The flood never seem intelligent until the Gravemind made his debut. William C Dietz' novel that gave more narrative to Combat Evolved did an excellent job of portraying the flood as a knowledge-hungry parasite that was more than capable of wiping out the universe. Even though the novel reveals their intelligence and makes them seem even more terrifying than the game, the Gravemind in H2 felt like some kind of god, different from the Forerunners. Knowing that the Flood is a hive mind and that the ones we had previously fought were nothing but avatars for the Gravemind's conscience took their horror to an entirely new level. Honestly, the flood were so insanely well-written as the true biggest threat in Halo.

    • @DylanBegazo
      @DylanBegazo 5 років тому +66

Slays Media Guess what? The flood aren’t even from The Milky Way Galaxy. They are Galactic Foreigners/Galactic invaders. They arrived here from outside our Galaxy from somewhere else and then wreaked havoc on the ancient human San Shayum Empire during the Human Forerunner Flood War.
And guess what? Our closest Galactic Neighbor is The Andromeda Galaxy. And if the Flood are abundant enough to “leak” out of that galaxy and find jts way into our Milky Way Galaxy than that tells you Andromeda the Galaxy itself is a ancient Flood Infested staving ground for dispersal to other galaxies which is how it managed to arrive here all that time ago. So far in the Halo story, we’ve only dealt with a tiny sample of who knows how extensive the Flood have spread throughout the universe killing life wherever it succeeded.
And let’s not forget, The Primordial is a gravemind composed of infected absorbed biomass it acquired during its initial campaign against the Milky Way Galaxy. At some point, it absorbed a Precursor which gave the Protogravemind extensive knowledge on the Milky Way Galaxy giving it a huge leg up against the Ancient Human Empire it would eventually discover and the Forerunner Empire That was created from the Precursor Race that the Protogravemind just absorbed victim a victim from.
Have you ever asked yourself, how did the Primordial arrive in the Milky Way?
How about a more dangerous question, where did the Primordial consume his biomass to become the gravemind he was when he was first discovered by natives of the Milky Way after arriving from whatever other Galaxy his Flood minions haul from?
Are the species that became his biomass, species that he consumed from Andromeda prior to arriving in the Milky Way
And don’t forget the Flood’s nickname:
      “The Anthesis of life”
      Just think about that.
According to this video, the flood are not only powerful enough to scare Forerunners into firing rings, but they are also intelligent enough to understand, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend” and use it shamelessly.
Essentially the flood are capable of learning via the victims they consume.
Also, one thing I want to say is I think I can reverse derive what the Primordial told and didn’t tell The Ancient San Shayum Human Empire. They asked The Primordial about how to defeat the flood. Aka a flood centered question. That’s a very important detail. This is just my theory but we know that the Flood came from outside the galaxy. Most likely via Parsimony, they arrived from our Galactic Neighbor Andromeda. Fact is that Flood or flood spores arrived in Our Milky Way and the flood began doing what the flood does aka consuming any life it found. But what I believe the Primordial didn’t tell the humans is that at some point during the initial Flood’s rampage, a member of the Precursor race was infected and naturally as people know, the flood consciousness absorbed the consciousness and critically vital extensive knowledge of this absorbed precursor into itself and the flood decided that the infected precursor was chosen as the biomass base of the very first MILKY WAY NATIVE GRAVEMIND, NOT the first Gravemind ever, ONLY the first Milky Way NATIVE Gravemind. That is key information. Thus this Native Gravemind acquires the name of the Primordial and with the Flood being the perfect decoy, The Primordial took to the sidelines to focus on acquiring even more knowledge and as strategic survival for the survival of its Milky Way Flood campaign.
With the Precursors eradicated and the enemy of the Precursors the Forerunners living peacefully for a time, The flood were stopped as we know.
The absorbed Precursor within the Gravemind we call the Primordial wanted revenge for the destruction of the Precursor Race it once belonged to and the Primordial itself as a whole wanted revenge against the Forerunners for defeating the flood at one time. (This is why we learn eventually that the Primordial and the Precursor within itself both had beef with the Forerunners).
THEREFORE: (Fact: When Flood arrived again in the ancient Forerunner era for a second time, Things got desperate as we know)
but this time the Flood was ready to win for sure that time because it had access to its Native Gravemind’s knowledge from all the previous attempts so during this second campaign of the Flood, they had the upper hand.
Getting back to the original question: When the humans ask The Primordial how to defeat the Flood, it makes sense that the Primordial didn’t disclose much information about its own identity as the actual center or HQ of the initial Flood threat at that time. Instead, the intelligent Primordial chose to eliminate two birds with one stone by telling the truth about the Flood (without mentioning itself) and giving just enough “help” aka the lie that was the self consuming “cure” (That later the Forerunners would try to recreate in their desperation but fail BECAUSE it was a lie) so the humans could use it against the flood.
Of course the humans lost as was the plan of the Primordial. And of course the Forerunners were wasting time trying to recreate it thus buying the Primordial’s second campaign of Flood time to get ahead on the war against the Forerunners which it did as a fact.
Sadly the Primordial was sentenced to age death by the Didact (I’m not sure which one) for its crimes after the Primordial disclosed enough truth (during its sentencing and court hearing while in detainment) that it wanted revenge against the Forerunners for turning against The Creators of the Forerunners aka The Precursor Race itself (and also revenge against defeating the Flood’s first attempt at consuming the whole Milky Way Galaxy).
Age death being a machine capable of fast forwarding time so that a victim aged right before your eyes as punishment for crimes committed. Even the Primordial’s bones turned to dust if I remember correctly.
But the fact remains people, that our nearest galactic neighbor is Andromeda and that The Primordial confirmed the flood arrived from outside our Galaxy AND that the Forerunners who survived the Rings fled the Milky Way as self imposed exile/punishment for using the rings in the first place.
Here’s a viable true possibility question:
Did the Forerunners go to Andromeda?
Or an even better speculative question:
Is Andromeda the Flood brimming first galaxy that the Flood originated from?
Here’s the penultimate question: more likely, is Andromeda just another entire galaxy that fell to the Flood like perhaps countless other galaxies being that The Milky Way might be the very first galaxy that the Flood have actually failed to consume?
Or the ultimate question: ... never mind. I’ll save that for later.
Final thoughts: Focusing obsessively on the nature of Logic Plague which is very similar to what Satan did to Eve in the Garden of Eden, If there was a ranking of factions that genuinely understand the two phrases, “The Pen is mightier than the sword” and “knowledge is power” which are essential for Logic Plague to be effective, it would look like this:
      1. The Flood (Primordial included)
      2. The Precursors
      3. The Ancient Human San Shayum Empire
      4. The Forerunners
      5. The UNSC
      6. The Covenant (Delusional AF)
      7. The Banished (Only care of themselves)
      8. The Human Rebel Front (ignorance is bliss)

