I hitchhiked in Italy in the 60's, getting by with French and Spanish. In the '70s I got a Linguaphone Italian course. I avoided the exercises but listened over and over again, occasionally reviewing the grammar explanations. That was it until I discovered the power of audio books.

Before I discovered the whole polyglot comunity I inmersed myself in Italian while working... I would listen to "Podcast italiano" for hours and after that I realized I could learn a language way better through comprenhensible input.
Italian here ..... i remember my primary school teacher in the first years had us read books published by "il battello a vapore" .... they were good to help primary school children, get them used to reading, learn new words and more. Yes i realize they are children books but I think it might be good for a learner.

I've been studying italian for almost five years now and even started learning spanish from last year. It was a bit confusing at first since there are so many "falsi amici" but as time goes by, it has been a great help as they are so similar and they're all latin based as you mentioned :)

Knowing Spanish at your level (even mine), the transition sure has to be smoother. Maybe more with the spoken vs written/reading.
Man knew Spanish and French before attempting to learn Italian, it's a huge help with Italian if you know those two languages.
@@canchero724 beat me to it. Its true. I have s friend whimsoeaks spanish. My friend understands Italian but just because i know both Spanish and french I understand a little more than her.
Usually when someone talks about Italian they connect with spanish and although this is true it definitely has similarities with French if not more then spanish.
@@g718ny Yes and no, Italian grammar is basically almost the same as French grammar (with the biggest differences being how to form the plural of nouns and adjectives and verb conjugations), French vocabulary is also technically closer, but in reality the huge difference in pronunciation makes Spanish significantly easier to understand for an Italian, to the point where I, as an Italian kid who knew no Spanish, could easily have extended conversations with Spanish speakers who knew no Italian with both of us understanding each other nearly perfectly, a thing that is definitely unrealistic to even think about doing with a French speaker
If you see the channel LANGFOCUS, I wrote there a long list of words in italian, more similar to English then Spanish. For exemple blonde, in italian is biondo while in spanish is Rubio.
@@canchero724 you guys are lucky to know multiple languages I'd be happy as ever even knowing a second language. I bet it does come in handy on some level there are a lot of similarities between Spanish and Italian. Very arrhythmic languages I enjoy hearing and listening to both of them the wordry is outstanding. I don't know why I think they're so cool but I bet it's even cooler being able to speak it. 😎

Nice to see Linguaphone get a mention from the Kaufmeister. I've really fond memories of studying Italian with those old tape cassettes (young ones please Google) and then using the language in Italy as a young man. "Mi place sciare e nuotare. Non vedo l'ora di godere un po di fresco." ☺️
Even though it's a little out of date now, the Ragusa "Essential Italian Grammar" is still an outstanding resource. She manages to condense the 10% of grammar that gives you 90% of what you need into a very digestable and practical format. Highly recommended.

STEVE, as an older person like you, I wonder if you could address this: I see and hear folks determined to be a "polyglot" and it seems to come from a desire to say I'm polyglot. Rather than as you and most of the other leading public polyglots say, "I fell in love with a culture or a language" and over time just kept going. It's subtle but I feel like some folks are doing it from an ego place to feel special, not from really enjoying the culture, and connection with people but just as a numbers game. I recently read someone who sounded very bitter, claimed they spent years learnging languages and then got dissapointed at not feeling "connected or seeing the value." I guess I'm wonder if you could give a clear perspective on why- or the positive reasons to learn languages.
How how to avoid a kind of mechanistic trap of just adding languages as a numbers game??? Honestly I love one language and that is the one I want to dive deep into, to understand the culture and literature in depth.
I feel no obligation to learn any language, nor to improve on ones that I have learned and now don't speak so well. Exploring languages is my hobby. When I no longer feel interested in learning new language, or in improving ones I have learned, I will stop doing so. But then I will still have all the languages I have learned to enjoy, and all those cultures to explore in greater depth. No regrets.
Use the language creatively, applying the knowledge
To learn a new linguistic harmony, to learn the new culture, to be a part of that culture, if acceptance is granted
If you are a traveler it comes in handy, people are much nicer to you if you can speak their language, and if you are young looking for a job it can help. learning a language like Italian and not going to Italy or not having a lot of Italian people to talk to is a waste.

