To be honest, and not trying to bash on anyone, Ryan and Linus in my opinion are the best combination for this two man show type, and I find it better than both of the shows these guys have alone.
They would be able to do that, but devs rather put more effects in their games and brainwash their audience with "filmic look of 30fps" BS. I think Sony and Microsoft are involved in that, because they want their products to seem to be on par with pc. Which clearly isn't the case.
PS4 can't even handle Last of Us remaster at 1080p60fps with high res shadows so it's not a surprise that it can't handle "next-gen" at 1080p60fps. Xbone is even worse.
NonsensicalSpudz ignorant mook, PS4 doesn't run most games at 1080p 60fps, it's in the same league as Xbox in terms of performance, it's better than X1 but nothing to brag about at all.... Unless of course you're a fanboy, then you'd brag about anything.
I'm pretty sure PC Perspective is a much bigger company than LMG, if anyone was hiring someone, it would be the other way around. Unless you mean contract instead of hire, that might work. Not sure if Ryan would have the time for that, though.
@Linus, you might be confused a bit there, at the end. Using IRC doesn't mean using a fully different server, in this case it means using the Twitch IRC server itself. Their whole chat is based on IRC. By using an IRC client to access the twitch chat, you're not breaking any partnership requirements, you're just using a different front-end for the same chat.
I notice the choppyness of 24fps in movies, the Hobbit's 48fps was perfect imo, if you agree I recommend you to look up SVP (Smooth Video Project), it's not native 48fps, but it takes any video you throw at it and artificially doubles the frame rate. It's pretty damn nice.
Honestly, a locked 30PFS is not the worst thing ever. Its certainly not optimal but as long as the frame-rate doesn't fluctuate up and down all the time then its still playable to me. However Ubisoft's recent statements are some of the purest bullshit I've ever heard from a game company. Every time I hear a GAME developer talk about being cinematic I want to rip my hair out. This is a fucking video game, not a movie.
niq872 30 FPS is unacceptable for me when I'm playing on my PC but for some console games, I can get over it if the game is good enough. The cinematic excuse is laughable. What the hell kind of PR is that?
I *wish* I could bear 30fps. But my 120Hz monitor made 60fps seem only decent. I actually used to be able to bear 30fps with my old computer but now it's sort of like 60 is the new 30 for me.
They should have 2 options for the graphics on consoles, One with 60 fps and lower graphics And one with 30 fps with Higher graphics. Ubisofts next step is to cap ALL their games on pc to 30 fps.. Let The Mods/Hacks Begin!
The Last of Us Remastered proved that this can work. In this day and age if consoles can't hit 1080p 60FPS as a standard then at least let me pick one of the two (although I personally would ALWAYS pick 60fps over 1080p)
allotheabove123 It is Very depending on the game, The Textures play a pretty big role on the resolution, So with less meshes and objects Or simply smaller textures 60 fps is pretty reachable. I cant run battlefield 4 at higher than 40 fps With Everything that is graphicly intensive And not CPU intensive turned to High On my gtx 660 But i can run The Shadow Of mordor at 60 fps at close to all times with Everything that is Graphicly intensive turned to high/ultra and keep 60 fps at all times Exept in the strongholds.
Was it just me or did anyone else see the irony in Linus saying "apparently the source video is only out of sync, switch to something lower and it will be fine" when he had just been slating Ubi for thinking low fidelity video is acceptable, Haha. The source video is what you use for the archive, Linus, and so now it is out of sync, wtf??
Linus, I have to disagree with you about the console life cycle. You (among others) keep saying that this generation will be short b/c of the console specs. While its true that the PS4 and Xbone aren't very powerful and are already being pushed to the limit, I don't see Sony and MS turning around another console very soon. The people who bought these consoles will not be okay with a short generation and Sony and MS know that. What we're likely to get is a generation of 900p and 30fps for at least the next 4-6 years.
900p is not a deal breaker for me but FPS definitely IS. Sacrificing in certain places is noticeable when you run through a game sometimes but sub par FPS is noticeable the whole time, especially when an open world game is locked at 30.
