      survivalmike Great idea! I've used paracord to silence dog tags and some other chains, and even noticed they tended to stay untangled... but never made the connection to headphones.

    I have found that the smallest amount of hot glue inside your heat shrink will keep the shrink from slipping or moving later. And when u heat it the glue will melt into place to fill any inconsistent areas or gaps.

    Uuuughhh I'm so sick of soldering those little earphone wires (with the little unburnable fibres) in order to get a working spare set out of all my broken sets.
    But if you are gonna go to those lengths, may I suggest that before you cover over the connections to the speakers & jack, that you put a little expanding glue up into the rubber sleeves where the wires go in. They don't put any protection or a knot in the wire in there, it just goes straight up to a solder joint on the speakers. And why would they - a good yank means more money in their pockets?
    Just shove some glue with a pin GENTLY up under the sleeve where it will harmlessly expand & fill the cavity, then excess will begin to ooze out. Just wipe off any excess before it dries or if it's begun, pinch it into shape with wet fingers. It'll eventually stop expanding & when it's dry (24 hrs), your ears will last significantly longer, but still, show them some respect - they're not unbreakable.
    This is best done while they're brand new & body oils haven't had a chance to spread over the wires yet. if they have been worn, clean them over thoroughly with methylated spirits & wipe dry with a clean cloth before gluing as any oils will stop the glue doing its job. This trick will usually double the life of your ears if you've done it right.

    Great project!! I'd suggest using heat shrink that has adhesive on the inside. I just love that stuff for jobs like this. Also, may want to invest in a small heat gun. There are hobby ones that are pretty small and cheap and work great on heat shrink -no need for the one from the hardware store! Still, I love this idea and am going to try this myself soon!!

    Warning: this comment may be too long for your patience.
    As an experienced (not necessarily professional) headphone fixer guy, this are my tips for reconnecting/fixing/DIYing headphone wires:
    1.) When you're doing a DIY on your headphones e.g. Frankenstein-ing your previous broken headphones to one (which in this case disregard this tip), or just fixing your headphones, MAKE SURE THAT EARPHONE ISN'T WORKING BUT STILL FIXABLE, OTHERWISE YOU'LL END UP FIXING AND/OR POSSIBLY SCREWING UP A COMPLETELY WORKING HEADPHONE.
    2.) When cutting the wires to the desired/needed length, MAKE SURE YOU GIVE A LITTLE ALLOWANCE, I.E. TO CUT IT JUST A TINY BIT LONGER THAN THE NEEDED LENGTH. More about it later, you'll see why.
    3.) When you connect the wires, make sure you burn the enamel coating first as this guy did, BUT FIRST MAKE SURE TO WIPE OUT/REMOVE THE OXIDIZATION OR THE ASH FROM THE BURNT ENAMEL FIRST TO ENSURE BETTER CONNECTION BETWEEN THE WIRES. I personally use a tissue with a little bit of alcohol to wipe out the burnt enamel. (Alcohol because it evaporates in itself so you don't have to worry about water screwing up the connection)
    4.) When you're starting to connect the wires, first make sure that your heatshrink is already inserted in the cord that you're working on (goddamnit I too always forget to put heatshrink first so I always screw the cord up a little bit), and make sure you use the right diameter of heatshrink otherwise the covering will be loose or too tight to fit into the cord.
    And, IF YOU'RE UNSURE OF HOW TO CONNECT THE WIRES TO THEIR CORRECT CHANNELS/POLARITY, SPLICE THE GROUND WIRE FIRST (THE WIRE WITH NO COLOR) TOGETHER, PLUG THE JACK IN, PLAY A SONG ON YOUR PHONE (BETTER YET INSTALL A HEADPHONE SOUND TESTER APP) AND THEN TRY TO CONNECT OTHER WIRES TO TEST THE SOUND.
    If you have installed a LEFT-RIGHT HEADPHONE TESTER APP on your phone, it's easier to test if the sound output will be transmitted to their right channels.
    And, there is another way to know how to connect wires: COLOR CODING. Check the wire's color before you burn the colored enamel to make sure that you know where to connect.
    Usually, the BLUE and GREEN are for the signal/output wires, the RED is for the MICROPHONE SIGNAL and the COPPER COLOR is of course the GROUND WIRE.
    5.) When you finally splice the wires to their right channels, MAKE SURE TO TWIST THEM PROPERLY. under-twist it and your connection wouldn't be good. OVERTWISTING IT WILL CAUSE THE WIRE TO STRAIN AND BREAK. Just twist it just right until it reaches the end of the splicing wire.
    When you reached the end of these wires, CUT THE FRAYING ENDS OF THE WIRE. THIS IS WHY YOU HAVE TO GIVE WIRES A LITTLE BIT OF ALLOWANCE. I just found out recently (yes I fixed another loose headphones and I'm proud to say it worked) that FRAYED WIRES AND LONGER SPLICED WIRES MAKES THE CONNECTION POORER. I don't know how, I don't know why but that's how it works.
    6.) If you finally connected the two wires, TEST IT FIRST (check out tip #4). you don't want to cover and insulate everything then finding out later that it still looses or doesn't work. If it works, then try to tap the wires gently. If the sound is smooth and don't hear any white noise or the sound doesn't disconnect even if you tap or pinch it, that means the connection is good and ready to solder. But if the sound disconnects or you hear a white noise or crackling, that means you haven't twisted the wire properly or you didn't remove the fraying parts properly.
    That's it, thanks for reading and following the tips ;)
    Edit:
    In addition to tip #3, IF YOU'RE STARTING TO REMOVE THE ENAMEL OUT, MAKE SURE THAT YOU ONLY BURN THE ENAMEL, AND NOT MELT THE WIRES. To do this, just apply fire to the wire using lighter and if the enamel starts to burn SHUT THE FRICKING LIGHTER OFF, PUT IT AWAY AND LET THE FRICKING FIRE FROM THE ENAMEL CRAWL AND BURN ITSELF.
    You don't need to keep applying fire to the wire otherwise you'll just melt the whole wire altogether. Again, LET THE ENAMEL BURN ITSELF AND BLOW THE FIRE IF IT REACHES YOUR DESIRED POINT OF SPLICING.

I mean also with some good quality earbuds (cheap good quality ones like the KZ ATE / KZ ED9 or Xaoimi Piston2 etc) some nice, maybe black and blood red cablesand some quality wrap not just trat shrinking plastic stuff .. but that said there would be I guess a big loss of quality if you fuck up the cables from hifi headsets

    Another idea as it's usually correctly done: put the shrinking tube in before soldering the pieces.

  • @TheBypasser
    @TheBypasser 6 років тому

    Why do you burn those poor wires with that lighter? The copper oxidizes and your solder joints become crap. A good flux - and keeping your soldering iron hot enough - will burn away the coating without any damage to the wires themselves (which will also be tinned for free in the process).

  • @Toaster808
    @Toaster808 8 років тому

    next time make sure you clean your wires before trying to solder them. that's why your solder didn't flow at all, giving you junky connections.

  • @Prence
    @Prence 8 років тому

    Instead of cutting the wires and patching them back together, wouldn't it be easier to open the earbuds and unsolder and resolder them after words. I mean it wouldn't be any harder to remove the earbud part and reconnect them than to cut and patch the cable. Much cleaner look I would think. I replaced the earbud part on my ipod earbuds in like 15 minutes when they stopped working after 3 years.

  • @MatuIlMito