Thanks for addressing the issue of false friends! It definitely put me at ease as someone who studied two romance languages and wants to learn another but is hesitating partly because of that issue (and partly the fear of interference)

Not caring too much about false friends is a great approach. There is one caveat: If you have to introduce a speaker at a university meeting, you should be aware that 'introducir' may mainly be used for "to put things in bodily orifices" in the local Spanish variant. A friend of mine found that out the hard way.
Hahaha in my region of brazil, its the same. "Introduzir" lost the normal meanign and the people only remember the sexual meanign of that word

È un romanzo che in genere viene letto in Italia nelle scuole superiori, e mi ricordo parecchi dei miei compagni di classe che facevano fatica a capirlo! Può essere una lettura piuttosto complessa anche per un madrelingua!
Concordo e aggiungerei che anche Pinoccchio non è una lettura adatta secondo me per imparare l'italiano moderno, utilizzando Collodi un linguaggio ormai datato

You definitely have Italian relatives, don’t you? Both your name and surname are Italian, and "Padovani" refers to Padua (Padova), Veneto, a few hours drive from where I live

I just decided to learn Italian this year! Is my goal ! I bought some texts to get me started… my main language is Spanish and I think that might give me a little advantage to learn Italian since they have many similarities… I’ll use all that I can to my aid but it is always intimidating anyways to start a new language.
I haven’t self taught myself any language since I learned English … like 18 years ago. Wish me luck 🤞.
Good luck but most importantly, you are lucky! You WILL have an advantage for sure .... it didn't take me long to learn basics in spanish, and just after few months i was ready to conjugate the subjuntivo and speak at a fairly good level (though I still make many mistakes). Keep at it and you will learn fast!

Io ho studiato italiano ai corsi per corrispondenza, poi- in Italia, adesso- attraverso un corso online. Ho fatto un corso della filologia di lingue romanze in Europa. Parlo, scrivo poesie, leggo e ascolto. Non sono italiano, pero' so l'italiano molto bene ( un corso avanzato), e non importa, che pensano gli altri. Parliamoci italiano insieme?
Buongiorno, volevo sapere se la lingua italiana è studiata all'estero oppure non molto. Perché so che moltissimi stranieri e turisti tentano di studiarla. In Italia, abbiamo tantissimi extracomunitari provenienti da diverse nazionalità che arrivano in Italia specialmente nel nord North Italia per cercare un lavoro, per una vita migliore. Vedono l'Italia come una terra promessa. Ogni anno in Italia accogliamo rifugiati e richiedenti asilo, ovviamente loro sono quasi obbligati a imparare la nostra lingua, mentre invece gli altri stranieri come per esempio i turisti non credo. La sua opinione ? Comunque, complimenti davvero per lo studio delle lingue romanze, la stimo moltissimo. Grazie thank you very match !

Steve and viewers, any advice for a Brazilian (Portuguese speaker) on learning Spanish by myself? Usual language learning stuff seems too easy given the similarities between the languages and I can basically understand 90% of the spoken language, but I struggle to speak and know most of the basic stuff to be able to write and speak.
I think it's very hard to abandon the comfort of your Brazilian Portuguese since you know that Spanish speakers will understand you and you understand them. You just have to go for it try to speak more Spanish gradually and don't worry about the degree of Portuguese interference in your Spanish. Just keep going. Try to visualize yourself as a native speaker of Spanish and just go for it.

Depends on the language, similarity of vocabulary to languages I know, writing system etc.. No hard and fast rule.
Caro Steve, io sono un italiano che ha imparato l'inglese americano sul posto, durante uno stage come post-doc in Oklahoma ( no jokes on cows, please) , con un po' di fatica a distinguere tra il vero inglese e l'okie, parlato da studenti locali. Se hai letto I promessi sposi (io li ho letti in 5a elementare, prima di studiarli a scuola) e pinocchio hai ben conosciuto l'italiano molto toscaneggiante (Manzoni era milanese, ma dopo una prima versione, riscrisse il romanzo dopo una permanenza a Firenze, per "sciacquare i panni in Arno", come scrisse). Riesci a capire un po' le differenze regionali in Italia? Per esempio, il proverbio: "ogni scarrafone è bello a mamma soia" da dove viene? E questo detto, usato dalle mamme per minacciare i figli: "Stasera te mando a dormir descolzo e colla testa fra le recie" da che zona proviene? Spero che tu abbia ben capito tutte le parole (a parte le ultime che sono volutamente un test sui dialetti italiani) e tanti auguri peri tuoi progressi in italiano.