1328x1080 will just be the internal rendering resolution. It will have absolutely no effect on the aspect ratio or the display resolution. Anyone that has used a console emulator will know what I'm talking about, it's the exact same thing.
Linus the WAN show was great as always. Can you please in future do a x99 vs z97 performance comparison for gaming and productivity. Benchmarks in games and maybe rendering would be great between the two platforms.
LINUS!! If you take the time to read this comment sir I would very much appreciate it. If you could eventually get around to doing a comparison and benchmarks video of the gtx 970's from different manufacturer's such as msi, zotac, evga, and asus, finally concluding which one you think gives you most features or performance. Btw I chose my msi 660ti twin frozer from all the other models because you recommended it and I agree it's a great card for the price/performance ratio and im looking to upgrade onto this card the gtx 970.
Wondering if its anamorphic widescreen? Do consoles support that? eg movies shot at 1440 x 1080 are stretched to 1920 x 1080, it reduces file size with acceptable quality loss.
If games are to be more cinematic, then we should pay the price of a movie ticket. 10 dollars per game is so much more cinematic than 60, am i right guys?
Does nobody remember the Droid Razr MAXX? (since we are talking about battery life) That phone was top-tier at the time and got 2 and some users 3 days of runtime before having to charge.
The bubble free stuff is not hard. you can get tempered glass screen protectors on ebay for about £3 or $5 and they are bubble free. They may not be as scratch resistant, but they do work if you drop it
I think that upscale thing is gonna work something like rendering a horizontally shrinked version of the frame in that weird resolution then upscaling that frame horizontally
I know your job isn't easy Linus I just wish I had your job, or to be as far along with my business as you are in yours. My first video was your LanBoy case review and it's great to see how fare you've come. Even though I don't know you personally I am proud that you've made it this far. I also hope to build my business and get as far as you have. And I'm using Squarespace to do my website off your recommendation. Once it's up I will send you link. Love the video and I like the guest you had on the show lately, think its a nice addition.
Linus you have to admit your job is easy compared to people that have incredibly hard labor jobs, you get to sit in a comfortable chair in the air conditioning. It's not easy, but it is comparatively easy.
Well I agree with your seemingly clever sense of humor, ASSinine ( and yes I incorrectly spelled that word on purpose) people like Mark don't deserve any more attention than they have plagued mankind with already. That's like trying to kill a fire with gasoline and spraying it with just straight oxygen.
So I did the calculations for the iPhone 6 battery question whether making the phone a little bigger would make the battery bigger enough to exclude the con of size... It turns out that with a ~5% width and depth increase the battery would be bigger by aproximatelly 11.7% better... Here is a pic of the calculations. Battery numbers are: stock 1810 -->2118 Imgur link : imgur.com/LelpWTG
I run the original battery until I can not get more then 8-12 hours of life in them. Then I upgrade to a hi capacity battery which requires an enlarged back plate. Those usually last a day or two before needing a charge. That usually lasts until 2 years ends, and I buy a new cellphone.
On the note of Canadians getting ripped off, console games here are 69.99 ($70) and with tax I'm paying just over $76 for a new console game. It's ridiculous.
They could not get the production of the safire glass to a high enough standard, and volume. Too many front was discarded because of not enough clarity. Next iPhone will have Safire glass.
Maybe it will not use square pixels in the rendering. Rectangular pixels could change aspect ratio and wouldn't reduce quality as much as just cropping it and going with a lower resolution.
"nVidia - The way it's meant to be played at 30fps" maybe if the community makes as much fun out of GPU manufacturers who support such BS they will push Ubi and other devs to drop this crazy cinematic idea and make real games again
Used to play League of Legends locked at 30 FPS since my laptop couldn't handle it. Then I upgraded to a PC that could handle 60 FPS (albeit not locked), and the difference was night and day! It felt so much smoother and more responsive that that my record improved dramatically... This is a NON-DEBATE!
