Great activities, Didi! Thanks for sharing. May I ask if Mika has been toilet trained? And if you can share any tips? My daughter refuses to go and she is now 3. I don't mind her taking her time but she goes to daycare twice a week and she can't join the preschool program until she is toilet trained. Right now she is okay in her class but soon she will find the activities not challenging enough. Wonder if it is the same in the UK or anywhere else, no preschool program until toilet trained?
Hi Catherine, I don't have any advice apart from to follow your child. As much as Mika is independent from very early on (starting with the baby-led weaning and then being let doing most things by himself), we struggled a lot with his toilet training and we let it be until he is fine with it. We hope to be able to do it in the summer, but I will let him lead me, as the previous attempts were painful to go through. Party, I guess, it is our fault, as we left it for far too long because we travelled a lot and I preferred him to go wherever we are, whenever he wanted to instead of holding until we found places to go to. I wanted him to have very healthy relationship with 'going to the toilet' as i didn't have when i was little and it took me years to get to normal. And when we tried around Christmas (he was 3y3m) he didn't want to go at all, we tried again in February for whole three painful days. and it broke my heart as he was running around, holding it, in pain and simply refused no matter what (and he is very independent and he speaks also well, he understands everything, however, he has a block toward the toilet, that is it - and he told me, Mommy, I'm not ready, please let me be ready, i will be when I grow up a bit). I got advice from friends and people who have been through that and they said not to worry at all and to just let it be. So that is what I did. Now, he goes to my nursery school and there we never pressure anyone to potty train at any time. However, our teachers take the children each day to the toilet to change them and put them on the seat. As he goes too (although refuses to do anything, but at least sits now on the seat), I can see that now he gets interested and we started to sit at home (he wanted, we facilitate). He even wants to be without a nappy and in underwear while at home. I think he is ready and soon he will be out in no time, but I don't pressurise him at all. We got some books about Zoo in the Loo, how the animals poo, etc, but the best is the influence from his peers. Many children around him didn't have any issue to get potty trained. We did. I think, again, that I left it for far too long. I can't change it now, so I work with what I have. Here, at schools and nurseries, it varies. Some require it, others are flexible. Usually a Montessori setting should be flexible. I hope that this helps. Sorry I couldn't be of any help.

I don't think they sell those large colorful block beads here. Did you make the pattern card yourself or did those come with the beads? A lot of beads they sell aren't non toxic.
We make the pattern ourselves, but you can simply draw on a piece of paper squares with different colors and use as a pattern.

Where can we get cards which you used in Activity 1
Hi Anisha, just google images of objects (inanimate, things that aren't living) and people, animals, trees (animate) and put them in Word and print them, cut them. We make our own cards. Thank you so much for watching!

Hi Ja Ja. Do you mean if you animate/inanimate is part of the curriculum when studying towards Montessori qualification or whether Maria Montessori talked about that in particular?
In a Montessori environment (in a nursery) there will usually be an activity for animate/inanimate, within the KUW area (Knowledge and Understanding of the World). There are many activities that require categorisation and sustained shared thinking in KUW, to support the development of the child’s knowledge and understanding of the world. This includes consideration of the principle of Cosmic Education and how this is embedded in the daily life of children in a Montessori educational setting and what it means in the context of the lives of children, the Montessori setting and the wider community.
While Maria Montessori talked about the Cosmic Education, and Cosmic Plan: "There is a plan to which the whole universe is subject. All things, animate and inanimate, are subordinated to that plan. There are also patterns for all species of living and non-living things. These patterns fall in line with the universal plan", I am not sure that she particularly would name an activity in regards to that. Each school would create their own activity bank to support the child's understanding of the world.