There's a theory that when chief first encountered the flood they lead him straight into a trap. They are seen watching from a distance in the beginning of the mission but run away to avoid being spotted, the door locks behind him and the same happened to the marine he finds dead leaning against the door meaning they locked the door on all the marines and Keyes as well. Then when chief returns to the elevator he entered on its destroyed as if something sabotaged it and they were waiting at the bottom of the elevator that goes deeper into the facility. Then when he finds the only other exit to the containment area a horde of flood were waiting on the other side of the door to stop him from escaping. The whole mission 343 Guilty Spark is a death trap set up by the flood that works in capturing Keyes and almost Master Chief

@@applegamer20 I'm under the impression from the game that either a) the Covenant realized its mistake fast, locked the area down, and ran away, or b) the Covenant stupidly set the trap for Captain Keyes, which is why the only Covenant they found were dead, or c) Guilty Spark is a trigger happy idiot that wants to fire the rings and do experiments with the Flood. I can see the Flood setting a trap for the Master Chief--or any prey for that matter, but then again, it could have been Guilty Spark doing containment protocols. Nice observations.

Don't you just love Halo lore? On the surface, it's about hope and Humanity fighting to survive, but when you dig deeper, it's soooo dark. The Flood are easily the best thing to ever happen to Halo (and gaming in general). They brought a whole new element to the classic zombie stories and made it so much more terrifying. If you think about it, they're pretty much the reason for Halo as we know it. Without them, the Forerunners never would've been wiped out or create the Halo array in the first place. Ancient Humanity wouldn't have invaded Forerunner-controlled space, and both species could've strived to maybe Precursor level intelligence if they worked together and deciphered Precursor tech. Amazing how one species can change the faith of a galaxy, ruled by 2 of the most powerful empires in common sci-fi stories.

well the fact that the flood pretty much started after some humans started to feed precursor dust to their pet dogs, which then started to become the first flood. so you can actually blame the whole series on the forerunners being petty. cause the precursors wanted humanity to take up the mantle and the early forerunners didn't like that and decided to kill them all. caucusing the precursors to become dust to hide.

That said, very fascinating video nonetheless, and I definitely agree on the Flood's true horror being their intelligence.
Though I'd say a secondary horror of theirs would be their willingness to immediately turn on us. They knew the primary failsafe for the Rings was now in their hands, and that no human would willingly travel to the Rings to activate them. Their ultimate goal was always to prevent them being fired, and I wouldn't be surprised if they slaughtered Johnson and Miranda without mercy if the Flood got to the controls before Johnson activated them.

Comparing the Flood to the Zerg (My personal favorite hive-mind species), I think you definitely have a point. The Zerg didn't reach their full potential until they came under the dominion of a new, more intelligent ruler. The Zerg Overmind relied on brute force and overwhelming numbers to conquer worlds, but it was predictable and easily manipulated or outmaneuvered. It never gave a single thought to diplomacy, and pursued its goals with single-minded determination, always taking the most direct approach, and that proved to be its downfall. But the Queen of Blades was much smarter; she could negotiate and form alliances, she could use deception to further her goals, and her unpredictable stratagems allowed her to succeed where the Overmind failed, humiliating all of the major powers of the galaxy at one point, and ultimately ensuring the survival of her species in the face of an even greater threat.

