- This is a quick repair to fix tire bead/spot leaks in your tire without completely taking a part the tire. Also, we are using common household tools for this repair.
Update: This full size spare tire has been rotated for use over a month without any problems.
Thanks so much for this video. Both my front tires had slow leaks. Every week I'd need to top them off with air. I had to remove them both last night to replace the tie rod ends and thought now is the time to do this. Both leaks were caused by the installer leaving the barcode sticker on the tire! I checked both for leaks again afterwards and problem solved. Thanks for saving my sanity and $$$!
thanks you. in my case I have two very small strips of rubber that were pinned between bead and rim. I simply removed them and am now leak free!
+Adam Freiburger Good job.
Thank you for the video. The background music was a nice touch also.
Thanks for your feedback!
Went to Rhyda Tire here in RI. Took them less than 12 minutes to separate the tire, wire-wheel the rim to remove corrosion, clean the tire bead, remount and repressurize. 20 bucks. Done. There must be similar shops everywhere.
How much does it cost to repair a tire? On average, tire puncture repair will cost you between $10 and $20. The repair will involve getting the tire patched. Some tire dealers will repair a punctured tire for free if you purchased your tire from them. It is really a nice service to have at your disposal, and it makes you want to do business with them again.
Normally, people will take their car to tire shop for repair. The purpose of this video is to give ideas for someone who wants to do it by himself. Or, to buy himself a good lunch for the saving.
Excellent video! Also love the background music. Thank you!
Thanks for your feedback!
Thanks for vid sorted my slow leak too.
One point could get my nuts to stay in place with soapy water, so I used a couple of large G clamps, worked perfectly
this is not a permanent repair, alum. wheels oxidize and this caused the leak if you don't take it apart and clean it completely you will get the leak in another area and have to do it again. also using a pair of needle nose to take out the valve stem is not good. a lot of valve caps have the remover on the end or go buy to tool you will only damage the tread and have other problems the tool costs $2.00
This full size
spare tire has been rotated for use over a month without any problems. The brake
cleaner is the very good cleaning agent. If leakage still persist after this repair,
one should know to bring the tire for repair to a tire shop. Common sense is
essential for any repair, anyone still can damage or de-thread the valve stem
with the special tool.
its corrosion on alumium under bead dunno remove tire then sandpaper it then l used zink spray and others have too spray and dry to smooth finish might be doable by just breaking bead . or silicone putty sikaflex is used by jeep guys to seal bead but might bond and tear rubber from bead on disassembly later, also, does it have chlorine that damages engine sensors , so maybe not use in front. tried it on a scooter tire worked fine
no such thing as a 'permanent' repair buddy-tyres'll wear n hav ta be changed.so so 'wheels'..what tgmac is demonstrating-is 'science' you do sumthin and it ''works' -it works...simmmple
Thanks for posting. I've had 2 different professionals(?) look at this problem and still failed to fix. I'm now considering switching to steel wheels as a permanent fix as I am so fed up with these bloody alloys.
Can you tell what is the problem of your tire?
Great! Looks like it is a permanent fix. Thanks for your feedback!
Most shops are simply going to lightly run the grinder along the rim and just put more bead sealer on than the last time and hope that holds.
When you say professionals, they may be experts on tire instillation, brakes, struts, etc, but they are not rim reconditioning experts. That is something different. Find a shop that does rim reconditioning/repair. They will grind off corrosion, clean rims, then put on sealant, and let that fully dry/cure. Then you put the tires back on on with bead sealer.
My mechanic has removed, cleaned the inside of rim, bead and balanced the front tires three times. There is always some white dry oxidation occurring. Could be the flexing of the sidewalls of these low profile tires. None the less, I tried this four months ago but also spread some brake fluid on the bead to soften it and so far have no leaks. I did notice that after I pumped 50 psi of air to seat the bead against the rim, that after 20 mins. I released air to adjust to 36 psi and noticed bubbles at 38 lbs. I pumped it back up and the bubbles stopped as it got to 40 psi. The max air pressure on these tires are 44 psi. I have it at 42 lbs and so far after four months have not lost any air pressure. One more thing...some say too much air can blow the air out of your tire if you hit a pot hole, Well...don't hit the pot hole!! An under inflated tire from max psi will collapse more and cause a bent rim. My rims are $475.00 each. I would rather blow a tire. I did this in my driveway exactly as he did and saved $$$$$. Very rewarding. Thank you tgmac8288.
