  • Germany is full of picturesque towns, but Heidelberg is perhaps the most beautiful of them all! The forest hills and famous castle are just a few of the highlights of Heidelberg.

    Thanks for your video.
That iconic view at the beginning and the end of your video? You *did* get up to the Philosophenweg after all. Like many, I'm glad you got both iconic views, one on each side of the Neckar river.
    * Schloss Heidelberg: there are a few patches of land surrounding the castle where a few cows still graze. The hill which is flanked by the castle is called Königstuhl (King's Chair). I should know: I lived in town for a couple of years, and my work-place, a research institute, was located near the top of that very hill.
    * Bergbahn funicular: next time take the entire funicular trip (2 parts) to the summit of Königstuhl, for an even higher viewpoint of the Neckar river valley all the way west to the Rhein where you'll just make out Mannheim, and the nuclear power plant in Phillippsburg. Before the funicular got its shiny new vehicles and overhaul for consistent EU safety and operational standards, when I lived in town, the funicular still had perfectly functional all-wood vehicles which were freezing in winter, would sometimes jolt from side to side, and made this awesome squeaky creaking noise, as they went up and down the hill.
    * HD: At least one-third of the city's 150-plus-thousand residents consists of university students and people working at a *lot* of research institutions out and about town: that gives the town a very international flair. It's fair to ask whether Americans flock to this town, based on how an American military base had established itself in town for decades, and people naturally came over to visit. And they told their friends, and so on. Sure, HD could be done in 1 day (2 at the most), and its compact nature definitely helps. But as well as multiple forest hikes in the nearby Odenwald, there are interesting day-trips to make from HD: Speyer, Schwetzingen, Neckargemünd, Lorsch, Worms, the etc.

Nice video. I was in two minds whether to visit the castle inside or not ? Thanks to you, we will visit it for sure. And you could have climbed few more steps and visited Philosophenweg (Philosopher's walk), it's really great up there !! . May be better to leave something for next time 🙂🙂

The inside of the castle was okay, but the balcony overlooking the entire city was amazing! We missed out on Philosophenweg, but we’ll definitely be back! Heidelberg is so beautiful, we definitely want to stop by whenever we are in the area!

@@MaxandSidney we started in Heidelberg, went to Rothenburg o.d. T, then to Garmisch-P for a few days to visit Oberammergau, Mittenwald, etc…and now we’re in the little-known town of Sigmaringen, and I gotta say it’s amazing here! , I recommend everyone go to Heidelberg AND Sigmaringen!