Two of the self proclaimed smartest dues in the tech industry, and you are seriously sitting here getting confused about how a graphics scaler works, and how one might STRETCH an image on the horizontal plane in order to fill 16:9 aspect? Have you guys ever heard of a Panavision Lens? How it takes a wide angle image, and compresses it horizontally to fit onto standard 35mm film, and then when it is played back through a similar Panavision lens, that compressed image at 35mm 4:3, is stretched back to a widescreen theater aspect ratio. A video scaler doesnt have to work at a 1:1 ratio, or scale in all directions. It can just as easily stretch an image vertically, or horizontally, or any other direction i would image. I am sure that the folks behind Halo did a fair amount of testing to determine which scaling method produced more visually appealing results, and determined horizontal stretch was the most pleasing/less noticeable alternative. This is nothing new at all. Even the PS2 did this over 10 years ago. Look at the 1080i mode in Gran Turismo 4. It utilizes a vertical resolution line doubling with a stretch as well. They did some trick interlacing in the video buffer to produce the doubled vertical resolution, and then stretch it horizontally. If you look at two adjacent diagonal surfaces, you can clearly see the stretch happening in one direction. I am literally amazed that for people as smart as you guys are, that something so incredibly basic, that has been around for years, somehow escapes your grasp. It boggles the mind.
You cant be truly knowledgeable in a subject, if you arent intelligent enough to understand a basic concept of video scaling. They refer to themselves as "technology experts", that is claiming that they are an end all be all source for information. Clearly they arent when they cant get something so basic as that.
bigbuckoramma Neither one has referred to themselves as 'experts' secondly anyone can be misrepresented as unintelligent when presented with fields they are unfamiliar with, an expert car technician wouldn't understand computers. Lastly they specialize in hardware, not software techniques
bigbuckoramma I think they are confused whether the game supports it or not, since its a console release, they can't test it.And interlaced for a "next gen" console or current gen console is a disgrace
DavisSgt Go back and rewatch that segment. Linus spells out that it is running at 1080 vertical, but compressed horizontal. Ryan immediately dismisses it and asks "how can they do that", and proceeds to make the example of using a smaller vertical resolution that is in the same 16:9 aspect to what their horizontal resolution is. Linus again reiterates that they say they are going to do 1080 vertical, and Ryan comments that he doesnt believe it, and that it makes no sense, and Linus agrees that it seems odd. It isnt odd, and it isnt hard to understand. By keeping the vertical resolution high, and stretching the horizontal resolution with the scaler, they can still keep some improved fidelity, and remove some excess jaggies and pixelation that would exist if it was scaled 1:1 aspect such as Ryan had suggested. Rendering at an internally lower resolution, and stretching it to fit a particular aspect ratio has been done in consoles for years. Going back to XBox and PS2. Its even been done in some PC games as well, and is actually one of the features of NVidias super sampeling that will be coming soon to Kepler cards. So the fact they are so completely clueless about it, is pretty appalling. I also dont know were you are getting that anything is "interlaced", no one said anything about that on the next gen consoles.
12000mah battery bank. Sorted. I just carry one in my coat and plug in if i need the juice. Now my galaxy s2 can run for 7 days without hitting a plug socket. Add unlimited data (fair usage @ 1000gb a month) and i can watch UA-cam for very long periods with the only issue being my phone getting a little uncomfortably warm. I have a still running hp jordana 540. I keep it running because the battery life is about 4 days and its a good solitaire machine. It also has a Mame emulator installed :D
We have that already in Portugal. It's implementedd by the ATM (Multibanco in Portugal) implementers It's called MBnet and it's a virtual card service where you take your credit card (the real one) and you create virtual ones with limited value and life time. They have real world numbers and CVC but they are valid worldwide (almost) and your real card number is never revealed. You can define a "one transaction" only for higher security (I use them for internet purchases) or multiple transaction. It's VISA,MASTERCERD, compatible, blá blá blá, etc..
I'm thinking something like anamorphic 1080p for that weird aspect ratio. Rendering an image that is distorted vertically and then stretched to fit the 1080p display.
