    What a fin-tastic video essay!
The story of The Little Mermaid is one of my favorites. And as a child, I loved seeing mermaid statues! In San Francisco, there’s a mermaid statue with a baby in Ghirardelli Square that I vividly remember. And then there was the Ariel statue in Disneyland before the area became pixie hollow. And as you and I had already discussed, there’s the replica of the Copenhagen Statue in Solvang, California.

Thanks so much for watching! Mermaid lore is indeed so fascinating; it's interesting how they can both be beautiful Disney princesses but also horrible creatures that could kill you 🤭

I had no idea there were so many! I only knew of the first 2 XDD (I'm a sad excuse for a Dane D: )
The full story of the second statue is, unfortunately, that she saved her soul by leaving her merman boyfriend. The tale is from so long ago that at the time, merfolk were considered demonic, similarly to elves and trolls. Agnete would have forfeit her immortal soul by staying. Similarly, in the same folk tradition, her children would have been equally soulless and considered more something the merman used to manipulate her to stay, so he could eat her soul or... something else like that.
It wasn't until the 1800 and the advent of romanticism that poets and such continued the story and the abandonment was viewed as that; abandonment.

Oh wow, thanks for that interesting back story! Yeah I definitely picked up on the religious undertone while researching the back story online, and there were many different variations of the tale! Still a creepy statue either way 😅
