These Are THE SAME GAMES? Same Game, Different Name

- Remasters and graphical updates to games are already good even labeled as such, but what if you're pitched a game as an all-new adventure or new entry in a series and it's really just a reskin of another game? We all now know that what we got in the USA as Super Mario Bros 2 was actually a game released in Japan as Doki Doki Panic. While that's one of the best known examples of same game, different name is not the only time it has happened.
Hudson's Adventure Island/Wonder Boy
Wonder Boy and Adventure Island are connected, but also distinct! They stem from the same 1986 arcade game called Wonder Boy, developed by Escape (now Westone Bit Entertainment). However, there are a couple of key differences:
Regions: Wonder Boy was the original title released for the Sega Master System. Adventure Island was a port of Wonder Boy for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and MSX2 computers. Since Sega wasn't a major player in the North American market at the time, Adventure Island became the more recognizable title in those regions.
Content: Adventure Island made some changes to Wonder Boy to avoid copyright issues. The main character was renamed Takhashi for the Japanese version (Master Higgins in the West) and some enemies and level designs were altered.
Star Fox/Star Fox 64
Star Fox and Star Fox 64 share a lot of core elements that make them feel like similar games. Here's a breakdown of their similarities:
Story and Characters: Both games feature the Star Fox team, led by Fox McCloud, piloting Arwing fighters to defend the Lylat System from the evil Andross. They also share the same cast of characters like Peppy Hare, Slippy Toad, and Falco Lombardi.
Gameplay Core: At their heart, both games are rail shooters with players piloting the Arwing through various stages, blasting enemies and dodging obstacles. They both emphasize maneuvering and using the environment to your advantage.
Mission Structure: Both games have branching paths where your performance determines which stages you reach later. This replayability encourages players to try different strategies and achieve different endings.
Tone and Style: Both games have a blend of action, humor, and cinematic storytelling. The iconic "do a barrel roll" line from Star Fox is present in both games.
While Star Fox 64 is considered an evolution, it retains the core aspects that made the original Star Fox fun.
Castlevania/Kid Dracula/Super Castlevania IV
Kid Dracula is a spin-off with a lighter, more comedic tone and focuses on Alucard, Dracula's son, and his mischievous side. It also features power-ups that transform Alucard into different creatures.
One of the funnest things about Kid Dracula is how they have incorporated levels from the very first Castlevania game into this title. You basically go through the entire first game in the first level, with terrific nods and references to the original game. You can tell that it was done out of love, but it was still lifted from another game.
Super Castlevania IV is generally considered a more refined and polished version of the original Castlevania with improved graphics, sound, and gameplay mechanics.
What games have you noticed are remakes or Sprite swaps of other games? there's a ton of games from Japan that got different licensing and characters here in the US. Let me know some of your favorites in the comments.

As a kid playing fire red, leage green, blue, made me mad as a kid.
Saying Starfox 64 is the same as Starfox is like sating A Link to the Past is the same game as The Legend of Zelda. Wild comparison and not true.
Totally true, the main difference is the all range mode, other than that Star Fox 64 is a remaster of the original.
@RoXolid The story is different. New characters. Different levels. New vehicles and completely new mechanics. A little different than a "cntrl c, cntrl v" job he suggests, and not at all a basic reskin like DDP to NA SMB2
Well we will agree to disagree. For me the have is virtually identical
The first stage of Castlevania appears in levels throughout the entire series, including III (once you finally arrive at the castle), Rondo, and Symphony.
My favorite thing about the first level of Kid Dracula is realizing that the stage music is a jazzy, happy version of The Beginning from Stage 1 of Castlevania III. It's possible to play it dozens of times without ever noticing.
Metal Gear Solid 2. It even says in the game that they were trying to replicate the "Shadow Moses Island Incident"/Metal Gear Solid. There were improvements but it's like The Original Castlevania to Super Castlevania IV. Still Great Job! :)
Starfox snes and starfox 64 are literally completely different games with different story, characters, a different andross fight, and everything. Saying theyre the same is saying super mario 64 is the same game as sunshine or galaxy. Lmao
Umm bro, tell me you haven’t played star fox 64 without telling me you haven’t played star fox 64. It would be like comparing resident evil 4 (2004) to Resident evil 4 (2023) similar, but not the same
Off the top of my head these are the same games:
Street Fighter 2 Special Champion edition for the Genesis is Street Fighter 2 Turbo from the SNES, the differences are the Genesis version has more turbo speeds and includes the arcade intro.
Dr Robotniks mean bean machine on Genesis wasn't released for the Megadrive in Japan, instead we had Puyo Puyo which was the original game and it was an Arcade game.
Probotector on PAL Megadrive systems, is Contra released for the Genesis and Japanese Megadrive and the same thing happened with the NES versions.
I had to look up the various names on Wikipedia, but I remember being surprised and confused that the computer gave I knew as Tower Toppler was also released on NES and Gameboy as Castelian, but was apparently originally called Nebulus.
I like Castle Excellent and Castlequest. You get 30 men for America and Cassette Save on Famicom.
The japan-only super famicom game Gundam Wing endless duel, never released in America is actually a reskin of mighty Morphin power rangers fighting edition for super Nintendo. It had came out like a year earlier, Gundam Wing endless game engine uses the same, just with many improvements and it's such a better game, a good example of where the reskin is far better than the first, because honestly that power rangers game gets boring, most people hate on it but I would much rather play the fighting edition that came out on Sega Genesis
Was that the case with Wolfenstein and Super Noah's Ark 3D?
Not quite but also yes. Less like the Adventure Island/Wonder Boy, but similar to Mario2/DokiDoki. ID licensed the engine and game to them, and they changed the sprites etc. wasn't the same devs, they just basically did a ROM hack with Noah's Ark.
Street Fighter II ultimate express redundancy edition
What about Wonder boy in monster world & the dynastic hero?
Metroid prime people said was gonna suck when came out but i new it was gonna be a banger but its nes remake basic the same game
Think of it its the same game but 3d
These are the same games despite different names, brand and what not:
Panel de Pon = Tetris Attack
Puyo Puyo = Kirby's Avalanche / Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
Street Fighter = Fighting Street
Biohazard = Resident Evil
Super Donkey Kong = Donkey Kong Country
Ranma 1/2 = Street Combat
Dragon Ball = Dragon Power
Dragon Quest = Dragon Warrior
Doki Doki Panic = Super Mario Bros. 2
Contra = Probotector
Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles = Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Super Star Pro Wrestling = World Championship Wrestling (WCW)
Seiken Densetsu = Final Fantasy Adventure
Bare Knuckle = Streets of Rage
Honor of Kings = Arena of Valor
Final Fantasy IV = Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy VI = Final Fantasy III
These were not good examples. Mario 2 is a literal re-skin of Doki Doki Panic, the others were just games inspired by their predecessors, or version differences.
I've lost count of how many times I've heard various different Castlevania games lazily referred to as "a remake of CV1" when none of them are anything close beyond the first level.
Cuphead and Contra 3. I'm convinced that Cuphead is a reskinned Contra 3: TAW
Contra has its own clone, Probotector.
Wow. I didn't know thet Castlevania 4
Link to the past and link between worlds. There's a lot of reused ideas.
It has the same map and a similar dark world gimmick sure but it's the direct sequel to link to the past, it's the same link and the same hyrule and everything
Conker...
Ea sports games, just swap around the rosters
