I'm very happy for your "take" on Heidelberg. It's been a long time since my last visit in 1964, and I hope to return next year for a 60th anniversary experience. While in the US Army, I was stationed in nearby Mannheim for 19 months, and spent almost every weekend in Heidelberg. There are some nice Neckar River cruises that are very scenic and lotsa fun. Sadly,my favorite local beer is no longer being brewed as the brewery is no longer in business. Getting to Heidelberg from Mannheim was cheap and easy using the OEG which stopped at Kaefertal Wald and went to Heidelberg passing through Weinheim, where there is a neat Castle Ruin!

Don't forget Schloss Schwetzigen nearby! It's the Asparagus capital of Germany in the surrounding region, and the tasty white asparagus is abundant there, in season. Several of the Mozart Operas were first performed there, if my memory serves me correctly?@@NearFromHome

You both never fail to make us all so jealous of the great places you visit...this is no exception! Love the suggestion to first visit the tourist info centers--you always seem to get great places to visit! Great books--those should help you with your German (not that it seems to need much help. You both are speaking it quite well). The castle looks extraordinary. And, as always, super jealous of the beers. Looking forward to the next episode with all the food and more beer! Prost! Rob

As I wrote here about a year ago when I commented that I hoped to return “next year,” this is being written from Heidelberg. My first effort to walk in your footsteps failed due to thundershowers which prevented me from seeing the castle ruins in Neckargemünd. But yesterday the weather was perfect for a nice visit to the castle! Enjoyed it thoroughly, but didn’t take the interior tour, as I had already done so several times some 60 years earlier! Sadly, Heidelberger Engelbraeu has vanished from the local scene. The S-Bahn has replaced the OEG for transportation to Mannheim. Had an excellent visit to this historic town. You mentioned that Heidelberg is a city of science; I didn’t check it out this visit, but Bunsen’s laboratory at the University used to be open for the public to see. (Bunsen burner, his invention was in almost every laboratory up through the 1970’s).

I follow you guys since months and I am totally happy and thankful that you finally made it to break out/leave your little "bavarian bubble" of germany and the beautiful surrounding areas towards the south and have started to move further north! Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland Palatinate for example might not have the amazing views of the Alps as a beautiful background of your videos, but they surely have hundreds of castles, great landscapes, amazing forrests, medieval cities and really great wine and deliciuos +
food waiting for you and other expats/travellers since decades! Please try to be brave an leave yout bavarian/munich bubble and travel just a few hundred clicks further to the north and you´ll find the things you already like in a greater variety!

Its a ~1 hour train ride from Frankfurt to Heidelberg. There is a faster train and a super slow train (regionalbahn) that goes every hour and stops in every city in between.
If you want to visit a „small heidelberg“ nearby go to weinheim and visit the market place

I lived there from 89-95… loved it. Disappointed with the “diversity” comments… has really caused trouble in Germany. I fear the Heidelberg I left in 1995 is not very similar today. That being said… great video for a great city.

    • @NearFromHome
      @NearFromHome  10 місяців тому +19

Are you German? Having been there for only 6 years yourself you sound like a diverse immigrant to Heidelberg to me. I mean, come on, if you genuinely are against highly skilled immigrant academics, researchers, and scientists becoming a part of Germany….then I wouldn’t know what to say to you. The city you left in 1995 is indeed gone, it left almost 30 years ago, the moment the second passed, because no place can be nor should be static. The Heidelberg you enjoyed was not the city it was 30 years before you arrived, and no doubt there were some fools who lamented your being there, as you lament the being there of others. But it isn’t ours to judge. Though frankly no doubt it was just as diverse back then, that issue just wasn’t as politicised as it is today.

Hi Guys! Great video. You definitely put Heidelberg on our bucket list. I wrote a poem for you to!
In Munich's embrace, Ben and Camille reside,
Bavarian dreams where love and laughter coincide.
Neuschwanstein whispers tales of their delight,
As the Danube serenades them through the night.
Biergartens echo with their shared delight,
Lederhosen twirls in the Munich moonlight.
Camille's laughter, a melody in the air,
As Ben's gaze, a love only Munich could bear.
Engulfed in the Alps, their love does soar,
In the heart of Bavaria, forevermore.
From Marienplatz to Englischer Garten's bloom,
Ben and Camille dance in Munich's room.
Seasons change, but their love stands true,
In the cobbled streets, where memories accrue.
Munich's magic weaves through each embrace,
As Ben and Camille find their special place