You haven't actually learned Italian in the sense of being able to communicate in it. What is the point of studying so many languages if you never master any? Isn't it better to choose one that you love and concentrate on it? I studied Italian in college in NY in the mid 1990's for 2 1/2 years, then in Florence for a couple of weeks in the summer and maybe a week or two in December, in 1998-2000. In 2000, I took a 2 week course in Venice and short courses in Rome and Naples. I have made about 18 trips to Italy since 1998, mostly to Rome and Venice and always use my Italian while there.
To become fluent in Italian you would need at least a year of study in Italy. The same applies to any language. Doing language exchange helps, if you can find people to do it with. That is possible in NY. It's also possible to continue to study here, if I want to.
I think you are stuck on an intermediate or advanced beginner level, if that, and I don't think you can get much beyond that without having the opportunity to engage with Italian speakers. Otherwise, you are just learning a literary Italian, not the way people actually use the language. The way to learn a language is through immersion in it. Classes where little English is used are the best way to learn.
this might hit hard to many students and learners, but it's inevitably true whenever trying to learn a different language to its core
It honestly depends on what the individual wants out of language learning. Some people like indulging in lots of languages while it interests them and then they move on and there's nothing wrong with that
@@fruitfulfaerie8627 What is the "It" that you are referring to? Your comment has nothing to do with mine. Mine was a response to his claim that he learned Italian. That's the title of the video. I say that if you can't converse in a language with a native speaker, you haven't really learned it. I studied French for 5 years, but rarely try to use it. I can read with a dictionary and speak a little but I can't converse well with a native speaker. Should I tell you about how I "learned" French?

Does input really work to learn a language? I am dyslexic and really struggling to learn.
I'm Brazilian , I speak portuguese and english and I'm on my way to learn italian , and I can assume , portuguese is closer to Italian than spanish.
Do you know Finnish? Judging by your Italian I think you would master the pronunciation fast. If you don't know any Finno-Ugric languages, you could really try to challenge yourself with Finnish :) There's extensive grammatical case system but also the language lacks many things that you need to learn when you are learning other languages :)

L'italiano può risultare difficile da imparare per via dei tanti dialetti che la gente usa. Guardare la tv italiana o i telefilm in italiano quindi possono avere un limite. Gli audiolibri sono ottimi sicuramente se si vuole usare una buona dizione.

The best way to learn is to take an immersion class in it, where Japanese is used almost exclusively. For self-study, you need language exchange partners and a beginner's grammar book.
Although I love reading the classics, I don’t think that they are necessarily useful for someone who wants to learn how to speak modern Italian and use it when one is in Italy. remember that languages living that the words phrases and even the grammar might differ drastically from that which was used 100 or 200 years ago. imagine reading Victorian literature and trying to use the language from those books and novels with people in 2024.

Se Le è piaciuto I promessi sposi dovrebbe vedere le 8 puntate dello sceneggiato del 1967. Stranamente Lei non menziona un metodo di apprendimento comune a molti che vogliono apprendere l'inglese, ovvero attraverso i testi delle canzon: è la maniera più facile per acquisire un vocabolario di base e una pima infarinatura della lingua parlata.

Steve didn´t learn Italian. Steve studied Italian. When will the YT "Polyglots" stop making ridiculous claims. However, what I like about Steve is his enthusiasm for languages, culture and history. It is truly infectious, and an inspiration to many language learners. "speak" 20 languages? of course not. maybe 3 at best. but I don´t think that´s the appeal of Steve´s channel. He loves language and culture, and that in itself should, and will inspire thousands. But these YT guys discredit themselves with silly claims (and yes, I have heard Steve´s Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian and others). I don´t know anything of Arabic and Persian at all, but following the general trend, I would doubt the level of those languages also. Which is the inherit problem of saying you "speak" a language. I won´t say anything about the product he is selling (I would like to meet the first person who got to fluency with it), or I will be banned. But he seems like a genuine nice guy, and with a great enthusiasm, which is a great quality.
I'm a little disappointed to see all these linguistics still using ancient techniques. Dusty old books and hours of reading. That is assuming we can even read the characters.
So add another year on that one. It's 2022, and we still don't use digital media, gamification, or active social learning. The language apps are garbage. They teach 'tracing letters' and grammar rules. The world is more online than ever before, and we're still using slow out-of-date techniques for language acquisition.
