How to build a simple set O scale Locomotive Roller Stands
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- Today I'll show how to build a set of O scale locomotive roller stands. Pretty simple to make with common garage and modelers tools. A fun and easy project that will be rewarding in the end.
The roller bearings are 14mm or 16mm x 5mm x 5mm - available on amazon, search for skateboard bearing and you'll find a lot of choices. The 5mm, 4mm bolts and L bracket were from Lowes.
The metric drill/tap kit was from Harbor Freight.
My website dedicated to the layout with more information on how the layout was built.

Saved some money for sure
@@djbbuck6941 sure does. Nice little project too.
Fantastic idea!
Thanks, an easy project.
This is a great idea! Thank you so much for sharing this. 😊
Thanks for watching and your comments. If you build use the 16mm bearings. The wheel flanges will have a bit more clearance. 🙂👍🚂
@@baldypalmsrailroad Thank you for the updated information. It’s greatly appreciate it my friend. Frank
@@TwistedMacGyversTrains I also found that using superglue between the angle brackets, and the plastic bottom piece works better than thread and screwing them together.
@@baldypalmsrailroad Much appreciated!
I really enjoyed your build. I plan to follow your technique and build some. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Mike, glad to inspire you into building some.. 👍
Love this DIY approach AND save around $80 ish. Thanks !
@@timhuston9232 it’s a good and fun project. Enjoy. Thanks for your comment. Ron//
Great video! Thanks for the information! Thanks for sharing! Have a great and awesome day!
Thanks! You too!
Great idea Ron. Thanks for sharing !
Thank you Dan 🚂
Yea man! They are slick!!!! Just think people buy them. Very cool
Yup ya never know, make something folks don't know they need... 😀🚂
Thats right! @@baldypalmsrailroad
That was cool, hood Idea...no need to take it out to the layout for a test spin. Lol
Yup - make for easy testing and trouble shooting.
great video.. now I'll see if i can make them for HO/OO scale, but i do believe the roller bearings will be smaller...
Yes probably, so you are able to space the roller bearings close together to you don't have to deep of a wheel pit.. Best of luck on you project. Skål!
Thanks for your video have been trying to locate the plastic you use where did you get Please. Thanks for your time. And have a Happy new Year.
Thanks Larry, the plastic I got from my shop at work. Tuesday I’ll check to see if we have more. You don’t need much. If we have more. I can send you a piece. I’ll get back to you on Wednesday.
HNY! 🎉🚂🙂
@@baldypalmsrailroad that sounds great I’ve got most of the parts Thanks for everything.
@@larrybenham8421 I forgot to get back to you on the plastic, I’ll check on Monday, I made reminder.
@@baldypalmsrailroad ok thanks.
@@larrybenham8421 Larry, I have a piece 12” long, should be enough for at least 6 rollers. Email me at

These are awesome and I'm going to make my own sets, but I have a question. Are the hole spacings/locations in the L brackets for the roller screws and spacer screws the same? In other words, are both sets of holes 3/16" from the "top" edge and 3/4" apart?
It been awhile since I made this video, and I was looking back to see if I had any of the original footage. The bearing holes I believe were 3/4" apart, you want them close enough as to not touch each other and the the locomotive wheels ride above the L bracket. I also did a modification to the lower holes to the bracket and the plastic spacer. I did not make holes here. I simply glued the plastic to the aluminum bracket. I took a wheel set and used this as my template when gluing the two L brackets to the plastic spacer/base. I used super glue. Gluing gave you a more precise alignment of the wheel base spacing of both brackets. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching and commenting. These are very handy, I use them all the time... Let me know how things work out on your project.. 👍😊🚂
🌴 Wow: Very cool project. Now just get the patent and become a millionaire 😎

Yup... Ya never know..
What are the dimensions of the plastic, and how did you space the holes? That part was a little unclear
Andrew, the dimensions of the plastic is 1.25” wide and 1.50”long.
Don’t worry drilling holes. The last two roller stands I made I used super glue to secure the plastic piece to the L bracket with the roller bearings. You line up everything much better this way.
@@baldypalmsrailroad ah, that sounds a lot easier. thanks!
If you send an email to info on my website I can send you a photo example.
@@baldypalmsrailroad I think I can figure it out based on what you said. Appreciate it, though
How are you handling power from the center rail?
I just alligator clip a wire to one of the locomotive pick up rollers to the center rail. I also put a piece of electrical tape over the center rail as precaution.
Ron//
How much would you charge to make one?
Tommie, good question.. I'd have to see how much the parts are. I have not been asked to build something for a follower. I'm flattered. I'll have to get back to you on the parts and material. Also the shipping costs. Ron//
I'm still super interested in this. I would be honored to have a piece of your work.
if not in a big rush, I'll work on a set for you. A set of 5...
@@baldypalmsrailroad thank you so much!
Ron, how much was it for a set? Interested in making my own, so that I can make enough for my big boy? For the parts that is, if it's not too inconvenient, can you add the parts list somewhere, I am have issues reading it, while watching how to make them
