The Bakers (Beau Bridges, Jeff Bridges) allow one final audition: the brash Susie Diamond (Michelle Pfeiffer).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Real-life siblings Beau and Jeff Bridges star as the eponymous Fabulous Baker Boys. Musical prodigies both, the Bakers have long been teamed as a twin-piano act, with the less talented Frank (Beau Bridges) coasting on the skills of his brilliant younger brother, Jack (Jeff Bridges). Their career dwindling to nickel-and-dime dates in second-rate clubs, the Bakers decide that they need a female vocalist to boost their popularity. They select auditioner Susie Diamond (Michelle Pfeiffer), who in addition to being a gifted songstress is drop-dead gorgeous. The newly renovated Baker Boys act scores a success, which is inevitably threatened by Susie's growing popularity and by Jack's insistence upon pursuing an affair with the girl.

One of my favorite all time movies. Totally believable roles for both Bridges and Michelle Pfeiffer as well. The entire movie is good. It's just a good watch period. I haven't seen it in quite some time. It's right up there with Pope of Greenwich Village as personal favorites.

Google to be reminded that Jessica Tandy won the 'Best Actress' Academy Award in 1990 for “Driving Miss Daisy.” A lot of musically-inclined moviegoers had been rooting for Michelle Pfeiffer to win that Oscar for her “Susie Diamond” role - as lounge singer with “The Fabulous Baker Boys.”
Most everyone's favorite scene: 'The Audition' - and the evolving subtlety of The Boys' facial expressions, as they realize what's happening, starting the moment “Susie” selects MORE THAN YOU KNOW. “And play it slower,” she says at the opening. Then, at song's end, a simple “So?” - glancing at both of them, as she resumes chewing her gum.
That's Michelle Pfeiffer's actual singing voice - as coached by one of my longtime musical heroes - composer/arranger Dave Grusin - who played all the piano parts, instructing Jeff Bridges especially in how to make it look real.
There are several versions of this delightful scene at UA-cam. This one, the longest and “most viewed” is best, you may agree.