Chris Legaspi Guess what?

"Why the Flood becoming our ally in Halo 3 exposes their true horror" When I saw that title, I was thinking exactly what the answer would be; The Flood is capable of clever tactics and will manipulate whoever in order to advance their own conquest for superiority... Except they don't think of themselves as evil, but rather as necessary. They think of themselves as a means of evolution, of unity. And considering how ONI will do anything in its power to keep aliens as weak as our relation to them, they kind of have a point. If we're willing to hurt aliens that have made a noted effort to stop attacking us, than who are we to judge them for trying to stop us from fighting? Granted, they are eldritch abominations capable of torment beyond comprehension, but the horrible things they say just might be true, which is the real tragedy...

I figured you'd go at this from a different direction. To me, the real horror laid bare by that scene is more of a philosophical implication, also summed up by the great CE line "Halo doesn't kill the Flood, it kills their *food* ". All throughout the trilogy, the thing you're primarily fighting for is literally Humanity's survival by preventing the activation of Halos. And here as in Halo 2, the Flood are all too happy to assist, and why wouldn't they be? Until the Flood achieve total victory, you could sort of see them as being in a parasitic relationship with life, for the Flood to survive life must continue, and as long as life continues the flood can survive. I wouldn't expect this sort of examination from an action game (which on all levels operate on a philosophy of "kill the people trying to kill you until they succeed"), but in that moment of the Flood helping you to stop the Array from firing, you can truly understand why the Forerunners felt they had to fire it in the first place. I'd argue death by Halo Array is preferable to death by Flood.

    • @mileator
      @mileator 6 років тому +16

So the Horror comes from the understanding that the gravemind didn't ally with you because of a mutal fear of death, but because of a self centered fear of starving.

Besides, if the rings go off, they’re annihilation is certain. If they fight the flood, there’s a chance they’ll win.

Chief and Arbiter can't afford to waste time fighting the Flood or think it over, they have to get to the control room immediately at all costs, and I'm sure at that moment they were probably a bit astonished the Flood can choose not to attack them.

The cut scene with the Gravemind literally explains this. He needs the Arbiter and Chiefs help. “You will look in one area, and you will look in another”. It’s only when the flood tanks show up that really sets the last stone in place for it. The Gravemind was using them to stop his own destruction. Once he used them, it was back to being enemies so he can grow stronger.

Considering how truly intelligent The Flood is by the events of Halo 3, this reminds me of Lucifer in The Prophecy (1995) played by Viggo Mortensen. He forms an alliance with humans just to stop Gabriel’s plan of creating a second Hell. Mind you, Lucifer didn’t become “good” because of a change of heart. Rather he didn’t want the extra competition. That’s the same exact idea the Gravemind is achieving with Arbiter and Chief. The enemy of his enemy is his friend even if only for the moment.

Their introduction in Halo does a really great job of demonstrating just how intelligent the Flood actually are.
When you first encounter them they're just mindless blobs that throw themselves at you in an attempt to infect you. Then a room later they're possessing humanoid hosts and learning to mob you and use their limbs. Then just a couple of rooms later they've started learning how to operate human firearms and engage in firefights with Chief. Towards the end of the level they wait for you to enter a ravine then immediately ambush you from either side up above whilst firing down on you.
They speedrun the entire history of human military intelligence in a single level.

I would absolutely love it if i saw a primordial standing atop a huge mountain in halo infinite. The sheer magnitude of that encounter would send shivers down my spine, yet leave me curious as to what it plans to do.
As i approach the forerunner structure, i watch as the blue light is shot into the sky. I follow it's path only for the primordial to be found, yet it dissappears as soon as I make eye contact. Master Chief walks into the forerunner structure, confused but alert as the door behind him closes. He looks around.....the lights turn on....and he sees pods of covenant, humans, and the minds of AI stored in different containers. He approchaes one pod....the jar says "Cortana". Medicant Bias finds itself behind the Chief, and for the first time the Chief is unaware of this presence. The AI begins talking. "Reclaimer, your presence is oddly amusing" The Chief turns around "How you were created, fortifies the importance of evolutionary prowess" The Chief is backing up but hits the container that he was previously looking at. "Yet despite your inevitable conflict within the other....creations....you are left lost within the confounds of your own mind......your companion....fellow AI" Chief quickly looks at Cortanas pod. "Your species...and all those that roam....are great culminations of knowledge." A primordial steps in from behind medicant bias revealing it holding the AI in its hand "And our exchange will be....most satisfying to see what lies behind the mind of the reclaimer. Your flesh, place it in my palm" Chief points his gun but is outnumbered by an infinite amount of flood and corrupted sentinals. He looks for a path out but sees no such opportunity. Suddenly a plasma rifle is fired and multiple grenades are thrown, the primordial is no longer there as it dissappears. The flood speciman standing in front of the Chief is impaled by an energy sword as the body falls revealing The Arbiter. They look at each other as the Arbiter says "We must go, the flood have our scent"
