honestly "start wherever you want" sounds best from someone who has never read the comics. i just get turned away when someone goes into super detail about where or how to start. i vaguely remember watching the cartoon as a kid, but i was a HUGE fan of the movies, and i've been going back through them with some friends that no nothing about x men, and it's been making me want to finally read the comics.
Great Advice in "start wherever you want 👊 I got into comics in the last 4yrs or so (quite late in my life lol). I started X-Man from the beginning in Mighty Marvel Masterworks Vol 1. I'll agree with you there that the older issues are sometimes difficult to enjoy, the panels may be smaller and and the colours a little too bright but I still enjoy them. Will need to check out some of your recommendations 👊👊
Started reading from Uncanny 1 back in May. First time reading any comics and I’m 42. I’m up to issue 202 now. I’m really enjoying seeing the source material for all of the tv/movies I’ve seen over the years. I literally just bought Life-Death II (saw it behind you) yesterday from a comic shop since I really enjoyed it when I read it.
@@mmdfj woah tats amazing mister. I thought I was the one who is late into this xmen comic franchise. I am 22 nd hv started uncanny xmen the 60s version just this June but it seems u hv watched the TV shows. I am a complete virgin whn it comes to xmen😂...haven't even watched the movies for which I feel bad on missing out something so great.
So I appreciate this video so much. I’ve been a lifelong comic fan but I haven’t read any X-Men comics (I know please don’t kill me) I’m a massive X-Men fan just never had the time for the comics. So I’m very much getting some comics for these heroes.
I'm actually getting into X-Men via the essential collections because I really like the texture of the pages and don't mind the lack of color. If anything, it makes it feel like I'm reading a manga. And I'm actually enjoying the Jack Kerby and Stan Lee run, I'm currently reading issue 5, and it's been a blast so far.
I started reading around the late 80s, just random comics I’d get from the store when I went with my grandma. I don’t think I got around to going back to the first X-Men comic until my early 20s, but I will say that I enjoyed seeing how these characters started as rough drafts that could’ve gone a number of directions and got molded into the characters they became by the late 80s. What ideas got discarded pretty quickly *cough* ProfessorXwantingJean *cough*, and what ideas became seldom-used powers, like Magneto’s low-level telepathy, and what things stuck of course. Or Beast who went from pretty much just a guy from New York with the accent and all to a brainiac (I think that turnaround was pretty fast, wasn’t it?). Anyway, fascinating stuff.
cyclops and gambit are my favorites. All the way back to the X-Men: mutant apocalypse super nintendo game. And also from the X-Men animated series when I was like 8yrs old.
How ya doing? Came over from Comics Are Dope's video on Comic Channels. I have also ran into this sometimes when people ask for starting point recommendations. Especially if it's an old title that has had many iterations thus many different flavors, pin pointing a specific jumping on point can be tough. Unless there's a new number one. Jump on the number one 😅. For me though just give me some old school Claremont 😁.
Been away from comics for awhile. I had random issues when i was a kid then read NYX/House of M era up through the renumbering and decided to drop, literally because they started the numbering over. Somewhere in there i went back and read #1-Giant Sized. I fknd it hard reading the 'mainstream' hero books after awhile because there is almost no real consequence to anything. Wait a few years and they reset or bring everyone back to life.
Your video deserves more views. I want to say that the biggest turn-off from X-Men was reading Uncanny 1 onwards. It was just... Dumb. Based on your description, I think that I'll enjoy 219 of Uncanny for action and New X-Men, because it sounds like something which involves thinking.
There was a trade paperback of days of future past released around 1989 when the classic X-men series got to those issues. Idk why they decided to print that one in a trade instead of it being in the classic line.
Money is the answer: it's a story title people recognise. The thing is that and dark phoenix should never be read as trades as they're payoffs for long ongoing stories.
Great breakdown 👍🏻. Those super terrible years for x-men is when Marvel was fielding with Fox. The main 616 Wolverine is dead during that period as well.
He wasn't dead for long and they immediately replaced him on the team with old man Logan. The dark times actually resulted in some of the best stories. Messiah complex is one of the best ever. As for the specific time period mentioned there are still a few gems "Magneto" solo "Uncanny xforce" "Cable & xforce" are all great.
I think the All-New X-Men from 2015 is a good starting point (Hopeless and Bagley). It isnt overwhelming with history or a large cast of characters and it focuses on one X-man as the center of the story. I think if you read that series you will get a basic understanding of the X-men up until then. The art (style) is dated is the only problem. X-Men Gold also has some good things about it as well but makes a better coming back to X-men point. I recommend Bendis Marvel comics to no one.
This guy here has some character. Comic-book-character. I am curious what he thought of the "Age Of Apocalypse" series where Legion kills Xavier and the buildup to it in multiple issues and then the changed issues afterwards.
Thanks! I’m not a big fan of much of the 90s stuff, honestly. I’ve only read Age of Apocalypse once, and I don’t remember having strong feelings about it either way. Plenty of people love it, though!
@@KurtWilliamsReviews Yeah, the 80's and 90's were largely my era of X-men. When Age of Apocalypse was done....it was a gargantuan deal at the time...especially since Uncanny X-Men, X-Men, X-Factor etc were literally halted for 4 months or so for those alternate reality ones. Really blew people's minds. I really enjoy your channel and watch your vids upon release. Great stuff man!
I didn't like the use of wide panels in the Astonishing X-Men. I think it was actually a major visual shift in comics creation that isn't talked about enough.

Starting wherever you’re interested is always the best option 👌

Impressive becuase the originals were garbage lol

Consistenly one of the best comictubers out there

Marvel epic collection and Omnis are my preferred way to read these classic stories

Comics are Dope is awesome! And Claremont is the GOAT
This guy reminds me of George Carlin with his comedic mannerisms, I love it.

What is the toy in front of the purple spiderman cover?
You mean the boba fett toy in front of the purple x-men cover? That’s an attacktix, one of the best games ever! His jet pack missile is spring-loaded.

Honorable mention if ppl want to get an origin story X-men season one hardcover

Perfect 👌
Chris Claremont. The end. Without Chris Claremont, X-men has no cultural value for posterity.
Claremont needed Byrne to make great comics, as soon as he left the book became and stayed bad.