That was a good show. Not to knock Luke or anything, but having two guys who really know their subject matter and feeding off of and complimenting each of the points of view was super refreshing. Sometimes, with Luke, it's kinda like he just wants to be contrary or take some sort of condescending position just be difficult.... like talking to a woman or something. In contrast, both Linus and Ryan were high energy, positive and professional. You can always tell who the boss is by the energy they are willing to put in to promote and expand their livelihood vs. who the employees are. Linus and Ryan exhibit that kind of energy so from my point of view the experience was rewarding. The show was an hour and 45 min +/- and I have a pretty hard time paying attention to anything that long, (ok I was watching the archive so I could pause and do stuff that had to be done and stuff), but I was genuinely surprised when Linus claimed the end of the show was near. So, yeah, thanks Linus and all you guys at LMG for a really great show.
Thank god someone finally brought up that we're really just getting toned down GTX 970/980 parts instead of their "true" flagship card. Don't get me wrong they are both pretty good cards and currently put the hurt on nearly anything out there but if their mobile version is within ~25% of the desktop card then that means something wasn't done correctly with it. In mobile GPUs their main worry is heat so they have to have a very conservative TDP and if it's still getting "close" to a desktop card that doesn't have to worry about heat in the same way then they're not fully utilizing the chip or it was merely an adaptation of the mobile GPU to begin with.
Both console companies want a shorter life cycle because if your console refreshes every 2 years as opposed to 8, you can charge gamers more money more often.
Even if Phantom Glass guys were in my country, there is no LG support for my LG L90, so no thanks and no feedback possible. Most people here use LG because LG has good prices on their phones and good feature/performance & price ratio.
I'm pretty damn sure Crysis 1 already had sub surface scattering. Even CoD Ghost had it and I thought that was late. Now you are saying Unreal Engine is the first to do it... What?!
I dropped my Nexus 5, Screen in 1,000,000 pieces. Gorilla Glass 3 might be scratch resistant but just don't drop it... unable to repair... waiting for Nexus 6 "Shamu"

120FPS for the win
144Hz is the way to go man. 120 is just too low. :D
Hans wurst nooo :P 120 is enough for now :P Why should I pay 20% more for just 22Hz more ;p
***** He's joking bro
Lol, i have a 144hz monitor and it only cost me $300. I couldn't find any 120hz ones.
I want a 120 or 144hz monitor. I only have 60hz and no money for a better one yet

Haha 1328x1080 is just AS many Pixels AS 1600x900 but sounds like 1080 :D good move
But it's a strange format.
Wooooo!!! GO MATH!!!!!!
Just checked, 1338x1080 is slightly LESS pixels then 900p.
1328x1080 = 1434240 pixels.
1600x900 = 1440000 pixels.

Luke is on Vacation, he's not fires, HE IS ON PAID VACATION.
Yay?
You could fix it by rendering a squished image and allowing upscaling to correct it. Kinda like "stretch" on a TV.
Thats horribe. They must do something else
I am not sure, but I feel like there was a fraction of a delay for the sound.
+Paul k Linus did NOT fire Luke he is on a vacation...
source?
Jerry Li He wouldn't say it like that if it was true.
Lol true true
Jerry Li Source? It's a fucking joke m8.
Jerry Li Linus says so in the video?
That guy on the right side looks just like that Facebook guy. You probably should invite that one the next time.
*facepalm*. NO kid. Just no. Mark SUCKERberg is NOT allowed on this show. THis isn't garbagebook. Move on.
The BAN Show with Mark SUCKERberg, all day long then :)
Well I agree with your seemingly clever sense of humor, ASSinine ( and yes I incorrectly spelled that word on purpose) people like Mark don't deserve any more attention than they have plagued mankind with already. That's like trying to kill a fire with gasoline and spraying it with just straight oxygen.
is there a podcast version of this? if not there should be. i would love to listen to this on the way to class.
Luke should meet up with Dimitry from Hardware Canucks in Germany.
Guys, LUKE isn't sacked!!!
Is this available as a podcast? That'll be grrreat
wonder how those tires would work after you drive through a bit of mud ... and i hardens up .. could make for a serious wobble thats for sure.
Console peasants...

1:18:50 My bank (Swedbank) acctually provides such a feature. It's called e-card and while the implementation is really crappy the concept is great.
I hope Luke isn't fired won't be as interesting watching experience without him
Ryan Shrout is the Sam Harris of the tech world. He always explains things very sleek and very accurately. And he also has a similar tone to Sam.