Very valuable info! Thanks for your feedback!
Thanks sir, that's exactly my problem I will try this method.
Good old oriental ingenuity👍
Learned from Old Good Canadian :)
Very good,I'm going to try it..good job
How was this working out with you? Did you try?
+William Swanfeld Waiting for your update!
If y'all really are having trouble finding a leak. Find a water tank, swimming pool or a trough big enough ( The bathtub works fine as long as the wife's at work) and drop the whole wheel in the water. Wait for the ripples to settle and slowly rotate tyre until you see air bubbles rising to the surface. Track it from there. Have a nice day!
Water+soap is a best way to find a leak. It disappoints nobody! Just watch carefully and will see the bubbles grow! Why carry the dirty tire to mess up inside ones house? If one is not careful to drop the tire in the bathtub, the tire is heavy enough to damage the bathtub and loosen its drainage pipe. Thanks for your comment!
Thanks mate,worked a treat.
By the way you could have used that brake cleaner as a air inflator just light it and it'll pop that tire right back in place without inflating it.
Good old saying, " Never play with Fire!" We are working on Mechanical but not chemical ! :)
I bought my new tires once in F&F tire center. I got a flat tire about twice. I thought they gave me a bad new tire so i bought another new one in walmart. I also had an air leak. Is my rim the problem?
jaxyhale If the rim was not cleaned properly before installation of a new tire, it would cause leak later. Walmart should have pretty good warranty for tire's workmanship. You should go to Walmart and ask them why leakage after new tire installation. Walmart should fix it for you free under warranty. Furthermore, all tire shop should have the responsibility to inspect the rim in order to make sure the rim is in good shape before installation. Otherwise, they would not install a new tire for the rim. For any reason if Walmart wants to charge you for that, you should bring it up to manager level except your tire got punched by a nail,
Good job- nice video--Thanks !
Thanx buddy! Good tip with the nuts.
Good Video. I got 2 tires I'm gonna try to fix
Did you try?
Yah, it worked. 1 tire worked the first time.
2nd tire still had a small leak, so I repeated and then it worked.
Great! Good job!
What if the rim leaks all the way round ?
The rim is likely poorly oxidized. The best is to bring it to a tire shop to check it out.
not what i do.but quick fix-without bead breaker -wire brushes buffs-sealants etc..so good for you.@handy tip
I tried the soap+water trick but there were no bubbles that I could find. My tire still loses air pressure about 40kpsa every week. What do?
Did you spray soap+water all over the tire to find any puncture?
tgmac8288 yeah I did. No bubbles showed up. I think it might be rust on the rim or something like a valve leaking...
If there is no bead leak(around the rim) or puncture, spray soap-water around the valve stem and its opening/hole. The loosen valve core inside the valve stem is very common for slow leakage. Tighten or replace the valve core if air bubble found from the hole/opening of the valve stem.
tgmac8288 That's a good tip. Thank you... I'm gonna try that.
Surprisingly it did. I wonder how it got loose in the first place. The leakage has slowed considerably but since there's been such a drop in outdoor temperature where I live, it's hard to gauge if it's stopped altogether.
Criminal mischief on part of the manufacturer. The labels are printed with heat. Heat sensitive labels contain copper salts, which destroy latex rubber, causing it to decompose. I had a tire with a heat label on the inside which was not removed, and the copper salts in the label ate a hole in the innertube(truck tire 80 - 90 psi). When purchasing new tires, I ask to inspect them before installation to check for labels. On tubeless tires, i will be using type 3 aviation gasket seal, a non hardening sealer in a can with brush aplicator like Hi - Tack gasket sealer. There is a rim sealer for tires, but I do not know how it lasts.
Very valuable info. Thank you!
thanks I just fixed my tire rear tire
Okay.. thank you
Thank you..
I have a tire that always has an air leak. I kept buying a new tire and i still had problems. Is my rim the problem? I need help.
jaxyhale Can you tell me when and where did you buy and install the problem tire?
tgmac8288 its been months since i havent fixed my car, I left it in my garage with a flat tire because i got tired in fixing it. it always gets flat. I need my car if i ever wanna go alone. ive been carpooling to work. since this winter i havent used it. I had to put air in my tire once a month, i got lazy and stopped doing it so ever since that i just gave up.
jaxyhale Don't give up! Just make a day. Inflate your tire and drive to Walmart. Tell Walmart the problem and you want a permanent fix. Walmart should be able to fix it right for you because they are expert in tires business and they have experience of fixing all different tires problems. Unless you want to leave your car sitting there forever.
