammy, not sure if you found the answer but I have 2018 gmc sierra with only 30k kms, my truck bounces of the speed beakers like crazy, on highway speeds it bounces on road indentations like it has no shocks, it had rancho shocks which in my opinion should not even be called shocks, i have upgraded front ones this week with bilstein 4600 24-238281 model and let me tell you it has made day and night difference with ride quality, i am changing rear ones next week as well. good luck
So if I installed the Bill Steen shocks on my 2018 Silverado 1500 4x4 I can raise the vehicle up two inches front and rear? Sounds like a good way to add stability and increase the height? What do these shocks cost and is the front application as easy as the rear? I have a 2 1/2 inch level kit installed in the front of my truck already, would this affect anything? Do you plan on doing a video on the front installation anytime soon? Being unfamiliar with this type of thing could you recommend the model numbers ? Liked and subscribed Thank you
No, it will not lift the rear of the vehicle. All it does is allow the shock to extend further and compensate for any rear lift you may have installed. Basically keeps the shock from bottoming out if you have any lift in the rear.
Should be boot side down if you look at the boot there are holes for drainage because they’re supposed to be facing down call bilstein yourself and aske them what’s the proper way to install I bet my left nut it’s bootside down
Yes depends on part number, I called and they said the letters need to be facing upwards where you can read them, in this case boot goes down, just replaced mine today like that
Hey bro I installed these 5100’s and I have a very noticeable clunk noise in the front when going over bumps or making tight turns.....any experience with that or what it might be?
@@blazeone1266 it's probably the center nut on the top of the strut. Very common with these shocks. I guess what happens is that you have to tighten a little more than most people do. Careful not to break it though, as I did. Seems a lot of people have the knocking and banging over small bumps and this seems to be the only fix.
Thank you so much Aaron for the video.. I am showing my 16 year old son how to work on a vehicle and soon I will be passing this truck down to him. I’ve always told him if you want the Job done right you must do it yourself.
This is a darn good instructional video. Dude is not a Jamoke trying to be funny like so many others. Thanks for making this!+
First time doing shocks! I bought some Billstein 5100 shocks for the Sierra. Thank you for the informative video and demonstration!
Does it ride better i need to get new ones but if the ride isn't better then
@@JasonY02what did u end up getting?
@@Amokof I went with Bill Steen 5100s but to be honest, I would’ve gone with fox or something different because the 5100 still ride kind of stuff
@@JasonY02 when u says stiff, do u mean harsh? I dont mind a slightly firmer side, but is it bearable on the highways or uncomfortable?

Good reflects lol
Awesome, thanks for the video! Saved me $425 from having them installed at the dealer.
I do believe those are upside down. According to Bilstein the logo should be right side up. Some shocks were designed to have the boot facing down
they are monotube they can mount in any direction
Well done thanks for the demo so what if my truck has a 6 inch lift is there a certain shock i need to install in replacement of the originals
I have a 183,000 on my shocks so I say they're done and you said on the front sharks out the installment you have to have the front end aligned thanks for the video it helped me out a bunch
Going through this process with my '16 Silverado now ... front and rear. Awesome videos on this topic. Thank you!
How do u like them? Are they harsh on the highways?
@@Amokof Aside from local mountain driving (and logging roads), I drove a few hundred highway miles. No issues so far.
Wow! that's the easiest replacement I've ever seen. I'm going to do mine's now. Thanks brother
Thank you very much! Very helpful, saved time and a lot of cash.
Didn't even need a jack.

Just installed a set of 5100's on mh silverado. I wish they were still the yellow and blue colors.
I have a sierra Denali 1500 they say my rear shocks have a sensor cause it’s a magnetic drive do u know which ones I need
I have same question because huge price difference in the parts
Would having a jack make it easier?
I have the Bilstein 5100’s on my Titan. Very happy with them. KYB are great shocks too, have those on my Vette.
Nice! I put bilsteins my wife’s xterra and they rock.
Will these fit in the denali with magneride I know there’s no sensor but are the dimensions the same and bolt patterns the same?
How many ugga duggas when tightening??
How did you remove the top bolt, same process as bottom ?
Is there supposed to be a nut for the top bolt?
It's welded to the frame
Ah-ha! So the top bolt doesn't have a nut on it. I'm trying to figure out why the nut side was so obscured and how I will ever get a wrench in there, lol. Makes sense now. Thanks.

So no need to jack up the truck? Also how do you adjust height on shocks?
You don’t need to jack the back end up?
How do you do the front and what kind of struts to get for stock height
Have new Fox 2.0 coming tomorrow. Any reason to support the axle or anything while changing.?
Mine did not have 21mm bolts, mine are 13/16. Also if the boot goes down, then why do the put logo decal on since it would be up and out of sight?
Those were easy to compress, the KYB’s gas-a-just are a sun of a gun to compress
So you don't have to jack the truck up when changing the rear what about front ? And do you have to get an alignment after replacing the shocks
You won’t need to jack up the rear but year u will need to for the fron. Only alignment when changing fronts
@@AaronHinesAuto thank you
Will this bilstein shock work on my 6" rear drop on my truck??
What would u suggest for when I put the shocl absorber in and I got the top to go in fine it the the bottom one from gm they have it compressed already witch is stupid on passenger side
I think you installed the bilsteins upside down. I hear the boot goes on the bottom. I could be wrong but that’s what I’ve seen on other videos.
They do not go on the bottom. Do you have a link to this video?

Hey Aaron, I have a 2015 GMC 1500 Sierra Denali. Would the Bilstein 5100 fit my model, given that it’s still a 1500 Sierra?

What did you torque the rear shock bolts to?
rear shocks are 70ft lb
Do you need to jack up the rear end to replace the rear shocks or can you do it with the tires sitting on the ground?
you have to aline the car after doing the rear or no?
no
Torque spec's what are those??!
So do you or do you not need a jack to replace the shocks for the rear ?
Don’t need a Jack

Nope - Shocks can not make a truck lower.