The Nokia 6131 Flip Phone style, has the ability of close the phone and take a photo with the little screen.
Battery numbers are: stock 1810 -->2118

I think Nvidia should lock all games to 30fps just to make those devs take back what they said. It would suck for us though....

***** I think AMD might of actually crapped up their APU on the console just for the LOLZ...
I run the original battery until I can not get more then 8-12 hours of life in them. Then I upgrade to a hi capacity battery which requires an enlarged back plate. Those usually last a day or two before needing a charge. That usually lasts until 2 years ends, and I buy a new cellphone.
Xperia Z3 comapct is multi-day phone 2600mAh with 720p screen with 4.7 inch screen.
Review that Linus.
On the note of Canadians getting ripped off, console games here are 69.99 ($70) and with tax I'm paying just over $76 for a new console game. It's ridiculous.
WAN LAN, Thank you MAN.
There was DEFINITE audio d-sync. I can see it in the video and it's not my setup.
is it just me or does lynda.coms logo look exactly like black mesas logo
They could not get the production of the safire glass to a high enough standard, and volume. Too many front was discarded because of not enough clarity. Next iPhone will have Safire glass.
Maybe it will not use square pixels in the rendering. Rectangular pixels could change aspect ratio and wouldn't reduce quality as much as just cropping it and going with a lower resolution.
"nVidia - The way it's meant to be played at 30fps" maybe if the community makes as much fun out of GPU manufacturers who support such BS they will push Ubi and other devs to drop this crazy cinematic idea and make real games again
awesome episode, hope to see Ryan on the show more often soon, maybe he can bring Jeremy with him too lol
i thought Luke had some good input into linustechtips. But what do i know im only a honest listener, and now i hear of Linus's style.
Luke didn't get fired, its a long running joke between him and Linus. Just for all you asking.
This is an issue of knowledge not intelligence, also neither of them has proclaimed themselves as one of "the smartest dudes in the tech industry".
Ryan is a good co-host. Very knowledgeable - not annoying like Mr Vacation.
The high battery capacity phone is the Sony Xperia Z3 compact.
Linus have Logan from Tek Syndicate on the WAN show next week.
I remember my old non-smartphone Cell phone would go a week or 2 with out a charge.
Umm. you guys love fps, and delta curves. Can you register a delta curve versus an expected fps?
Rendering an image that is distorted vertically and then stretched to fit the 1080p display.
if the frame rate is under 60, I disable motion blur. :)
That unibrow is about a day and a half away from full "land bridge" mode... it's like the Bering Strait of facial hair.
Great show!
Wait wait wait... Doesn't the Xperia Z3 have a 2 day battery life
In Australia our AU dollar is around 98US cents but we pay double for games and software even if it is a digital download!
Both console companies want a shorter life cycle because if your console refreshes every 2 years as opposed to 8, you can charge gamers more money more often.
Sony C905 has a mirror type thing on the camera that allow you to line up a selfie as well as a real Xenon flash, not a regular LED flash.
WAN shows shouldn't be without Luke. No one wants to hear Linus complain about every single small thing for more than an hour.
would have been funny if you acted all secret when Ryan started about skype, like: "cut the stream, cut the stream"
Why would you buy a G-Sync monitor when you can buy a second graphics card and have all your games run at constant 60FPS with regular v-sync?
Even if Phantom Glass guys were in my country, there is no LG support for my LG L90, so no thanks and no feedback possible. Most people here use LG because LG has good prices on their phones and good feature/performance & price ratio.
I'm pretty damn sure Crysis 1 already had sub surface scattering.
Even CoD Ghost had it and I thought that was late. Now you are saying Unreal Engine is the first to do it... What?!
I live in Egypt and I pay for Steam games in USD... Steam lists everything in USD, Origin lists everything in Euro's.
***** Dynamically ? I've payed for steam games in USD for the last 10 years.
I dropped my Nexus 5, Screen in 1,000,000 pieces. Gorilla Glass 3 might be scratch resistant but just don't drop it... unable to repair... waiting for Nexus 6 "Shamu"