+tgmac8288 walmart? expert in tire?
supra966 lmao
Needle nose pliers to remove a valve stem core? Dude, get yourself a valve core wrench. And a tooth brush for the soap/water? Get yourself an old pump spray bottle!
The heading clearly indicates to use "simple tools" but not special tools. You can use any tools as long as it works. If one has the needle nose pliers of which can perform the same task as the valve core wrench, one does not need to spend time and money to get the valve core wrench. Especially to those who don't fix tires often. Used tooth brush is a pretty versatile tool. It can also brush to clean, but the spray bottle wouldn't.
+tgmac8288 I used a kids orange juice bottle with the little pop top and worked perfectly to find the leak, I was actually looking for a leak in the tyre and the soapy water that ran down on the back of the bead foamed up on a little spot. Its a slow leak and now I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to let's the air out and have a look under the bead.
i have a chrysler 300m 2001 with alluminum rims
i hope thats not you in your picture... u look like a grown man who found hanna montannas wig... have a good day though ;)
After going to all the trouble to take tire off vehicle just remove tire from rim and fix the problem
:)
Tubeless develop this problem sometime in there lifespan.
+bazrazin1 Dam tubeless. I miss the tubes :(
i was fed up & so put a tube in my tubeless, no diff in performance & handling & am using the tyre till date.
Voids any warrantee if you put a tube in a tubeless tire
Maybe a $15.00 can of bead sealer would be a more permanent fix.
+Timothy Price Bead sealer might not be a more permanent fix if one will take a look to Ruele Nelson's feedback about his sister's tire leakage problem about a month ago which was caused by a dent along the inner-side of the rim. On the other hand, one wouldn't know what was the real cause of the air leak by just throwing in with bead sealer. Adam Freiburger found two very small strips of rubber that were pinned between bead and rim. Dale Thibodeau found both leaks were caused by the installer leaving the barcode stickers on the tires! Wouldn't you care to find these out? Nevertheless, it was faster for me to fix it in my garage within an hour instead of spending an hour back and forth from Walmart to get that bead sealer. For sure it is a good choice to use bead sealer if one can't find the problem.
+tgmac8288 Let's get this right... you do break down the tire off of the rim. You do clean all surfaces of corrosion and dirt. You do place up to 3 coats of sealer on all surfaces. No, it does not leave any part un-examined. Yes, this is a permanent fix.
That music has got to go. . .😠
Thanks for your feedback! There are limited music permitted by T-tube. It would be appreciative if you could recommend an better one. I am open to all good music.
tgmac8288 For what it worth I like the music, also thanks for the information it work for my tire.
torturous music
UA-cam does not allow all music for our video. There is limited music permitted by UA-cam. This is the best I could find. If you find any better from UA-cam. Please let me know. Though, I got some good compliment about this music. Thanks for your comment!
I liked it
Thank you for your comment!
ok???????????
Excuse me! I don't get what you meant. Please be more specify!
Tried, twice. Useless. Need to actually break the bead. Going to tire shop.
Sounds like your rim were to rusty.
All that to save $20
This video is about the technique of fixing slow leak and good for DIY. Also showed that the professional tire installer leaving the barcode sticker on
the tire! How do you like it after you paid good dollars for the tires if a barcode sticker was not removed?I always suggest those who brought tires from big company like Walmart and Canadian Tire etc. to bring the tires back and have them repair puncture or slow leak for free.
For those who repair their own vehicles, is that true "all that to save $20.00. "
My calculation is to have to a tire shop fix this leakage tire would take me at least 1-2 hours depended on how busy was the shop. Last time it took me 3 hours to fix a tire leak from Walmart. This video showed you that was fixed in less than an hour in my garage. I had one hour plus time gained with $20.00 for a good dinner.
Thanks for your comment!
Or to save your life. It's past the garage open hours here, and i need to put on my winter tires for when I go to work tomorrow. Unfortunately, i found that my rim is leaking. will definetely try this
tried it, couldnt fix my tire because the rim was rusted and thats what caused the leak..
Its about learning and teaching and also saving money if you can do it why not?silly comment.
and of course the tyre magically goes off the rim enough to stick 2 nuts in it so you can clean it,okey dokey then! rubbish
